The food was large portioned and absolutely delicious.
It was so good we were all overjoyed with it. I loved the coffee but one of our party was not crazy about it. I think it was maybe too strong but then she drank it anyway. It was fresh and hot. James was our server, he was friendly, made jokes back and forth with us and walked us through all the questions we had. The menu had a southern lean to it which is fine with me. I had the (I think it was called) the overloaded biscuits. It was fantastic. I want to know how to make that bacon jam!! The place was large, airy and a noise level like you would expect in a diner. The tables were far enough from one another that you have enough space to have a conversation without worrying about eavesdroppers. Definitely go here !

I went during the week for breakfast and the food was delicious. It is exactly as the name says....unconventional. I got the chicken & waffles, which was a cheddar and cornbread waffle definitely not your typical waffle, and the chicken tenders were moist and drizzled with a honey sriracha sauce. I was told that the chicken is fried in a pressure cooker of some sort but it really helps to keep the breast meat from drying out. It comes with something called granny gravy on the side but I was not a fan but the habanero butter OMG! I need that by the batch. I also got a side of grits to taste and they were creamy and flavorful. I was greeted by two hosts who were very nice, and they stored my backpack while I ate which I thought was very nice. I sat at one of the bar tables and Roberto the bar manager waited on me and he was awesome! Very easy to talk to, answered my questions, provided recommendations and checked on me frequently. Later another gentleman assisted and he was just as nice. The decor is chic and the establishment is well lit. They offer indoor and outdoor seating. Abstract art added a nice touch to the decor. They do offer breakfast every day until a little after 3PM and they have dinner options as well; full bar and desserts. I must say I saw plenty of the blueberry pancakes floating by and they look delicious so now I have a reason to come back.

My husband & I stopped in to Unconventional Diner while exploring DC one weekend. Very glad we did :)! The restaurant was cute and semi casual. You could turn it into a nice date if you wanted to! The ambiance was cute for any occasion! The service was great, they recommended some amazing things that we ended up trying & loving! We tried... The cast iron brussels, I didn't know I needed these in my life! They were coated in a tiki masala, which may sound out there... but it worked beautifully! The perfect crunch & spice. The mac & cheese was ridiculously delicious! I am usually really picky when it comes to mac... but they did it right! It was creamy, flavorful, and perfectly cooked! The double cheese burger & fries, and it was a mouthful! A perfect medium cook & this tasty "sexy sauce" really set the burger apart from regular. Overall a great option you are looking for tad more upscale burger. We finished with the Mango Passion Fruit sorbet, and it was the perfect closer! Creamy & the flavors were so sharp and fresh! We would definitely go back... I have my eye on that brunch menu now!

Delicious Food! Awesome Drinks! & Great Vibes! Celebrated my bestie's birthday at Unconventional Diner at it was amazing from start to finish. Reservations honored on time; seated at a nice table and our server was so sweet and kind. She recommended entree's and cocktails to start the night and we were thrilled. We enjoyed the following: 1.) Cocktail: Stone Fruit Spritzer 2.) App's: Spreads & Breads 3.) Entree's: Chicken Parm Florentine and French Dip Pappardelle 4.) Dessert: Basque Cheesecake Everything was superb!!! We couldn't have asked for a better night. Can't wait to return!! Additional perks: Street parking available; or you can park in the Cambria Hotel lot and walk 2 blocks! Super convenient!

Solid meal all around. Would definitely come back with the family.

I don't know how this place has so many reviews and so many good ones. We flew in today and I looked on here to find a place and it looked good but the food is just not good. Soggy French toast, smallest chicken on top of a gross smaller waffle. Service was awful and I'm sure it's because they get an AUTOMATIC 20% gratuity. Avoid this place.
Be the first to ReplyBrunch is amazing.
I had the blueberry pancakes. The very best ever. Bacon was topnotch also.
Be the first to ReplyI had heard many good things about this restaurant and it
I had heard many good things about this restaurant and it lived up to the hype! The food was tasty with many different options from curry to chicken parmesan to chicken pot pie poppers. The waiters were helpful and the hostesses were friendly. The interior is very fun with accent walls, colorful graffiti paintings, and modern chandeliers.

This place was really nice we had a reservation (a must in my opinion). The service was really good and the food came out quick. Come hungry because everything we had was delicious!

This restaurant received the Michelin award in 2021 and I can see why. Every entree was well thought out. The flavors were original and paired to perfection. The chicken & waffles - two crispy chicken strips with a cornbread waffle. The waffle had jalapeรฑos and light cheese. The habanero butter was a spicy treat, and Grama's gravy was a nice accompaniment.French toast - delish! Three brioche bread triangles topped with granola, cooked apples and vanilla bean ice cream. The combination of flavors created an apple pie flavor. Carribbean shrimp & grits - comfort food at its best! Cheesy grits, topped with 6 large shrimp, chicken sausage, plantains, peppers and a fried egg. Magnificent! Buttermilk pancakes - my personal favorite! Short stack of thick, fluffy pancakes, topped with lavender blueberry sauce and a dollop of vanilla mascarpone. While these were thick pancakes, they were so fluffy and soft. The taste surprised me; I was sure I wouldn't taste the lavender - I was wrong! The lavender flavor permeated my taste buds in the most wonderful way! The blueberry and lavender partnered well to make a balanced taste. The service was friendly, helpful and efficient. Our food came out fast! The ambience was normal, not too loud, perfect for a Sunday brunch.
Be the first to ReplyTop five worst pancakes in town.
Burger was over cooked and under-seasoned. The service was a good match for the forgettable food. The menu is eclectic, I'll give them that. But maybe try being a bit more conventional.
Be the first to ReplyI enjoyed the service and ambience.
The food was delicious and plates were gorgeous. I skipped the cocktails this time which is usually part of my review. They do start closing up the stations about an hour early so if you're coming to celebrate with a large party make a reservation and arrive early. Outdoor dining is also available in front.
Be the first to ReplyThe food is amazing! Excellent service.
Interesting cocktails. We started with the chicken pot pie poppers, which were fantastic. Had the fried and French dip pappardelle, which was so flavorful.
Be the first to ReplyI struggle between 4 and 5 stars but I only got blueberry
I struggle between 4 and 5 stars but I only got blueberry pancakes, so I feel like that's not enough to judge. The flavor profile was excellent. The mascarpone on top was magnificent. The blueberry lavender in the pancakes was very tasty. The pancakes were a little too crumbly, like it would crumble in my fork. Could be a one off. Can't wait to return. One thing though: it's slightly irritating when I'm eating and bussers are walking around waiting for my plate to be empty.... Like can I have some space? I don't like feeling like I have to protect my plate.

Went there for my birthday and the food was absolutely delicious! The sweet potato shakshuka with the naan is a must try ! It's unlike anything i have tried! It was absolutely delicious.Thr egg sandwhich was good too, specially the sauce inside the bun.The sunny side up dessert was a treat! The base is coconut panacotta, the yellow york is mangoe jelly and the bacon is shortbread, served with berries!A must try dessert there.
Be the first to ReplyI always enjoy the food when I come.
What I appreciate the most is the ambiance. It's super comfortable and inviting, yet high energy.
Be the first to ReplyWent here for a weekend dinner (we made reservations.
..definitely do so because it gets pretty packed) and it did not disappoint! True to the name, their dishes take more conventional foods and put a unique twist on them. We got the cornbread muffins with the jalapeรฑo honey butter as an appetizer and I am still thinking about it! The muffins were warm and crisp on the outside, fluffy on the inside and the butter was the perfect accompaniment. I had the vegan Mexi-Cali chili and it was so rich and flavorful...didn't miss the meat at all! Hubby had the shrimp and grits and loved it as well, just wished that portion was a little bigger. We had the raspberry cake for dessert and that was incredible as well...light and airy with fresh raspberries purรฉed in between the layers - yum! I left so full and happy :)
Be the first to ReplyMy partner and I came here on a Friday morning for brunch.
We had reservations, but the restaurant did look pretty seated. We ordered the shakshuka and the shrimp & grits, and the shakshuka was absolutely delicious. I highly recommend adding on naan to the shakshuka - it pairs so well with the creamy but chunky dip and the egg yolks! We also ordered a hawaiian punch -- it was good as well and mostly tasted like pineapple/passion fruit. This brunch spot is such a cute place for dates, big groups, families, etc, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a brunch/lunch spot in DC. I 100% be back in the future to try some of their sweeter dishes like their blueberry pancakes!

(Sorry if I misspelled? A+! Amazing food and very quick service too! Highly recommend. I suggest making a reservation ahead as this place is super busy on a Saturday.
Be the first to ReplyI came to Unconventional Diner just a couple of weeks ago
I came to Unconventional Diner just a couple of weeks ago and didn't think the experience could get any better but am happy to say that it did! This time, I came with a bigger group and had a really great meal. We were able to sample more items and felt that the items were worth the price, came out quickly, and were even better than my other visits. The staff was also very helpful and efficient, despite the large Sunday brunch crowds. Our group ordered the Buttermilk Pancakes, the Chicken and Waffles, the Brussels Sprouts and Fried Eggs with Shrimp, Corned Beef Hash, the Loaded Breakfast Biscuits. We also got a side of bacon and hash browns, both of which were perfectly cooked. Each of the items was a 5/5, though some were slightly better than others. The portion sizes were substantial and we were very satisfied by this meal. The pancakes deserve special mention; their fluffiness, blueberry topping, and lemony flavor are outstanding and some of the best pancakes I've had. The Brussels Sprouts are also excellent and each of the shrimps was perfectly cooked. The Chicken and Waffles was probably the weakest entree; the chicken pieces are just like chicken tenders, rather than freshly breaded and fried chicken. My companions ended the meal with coffees, which were probably the only item which was less than enjoyable owing to the strength of the coffee. The coffee was so strong that it bordered on burnt, which my companions did not appreciate. The busyness of the restaurant would make it seem like there would be difficulty getting the wait staffs attention, but this was not the case. The waiter was very attentive and our water glasses were constantly refilled. The interior is also lovely, and the different parts of the restaurant give it a decentralized feel, which we appreciated because that number of people in a more populated space would have felt more overwhelming. I will definitely be back and hope that the next experience is as good as this one.

Food was ok. Had chicken and waffles which was pretty bland. The people with me said the same about their food.

My few visits were wonderful and tasteful judging by my pictures. 3/19/2023 I order for delivery and it was a nightmare. Everything was disgusting and I wanted a full refund I spent $100 plus for some trash. I mean I was a loyal customer everything I had in the past in 2022 was the bomb and well worth the price. 2023 is a huge disappointment. I order shrimp n grits, German chocolate cake, chicken waffles, bacon, and kid's pancakes everything was no good. The high quality is gone.
