Terrible Experience
John their manager was absolutely disgusting to me. I was already having a rough day with my grandmother in the hospital and having a disability. He mocked me and treated me super poorly. I will never dine here again, this was one of my favorite restaurants in Austin. I always come here and it was always a pleasant experience, but not with him. AWFUL EXPERIENCE. He asked me in front of EVERYONE why I did not tip, after he treated me poorly. This man. Wow. You ruined an iconic place for me in Austin.
Be the first to ReplyUchi Austin is a culinary masterpiece that beautifully celebrates Japanese cuisine and innovative flavors
Dining at Uchi Austin was a culinary journey into the art of Japanese cuisine and innovative flavors. The restaurant’s modern and inviting ambiance set the stage for an exceptional meal. The menu was a fusion of traditional Japanese dishes with a creative twist, showcasing the freshness of ingredients and unique combinations. The tasting menu was an exploration of textures and flavors, leaving a lasting impression. The staff’s knowledge of the menu and their dedication to culinary excellence made the dining experience truly extraordinary. Pairing the dishes with sake and Japanese whiskey from the extensive list added to the overall delight. Uchi Austin is not just a restaurant; it’s a celebration of culinary artistry and a must-visit for anyone seeking an exceptional dining experience in Austin.

It’s a little on the fancy side and slightly elevated in price, but the value for cost is amazing. Delicious and unique dishes along with a nice ambiance make it superb for both a casual dinner with friends or a meal for a special occasion.
Be the first to ReplyA Fantastic Surprise
I’ve heard great things about this place but I was not so sold initially. I love Japanese cuisine and seeing other Asian ingredients/style and dishes on the menu was a little unsettling. I tend to be a purist, you see but I decided to give it a try anyway. It did not disappoint. They have an extensive food and drink menu but I mostly ordered sushi plus their scallop crudo and the walu-walu. Everything was terrific but the walu-walu was a standout! It’s on the pricey side but very well worth it.

This place was such an amazing experience - they completely deserve the Michelin star they got. The place has an awesome vibe - no one seems stuck up even though this is a fancy upscale place. The service was great. Our server, Nicholas, was very professional and knowledgeable. They explained every dish that was brought to our table and let me tell you - the food itself is such a phenomenal experience. Every dish was done to its own character - nothing was boring or overrated. Definitely worth a visit to experience something so different. Prices are up there but then again, you are paying for freshness. Quality. And delicious.
Be the first to ReplyReally overpriced, not that good
Very very very overpriced for very small portions, and not that good. Very tiny pieces of salmon with a cucumber, not any better than HEB sushi, but triple the price and half the size with real long wait times. The waiter was nice though.
Be the first to ReplyBest sushi ever!
Our visit to Uchi was exceptional. We arrived at 4 when they opened and soon the place was full. Our waitress, Chloe, although 'in training', was very knowledgeable about the menu and encouraged us to try new things to share. We each ordered something different and were so pleased with our choices. The Walu Walu and Suzuki Yaki were fantastic. These two hot fish dishes featured escolar and brazino cooked perfectly. Reservations are a must and eating here should not be ignored!

This restaurant is very good, especially with the sushi, which is a delight for the palate and there is nothing the same or similar to this magnificent and glorious flavor.
Be the first to ReplyAmaing, but expensive
We ate on the patio. By a busy road , so it is noisy. Valet parking offered. Very innovative fusion Japanese dishes. The fatty tuna was like butter. Hama Chili a highlight but WAY over-priced for the amount you get. Four of us ate and the bill was over 300.00 and we left a little hungry. Great quality , great service, just be prepared for the bill

Over the top great food and service . Top quality was evident with every bite. Everything we had was great . A must visit if you are in Austin .
Be the first to ReplyMust Visit Restaurant if you're visiting Austin....
When we come to Austin, Uchi is a must! They serve some of the most innovative fusion Japanese restaurants in the United States. If you can get a reservation, "GO"...."GO NOW". My wife and I came with three of our adult children. When we sat at our table, the server, Omar, immediately said, "I remember you guys from last year. You ordered the vegetarian tasting menu." Not surprisingly, we were pretty shocked. As our adult children have different dietary preferences, we assured Omar that we would be ordering off of the regular menu. We ordered half of the menu. One thing was better than the next. There was nothing that we didn't love. Uchi is a really special restaurant. They've been innovating for many years and they have a very loyal following.....and we know why. If you have the opportunity to try it, don't miss it. You'll love it too.

I got to Uchi every few months. Hands down the best restaurant in Austin. We eat so much food but never leave feeling like we’ve eaten too much. Neither my wife or I eat fish, except at Uchi because it’s that good. And the 72 hour short rib is like butter melting in your mouth.

Wow. This restaurant is amazing. So many delicious menu items that are out if this world. Do yourself a favor and please try this establishment out.
Be the first to ReplyStill Fabulous After All These Years
Doesn't get much better than this - anywhere in the world. Each dish is superb. The way that they pair fresh fish with fresh fruit remains innovative, original, and delicious. By now, I've tried just about everything on their menu, and nothing has been disappointing. Service is friendly and knowledgeable. Prices are high, but well worth it.

I finally had the opportunity to try the famed Uchi and the short is it was okay. Coming from Southern California and having been all over Japan, I can say this is not as good as I've heard. They do have some good signature dishes, but for general overall great sushi... this is not the place. Difficult to get reservations, we just came at opening and fortunately they were able to seat us at the sushi bar. They are very friendly/attentive... a bit intrusive. It was nice how three different people introduced themselves and tried to go over the menu with us, but honestly, maybe back off a bit. Give us a chance to take in the ambiance. It feels very mechanical and aside from the sushi chef, the rest of the staff seriously lacks any authenticity. Everyone who came by just kept interrupting our conversation. To the wait staff... learn to be more subtle and read your guests. We started off with some simple nigiri - salmon, yellowtail and tuna. I feel this is the surest way to determine if the rest of the food will be good. The sushi was good... but not great. Most definitely not good enough to warrant the exorbitant prices. And have had sushi literally all over the world, I can't ever say I have had tuna nigiri with garlic. Not a good combination. The garlic completely killed the taste of the tuna. We did try the "Hot Rock" wagyu beef, "Hama Chili" yellowtail with thai chili and orange supreme as well as the "Hirame Usuzukuri" founder with candied quinoa. All were quite good. To finish the evening out, we had the "Honey Toast", a brioche, cashew praline with ice cream and the Jasmine Swiss Roll. Okay, simply skip the honey toast. It might look good, but there is nothing special about it. Far too salty. The Jasmine Swiss Roll was good. Overall, it was an interesting experience but not one I would repeat. First and foremost, inexcusably expensive. I've been to some very fine sushi restaurants with amazing fresh fish for half the price. And for the hoovering staff who couldn't seem to give us five minutes of peace and when they are bothering you, it's incredibly disingenuous. The sushi chef was amazing. He never said anything to us, but the moment I would look up to him to ask something, he was available. Otherwise, he just left us alone. Too bad the rest of the staff couldn't be that way. My server must have asked me five times if I wanted more beer even after I told him I didn't want any more. I feel "Uchi" is more like the story of the emperor's new clothes. Everyone wants to say it's good because everyone else raves about it. But it's simply okay at best. I have been to other sushi restaurants in Austin that are phenomenal so I know there is exceptional sushi in Austin... just not here.
Be the first to ReplyFirst class-every bite better than the last!
We had an amazing evening at Uchi celebrating my husband's birthday! Even though we could only get a late reservation time the staff worked so hard while we waited to be sure we were updated on our table's status, brought by tasting bites and were so polite-great service. And the dinner was top-notch, each bite was better than the last! A perfect chorus of flavor that created excitement at the table as each course came! Can't recommend enough!

We got a res when they opened at 4:00 and coming during the hair hour time ended up being perfect. Got ton try a wonderful mix of sushi and fusion dishes that were exceptional

Plan ahead to dine here ..it’s popular and most of the time 8:30 pm or later on a Monday night is all you will find . It’s one of those places that calls emails and texts you 14 times to confirm you are coming because they can sell your table 5 times over if you no show. ? I don’t know why they places do this..it’s a pet peeve. You can walk in for the sushi bar but we have heard it can be 2 hour wait? Who does that? Anyway.
Valet wasn’t good, slow , unorganized , unclear where to go and I was afraid we would be hit from the traffic on Lamar whole time we waited . See valet at odd duck..they do quite an amazing job there . Table wasn’t ready when we arrived after the 14 reminders..another pet peeve.. so we were asked to sit in wine bar.. it’s the corner of the sushi bar-cute area. No drink to be had..too busy, we were ignored. Finally someone came for us but we were ignored again for 15-20
Min so I had to flag down someone for water and a waiter . Once we got our waiter ..things started to improve.. the uchi salad was so interesting..eat w your hands daikon radish wrapped wonder-excellent. King crab was wonderfully done, hot stone w wagu beef at table was fun to cook
Yourself and delish, Tuna sushi was about the only thing we had that was remotely something you know from reg sushi place but it was still original flavors w its own sauce. The deep sea trout presented like salmon but tasted mild and wonderful, we had a chili something wonderful. They were out of the cilantro chicken. We also tried a brioche toast desert w cashews , honey and praline which was divine. We were in and out in an hour despite some long lags to be seated and originally discovered and another decent lag for desert. We are not late night Monday night diners ..we had called to try and come earlier.. nope..so we wanted to keep it moving and go home. Food here was 10
In my opinion…and I liked how quickly and constantly food ordered would show up at the table with an nice description of each item and suggested way to eat( fish on tongue , while hot, with fruit) service solid 3…ambiance,wait, parking needed work. Loro is a favorite of ours ..easy to see how the collaboration yields such wonderful
Food creations. Love to come again or go to uchicko but it’s a commitment and I will need an AARP time :)
Delicious
Totally deserves the hype. Food is excellent as is the service. Great for a large group to do the tasting menu together to try a little bit of all the best dishes. It’s more interactive that way and fun! Some of the items melted in your mouth leaving you wondering how the next dish would outdo the previous. It is a tiny restaurant with tables close together and it is loud.
Be the first to ReplyMagical all around!
Went with good friends and we all agreed it was a “magical” evening with outstanding food AND service! We asked our wonderful waiter Omar to bring out his (and the chef’s) favorites. We had a delightful experience and look forward to our next visit.
Be the first to ReplyUchi still does not disappoint
One of the best restaurants, hands down, in the world. I cannot imagine anyone being disappointed with Uchi. Unhesitatingly recommend, and they are doing well even through COVID. I had my concerns, as they (what I've heard and fits the freshness) receive much of their product fresh shipped in from Japan. Last time we went was just like the first!
Be the first to ReplyCould be my favorite restaurant....ever.
Uchi was one of three recommended restaurants in the city for us to try during our short visit to Austin. Try as I might I couldn't get a reservation on short notice on Open Table. When I called and spoke with the hostess she recommended coming in close to 4PM during their happy hour. The food was insanely delicious. Jenny, our server, was patient and helpful with our selections. Please include Uchi on
your must-do-Austin list.
Not What used to be /was.
Sorry Uchi your restaurant has gotten really bad . My wife and i life to take a the romantic trip to Austin Tex get a Hotel and grab suposedly some of the best sushi in Texas.WRONG . Service ? BAD . The they waiter David could not care for us at the least. Almost like he was doing drugs without the giggles. Was like please dont ask me anything, PLEASE. LOL. But man we spent over $400 BUCKs and got 10.00 worth of respect. WILL NOT GO BACK UNLESS hear from the pope that this place has changed its ways. I just like the owners story and where he studied.
