Cracked & Battered San Francisco Reviews from The Last Year
Sitting on the hills of Potrero Hill, this cute brunch spot
Sitting on the hills of Potrero Hill, this cute brunch spot truly delivers some good frickin chicken. Very crispy outside and juicy inside with a special sauce on the side makes Chicken and Waffles a truly special dish you can enjoy anytime of the day. The portions are outstanding and the service here is awesome and very attentive. I had the burrito which was really good too but after seeing my partner's chicken and waffles I regretted that decision and will need to try it next time around. If you're ever around in these parts of the city you gotta try Cracked and Battered.

Possibly the best breakfast/brunch I have had in San Francisco. Ordered the BIG plate and an oat milk vanilla latte. Nothing at all disappointed. EVERYTHING was delicious. Starting with the latte - perfectly smooth with each drink, hog-quality coffee beans and just a touch of vanilla. There are only two brands of oat milk any cafe should use, Califia or Kirkland. Thank you for using Califia oat milk. The plate. I seriously thought I was going to have to take some home. No way. From the first bite to the last, it was perfect. I won't go too much into details, but you must try this place. Definitely a must go to place anytime someone is visiting the area.

The food was so good I got the chicken & waffles and the french toast and both were super good. The restaurant was pretty small, but I went for a bunch on a weekday and got indoor seating without a reservation. You order from a QR code on your phone, which is convenient so you don't have to figure out how to split the bill after. The food came out pretty quickly, and the waiter and host came over often to check that everything was okay. 10/10 will definitely come back again!
Delicious food.
Wonderful hospitality! Huge plus that it's halal! They even brought out a special dessert for my nephews 10th birthday!

My first time here and I LOVED it!! The food was delicious and service was great! We were nervous to sit outside in the patio area since it was a little chilly but we were pleasantly surprised by the protection from the wind. The C&B plate was a lot of food but would highly recommend since it includes a little bit of everything.
Service is always great and food is delicious.
Very well seasoned and chicken isn't dry!!

Maybe it's just me, but when I think of this stretch of 18th Street in Potrero Hill, "brunch" immediately comes to mind. Granted, it doesn't take much for my brain to start thinking about the best meal of the day, but it seems like there's no shortage of attractive options along these few blocks. There's Plow, Chez Maman East, Cracked & Battered...okay, maybe there aren't THAT many. However, there haven't been many that have jumped off the page like how Cracked & Battered has! When it comes to the things that I look for a brunch spot to have, Cracked and Battered checks a lot of those boxes. There's both indoor and outdoor dining, the vibes are great, there's plenty of nearby parking, and, perhaps most significantly, there's never much of a wait (unlike Plow up the street, though there's a reason why they are one of the best anywhere). However, the menu here is what I find most appealing. While it may not be super extensive, it's got a number of appealing and unique options, from their fried chicken and waffles and ricotta pancakes to their Shakshuka and Nasi Goreng, which was really unexpected to see (and the one thing we knew we had to try). -- THE C&B PLATE - Four Fluffy Mini Waffles Topped with Berries and Whipped Butter with One Boneless Fried Chicken Thigh, Golden Potatoes, and Two Eggs...$20 Their namesake plate felt like a must and it didn't disappoint! The batter on the chicken was crunch, the chicken was moist, and the eggs and potatoes were well cooked. As for the waffles, they had a nice crunch to them, but they started to soften as they sat on the plate (still tasted fine, though). -- NASI GORENG - Indonesian Chicken Fried Rice with Cabbage, Cilantro, Garlic, Onions, and Two Eggs...$18 This immediately jumped off the page when we saw this, but sadly, it was a miss for me. While the chicken was fine (other than how the egg made the batter soggy), the rice wasn't very good. Not only was it heavily sauced, but the rice was hard/undercooked, too. Pass. -- FRIED CHICKEN SANDWICH - Boneless Fried Chicken Thigh with Lemony Cabbage Slaw, Crackin' Sauce, and Pickles on a Toasted Bun...$17 Came back just to try this and it was actually pretty decent. The chicken was just as crispy in the sandwich (on the edges, at least) and was seasoned nicely while the slaw had a nice bit of acidity that cut through everything. However, the bun felt a little bready and dry. -- FRENCH FRIES (Sandwich Add On Portion)...$2.50 It worried me that the fries were paler than I expected, but they weren't too shabby. The fries were a little starchy, but they were crispy and only lightly salted (in a good way). Still, had I known they had tots, I would've gotten that because tots. As far as service goes, the staff is really nice and the food comes out fairly quickly However, it's weird how you're directed to order/pay after scanning your table's QR code only to have it fail and have to order through a server anyways. That said, I also just hate the whole QR code process at restaurants in general, despite the beneficial convenience for both sides, so it'd be fair to say I'm heavily biased. Even though I feel like there were things about our food that could've been better, my visits here have been extremely far from "bad". In fact, they were perfectly fine and, from the looks of the reviews from my fellow Yelpers, it's apparent that I'm in the minority. Still, THREE AND A HALF STARS rounded down feels right, though don't be surprised if you see me update this review to a four sooner rather than later.
TLDR: Delicious food, generous portions, and great
TLDR: Delicious food, generous portions, and great location, but definitely more of a no-frills place. If the wait at Plow is too long, this is an awesome alternative. Not the crispiest fried chicken I've ever had, and this would have been perfect if the chicken had more of a crunch, but the seasoning and overall taste of the chicken was spot-on and I surprisingly still loved it despite it almost looking soggy (?). Trust me though, the chicken is very good. You order with a QR code so everyone can order individually, and the food comes out shortly afterward. ------ FOOD: 1. Chicken and Waffles (4.5/5) - Would have been 5/5 if the chicken were crispier and if the waffles also had crispier edges. The chicken was SO well-seasoned and tender. The waffles were on the fluffier side, and actually were slightly more salty than sweet (also because of the small scoop of whipped salted butter on top). The sweet syrup and strawberry slices helped balance out the flavors. 2. Fried Chicken Benedict (4.5/5) - This was SO good. The hollandaise sauce here is super creamy and eggy - I loved it. The buttermilk biscuits were also a great vessel for all of this. Also would be a 5/5 with crispier chicken. ------ SERVICE: * There's no place to make a reservation online (at least not from what I could find) so you can call ahead or just wait a little bit when you get there in person. On a Saturday around 11:30 there was just a short 5-10 minute wait for a table for our group of 4. * No frills place but they do still check in on you, bring you water, and refill your water. It's no frills in that you order with a QR code, and the furniture is all relatively basic, like plastic chairs for the outdoor seating * If you do sit outside, I'd recommend coming with a slightly larger group to sit in a parklet vs sitting at one of the tables for two on a slanted sidewalk ------ ENVIRONMENT / AMBIANCE: * Such a cute little neighborhood with a nice bookstore at the end of the block and various coffee shops in the surrounding blocks. * There's lots of a parking around given Potrero is very residential
Great spot for brunch.
Good food. Easy QR code ordering and payment. Note to owner: you should have toothpicks.
