Dreadful experience
Never going back here again. We had been loyal customers for many years but this visit ended that. Booked days ahead for Sunday yum cha with friends. We had two booking slots to choose from 11:00am and 1:30pm. 11AM was too early so went with 1:30pm. Upon arrival at 1:30pm we were shown upstairs (no offer of upstairs or downstairs given). Yum cha offerings that arrived on trolley were sparse, mildly warm if not cold and poor quality. Suddenly at 2:00pm yum cha trolley service ended. When questioned why we were told yum cha service upstairs ends at 2:00pm. Only goes longer if you are seated downstairs. This was never mentioned at any point until now. The staff were rude, the quality of the food was poor, we had to ask many times for additional dishes that were ordered first up for a vegetarian customer with us and it cost a fortune. Never going back again. I have already been given names of superior venues in the same area that people rave about. West Lake has lost the plot and lost a loyal group of customers.
Be the first to ReplyAnother stupid surcharge
Reasonable yum cha ruined at the end by stupid surcharges. Surcharge because it's Sunday, surcharge because I use my EFTPOS card. It's a wonder I don't get a surcharge to have a glass of water, which I had to ask for 3 times
Be the first to ReplySurcharge surprise.
We enjoyed a very nice meal and were served quickly as we were going to a show, On payment we were surprised to be charged a 15% surcharge, it was quiet Tuesday evening. We won’t be returning to this restaurant.
Be the first to ReplyAnimal cruelty at it finest
Never go to this animal abusive location, see the photos for your self. Dead / dying fish in the tank. How is this ever ok Australia? Owner & workers totally ignorant to my plea.
Be the first to ReplyVery bad service
Very bad service. The waitress was so rude and old man as well. Last time I went there at lunch time, she simply said No Seat to me while there were so mnay seat empty. I was asking for mango juice, he replied No back to me straightaway. So inpatient, and the quality of dishes is terrible. Will never go again!
Be the first to ReplyFood Is Good But Customer Service Lacks Common Sense
My spouse and I went after the tennis open late in the evening. It seemed like every step of meal had to be initiated by us. No initiative to come back to take our order. Neglecting to bring glasses of water and a pot of tea after we requested it. We had to ask twice and I witnessed another table getting up to ask for water. Waiter made a snide remark when we asked for dinner plates (twice) and then brings us dessert size plates. What are we suppose to do, eat from the serving platters? They never came by to ask how the food was and not one finished serving plate or anything was cleared from our table during the entire meal. On the other hand the food was tasty and enjoyable. Excellent wok flavor with our fried noodle dish. Won soup was good. Too bad the poor service and attitude didn’t match the cuisine level of satisfaction.

I visited Westlake Chinese restaurant (Bourke St, Melbourne) on 9/01 for yum cha. Seemed like a good idea at the time. Let’s say customer service isn’t their forte… When I walked through the door the so called Maître D stood in the middle of the restaurant, not even acknowledging me. I walked to him. Anyway, after being seated, a waitress came by and served me some tea. Then waited for 10 minutes or so before the ladies with the trolleys came by with food. Picked a couple of dishes and requested one specific one. “It’s coming” came the reply, so I waited…a bit later some dishes came & one of them was similar to what I wanted but not quite that I was after, so I asked the waitress again & once more (3 x) …. On the last round the very same waitress asked “what are you after” I got up and told her that I asked her 3 times for a dish & went to pay. What annoyed me is that a lot of tables were able to order dishes not on the trolleys and got them. Is it because I couldn’t speak the language? As the same were more attentive to those who spoke the same language. That’s not acceptable as we’re all in the same country!
Be the first to ReplyWestlake is still good, but prices have jumped a lot
This is our go to restaurant when we come to Melbourne. There were 6 of us including 2 little girls, we had sweet and sour soup, roast pork, half a Peking duck and Cantonese beef, the meal overall was normal Westlake standard with the exception of of the beef which was tough and we sent it back. We replaced the beef with salt and pepper prawns which was the pick of the dishes Service was excellent as always and Westlake was still very busy, the fried rice was ok but it was lots of rice and very little extras. Prices are way up,$20 for fried rice and &40 for salt and pepper prawns
Be the first to ReplyWestlake, you’re terrible and it’s time for you to go.
I’ve been coming here regularly since 1995 . Starting when I worked for a bank in the city and up until now when I’ve been bringing my family of 5. Lunches, dinners and weekend Yum Cha have always been nice. Prior to tonight, our last visit back in May wasn’t good. We all were sick after dinner. We thought perhaps it may have been something else but tonight proved otherwise. We walked in just after 6pm, plenty of tables and more staff than rice grains. We were promptly rushed to a table but at the front near the window, but then moved by the owner to a table down the back where he said someone was sitting at that 1st table. We were swarmed by multiple waiters asking for our order before we were even given menus. This was not a good sign. I asked for some water and soft drinks for the kids but after asking us several times for our food order, they still hadn’t bought the drinks. Once the drinks came , we went to order our food. It was very obvious that both the food menu and wine list had significantly increased in price, say about 300% compared to current inflation since May. A bottle of wine that was $23.99 at the bottle shop down the street was on the menu here for $84.00. $17.00 for prawn toast - I thought that was a whole loaf but it turned out to be half a slice cut in two!! Then $15 for 5 pieces of Chinese sausage - seriously. To make it worse, all food came out cold. And when the steamed rice didn’t arrive after asking for it 4 times, we were told that they were very busy and no staff, despite 6 waiters standing idly by. Steamed rice then suddenly arrived, piping hot and burnt my son’s hand. The bowl was untidy and looked like it was some other diners left overs. They clearly just microwaved it as the steam stopped after a minute or two and it turned hard like a rock. Overall it was just terrible. Service was poor and they couldn’t care less. Despite 25 years of supporting them, this new owner who’s the protege of the original tall slim guy with the mustache, has one service for Asians and another sub level for others. Never again - NEVER!!
Be the first to ReplyIn decline. Now it’s just an expensive way to fill your stomach with oily stodge.
This was the go to place in the ‘80’s….. it’s been in a slow decline ever since. The Yum Cha selections seem like they’ve been prepared in a factory somewhere. Lightly spiced, full of salt/msg/stock powder. Service is bad with staff straight of the boat unfamiliar with southern China/cantonese food. Beer is provided without glasses unless you request them. Stay away. You’ll be disappointed!
Be the first to ReplyHorrendous service & food!
My family & I wanted to enjoy yum cha in this restaurant recently. The restaurant is filthy, but we were seated upstairs which was a cobbled together restaurant. The food took a while but came out eventually. We ordered squid but after 1 hr it never came so we went to pay. The cashier was a curt, rude man who when i enquired what the total of $11.20 was for (after he became displeased at my asking to see the receipt prior to payment), he replied 'for tea'. So $11.20 + surcharge (which i note everyone is doing now at varying % degrees) so it cost alsmost $12 for a pot of green tea - WITH NO REFILLS - for 3 people! I told him I found this ludicrous. He became cross, snapped my card and ignored me and made me pay. So $112.40 we received 9 dishes + tea of dumpings only. VERY EXPENSIVE & DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY. Do not give these people your money. They do not appreciate our custom.
Be the first to ReplyOver priced and rude and pushy staff
Had yum cha yesterday and must say it was one of the worst restaurant experiences I have ever had. So bad that we told the waitress one of the dishes was inedible. Although the restaurant was full I can't understand the popularity. The food was so so and the waitress we had was pushy and very rude. And after 90 minutes we were told - not asked - to get out because they had another booking at 1pm. I suggest anyone who still wants to eat here to bring a lot of money and someone who can read and understand Mandarin. Oh and if you are not a seafood eater - have enough money to buy yourself something else later. Almost everything on the menu has prawns in it! We left without a dessert and were very
Be the first to ReplyGreat food !!
Wow, a great array fo food on their menu, service was great and the food bill wasn't too pricey ! They welcome "walkins" !
Be the first to ReplyAwful service
Employees were disgraceful at customer service never had anything so rude. Thought I was at the Karen diner.
Be the first to ReplyOverpriced, nothing special and poor service
With so many other yum cha restaurants competing nearby it is mystifying to us why there was a queue. Upstairs was nearly empty so perhaps making people wait was a ploy? Had to ask for some chilli 3 times, twice to the same waiter and ordered pork buns after 15 minute wait when they had not arrived at our table - we left. Food was very average, waiters seemed preoccupied or unhappy and the decor is dreary. We used to eat at Plume near Highpoint before it closed and for the same money got double the flavour service and value.
Be the first to ReplyNothing special, basic Chinese food
Viewed the menu in the window so booked for dinner. The prices were not the same, higher than the outside menu. Took forever to order dinner. Priority was other tables or capturing ppl walking in, not sure. No patience whilst getting final dish. No suggestions or friendly interaction. Food was nice, but nothing special. Charge fee for EFTPOS which I thought was only for credit cards.
Be the first to ReplyTraditional Chinatown restaurant
Chinatown in little Bourke street has lost some restaurants since Covid but Westlake still exists,we enjoyed san chow bae, then sizzling filet steak and fried rice with a great bottle of stonier Pinot noir. The service was fast, and efficient, just what you expect from a little Bourke street Chinese restaurant, if you think Chinatown is struggling try Westlake
Be the first to ReplyDidn’t really tick any boxes
This Restaurant didn’t tick any of the boxes unless I included that they were open at 10pm
It was like a scene from a type of “Faulty Towers” show when a waitress came to the table next to us & swiped all the plates / cutlery etc with her forearm into a bucket trolley
Five minutes after we had ordered a waiter delivered us dishes we hadn’t ordered & when we eventually received our meal the cold rice was extremely dry as well as being stuck together in large clumps
This establishment was filthy, the food was inedible & overpriced
An affordable and varied menu
We wanted to experience Chinese food in China Town in Little Bourke Street Melbourne. As it wasn't yet evening most restaurants were closed but we were fortunate to find West Lake was open. We appreciated that they adhered to COVID regulations and once we went through the sign-in process the service we received was prompt and welcoming. The menu was varied and interesting and reasonably priced and the servings were generous.
Be the first to ReplyPoor service average food
The service was slow, staff were rude. Food was only average. Way over priced.
Do yourself a favour Give it a miss...
Shark fin soup was horrible
The shark fin soup was revolting. It as incredibly salty and made me feel sick afterwards. Would NOT recommend:(
Be the first to ReplyGood spot for an early meal if dining solo.
I went here at 5.30pm as I was a single diner & thought the restaurant would appreciate that. I was shown to a table for 4 & left alone until a young waiter rescued me with a glass of shiraz & a suggestion for spicy prawns that I had not tried before. Both the wine & the food were most enjoyable.
Be the first to ReplyWestlake has deteriorated badly
Westlake has gone downhill badly. We arrived at opening time but were told to wait outside. Normally this would be no trouble but my wife was on crutches after an operation so standing for 10 minutes was unwelcome. Surely they could have let her sit inside even if they weren’t ready to serve us. The food was mixed - some dishes were not as good as previously but some were better. There is a very marked deterioration in service across the board, not just the in the lack of care making us wait outside, but in every detail of our visit - staff seem to have no interest in serving customers. We will sadly look elsewhere for Yum Cha in future.
Be the first to ReplyGone downhill
Disappointed this time around had plenty of good meals here before but this time it was lacking the same class and service
Stood at the door for minutes while staff completely ignored us
When we walked out they they chassed us back
The service lacks
Food was average compared to other visits
In these times they need to try a lot harder
Eat anywhere else
Absolute pox. Borderline racist as the only people unsatisfied with their food / service were Anglo’s.
Sat down; straight away ordered a bottle of wine, 2 beers and 3 serves of Xiao Long Bao.
Over an hour later we were told the wine we ordered was not available, we received 2 beers and 1 cold serve of Xiao Long Bao.
Horrible establishment.
