Beautiful view and food but disappointing service
We enjoy going to fine dining restaurants at home so we were looking forward to visiting this place. The view was gorgeous, we had a table overlooking the sea and the food was very good with fresh, clean flavours. However, as the evening progressed the service became less attentive and ended poorly. We were not offered coffee or a post dinner drink and it took a long time to find a waiter to pay our bill. This was despite what appeared to be a Maitre D' overlooking the tables. This spoiled what could have been a special experience and we left feeling disappointed.
Incredible fine dining experience!
Perfect viewing point of the ocean! Food was incredible, fresh and full of flavourful. Highlight of our trip to Maderia! The fish of the day was next level and the dark chocolate dessert was amazing!
Critical Review of AVISTA - Mediterrâneo
Having dined at numerous esteemed restaurants worldwide, our recent visit to AVISTA - Mediterrâneo at Cliff Bay, Funchal, stands out as one of the greatest disappointments in years. Cliff Bay is renowned for its exceptional service and culinary experiences, but sadly, this restaurant falls drastically short of the standard. From the moment we arrived, the issues were evident. Despite being seated promptly, we noticed that two tables who arrived after us were handed menus while we were left waiting. It wasn’t until we approached the staff that we were finally given menus. This initial oversight set a poor tone for the evening. The service continued to falter throughout the meal. The head waiter, though seemingly kind, appeared utterly disorganized and indifferent. He wandered aimlessly around the restaurant and, shockingly, was often seen engrossed in his phone. This lack of attentiveness and oversight was not what we expected from a restaurant within the Cliff Bay establishment. The coordination between the kitchen and the waitstaff was equally disappointing. The food, while generally fine in taste, was served lukewarm. Particularly notable was the pepper sauce, which was served cold, further highlighting the lack of synchronization. This detracted significantly from the dining experience and suggested a fundamental flaw in the restaurant’s operational management. The evening’s nadir came with the dessert service. The otherwise delightful mango dessert was displayed in a portable cooling unit near the restroom, with a hand sanitizer pump stationed above it. This careless placement, leaving the desserts exposed, destroyed any remaining confidence we had in the establishment’s hygiene and overall presentation standards. In stark contrast, just two days prior, we had an impeccable dining experience at Ristorante Villa Cipriani, merely 100 meters away. The service there was exemplary and met all our expectations. It is evident that AVISTA - Mediterrâneo could benefit from a complete overhaul in management, particularly the immediate replacement of the head waiter, to prevent the restaurant from tarnishing Cliff Bay’s esteemed reputation. Until such changes are made, we strongly advise diners to walk the extra distance to Ristorante Villa Cipriani for a far superior dining experience.

Five star prices with 2 star food. Meal arrived luke warm and one dish forgotten completely. Not an experience we want to repeat.
A wonderful experience!
We arrived at our scheduled time. 9:30 PM. Beautiful location, friendly staff. We were welcomed promptly and in no time the drinks were served. Our hosts guides us as we ordered our pre ans main courses. I had the croquettes and the beef filet. All in all, a great experience with hosts that loved their job. The food was the best I've tasted so far in 2024! Special thanks to our sommelier for his great enthusiasm ans knowledge.
Lovely spot - but can be expensive
This is a beautiful spot, especially if you are seated near to the cliff edge. The service was friendly and professional. Most of the food was very good, although it is not at the cheap end of the market. The large sharing steak however was a little disappointing, especially given its very heavy price tag. In future we will avoid that.

Had an amazing dinner here and if you like fine food with a fantastic view with excellent service definitely go here. Booking in advance as gets booked and suggest doing before you arrive. They have a great place to have a drink if you don’t want to dine though!
Big disppointment
Come here if you want to ruin one of your nights in Madeira. I have never written a public review in all the restaurants I've been to in 25 years plus of going to top class places, so, here.....To be clear the food was good, and the view is nice, but never have I experienced a service remotely as bad as this place. It is mind boggling. So, I came here a few days ago for a drink, and at the time they told me to sit down outside and service would come. After 20 or so minutes I proceeded to get my own drink from the bar and the same when it came to paying. Unfortunately, the restaurant experience was even worse than the bar experience. Knowing what I did, I sat down and asked for a bottle of water and the house cocktail as soon as I came in. It took another two orders of water, and finally after 23 minutes I received a bottle of water. Shortly after my cocktail would arrive. When it came to drinks or food it was no better. The food would arrive but never a drink. Enjoy your pork without the red wine etc, Why should it take 20mins+ for a glass of wine to get to your table? What makes this even more silly is that I started ordering while I would still have wine in my glass, yet I would each time be left waiting. The bar needs more staffing, but the rest of the front of house also had no clue. If you realise a a guest is unhappy, surely you would look out for them? Not here. It was two and a half hours of pure frustration, perfect way to ruin an evening of your holiday, left without desert, and am now siting here typing this review rather than enjoy a drink..... I honestly have no idea how this place scored a Michelin star…..if you have the patience of an angel, and I mean half an hour per drink, come here, otherwise any where else is better….
Unusual food for Madeira in a good way!
What an excellent find and part of the hotel cliff bay where we were staying we found it hard to get a table here even though we were staying at the hotel they seemed fully booked until late but we decided to stroll along anyway and take a chance and luckily they fitted us in it looked half empty! Anyway, the food was amazing fantastic flavours well presented great service good selection of wines and good knowledge from the wine waiter. Great seating fire pit umbrellas everything there you could need for all weathers and fantastic views but do ask for a Seaview table or you may get put at the back I would definitely recommend this restaurant. It’s not all sushi on the menu is some cooked fish as well and a vegetarian option.
Lovely but standard European fare
Good food, amazing view. Service was a little formal at the beginning but became friendly by the end. Cocktails were great, appetizers were OK, mains were amazing. A lovely experience, but not very Portuguese or Madeirense. If you are hoping for a modern European / American cuisine, this will satisfy you.
Wonderful Avista
My wife, daughter, son in law and myself had lunch here and we all had a delightful experience. The food was top notch and the service was fantastic. The staff were very engaging and helpful and we had a few laughs and jokes throughout the meal with the staff. Everything, from the view of the bay, the cocktails, the wine, the food and the service, was wonderful, and we would recommend Avista to anybody who likes fine dining at a very reasonable price. Keep up the good work!
Classy dining in a room with a view
The name of the red means “the view” and it is superb. The surroundings inside are plain and clean, almost Scandinavian in style. The waiting staff are attentive and helpful and there is no pressure at all on you to decide on your meal. The food is varied and Italian in style and expensive, as you would expect in a restaurant of this quality with its Michelin recognition. You can choose from the A La Carte or go for an “Innovation Menu “ in which you choose either 4 or 6 courses for a fixed price. You can also do wine pairing with them or choose a wine from the extensive wine list. The food is good, no question. The quantities are not huge but beautifully presented. However I have to say that the fish stew I had on the 4 course Bistro innovation menu was very generous and it took 3 bowls to finish it, which, although I am a foodie and love good food, I also like to have a meal and not just an experience, so I appreciated that. So if you like good food, very well presented by good waiters in a very nice setting, this is for you. If not there are plenty of other restaurants in the area you can choose from.
Wonderful Experience
The tuna steak was amazing, overall definitely worth a visit whilst in Madeira, the service and the food were amazing and as a plus you have the wonderful view to the sea if you seat outside.
Sadly disappointed
Good food but very disappointed with the service experience. As a General Manager from 5 star hotel, I normally try to switch off my eye for detail when dinning out with family because mistakes are always everywhere and that is fine. But in this occasion, I must say - there is some serious improvement needed. There were several occasions for recovery throughout the dinning experience but nothing was done. Truly sad because our concierge highly recommended this place for this special occasion.
Outstanding
It’s rare when I travel I’d consider going back to a restaurant but this for me had to be the exception. I hadn’t booked and recommend you do. However, from the warm reception from the very lovely Catia, nothing from that point was going to be a problem. Aside the fact the view has to be among one of the best in Funchal, the food is exceptional. On Monday, I had the beef and Wednesday, the chicken. Whilst both were delicious, I highly recommend the beef. It is sublime. The service is as good as the food. It’s welcoming, informal, efficient and very friendly. The staff are clearly all very knowledgeable and all, without exception, so very good at what they do. With regards cost, I was flying solo and had just a main, with sides and a soft drink. Based on what I paid? I reckon if you’re looking at a couple of courses, wine, coffee etc you’re probably looking around 100€ a head? Without hesitation, excellent value. If you’re unsure about where to go, look no further and enjoy. Thank you all for making me feel so welcome. Gil x

Fabulous Lunch
I was veeeeeerry skeptical that this would work, particularly at a restaurant as hard to get into as Nobu Malibu, and it was perfect! We had lunch outside on the patio and it was fabulous!

Ok at this point I've attended a reservation purchased on AT by a friend and sold a reservation personally. Both worked pretty smoothly, nothing sketchy about it. A few areas for improvement including a way to more directly communicate between buyers and sellers, but the app always seems to be in development. AT customer support is really(!) responsive and helpful too if you have questions!

As a seller, I like the fact i have the ability now to transfer money out of my AT account and into a bank account. Makes getting the money much easier then the process before.

Whose name will my reservation be under when I arrive at the venue?
It can be under your name or a name you choose! Some reservation offers already include the AppointmentTrader Transfer Service which will transfer the reservation in to your name. If its not included you can add it on after buying the reservation for a small fee. One thing on that though: As many reservations become available at last minute, taking a reservation in someone else name is quick and great for privacy. Most reservations on AT are listed with a virtual phone number, so all you need to do is present the phone number at the hostess stand and you are good to go!
Payouts Blocked Because of Sell Through Rate
Does anyone know how AT plans to handle cases where a seller is quitting the platform but has a sell through rate <25%? The error message I got said to fill more bids or find other ways to increase the rate.
Is AT really going to block sellers from withdrawing their money? Especially revenue made before the sell through rate was introduced??

If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.

Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
Where do the Reservations on AppointmentTrader come from?
Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.
What happens if my bid expires unanswered?
Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.
