Griffin's Bar & Restaurant Castlemaine Reviews from The Last Year
The nastiest owner I have ever encountered in Ireland. Give this bar a wide berth.
I have been coming to Clifden since the 1980s. One of my favourite bars used to be Griffen's. I have many precious memories of experiences in this cosy bar with its wonderful live music. It was my late mother's favourite venue in Clifden and we were here for her last ever night out in 2018 (she died the following year). Alas, all of this has now been destroyed by the ignorant behaviour of the buffoon of an owner last night. We had come from Lowry's, and had just stepped into Griffons and ordered three drinks from the barman for myself, my wife and my daughter. The bully of an owner came out from behind a bar, walked up to me and said "You can't stand around here without ordering a drink. If you don't order, you need to leave." I was flummoxed by these antics, I showed him the fifty Euro in my hand and answered "What do you mean? I've already ordered drinks." With an ugly scowl on his face, instead of apologizing, he turned away and began to collect the empties from another table and he disappeared into the back. His sidekick, the barman saw what happened yet didn't intervene. I told him I felt very unwelcome and expected an apology. But none was forthcoming. We drank our drinks and then left, despite the wonderful live music (The Brennan Sisters). We headed over to Malarkeys where the craic was awesome and the staff friendly. It was the first night of our two weeks in Clifden. Tonight we'll be starting in Magrath's (watching the Switzerland-Germany football game - we are Swiss) and ending in Lowry's but I can guarantee that neither I nor anyone in my family (there are five of us here) will ever waste a minute in Griffons ever again. At least not when that owner is still alive. He is not fit to be in charge of a hospitality institution. I am absolutely disgusted and I intend to report his aggressive behaviour to Clifden town council when it opens tomorrow.
Singer was incredible! And on a Monday night!
Singer was totally brilliant! Even if he didn’t know a request he could just sing it brilliantly! AMAZING! So pleased we just happened upon this lovely traditional pub with lively people and fab music!!
Top Establishment
Another great weekend in Clifden and especially at Griffins bar. In for food, drinks and even a bit of sport. Dave and sll the staff excellent, very friendly and good crack. Come to Griffins every year im in Clifden and would highly recommend. The food is particularly good and great value.
Ignorant and abusive experience at Griffins . Clifden
Were recommended to come here to watch Ireland V Scotland six nations rugby . Have never encountered such an ignorant , abusive and rude manager/owner of a premises . Will never return or recommend this pub . Stay away . Ended up at Kings instead and had a great afternoon .
Genuine lively Irish pub experience.
Griffin’s Bar offers a genuine lively Irish pub experience. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, and Dave and his staff are friendly and welcoming. Traditional Irish food, generous portions bursting with flavour. I had their special of the day. Bacon and cabbage. Delicious. With multi screens makes it a great place to watch sport. And they sometimes have live music. The pub can get lively, Just be prepared for a bit of good humored Irish banter – it’s all part of the fun!!
Can't believe people like this exist
The Owner (well i think was the owner) was really rude. Tried to sit by the fire and made it so that we couldn't sit by the fire by changing reserved signs around. But when locals came in, I made sure he moved reserved signs. I am from Galway city and I feel like we treat people with respect as I have never experienced this in Galway pubs ever
Hang with the locals
Griffins is the epitome of what you‘d expect from an Irish pub. David, the owner, runs a tight ship, ensuring a welcoming atmosphere. A high percentage of locals among the patrons lend credibility to this institution of Clifden‘s nightlife. John, master of all taps and the soul of the place, is a true gentleman with a great sense of humor. If you’re under thirty and up for a tough night, this place may not be your favorite. But if you want to hang with the locals, enjoy a brew and - more often than not, keep an eye on the blackboard outside for announcements - listen to live music, you‘ll definitely be happy you came.
Griffin's Bar and Restaurant in Castlemaine, Kerry is a
Griffin's Bar and Restaurant in Castlemaine, Kerry is a delightful fusion of sports bar energy and old-fashioned Airbnb charm. The decor is a playful mix of sports bar and cozy vibes. The chicken curry offers a unique dance of savory flavors, more subdued than your typical Bollywood explosion. The chicken vol au vent with mushrooms is a pastry masterpiece, bathed in a symphony of delicious white gravy. This place is all about hush-hush relaxation, with servers who are local legends sharing Southern Ireland secrets. If you're looking for a laid-back feast and a taste adventure, Griffin's is the spot to savor. Happy eating Yelpers!
Well worth calling in.
Griffins is a lovely welcoming little bar in the centre of Clifden. Although it very much appeals to sports fans (especially rugby) it still has a cosy, homely feel to it. The food (cabbage and bacon, and seafood chowder) were excellent and the stout was in great order. I wasn't there for the music sessions but by all accounts they are not to be missed. Thanks to John and staff for everything, hope to return soon.
A visit to we will remember
Clifden holds a very special place in both mine and my husbands heart, as it did with his parents, we first visited Griffins bar as a 6 in 2019 with my in-laws, from Liverpool, we had a good drink and a laugh, we returned in Nov 2022 but this time to spread the ashes of my mother in law, on a beautiful little beach we stumbled across when visiting with her in 2019, was a very bittersweet trip. We got talking to the owner who was friendly, to the point but with good banter, told us a bit about himself and the history of Clifden, great service. When he heard of the reason for our visit, he actually offered to drive us to the small beach if we needed it the following day, a very kind offer indeed. Great bar, great service, great town.
Thank you thank you

Best Pub experience in Ireland!
Great pub! Visited two nights in a row for wonderful music and friendly conversation. Griffins is clearly respected amongst Irish musicians and many of the greats stop by to play. Also had lunch. Food was some of the best we had while traveling the Wild Atlantic Way. Entire staff was welcoming and helpful and really enjoyed meeting other customers from all over the globe! Read reviews about not welcoming children…it’s a pub, maybe leave your little darlings at home in bed at 10:00pm!
Great Griffin’s
We have visited Griffin’s before when in Clifden and once again enjoyed a good pint of Guinness. Whilst we didn’t eat, we definitely would, two separate tables of locals commented to the staff how good the bacon and cabbage was and how the chowder was the best in Clifden - high praise indeed. Friendly welcome, high praise for the food and a good pint of Guinness - that’s what a good Irish pub is all about.
