UCHU Sushi Portland Reviews from The Last Year
Me and a friend had quite the Saturday seeing a matinee of
Me and a friend had quite the Saturday seeing a matinee of a play and then a late night rare movie. With a few hours to kill on the in between we figured we'd grab a nice sit down meal. She had been telling me about Uchu for a while so I was excited to try it. I feared it would disappoint - I get nervous when people really talk up a restaurant. This was far better than I expected. Going in on a Saturday to anything can be a bit sketch since places get overwhelmed but we got in early which was perfect. The restaurant was busy and full but their tables are spaced so you are not on top of each other or feel packed in. Service was great too - everything came out very fast. We were the ones taking our time. My friend is a vegan and so was our server which was great because she gave my friend solid recommendations she appreciated a ton. Also, she had so many options to chose from - their menu is pretty incredible for choices no matter what your food needs are. Everything I ordered was incredible - miso soup, shrimp shumai, salmon sashimi, a negihama roll and a dragon roll. Everything was so mindfully made and fresh.
Super Tasty Food with great service and cool atmosphere
I went to Uchu for lunch on a Monday. The restaurant is located in the Mississippi District of Portland (North). The food, service and atmosphere were all top notch. We enjoyed some sushi (nigiri) and the pieces were not only big but also very fresh and tasty. We also had a bento box (which is part of the lunch special and a good value) plus some jalapeno poppers as an appetizer. Our server Ray was super nice and very knowledgeable about the menu indicating which rolls and other items were most popular. Although, we did not order any specialty rolls, Uchu has a lot of them! Like a lot of restaurants in the Portland area, Uchu has plenty of vegan and vegetarian options. They also feature a full drink menu including lots of beers on tap. The atmosphere includes a very cool and colorful fish tank which adds to the ambiance. Pro Tips - did not need a reservation for lunch (and it was a weekday); however Uchu is not that big of a place and started to fill up by 1pmish. You can sit at the bar and get food if the tables are full. For dinner, especially on a weekend, might want to make a reservation. The Mississippi District is filled with lots of fun shops and restaurants. There is adequate street parking on Mississippi and if you need to, park on the side streets then walk up. As an FYI, the jalapeno poppers appetizer was larger than expected; 4 pieces and definitely shareable for 2 people. Uchu also makes a roll with the jalapeno popper. I would go to Uchu again for lunch or dinner and likely try the friend chicken!
Happy hour review (2-6PM Monday-Friday): Sushi: Tempura
Happy hour review (2-6PM Monday-Friday): Sushi: Tempura roll (7/10): decent roll if you like avocado and shrimp tempura Enoki roll (10/10): vegan sushi? Yes please! I love the crunch of enoki mushrooms - this was my favorite Dynamite roll (9/10): so tasty with a little spice. This is a fried roll (like tempura) We also had a nice Kirin beer with our sushi. Overall, great happy hour!
Great sushi
It can be a bit noisy but a great place to eat. The prices are very reasonable, particularly if you take advantage of their extended happy hour menu. I haven't tried their fried chicken but hope to do it next time.
So I've always enjoyed veggie/tempura veggie roll and am
So I've always enjoyed veggie/tempura veggie roll and am thrilled when it's an option on a sushi menu. Now that more and more restaurants are offering plant based options there's so much more to explore! That's exactly what I did when I placed a pick up order at Uchu Sushi & Fried Chicken. It was a special occasion for my husband and I, celebrating our anniversary and because of this very cold weather we didn't really want to go out to eat. Sushi is romantic and when I saw all of the vegetarian/vegan options on the menu I was sold. We ordered 5 rolls total and 2 appetizers and our total was 73$ which was less than expected. We had so much food we couldn't finish everything! We started with the veggie gyoza because who doesn't love gyoza!? I have to be honest the inside of the gyoza was absolutely delicious and bursting with flavor but I think they were fried. I enjoy a boiled gyoza lightly pan fried in a mild oil and these ones seemed like they may have been quickly deep fried in salty oil. They were still really good! I'm just not a fried food fan. Next we had the vegan jalapeño poppers - this is one of my favorite things to eat and it's rare that I find them vegan friendly at restaurants! Another vegan dream come true. Now for our rolls - The vegan Monkey roll was simple but a little of the box for me. Made with asparagus, tofu and mango inside, the flavor and texture was mild. The mango brought a little sweetness to the roll that was interesting. 8/10 would order again. The Green Dragon roll sounded right up my alley made with tempura fried asparagus and topped with avocado and unagi sauce - however this was a 6/10 for me because the tempura fried asparagus was so greasy when I chewed and too salty for me with the added unagi sauce. The flavors were great! Just that fried part was really fried and I couldn't enjoy it completely. It's actually the only roll we didn't finish. The Jungle Roll was incredible - mango, avocado and yamagobo (burdock root - which looks like a carrot and has a similar taste/texture), topped with tomato. 10/10 really great flavor and the texture was spot on! Veggie Tempura roll - of course we had to get a classic veggie tempura roll. Filled with sweet potato, carrot and cucumber this was a safer option but delicious nonetheless. And now for my absolute favorite roll that was so brilliant I wish I ordered 2 - the Vegan Chiang Mai roll! A veggie tempura roll with a twist - topped with avocado, mango and a special house curry sauce. This was bursting with flavor! Everything worked so perfectly in this roll and I would encourage anyone to give it a try! We did not have room for dessert but I did see sesame balls on the menu and they are vegan. Maybe next time! When we arrived to pick up our order it was ready for us. The restaurant is very nice and cute inside and perfect for a date night out. I can't wait to go eat in and try new rolls! I would highly recommend Uchu to my veg friends and family. Thank you for having options for everyone.
Uchu is pretty good.
If I had to give a food recommendation, I highly recommend the yellowtail nigiri and the unagi roll. The chicken Karaage and their calamari are nothing to write home about (unfortunately), but their miso soup is tasty. In my opinion, I think the food is way too pricey for the experience; it's kind of loud like a dance club because music is blasting in there and I wish the service was quicker. Don't get me wrong, the service was nice and friendly (both visits) but just a little slow (both visits). It was so slow that I found myself asking another server to find my server (both visits). The restaurant gets half a star added to my overall rating because they serve Coca-Cola products.
The food was delicious, atmosphere very pleasing and good
The food was delicious, atmosphere very pleasing and good service. However I left feeling quite deceived which leads me to write my first yelp review. The server charged my card at the table and presented the tablet saying "All you have to do is sign". I gathered my reading glasses to see that she had set the tip to 22%. I believe it is my choice to set the tip (I always tip 20%). She clearly was hoping I would just sign and not notice what she had done. This is really upsetting to me and tainted my lovely experience of the establishment.
Sushi and Fried Chicken? Why not.
I've not had the chicken, but the sushi is decent. Great open location with garage doors that open to the outside air in summer. Giant fish tank of tropical fish, which presumably are not made into sushi. Some outside seating to boot. It's a small, intimate space. Casual. Not like a typical sushi place. Not the finest sushi I've ever had, but it's decent and reasonably priced. You'll dig it.
1 word.
Horrible Do not order from here. You will regret it. Nothing was good. Even the little salad was bad.
We dined outside and it was an amazing experience.
Their service was spot on and the surrounding in general has a peppy vibe to it. We loved the jalapeño poppers and sushi a lot and enjoyed the drinks with the amazing weather.
