Alta Los Angeles Reviews from The Last Year
Mac and cheese was dry.
Kinda over priced for what it is. Corn bread was also drey and crumbly. Food took a little while to come out. But drinks were very very good.
Firstly, we received an amazing welcome.
The food was delicious, & the new artwork was a nice touch. Alta Adams is one of my favorite restaurants in LA!

I love this place! Service is always great and, most importantly, the food always hits! Plus, the bartender always makes me a delicious drink!
Everything is a 10/10.
Best fried chicken I've ever had. House brisket, shrimp and grits, chicken and waffles and not to mention a perfect iced oat milk latte.
Nazareth- Wow.
Needs training. Loves using the word Miss and telling you that he is being friendly while cutting you off and being condescending. After our first $100 round of drinks we left due to his unrelenting rudeness. Would have easily done another 3 to 4 rounds plus food. Now for how the interactions started. I walk in and say hello, he responds with, if you are a walk in, its going to be 8:15 to 8:30. Hour wait is fine with me however maybe you start with hello. Lady behind me walks in and he greets her with, "well aren't you a fresh breath of air." I mentioned that my group already checked in and pointed to the rest of my party that was patiently waiting. Realizing the mistake of assumption was made, here is an opportunity to turn things around....... Not his response. He then made sure we were even more uncomfortable (Girlfriend, Her Best Friend and 9 year old son) by asking us to stop crowding the waiting area. He asked us to move to the side bar/chef kitchen table to stay out of the way. Then told us that children cannot be at the bar. (where he asked us to go). To add insult to injury, the 8:30 quote was not met and we watched plenty of walk in customers get seated ahead. He let me know honestly that i was not a regular and i shouldn't expect to be seated before his regulars. All three of us work in the industry and live in the neighborhood. We know how to treat people and have similar expectations around how we should be treated. I honestly hope that this restaurant is busy 7 days a week as we were made to feel that they did not need us as patrons. Reason for 2 stars vs. 1.... Bar staff was very friendly and very knowledgably.

We stopped in for a bite to eat before heading out to an event. We were happily greeted by the staff and ushered to a requested outside table. Our server was actually a worker in the Adams Wine Shop. He was a pure delight, our visit was a while ago but I believe his name was Jerry. He proceeded to tell us about the wine selections and helped us peruse the menu. I settled on the shrimp & grits with a side of fries. The shrimp was a little bit undercooked but the grits were perfect so it made the dish good. The fries were excellent.

Amazing atmosphere, food is A1, and the staff are super friendly. Plenty of different seating options depending on the type of mood you are in.
Food and service are A1.
I've loved this neighborhood staple since the first time I tried it and I love that it is equally loved by the community. Great! Highly recommended.

If you wanna eat fantastic food with bold flavors, listen to good music, and vibe with delicious drinks and cool ambiance, then this is the place to be!! I was so happy with all the food selections they had. You can tell that there is a lot of love and passion that goes into not only the food, but the service as well. We will absolutely be bringing back more friends with us, as well as coworkers. For recommendations, definitely can't go wrong with the salmon. Fresh, flakey, filled with flavor! Love the steak with the cowboy butter. Absolutely amazing, thick, juicy, and large portion. To be honest, all the portions were large, and I love that when I go to places because it's worth it to spend my money and I love good left overs. I feel like I can name the whole menu, but the deviled eggs were the best I've had, aside from the ones my husband makes. If you're a wine lover, this is the place to be!! Great wine selections, and they do not disappoint. Also loved the pork chop and fish with the yuzza sauce under it. Oh and sides that are a MUST - cornbread, Mac and cheese, greens, and yams sopped up in this butter. I'm telling you, this place is going to get more and more popular, they are already super busy. If I could eat there everyday I would. I'm obsessed and can't stop thinking about the flavors that were dancing in my mouth and belly. We will be coming back for suuure and with more people.

Great food, and enjoyed our seat at the chef's counter getting to watch the action. The fish was superb, and everything we tried was delicious. We had dinner reservations, and they were ready promptly when we arrived. While they finished getting things set up it was no issue to order our first drinks at the bar. The service was informative and friendly, and made us feel welcome. Would definitely come back again. Great local spot to add to west Adams, and appreciate their vision and vibe.
I'm sorry that this place didn't measure up after reading
I'm sorry that this place didn't measure up after reading about and all the hype, and because it's a Black owned restaurant, but it was a major disappointment. The service staff was fine, and the ambiance of the place is okay, but they need to work on the temperature control as it was a little cold in there and cooled off the food too quickly. And going further on the food it's way too overpriced for the portions you receive and the taste is sorely lacking. Seasoning is either nonexistent or too heavy trying to overcompensate. I ordered the "fried chicken", which according to the server is brined and then cooked in the oven, all the seasoning was in the coating not the rest of the meat, and I had to send back some because it was undercooked. They told me the chicken was fully cooked but the brine process made it look like it wasn't, I know uncooked meat when I see it. I also ordered the mac and cheese which was awful, it had a heavy smoky flavor to it, and too many cheese varieties used in it and a mushroom béchamel which made it really weird. The cornbread should've been foolproof but it was as dry as the Sahara, and crumbled at the touch. And I ordered the ginger limeade and it was horrible, changed it out to a lemonade and that was a watery concoction that begged for help. All in all I was disappointed with the food and prices all around, a shame really.
A bit of a disappointment.
I've been waiting to try this place for over a year and it was let down: the server was kind but the service fell off as the night went on. The food is just okay. The salmon was a large portion, but it was undercooked. The highlight was as the sweet potato dumplings/gnocchi. I would not recommend the Mac and cheese or cornbread which were very dry and came in small portions. I wouldn't blame you for giving this place a try, but I will not be a repeat for me.
This was our 2nd trip to Alta.
The first time was brunch and this time dinner. The chef takes southern soul food and puts their unique twist on them and the outcome is delicious. The interior space is lovely as well!

I took a friend for a birthday dinner on Sunday! When I made the reservation, I was asked if it was a special occasion and I said yes! Thought she would've gotten a comp dessert! Wrong! I ate at Alta a year ago and thought it was overpriced then, but wanted to give it another try! The first time I was there, sides were included with each entree! This time all sides were extra! The portions are laughable! My shrimp and grits was served in a shallow dinner salad side bowl! The collard greens side was served in a shallow bowl the size of a saucer! I don't like to feel that I've been ripped off and will never return to Alta! Instead, I'll cross the street and have a lovely, reasonably priced meal at Vick's All Day! Also, this is the second time I had to wait to be seated after making a reservation for 5:30 ( opening time)!
Pro: AMAZING food, good prices.
CON: Poor service (very friendly but inattentive and slow), weak drinks. Feels like a restaurant run by a truly gifted chef who hired friends rather than an experienced waitstaff. If the serving staff was more professional and the caps a little looser on the booze (I was the DD, but those in my party didn't feel so much as a buzz after two drinks), this would be a true five-star restaurant. You should DEFINITELY eat here because the food is insanely good, but be prepared for slow service and to have to ask for things you'd expect to show up on their own. Worth the trouble IMHO, but one member of our party said they won't go back.

Not once have I written a review for a host at a restaurant, but here I am! We came for Valentine's Day, and we were seated about 45 minutes after our reservation time. Little frustrating after making a reservation, but Nazereth was a great communicator during the process and did an AMAZING job with the remainder of the patrons that were a little less patient. A+ service Food was great, but it was also priced pretty high! Overall a good experience
Good Food, but Not Michelin Quality
We recently went to Alta to have dinner with another couple. We tried several items on the menu. Most were very good. The cocktails left a lot to be desired. The martini flight was horrible. Whoever dreamed up the martini formulations should reevaluate the recipes. They were so bad that we sent them back. They also did not have a decent botanical gin to make a simple gin and tonic. The very limited draught beer selections were good. On to the food: --Deviled eggs: very good, but you only get 2 eggs for $12. --Cornbread: very good --Blackeyed pea fritters: good --Fried chicken: we ordered the 6-piece platter for the table figuring that we would get an assortment of parts, but they only serve wings, drumsticks, and the smallest chicken thighs I've ever seen. No breasts. When I pointed this out to the waiter, he said that's just the way they do it. At $29, this was not value received. --Shrimp & grits: Good, but the grits were the texture of cream of wheat. The shrimp were sweet and perfectly cooked. --Coleslaw: Very good, tangy. The waitstaff is fantastic. We were fortunate to have Jeremy as our waiter. The main room of the restaurant is extremely loud. The noise level in the second indoor dining room was manageable. They also offer outdoor seating. Valet parking is $10, but they simply park your car on the street, which you could do yourself.
An Absolute MUST!
Love, love, L-O-V-E Alta! If you the get chance to go and experience it for yourself, GO! We sat outside on the back patio for lunch, which is beautiful. It was the perfect temperature. Nazareth, the host, was so warm and welcoming. He was delightful! Rashad was behind the bar when we were there for lunch on Saturday. His jalapeno watermelon seasonal lemonade was on pointe! So tasty! Imani, our server, took wonderful care of us. And, of course, Chef Keith is a community treasure! What a gem! We were a party of 8 and we had the Cornbread with Honey Butter; Deviled Eggs; Spicy Purple Sweet Potato Soup, Toasted, Coconut, Fried Banana; Jerk-Spiced Grilled Plaintain Tacos, Mango-Habanero Sauce as starters. For entrees we had House Smoked Brisket with Apple BBQ Sauce; Fried Fish Sandwich with Spicy Tartar Sauce, Slaw, Pickles; Vegan California Gombo with Market Veggies with Smoked Tofu; and Smoked and Fried Tofu with Spicy Tartar Sauce. For sides we ordered Red Beans and Rice; Collard Greens with Smoked Oil and Vinegar; and Mac and Cheese. Everything was amazingly good! I think the soup stole the show though. If that looks interesting to you, I highly recommend!! Don't skip on the collard greens. They are vegan! Also, be sure to check out the wine shop next door. They feature women and minority winemakers. Can't wait to go back!!!
Awful all around
I really wanted to love this place and put a big star next to it on my list of places to eat on my current trip to LA. The entire meal ended up being a disaster. There were only a few tables occupied so I thought I would be able to get my food quickly. I thought wrong. I started with the black eyed pea fritters, which did come quickly but were just like they sounded. Mashed up peas that were breaded and fried. Very forgettable and at $11 for six small fritters they were extremely expensive. Things went further south from there. The staff was pushing a tandoori chicken special of the day. I guess they had a pop up recently and some chicken was left over. I decided to order it. 40 minutes later my chicken arrived. I have no idea why a half chicken should take that long, but it was a ridiculous amount of time to wait for lunch. I was hoping that at least it would be worth the wait, but was wrong again as it arrived very very dry and their definition of tandoori is bordering on a cultural misunderstanding. The entire time I waited for it I got a lot of “it should be out in a minute” comments from the staff. They actually offered to bring me a box before my food had even arrived. I didn’t come for take out. I came to enjoy a meal there. I am in the restaurant business and can tell you that if anyone had to wait 40 minutes for food at any of my restaurants I would immediately go into the mode of making things right. We were way past “sorry about the wait” territory. I would have started comping items and offering to make something that would arrive faster. When someone comes into a restaurant and drops $70 on lunch they need to leave thinking it was one of the best lunches they’ve ever had. Unfortunately for me it was one of the worst. I was hoping to go back for dinner if I liked it but I won’t be returning here again.
