From very good to average
Luke's has been a long time favourite. a standard almost never changing menu of stand-out food and brilliant service. Especially noticeable in Singapore, where exceptional service is not common. Its no longer a purveyor of great service. Staff changes are less serving staff have contributed to this. the market has made it difficult for restaurants to hire decent serving staff, so I hope Luke's can weather this.
Be the first to ReplyGood Old School Restaurant with a nice touch of US east coast
We had a last dinner with our son an his girlfriend before go back to Europe yesterday. It was a perfect visit from the reservation until the end. Perfect service, fantastic fresh oysters from US, very delicious dishes and last but not least a wonderful stylished interior. We’ll be very exciting to come here again.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent value for delicious lunch
We were disappointed when Luke's at the Heeren was closed. We had a delicious, but not cheap, lunch at Luke's on Gemmill Lane. The restaurant was well decorated with wood paneling and two bathrooms with after-dinner mints in jars. Luke's provided a tasty corn bread starter that was still warm. We had clam chowder, lobster mac and cheese, and grilled turbot. The green salad was chopped kale with peanut and sesame oil (great taste that was new to us) with nice fat tomato slices. Everything tasted excellent, but we felt the mac n cheese and the clam chowder were more liquid than we were used to. Service was helpful and friendly. We recommend Luke's as an excellent value for a delicious lunch.
Be the first to ReplyBrilliant food let down by terrible service
Such a love hate evening. The food is incredible, there was nothing that we didn't like. The steak was cooked perfectly, the sides and dessert were delicious. It is fine to pay a lot of money for great good if the service matches, but when you're paying these prices and then the service is terrible, it makes you resent paying the rates they charge here. Firstly when we arrived nobody showed us to our table. Nobody came to check if our food was okay, or if we needed anything else. We were then served our bill (without asking for it) and told 'here is the bill, the restaurant is closing'. It was 10.30pm and although that may have been the curfew for alcohol at the time, we were not told that was when the restaurant shut and we clearly still had food in front of us. When we complained about the attitude it fell on deaf ears, and I don't think the staff here give a damn whether you have a good time or not as they clearly don't care about repeat business. Sadly I won't be returning, as despite excellent food, it is not quite enough to justify experiencing the lousy service.
Be the first to ReplyNo wonder it’s half empty on a Sunday!
First of all, I’m revealing a true review, not paid review. I won’t give 5 stars review like the others local guides. This restaurant has a STRICT and WEIRD policy where the guest can only bring 2 bottles wine over and the corkage is crazy ($100/bottle). We purposely went to Oak’s purchased $3000 worth of wines. I explained that we’re tourist and going to leave by tmr and we don’t mind to pay whatever corkage. Very firmly, the female manager rejected our request. We had to leave, the manager just said: MIND YOUR STEPS. Very “polite”! We chose to leave and enjoyed a 5 stars service at the Italian restaurant next door. One more suggestion, hire a more friendly managers/staffs will helps revive the business. Business on Sunday seems not doing well, at least 6-7 tables are empty.

First time here and very quiet on a sunday afternoon For starters, we had tuna tartare, kale salad, oysters, chop salad. The tartare portion was large, then again, it was expensive like everything else. Kale salad exceeded expectations with the peanut sesame dressing For mains, we had the steak and fries, and lobster roll. Nice steak, a lot of fries Good service Very pricey for non michelin and non celebrity chef place 7/10

FOOD 4/5
- very good but not great. Steak $108 without sides, $20 for fries (albeit generous portions), salad and dessert were top class.
- 2 courses and a mid level bottle of wine will be $600 … this is the price point where you have serious competitors like Spago, Cut and Cure.
- Personally I think the food is comparable but 20-30% cheaper at Dempsey Cookhouse, Bistro Du Vin and even PS Cafe Palais - but… this place has real appeal
SERVICE 1/5
- first impressions: staff have no charisma. Either they are miserable or just trying to be discreet. I don’t know which but if I was the owner I’d address this
- lasting impression: guests are a nuisance and made to feel Unwelcome. This is the bottom line.
- My experience… 30mins before the end of the seating, 2 servers took it in turns every 5mins to be out by 8pm which of course would adhere to. At 8:01 the message was a firm “get out now” … I explained firmly that I’ve paid the bill, the table is clear and I’m simply finishing a last sip of water while my wife was in the bathroom.
- lack of commercial awareness: above is not the way to get repeat business. The next guest waiting could have been parked at the bar momentarily for a drink. There was another spare 2 seat table but they specifically wanted mine immediately (to be fair the corner booth is awesome).
I knew 2 other tables there - one a wealthy couple on date night, another a broker with a customer. A banker friend of mine did work lunches here a lot. My point is - this is a lucrative crowd, don’t turn them off with bad service.
Anyway, I asked to be at the bar for a post dinner drink though it was booked (?) but could have a drink outside. I went outside and nobody bothered to serve me there either - so we complained to a manager and left.
By the way the response is “if you don’t like it, it’s your choice not to come again”. Wow
AMBIENCE 5/5
- brilliant. Laneway NY style neighbourhood luxury restaurant. Has real appeal
- fit out is great and no detail spared on high end plates, glassware
- music was old school style, a bit like a transistor radio. Suits the style of the place (personally I like a bit of bass but hey non worries - it all works together exceptionally well)
VALUE & OTHER 3/5
- it is expensive vs competitors but I get the appeal
- wine list and beer selection could have been a bit broader, but no majors
Luke’s is 10yrs old and clearly a popular place that is not easy to get into. Maybe my experience was a one off / maybe there’s no incentive to improve the service if your consistently booked out.
If I was an owner or investor I’d address the service quickly - many other reviews cite this as the weak link, not the food or the venue. Training in US style service and some feedback incentives would probably do it. I wouldn’t want the team punished, after all nobody comes to work to do a bad job.
I’m not the kind of person to complain about restaurants - I want good places to do well, especially after the horrendous last 2yrs for F&B.
I wont dare ask for anything to be comped etc. but I hope this review is constructive. If Lukes management is reading this you probably know who I am and how to reach me.
Very nice food
Worth ordering these:
1. Milk-fed Dutch veal chop was excellent - tender meat with the right amount of fats in a perfect balance.
2. Lobster Mac & Cheese was enhanced with the Ritz cracker crumbs.
3. The jumbo lump crab cakes were delicious with bountiful crab meat.
4. The complimentary corn bread was fresh and not artificially sweetened. Dessert of key lime pie was interesting- it came in a cup form and the cookie crumbs and meringue balanced well with the sourness of lime.
5. Equally delicious: kale salad and French fries.
The lobster roll and signature foley ‘George Bank Scallops’ were alright, nothing to shout about. Recommend to skip them and go for the other great dishes described above.
Do note that the prices are not low.
Unbelievably Bad Service & Food Preparation
I have been going to Luke's for years. Its actually one of my favorite restaurants and it certainly isn't cheap..
Personally my favorite location was the (now closed) venue in The Heeren-- classy and sophisticated with excellent service.
Two of us went to celebrate my birthday.
Everything was fine except when the steaks came out (tenderloin and ribeye) both were overcooked. These were ordered medium rare and were cooked more to medium and in parts well done...
When this was brought to the attention of the waitress, the immediate knee-jerk without even checking the food was dismissive. Bad start sweetheart.
Improvisation is clearly a tactic: "How about towards the middle? Is that at least more rare?" Couldn't believe she actually said that? Wow. Tenderloin: FAIL.
The ribeye had the same issue, too overcooked and unevenly seared towards the center. FAIL.
Reluctantly the food was taken back (the arrogance displayed by the staff was shocking).
Food comes out again after a long wait. This time it is UNDER cooked.
By this stage I am aghast. As if the tenderloin wasn't bad enough, the ribeye came out resembling a large piece of jelly.
Honestly? Its hard to tell whether this was done in spite, or perhaps an inside joke known only to the chef (who was nowhere to be seen by the way) and staff.
It really was quite exhausting trying to explain politely to stubborn and rude staff why these were rejected, so at this stage had no interest in pursuing. Akin to educating children who haven't taken their meds to be fair.
Ordered the burger and the tartare (again). Keep it simple right?
I am not embarrassed to state that I insisted on 2 glasses of red while we waited (the bottle we ordered was finished because of the added 30 minute wait this all took). For those of you familiar with the TV show Seinfeld, this was almost on the same level as dealing with George Costanza as a tight fisted, cheap manager in denial.
We finished the burger which was not up to usual high standards and the second plate of tartare (should actually be called "The Deceptive Avocado Chunks w/ Tuna Tartare" washed down our drinks and split.
I sincerely hope this was a one off, but either way, I'll happily get my burger fixes in the meantime from Ronald McDonald. At least his staff don't treat his patrons like dirt and you know what you are going to get.
EXTREMELY TERRIBLE LOUSY SERVICE
We came Luke’s restaurant today for celebrate my friend’s birthday. We were lightly late cause we cant find the way to come up to restaurant. We tried to contact those staffs for couple time but the instructions wasn’t clear.
Since we reached the restaurant - havent ordered yt - the staff there keep telling us multiple times that we have to leave at one hour sharp later and always show us too much attitude during taking our order.
We just feel so disappointed with such services but honestly, the food there is just way too good so we did calm down in awhile until those staff came and told us that we only left 5mins to finished our meal. Thats such extremely rude and we were in shock. No kidding . Especially when we wanted to order the dessert (birthday cake) for my our friend , the Filipino waitress just told us that we only can order the dessert after move to the bar and keep continuing said our table is time up. After that she just cleaned our table and move our food to the bar without informing us . So we all pissed off . We told her no need to move cause we finished the food and ready to go now. But she likes doesn’t understand and still ask if we want to order dessert now . Really speechless.
Got another waitress who is a bit chubby, also damn rude . She was the one who taken our order . She is keeping show us rude and lousy attitude. When we wanted to leave already, but she still ask if we want to take away our tenderloin which we almost finished , only left the bone and a bit of meat. Come on man, you’re working inside the fine dining restaurant not in the hawker centre. I mean like she should know how to control her voice when she take guest order. The way she speaks like shout at us one. We don’t deserve that such a lousy service when we just wanted to have dinner with our beloved . But really, those staffs there know how to spoil people mood .
We have spent nearly $700 for the total bill and it was even worse than experience in a normal food court. This restaurant is so call a fine dining place and we did not spent that amount of money to get this kind of service standard. It was extremely ridiculous experience and we would never come again. There are so many restaurants with good food and outstanding service which you feel happy to spend money on. DON’T COME HERE to feel being treated like nothing !!!!
Good food but very expensive
The restaurant is smaller than I expected; it’s hard to get away from its location in a shopping centre I suppose.
The waiting staff were pleasant and efficient but nothing in particular stood out. My friends and I all chose the ribeye done medium rare which turned out a wise choice as it was excellent. Sides were small but sufficient with one each. Lobster mac n cheese whilst having a good flavour disappointed a little as the sauce was quite watery instead of a more traditional sticky consistency and as seems common these days the “mac” was actually pasta shells which added to the overall wimpish impression the dish gave.
Wine is particularly expensive. We had a bottle of Pinot Noir rated 3.7 on Vivino which tasted about that but came at a whopping $160++. All the wines are well into three figures.
Celebrating buddy's birthday
Back to Lukes but for dinner this time. The restaurant is busy and crowded and we only have 2 hours for our table. We ordered 2 steaks of 400g each. One season with salt and pepper. The other in sake and pineapple juice. Both cooked medium plus. It turned out perfect for the 4 of to share. Added the kale salad, spinach, asparagus and a hamburger to share. And we tried half dozen oysters at the start. The service was excellent. Desserts was not on our plans but the restaurant gave the birthday girl a cake with candles and plated it do nicely with "happy birthday" piped in chocolate on the plate.
We want to come back again with friend soon.
Great place for a celebration
Wonderful staff, ambience and food.
Place for a treat - but absolutely value for money
Highly recommend it. You need to book ahead. I will go back for sure and can’t wait!
Average hmm meh
The wait is too long.. though its not bad, we wldn't revisit. Hype is 0_0
Lukes lobster burgers in tokyo tastes better!! - don't bother trying crab/shrimp options at luke's though.
"American" in Singapore.
It is very good business setup. One may only guess how happy owners of this profitable biz could be, but if you are a customer, not investor, be ready to contribute significantly to their ROI.
If you are regular in CULINA and want to experience sort of similarity with think “American accent” (of setup) multiplied by price double (of Culina) for menu discounted at least twice, that place is good to visit. However, if you are not prepared to eat 90$ USDA prime covered by thick crust of paper, salt (and something else) you better ask for almost 100$ dover sole. For someone could be a challenge to spoil 300g of USDA prime, but not for this restaurant. And if your entertainment budget is limited, be aware that there is no wine below 100$.
Tasteless Pork chop for 80$ will make you cry, especially if yesterday you ate very, very good “katsu” (black Japanese pork) in mid level place (MaMaison) for price less than half.
Perhaps secret of this place is in the name.
Its Oysters bar and they (oysters) are very good. Directly imported from Canada/US, oysters menu makes this place sort of unique. Needless to say that you have to pay double of CULINA price for same grade/quality product (of different origin though).
At the end of the dinner, looking for 500-1000$ bill (for 2) you may ask yourself what you paying for?
For “extraterrestrial” service? (although was ok) or terrific food? or for curiosity which left your mind in sort of default stage…
What perfection might look like
Luke's is just one of those places that have paid attention to all the little details that add up to create an amazing dining experience. The service is top-notch. The food is beautiful, delicious, somehow even manages to match the overall identity of the place. The wine selection is not extensive but covers every possibility with well-chosen options. Clearly, there has been some thought, care, energy put into every detail, and that is what separates the great dining experiences from the amazing ones ... and Luke's is amazing!
