We went with quite a few expectations. The food can be as they describe, signature, gourmet, etc. but it is not delicious. You cannot enjoy something delicious, many people say that you have to go to this restaurant with an open mind but that does not mean not eating delicious food, occasionally going to the trendy restaurant does not guarantee you an otherworldly experience. Food, no matter how avant-garde or innovative, should be enjoyed. The menu we got (April 2024) is short and not very varied, the only thing that was redeemable was the morrillo. Several of the dishes for which they were previously known and that we wanted to try (rib eye, etc.) are no longer on their menu (I understand that they rotate it from time to time). Overall an average experience, some dishes tasted bad. We have definitely eaten better in other places and also in restaurants of a similar “category”, perhaps we were not lucky with the menu we got this season, but hey, if you decide to give it the opportunity, keep in mind that it could be your best experience or a disappointment. It didn't seem expensive to us.

Wonderful colombian food experience. Beautiful informal ambiance and everything was great from cocktails to starters to main dish . Robalo was great but wellington of tuna was simply excelent. Valet parking also makes your life much easier in this area of Bogota
Be the first to ReplyGood food, horrendous rushed feeling
This restaurant came very highly rated, and the food was good, but the entire time I felt pressured to eat and leave as soon as possible. The approach within the restaurant was abominable. I don't blame the servers: this must be coming directly from the restaurant manager. It was so intense it bordered on insulting. It felt as though a waiter was waiting to pounce and rip the glass out of my hand as soon as it left my lips.

Very nice ambience with very attentive service, the idea is to share the dishes, portions often have 3 pieces, beautifully presented and excellent taste. Top: oysters, beetroot salad, tuna wellington
Be the first to ReplyColombian ingredients taken to their maximum expression
Probably one of the best restaurants I have been to in my life. The chef uses Colombian ingredients and recipes and takes them to their maximum expression, with recipes equivalent to those of the best restaurants in the world. The smoked morrillo is excellent and their ice cream is ten, but so are the rest of the dishes. To repeat many times. Excellent quality/price ratio and service of ten.

It was an excellent experience, everything was very well coordinated and organized. The attention of the entire team was extraordinary, excellent service timing and everyone was very kind. We chose the tasting menu experience, and we didn't regret it. Presentation, mix of flavors, very well defined textures in all dishes. Honestly, an experience to repeat. Thank you to the entire team for your attention and professionalism!!!

The new menu has dishes with bad taste, the quantity is small and the menu is limited. The dishes are sold out and there are no alternatives. The dishes: 1) papada are very thin slices with lettuce, 2) the empanadas are too small, 5 units, the sauce is spicy but has a good flavor. 3) the skewers are only 3 units and the taste is average, nothing special. 4) the crab comes shredded, it comes with kiwi and peas, the flavor is strong, I didn't like it 6) a dessert with ice and a green powder is salty, I didn't like it either, finally 5) the morrillo has a good flavor, it comes with banana , eggplant and tomato, the only redeemable dish, although the quantity is still very small.

An exceptional gastronomic experience in Bogotá! El Chato captivates from the first moment with its cozy and elegant atmosphere. Chef Álvaro Clavijo personally serves you, sharing his passion for Colombian cuisine and explaining the use of only local ingredients in each dish. Its inspiration comes from the richness of the Colombian land and culture, creating a unique and authentic culinary experience. In addition, the incredible collection of fermented foods that he incorporates into the pairing of his new menu adds an extra dimension of flavor and complexity. The new kitchen is a spectacle in which you can see all the action of fine dining, from preparation to service. It is no surprise that El Chato is the 2nd best restaurant in Latin America, a well-deserved distinction for this temple of Colombian gastronomy!

Absolutely outstanding culinary experience. Have been here 2 times within 2 nights. First night took the degustation menu with Wine pairing, second night expected to order a-la-carte, but the chef created another special tasting for me! Also, the sommelier knows his job - thanks for an interesting selection of top wines. Not to forget the charming ladies, who are serving your food! All in all an absolute 5-star experience, worth the money. Don’t understand, why this unique restaurant doesn’t have 5 points on Trioadvisor …

Mainly food was very innovative and well prepared. The only thing with the food was that in many portions there were 3 pieces - and same time we were recommended to share plates. That is bit funny when most of the companies consisted of 2 or 4 persons. What irritated me was the use of Italian bottled water when Colombia has excellent waters of they own.

As our last meal in colombia I was excited for our reservation at this top rated restaurant. However service was very disorganized and food was ok. Since we were a big group we ordered everything on the menu a la carte. We were not told that they were out of one of the menu items until I noticed it was missing at the end of our meal. This is very concerning as they only had 12 items and could have easily mentioned it at any point. Either they did not notice or were hoping we wouldn't notice, in both cases quite unprofessional. In addition one of us ordered a simple cafe con leche (coffee with milk) which took us 3 requests to finally receive. Our water glasses were also left empty throughout most of our meal. I understand it can get busy so we requested to leave a bottle of water at the table and yet they did not. We had people at our table who spoke Spanish so language was not an issue. Our waiter was nice but overall very inexperienced. The food itself was mediocre. There were only 3 out of the 12 that I found to be actually tasty. The overall meal was not bad, but lacking in the unique flavors you typically expect in fine dining.
Be the first to ReplyHow is this one of the best restaurants in the world?
Really disappointing experience at El Chato. From the table, the service and to their attitude towards food allergy. Despite booking in April for dinner in February we were given a really bad table in a restaurant that wasn't even full! People who came in after (same size group) were given much better. At times there were 5 members of staff standing in a small space behind my husband's seat, drying glasses - it felt like they were on top of us! Service was terrible. There was one good member of staff - the rest were sub-standard. Nobody offered us the menu for dessert and had to ask. We then waited 20 minutes to order a dessert which was pretty bad. We counted 10 staff and still nobody came in what was a half full space. The food itself was OK, some good some not so. I explained I was allergic to peanuts and was assured that there would be none in my food by our waiter. When our food came I asked another member of staff what a nutty smelling sauce was and he said it was made from a type of peanut (my Spanish is good enough to know exactly what he was saying) so I was immediately put of the food and sent it back. Our waiter who spoke English said it was something that looked like peanut (I can comprehend the difference and that is definitely not what the person I questioned said). It reduced my trust in the whole restaurant. No apology. El Chato has two different dining offerings and we had booked a la carte. Back in August I contacted the restaurant to swap to the tasting menu but my request was ignored. That is fair enough if the restaurant was booked up for that option. However, you would expect a better experience when eating a la carte. This is one of the 50 best restaurants in the world and is by far the worst experience of all of the restaurants we have eaten at from the current list and others which had appeared on it before (and and it was by far the worst of all the best dining spots we ate at in the country (we ate at LEO, Celele, Humo Negro and Mesa Franca during the 2 1/2 weeks we were in Colombia). It was a really disappointing last night meal of our holiday. Avoid unless you are happy with poor service and underwhelming food.
Be the first to ReplyGood Food, Bad Service
Made a reservation to celebrate a nice occasion and was quite disappointed that right from the beginning of the experience we did not receive good service. The waitress had way too many tables to attend to, felt rushed and we waited way too long for our first drinks. It was my second time here and even though the food was still quite good it wasn't outstanding, I will not be coming back nor will be recommending.

We took a late recommendation on this on a Monday. We managed to get a table luckily and the place was busy, full of atmosphere. Food is sensational, service first class and overall experience incredible. There are not many places I have experienced such great food. Decor and ambiance is something special. I recommend you book ahead , overall we were so amazed . The price is good for such a great experience .
Be the first to ReplyFantastic food with fabulous service
Fantastic food. Absolutely delicious and served with flair. We would come again tomorrow if we could! The beef main course was a knockout of a dish. Our server Valentina was so attentive and sweet - 10/10 service and 10/10 food
Be the first to ReplyColombian food with a sophisticated twist
The food in this restaurant is the protagonist. You can taste the freshness of all the ingredients in various traditional Colombian plates with sophisticated variations. We shared different appetizers and entrees, which made the experience even more enjoyable as every plate was exceptional. The originality, richness and complexity of the plates made it a memorable experience. The ambience is also very nice. In our case the service was very good too. We were not in a hurry as the whole point was to enjoy this gastronomic experience.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent food, but service is less than average
Food is outstanding, service is not the best. The # of tables per waiter is above average. Our waiter was taking care of all of the tables on the right hand side of the restaurant (about 5-6) , si he was extremely rushed, stressed and not able to provide the service one would expect from this type of restaurant . They have to make significant improvements to their operation.
Be the first to ReplyUpscale creative cooking, some dishes with very complex taste.
Upscale restaurant, creative tasting menu, and creative alcohol pairing, reasonably priced. Some of the dishes have particular complex taste that is hard to pair with wine. Also, tended to be on the acidic side of the taste gamma. Friendly and accommodating staff.

El Chato is definitely one of the top five restaurants in Bogota. More than a restaurant it’s a unique gastronomic experience. The chef’s creativity, devotion to high quality and exclusively Colombian ingredients, variety of dishes challenging traditional concepts, coupled with outstanding service, makes El Chato a must visit for any foodie. Congratulations to El Chato’s team.
Be the first to ReplyThe best restaurant in Bogotá!
I don't know if we were lucky when visiting this restaurant because after looking at other reviews, our experience was way different - amazing from start to finish. We were greeted by a friendly member of staff who directed us to the second floor where we had an intimate + delicious tasting menu, and all of that in front of the kitchen. We had the chance to try epic dishes, from bisques, to fish and meat. It all started with a vegetable bisque (the richest 'soup' appetizer I've had in ages), followed by their take on leche de tigre served inside a granadilla - yum! We then got served the a fantastic pate made out of chicken heart and berries on a tapioca cracker. Things got even better as the stronger flavours started to arrive, such as the grilled oyster with pear spheres, bone marrow with snails (my night's favourite), a smoked trout wrapped in filo pastry, pasta with goats cheese with the grand finale being a mix of angus and wagyu meat with an ant bearnaise sauce. And don´t forget to get the coca dessert cake (if they still have it) to finish your experience on a high-sweet note. What a display of techniques, flavours and creative dishes - thank you all for making this the best dinner we had in Bogotá.

I had made reservations in advance to eat at El Chato. You have to put a deposit, but it's applied to your meal when you pay. I think we had to put a deposit of 50,000 COP. We were visiting the day before voting day, so it meant no alcohol was being served. We made due with some juice sodas. Food was really good - we ordered about 5 plates to share, as it's kind of tapas-style and then had 2 desserts. I really enjoyed the prawns and X really liked the steak with ant sauce. The only negative was the service - towards the end of our meal, it took forever to find our server or flag anyone down to ask for a dessert menu - and then it took even longer to get someone to bring us the check. We did feel a bit forgotten near the end of our meal.
Be the first to ReplyOverrated. There’s better in Bogota
Was told that when in Bogota you must go to El Chato. One of the top 50 restaurants in Latin America with an amazing award winning reputation. Not tonight! It started bad and ended worse. Only available times on the website for Monday were 7 & 9:30. Made reservations for 7 and when we arrived we gave them our name and got a strange look. We were seated at the very first table in the front even though the entire restaurant was empty. No menu, no QR tag and as we sat the hostess came over again to ask for the reservation. We showed her the email confirmation and she walked away. A waiter came over and said he spoke English and asked if we wanted to move to his section. We knew if we didn’t move we would never be served, so we got up and moved to the other side of the restaurant. The menu is very limited with only offering 5 entrees and a tomahawk steak. We ordered drinks, appetizers, and asked about the fish of the day. It was Corvina and that’s what I ordered. My husband ordered the Tuna. Waiter came back and said, they were out of Corvina but had another white fish. 5 minute later we were told they were out of Tuna. How does a top rated restaurant run out of the only fish on the menu and not mention it when you’re ordering. Squid app was bland. Fish of the day… very boney with a brown sauce that had no taste and I’m not quite sure what the trout was. It looked like 3 over fried greasy spring rolls stuffed with sour cream and raw trout. Trust me no special flavors here. Major lack of communication. Service was ok, nothing to brag about. When a restaurant like this is so highly rated, it’s such a disappointment when it doesn’t own up.
Be the first to ReplyService is key and here it was... Disappointing :(
At top notch restaurants like el Chato, one expects a decent service and unfortunately, it was way below mid-range restaurants average. I hope it is not the type of restaurant where if you do not have a famous name, waiters will snob you. Food was OK, maybe I had over expectations on the chef. Experience: We asked the waiter for advise and he proposed the Ceviche (which is not the best dish in the menu). We replied that there is an excellent Peruvian restaurant for ceviche and that we were not going to take this dish. Couple of minutes later another waiter served us the ceviche.Although we insisted that we did not order it, he was not aware of the situation. Thus, with the dish in front of us, we decided to keep it. Bad experience: 1) The waiter who passed the order never came to apologise or to see what was wrong 2) When we asked for the check, ceviche was included. We signified that we did not ordered from him and he insisted that we did 3) The waiter went to the cashier and discussed with the manager (I believe). The manager did not even came and the waiter said well 'its your word against mine' 4) We of course payed for the ceviche but not even one coffee was proposed for the inconvenience My take : We did not ordered the ceviche. Ok if we have to pay it as we did eat it but not even coming to apologise through the service, at the end basically opposing my word to his and finally not offering a small gesture (a simple coffee at least) is a NO WAY for a restaurant. Hope this won't happen again to any other customer
Be the first to ReplyIncredible new flavours.
One of the best meals I’ve had. The Pork Belly was incredibly & the chicken was moist and tasty. The deserts should not be missed. The flavours, textures are unique. They make amazing cocktails and have some great aged rum.
