I love Uchi!! My first location was Denver and I've been to Denver, Miami and Houston now. The service is always great. There are some really amazing staples like the walu walu and karaage that are my fave. Love sitting at the sushi counter and letting the chef tell me everything. Great vibes.

Best sushi in Houston! The chefs are so talented and very friendly. I love all the choices the chef gave for omakase, but if you sit at the bar be careful--they kept feeding us just because we said we weren't full and the bill was crazy! But it was so yummy so no regrets The fried milk really surprised me, I'm not a deserts type person usually but it was so unique and delicious. My other favorites were the mushroom nigiri that was cooked so well it tasted like meat, and an off-the-menu octopus dish the chef gave us.

This place is INCREDIBLE! We travel to Houston often and this is always a staple for us. Some of the best (if not THE best) sushi we have had. We have sat in the dining room and the sushi bar, neither disappointed. We have tried several different menu items and often take recommendations from the servers or the sushi chefs. They are always amazing recommendations.

This is a high end restaurant, but I went during their social hour. The food is so good it is worth the cost. Everything is so beautifully crafted.

Be the first to ReplyUchi never misses.
I try something new each time I go and it never disappoints. The fried milk is my all time favorite dessert and I will not be sharing! Service is always exceptional, however, this most recent time, we sat at the sushi bar and our chef wasn't friendly nor attentive. However, the rest of the waitstaff was.

Service is always impeccable. The quality of food is top tier. And the Ambiance is very chill. We sat at sushi bar for the third or fourth time and we had Koi taking care of us. She is an absolute gem with an infectious personality.Incredible food, everything she gave us was a work of art. I didn't get the name of the guy working next to her with the long hair and tattoos but he was also really great.Hudson was our server and he was very attentive.Love this place. It's our go to "Treat yo self" spot. Birthday? Uchi. Anniversary? Uchi. Hump day? It's time for some uchi baby!Only downside is, this place is NOT cheap. But you have to pay to play!! Appreciate you guys always having such a high standard. I do miss the old uniforms though, the servers in the denim shirts looked slick.
Be the first to ReplyI manifested a bad experience.
Let me back up. Last year, I took my wife to uchi for her birthday. We had the best waitress and literally still talk about that meal to this day. My wife is soy/gluten free, but our waitress was so accommodating and helpful - we were blown away with how inventive the chefs were, with these restrictions.Fast forward to yesterday, I had a fear we couldn't recreate our first experience - and thus I might have manifested it. My wife insisted on going back for her bday, even though I gave her several new options. What broke this experience for us was the waiter. He was snarky, unhelpful and although knowing it was my wife's bday (since the host greeted us by wishing her a happy birthday), I had to remind him. We asked about the tempura because some restaurants have gluten-free flour, and he snarked,' it's fried.' like, no, we know that - we were just asking if there were alternatives. He seemed uninterested, and we felt rushed. He didn't take my order correctly, and put in for a chicken dish - which we would never order at a sushi restaurant, but he seemed bothered, so we accepted it. That was our fault. The family behind us said they liked California rolls, and their waiter kinda gave them attitude about that too.Look, there is so much on the menu, these guys should want to help educate their guests based on the guests preferences. Not make them feel stupid. I literally had to drag suggestions out of our waiter.Sucks to have such a crappy experience on a birthday, but I know next time I'll be pickier about who our server it. It's not like we're at Panda Express, although we might of had a better experience there last night, lol.
Be the first to ReplyThis was one of the most involved and enjoyable experiences
This was one of the most involved and enjoyable experiences I've had when it comes to sushi. Our waiter, John, was super knowledgeable and very helpful in navigating how to get the most out of our visit. We tried ~8-9 plates and 3 drinks. Overall, everything was super delicious, beautiful presentation, and honestly - the vegan nigiri (tomato) was our absolute favorite. I would definitely recommend being adventurous if you chose to come here. The ambiance was dimly lit with really great background music. I really enjoyed it, it would be really nice for a dinner date or even just bringing some friends for a cool experience. I'd love to try to Omakase next but this is a new favorite! 10/10 - highly recommend

Uchi is a culinary haven that continues to live up to its well-deserved reputation as one of the premier restaurants in Houston. As soon as you step inside, you are greeted by an inviting and energetic atmosphere that sets the tone for an exceptional dining experience. The attentive and kind service only adds to the warm and welcoming environment. The brussel sprouts were a revelation, a true symphony of flavors that danced on the palate. They were crispy, umami, and slightly salty, a perfect combination that elevated this humble vegetable to new heights. Even those who normally shy away from brussel sprouts will be won over by this culinary delight. The hama chilli was another standout dish that was both refreshing and satisfying. The hama was incredibly tender, and the diverse flavors in the dish blended together harmoniously, creating a delicious and memorable experience. While the wagyu steak may have been slightly overhyped, the theater of cooking it on the rock was certainly enjoyable. The steak itself was tender and savory, but the small serving size was a bit disappointing. Nonetheless, it was a tasty and well-prepared dish. The karaage was crispy and perfectly complemented by the umami and slightly acidic sauce. It was a perfect entree that showcased the chef's skills and expertise. My personal favorite was the hamachi nabe, a dish unlike anything I've ever tasted before. The richness of the eggyolk and mushrooms contrasted beautifully with the lightness of the rice and fish, creating a perfect balance of flavors and textures. The desserts were also unforgettable, with the jasmine cream being the standout dish. The contrasting layers of texture, flavors, and tartness were a true delight for the senses, and it was the perfect way to cleanse the palate after a satisfying meal.Overall, Uchi is a must-visit restaurant in Houston that continues to exceed expectations. The food is exceptional, the service is attentive, and the ambiance is warm and inviting. It's no wonder why this restaurant has garnered so many rave reviews - it truly is a culinary gem in the city.

Be the first to ReplyThere's not much I can say about Uchi that hasn't already
There's not much I can say about Uchi that hasn't already been said. -Make reservations and inform them of any allergies and preferences - they are very accommodating-Large groups can customize the omakase on price and dish request-Small groups, sit at the bar for the best experience-Parking is awful, add a few minutes to your travel timeWhen I went, it was $141 per person for omakase, 13 courses. Some of the best and unique food we've ever had. Foie gras was the pinnacle of the meal, but even the simple nigiri was elevated to another level. Staff were phenomenal about explaining each dish and the best way to eat it.My 2022 Omakase tier list with 1 as high and 13 as low, and quick tasting notes on each:1 - Foie Gras Nigiri - Foie Gras (Duck Liver) on Rice2 - Loup De Mer Nigiri - Mediterranean Sea Bass on Rice3 - Wagyu Tartare - Australian Sumac tomatoes, Vinaigrette, smoked trout roe, wagyu4 - Tako - Octopus with wasabi and cucumber, and some kind of garnish5 - Saku Crudo - Salmon with strawberry and butter, Thai basil, lemon (Some people in my group rated this more highly)6 - Hirame Usuzukuri - Flounder with lime zest, candied quinoa, daikon radishes?7 - Masu Nigiri - Masu Trout on Rice8 - Gyutoro Nigiri - 72 Hour Short Rib on Rice9 - Bluefin Toro Tartare - Fatty Tuna with Caviar?10 - Kanpachi Nigiri - Amberjack on Rice11 - Kinoko Nabe - Mushroom Rice with Egg Stirred - Served sizzling12 - Fried Milk & Ice Cream - Fried condensed milk with a chocolate ganache and ice cream13 - Akami Te - Bluefin tuna with compressed watermelon, with a trinity herb puree and fish sauce with a thai chili kick
Be the first to ReplyThis is my absolute favorite restaurant in Houston.
Any time my girlfriend and I have anything worth celebrating, we make a reservation here. It's a elegant yet comfortable experience that always leaves a smile. The food is always top notch. I love how the plates aren't huge, as this allows me to get a many different options. Every time I go I always try to get something new, and I have yet to find something that I wouldn't get again. The one dish I make sure to get every single time is the hamachili. The best execution of the spicy-yellowtail-yuzu dish I've ever had. What makes this our favorite restaurant is the service. Hudson is hands down the best waiter I have ever had. However, every single waiter we have had has been outstanding. My girlfriend has some specific dietary restrictions, and the waiters have always been able to walk her through the menu and tell us what she can eat. I plan on returning as often as I can!

Absolutely delicious! Just be aware they don't serve cocktails here, just wine and champagne! Very good date night spot
Be the first to ReplyI came here for my birthday with a small group.
We weren't quite sure what we wanted since it was everyone's first time. Our server went above and beyond with making suggestions and bringing out surprise dishes to try. We loved everything she recommended! Uchi is definitely an experience! Don't skip the dessert.
Be the first to ReplyI give this restaurant 3 stars because I can't give 2.
5, but the overall experience was not ideal for our occasion. We try to knock out 2-3 restaurants of local import for our wedding anniversaries and we decided on Uchi to start off our celebration. I'm so glad we did because it was NOT a showstopper for us. Service - The service was good. We were greeted upon entry and congratulated on our anniversary, which was nice, though usual. Our table was ready about 5 minutes after our reservation time, so no long wait. We were able to sit in a nice patio location and have our first drinks. The waitress seemed confused our transferring the drink bill to our table bill once seated. Transferring the drink bill is not uncommon, so the confusion was odd.Ambience & Style - It was loud. If you're a couple or group of friends who enjoy deep discussion at normal speaking volumes across a 30~" wide table (we had a booth), then this is NOT the restaurant for you. The overall style, in our location, was warm wood, bold wallpaper, and white-ish leather cushioned booths. The visual aesthetic was nice, but the booth to table top height is not ideal for people with longer legs. As tall people we felt cramped in a rather large booth (neither of us would be considered large people concerning girth).Food - Everything tasted fresh, though sometimes weird. Understandably the restaurant is fusion, so once that was clear we understood some ingredient combinations might be unusual. Having traveled through Japan and eaten both very traditional and authentic Sushi, fusion sushi, and hole in the wall Izakaya sushi, we expected to be wowed based on the reviews. We were not. We intended to go all in and order items slowly throughout the night, but after getting almost inedible salty shrimp and then karaage with an acidity level that reminded us too much of vinegar or bile, we stopped ordering. The only things we truly enjoyed was the Hot Rock Wagyu and the Zero Sen. The bluefin was not the best we've had. They don't provide usual sushi dressings because they preseason. We did not taste much flavor. Aioli was offered as a dipping sauce for one of the roles, which really didn't hit the taste bud spot - at all. Price - Not high at all. For this event we were planning on spending $500 and the bill didn't break $200. Kuu ( a more traditional styled sushi restaurant) felt more expensive for their offerings. Though we appreciated the food at Kuu more. Final Thoughts - If the place wasn't so loud and we could have enjoyed each other's company more (actually hearing each other), then maybe the food would have tasted better because of improved mood. We didn't see anything about volume level in reviews, but now we know. Maybe we'll try it again on a regular day. Service was what is to be expected at a restaurant of their level.

Be the first to ReplyEveryone I knew recommended Uchi for their favorite sushi
Everyone I knew recommended Uchi for their favorite sushi place in Houston, so I knew I had to check it out. My boyfriend and I came for his birthday as a special occasion. The vibe here was modern Japanese, and it had a large venue with plenty of seating. We started off with drinks during happy hour, and I enjoyed the freshness of the Kara Kyuri. We opted to do 1 signature tasting Omakase and we added o-toro and chu-toro, as we usually try to do at sushi restaurants to get a baseline feel of the sushi quality. The signature tasting had really unique dishes that were beautifully put together with contrasting ingredients. The restaurant even gave us a complimentary dish. Our favorite of the 6 dishes were the nigiri, but we enjoyed the fusion dishes of the Hama chili, walu walu. If I had an option to do it again, I'd probably opt for the raw preference just out of personal taste. The only reason we were disappointed was actually the toro. 1 piece of o-toro was $16 and 1 piece of chu toro was $18. At that price tag, we expected really high quality toro, and were disappointed that especially the most expensive dish we bought - the chu toro - was fishy and not fresh. Despite the subpar quality of the toro, we still enjoyed our time here. We paid around $250 including taxes. Our thoughts overall - the Omakase here is not the traditional type where you sit around the chef, and the chef makes adjustments based on your reactions; instead it seemed more like a pre-fixe menu. I would say uchi is a great Japanese American sushi fusion place with high quality fusion dishes. However, if you're looking for a more traditional Omakase, this is not the place.
