🤢 2/5 - Spago prices for food court service

FOOD 4/5
- very good but not great. Steak $108 without sides, $20 for fries (albeit generous portions), salad and dessert were top class.
- 2 courses and a mid level bottle of wine will be $600 … this is the price point where you have serious competitors like Spago, Cut and Cure.
- Personally I think the food is comparable but 20-30% cheaper at Dempsey Cookhouse, Bistro Du Vin and even PS Cafe Palais - but… this place has real appeal
SERVICE 1/5
- first impressions: staff have no charisma. Either they are miserable or just trying to be discreet. I don’t know which but if I was the owner I’d address this
- lasting impression: guests are a nuisance and made to feel Unwelcome. This is the bottom line.
- My experience… 30mins before the end of the seating, 2 servers took it in turns every 5mins to be out by 8pm which of course would adhere to. At 8:01 the message was a firm “get out now” … I explained firmly that I’ve paid the bill, the table is clear and I’m simply finishing a last sip of water while my wife was in the bathroom.
- lack of commercial awareness: above is not the way to get repeat business. The next guest waiting could have been parked at the bar momentarily for a drink. There was another spare 2 seat table but they specifically wanted mine immediately (to be fair the corner booth is awesome).
I knew 2 other tables there - one a wealthy couple on date night, another a broker with a customer. A banker friend of mine did work lunches here a lot. My point is - this is a lucrative crowd, don’t turn them off with bad service.
Anyway, I asked to be at the bar for a post dinner drink though it was booked (?) but could have a drink outside. I went outside and nobody bothered to serve me there either - so we complained to a manager and left.
By the way the response is “if you don’t like it, it’s your choice not to come again”. Wow
AMBIENCE 5/5
- brilliant. Laneway NY style neighbourhood luxury restaurant. Has real appeal
- fit out is great and no detail spared on high end plates, glassware
- music was old school style, a bit like a transistor radio. Suits the style of the place (personally I like a bit of bass but hey non worries - it all works together exceptionally well)
VALUE & OTHER 3/5
- it is expensive vs competitors but I get the appeal
- wine list and beer selection could have been a bit broader, but no majors
Luke’s is 10yrs old and clearly a popular place that is not easy to get into. Maybe my experience was a one off / maybe there’s no incentive to improve the service if your consistently booked out.
If I was an owner or investor I’d address the service quickly - many other reviews cite this as the weak link, not the food or the venue. Training in US style service and some feedback incentives would probably do it. I wouldn’t want the team punished, after all nobody comes to work to do a bad job.
I’m not the kind of person to complain about restaurants - I want good places to do well, especially after the horrendous last 2yrs for F&B.
I wont dare ask for anything to be comped etc. but I hope this review is constructive. If Lukes management is reading this you probably know who I am and how to reach me.
