El Chato Bogotá Reviews from The Last Year
Overrated
We went with quite a few expectations. The food can be as they describe, signature, gourmet, etc. but it is not delicious. You cannot enjoy something delicious, many people say that you have to go to this restaurant with an open mind but that does not mean not eating delicious food, occasionally going to the trendy restaurant does not guarantee you an otherworldly experience. Food, no matter how avant-garde or innovative, should be enjoyed. The menu we got (April 2024) is short and not very varied, the only thing that was redeemable was the morrillo. Several of the dishes for which they were previously known and that we wanted to try (rib eye, etc.) are no longer on their menu (I understand that they rotate it from time to time). Overall an average experience, some dishes tasted bad. We have definitely eaten better in other places and also in restaurants of a similar “category”, perhaps we were not lucky with the menu we got this season, but hey, if you decide to give it the opportunity, keep in mind that it could be your best experience or a disappointment. It didn't seem expensive to us.
Wonderful experience in Bogota
Wonderful colombian food experience. Beautiful informal ambiance and everything was great from cocktails to starters to main dish . Robalo was great but wellington of tuna was simply excelent. Valet parking also makes your life much easier in this area of Bogota
It's worth trying
Very nice ambience with very attentive service, the idea is to share the dishes, portions often have 3 pieces, beautifully presented and excellent taste. Top: oysters, beetroot salad, tuna wellington
Good food, horrendous rushed feeling
This restaurant came very highly rated, and the food was good, but the entire time I felt pressured to eat and leave as soon as possible. The approach within the restaurant was abominable. I don't blame the servers: this must be coming directly from the restaurant manager. It was so intense it bordered on insulting. It felt as though a waiter was waiting to pounce and rip the glass out of my hand as soon as it left my lips.
Incredible positive experience
Absolutely outstanding culinary experience. Have been here 2 times within 2 nights. First night took the degustation menu with Wine pairing, second night expected to order a-la-carte, but the chef created another special tasting for me! Also, the sommelier knows his job - thanks for an interesting selection of top wines. Not to forget the charming ladies, who are serving your food! All in all an absolute 5-star experience, worth the money. Don’t understand, why this unique restaurant doesn’t have 5 points on Trioadvisor …
Colombian ingredients taken to their maximum expression
Probably one of the best restaurants I have been to in my life. The chef uses Colombian ingredients and recipes and takes them to their maximum expression, with recipes equivalent to those of the best restaurants in the world. The smoked morrillo is excellent and their ice cream is ten, but so are the rest of the dishes. To repeat many times. Excellent quality/price ratio and service of ten.
“50 Best” experience!!!!!
It was an excellent experience, everything was very well coordinated and organized. The attention of the entire team was extraordinary, excellent service timing and everyone was very kind. We chose the tasting menu experience, and we didn't regret it. Presentation, mix of flavors, very well defined textures in all dishes. Honestly, an experience to repeat. Thank you to the entire team for your attention and professionalism!!!
Excellent-ish
Mainly food was very innovative and well prepared. The only thing with the food was that in many portions there were 3 pieces - and same time we were recommended to share plates. That is bit funny when most of the companies consisted of 2 or 4 persons. What irritated me was the use of Italian bottled water when Colombia has excellent waters of they own.
A new impact menu
An exceptional gastronomic experience in Bogotá! El Chato captivates from the first moment with its cozy and elegant atmosphere. Chef Álvaro Clavijo personally serves you, sharing his passion for Colombian cuisine and explaining the use of only local ingredients in each dish. Its inspiration comes from the richness of the Colombian land and culture, creating a unique and authentic culinary experience. In addition, the incredible collection of fermented foods that he incorporates into the pairing of his new menu adds an extra dimension of flavor and complexity. The new kitchen is a spectacle in which you can see all the action of fine dining, from preparation to service. It is no surprise that El Chato is the 2nd best restaurant in Latin America, a well-deserved distinction for this temple of Colombian gastronomy!
Lousy food
The new menu has dishes with bad taste, the quantity is small and the menu is limited. The dishes are sold out and there are no alternatives. The dishes: 1) papada are very thin slices with lettuce, 2) the empanadas are too small, 5 units, the sauce is spicy but has a good flavor. 3) the skewers are only 3 units and the taste is average, nothing special. 4) the crab comes shredded, it comes with kiwi and peas, the flavor is strong, I didn't like it 6) a dessert with ice and a green powder is salty, I didn't like it either, finally 5) the morrillo has a good flavor, it comes with banana , eggplant and tomato, the only redeemable dish, although the quantity is still very small.
Forgotten orders
As our last meal in colombia I was excited for our reservation at this top rated restaurant. However service was very disorganized and food was ok. Since we were a big group we ordered everything on the menu a la carte. We were not told that they were out of one of the menu items until I noticed it was missing at the end of our meal. This is very concerning as they only had 12 items and could have easily mentioned it at any point. Either they did not notice or were hoping we wouldn't notice, in both cases quite unprofessional. In addition one of us ordered a simple cafe con leche (coffee with milk) which took us 3 requests to finally receive. Our water glasses were also left empty throughout most of our meal. I understand it can get busy so we requested to leave a bottle of water at the table and yet they did not. We had people at our table who spoke Spanish so language was not an issue. Our waiter was nice but overall very inexperienced. The food itself was mediocre. There were only 3 out of the 12 that I found to be actually tasty. The overall meal was not bad, but lacking in the unique flavors you typically expect in fine dining.
How is this one of the best restaurants in the world?
Really disappointing experience at El Chato. From the table, the service and to their attitude towards food allergy. Despite booking in April for dinner in February we were given a really bad table in a restaurant that wasn't even full! People who came in after (same size group) were given much better. At times there were 5 members of staff standing in a small space behind my husband's seat, drying glasses - it felt like they were on top of us! Service was terrible. There was one good member of staff - the rest were sub-standard. Nobody offered us the menu for dessert and had to ask. We then waited 20 minutes to order a dessert which was pretty bad. We counted 10 staff and still nobody came in what was a half full space. The food itself was OK, some good some not so. I explained I was allergic to peanuts and was assured that there would be none in my food by our waiter. When our food came I asked another member of staff what a nutty smelling sauce was and he said it was made from a type of peanut (my Spanish is good enough to know exactly what he was saying) so I was immediately put of the food and sent it back. Our waiter who spoke English said it was something that looked like peanut (I can comprehend the difference and that is definitely not what the person I questioned said). It reduced my trust in the whole restaurant. No apology. El Chato has two different dining offerings and we had booked a la carte. Back in August I contacted the restaurant to swap to the tasting menu but my request was ignored. That is fair enough if the restaurant was booked up for that option. However, you would expect a better experience when eating a la carte. This is one of the 50 best restaurants in the world and is by far the worst experience of all of the restaurants we have eaten at from the current list and others which had appeared on it before (and and it was by far the worst of all the best dining spots we ate at in the country (we ate at LEO, Celele, Humo Negro and Mesa Franca during the 2 1/2 weeks we were in Colombia). It was a really disappointing last night meal of our holiday. Avoid unless you are happy with poor service and underwhelming food.
