My benchmark is Läderach. It gives anyone reading this review an idea of where I'm coming from. If you have not even heard or tasted frischschoggi, I'd suggest you move along as you wouldn't have the slightest clue and well, you obviously do not know what you're missing.
So Venchi is priced in the same category and therein lies the mystery. The chocolates, including what they claim to be handmade, taste like a mouthful of soy lecithin. My recent purchase (and I've known this brand for more than a decade) was shockingly devoid of creamy theobromine pleasure. Even a humble Caffarel gianduja would have been more satisfying.
And I'm well aware that they love to promote their chocolight range with no added sugar. Blimey, from my last haul, it sure felt like they've gone and removed sugar in just about every other chocolate product. From their success at maintaining shopfronts in prime locations, I can only conclude that I'm probably in the minority and most are quite happy savouring plastic and 'elegantly sweet' chocolate. I must be part of the clueless, waxing lyrical about creamy, intense cacao complexity in chocolate.
Do not let me even start on their gelato. When you can't even impress tastebuds (yes, mine) with a decent nocciola, it's pretty unforgivable. Creamy here doesn't quite cut it, i had to remind myself that I was in fact trying to discern a hazelnut note. Yikes!
Sadly, since returning to Singapore after living in France for 16 years, I'm taking all this very hard but as I mentioned earlier, my benchmark is a brand thats holds its own, in the same category that Venchi purports to be in. Both brands are imported into Singapore thus ensuring ingredient integrity. Perhaps the one I'm reviewing just seems to have lost its way.
But hey, who cares what I think, judging by the stellar reviews here, mediocrity rules.
Oh, and by the way, the icing on the cake. Their sales attendants in Singapore have no idea what they're selling. It's just as helpful if you read the labels and ingredient lists on the products. I'm still scratching my head over how my request for "intense & creamy" could be interpreted to be "mousse"! As such, I was informed they didn't have much of that. Come to think of it, that young lady was spot-on!
