Bone marrow taco was good but not worth it for the price.
I would highly recommend getting a torta as well! Overall everything including the hot sauces was perfection.

The best thing was the chili oil they provide for the tacos, but unfortunately it's mostly oil. The birria doesn't have much flavor. It felt pricey for what I got.
Be the first to ReplyTried out this little hidden gem.
Food was so good. We had the quesa birria soft and crunchy tacos. Totally would love to try their cocktails next. Everything in my opinion the price you pay for the food is good. They don't seem to skimp out on filling for tacos and Tortillas look to be home made.
Be the first to ReplyPlease do not eat here.
First of all the bone marrow option which is almost $8 comes with an actual bone and very little marrow comes out. Very overpriced. Tacos are birria and very soggy. Quality of meat is very bad. Tourist trap and never coming back here again! Please do yourself a favor and avoid this scam of a restaurant.
Be the first to ReplyTo say I'm dissatisfied, it's an understatement.
This is the second time around and the last. First time my taco was extremely SALTY. This time i paid for beans and none of my tacos had beans, the handmade tortilla was ridiculously dry...Never coming back again. DO NOT RECOMMEND

So good! I can have this everyday! I love the ramen and of course the Tuetano!!! It's right in old town many shops around. Seating is a bit scarce.
Be the first to ReplyThe flavor of the tacos isn't bad but the side of beans
The flavor of the tacos isn't bad but the side of beans were pretty fire. The quesabirria tacos are a little too greasy for my liking but I know birria can be like that sometimes so can't knock them for that. The tacos are also small so if value is important to you, this ain't it. SKIP the TEUTANO bone. I should have listened to other reviewers on here. Forget that the bone is 7 dollars on its own, this place has little to no quality control. My bone had no marrow, at all. You would expect that a place with Tuetano in the name would make sure you get tuetano. I didn't bother with bringing it up to the staff as I'm sure they already know and are clearly okay with the quality of their product. Plus, the restaurant's responses to reviews below complaining about the nonexistent marrow is to blame the product and dismiss people. The service is very impersonal. The only individual we saw was the bartender. There are two windows, one for ordering drinks and one for ordering food. You also have to pay separately. They have different names so it can be confusing. Thought it was two separate businesses in a food hall until we saw our bartender going back and forth. You order food at a self checkout kiosk and they text you when your order's ready. Not the worst system in the world but the kiosk does prompt for a tip which I thought was weird since we didn't interact with anyone to get our food. The ambiance is okay. You get to look out onto congress street and watch cars drive by. They didn't have music when we were there but the plus is that I was able to hear my partner while having a conversation. In short, this place has okay birria items. Not great but not horrible. However, their so called specialty, tuetano, isn't very special. Since tuetano isn't it here I'll have to skip on this place in the future and just visit one of the many good birria places in San Diego instead.
Be the first to ReplyThe food looks really good BUT.
.. I don't think we'll be coming back. We ordered a few tacos and their infamous Bone Marrow taco, and I remember the BM taco being quite pricey, and for the price... it was filled with oil & there was barely any meat around or in the bone! And not only was the BM primarily bone... but the other tacos were just dripping in oil & grease. We ended up not finishing the tacos and left feeling pretty unsatisfied I later went to Yelp to see if we just had bad luck, but found that other customers felt similarly about their food. It's a no for us :(
Be the first to ReplyTrendy spot.
Went to Tuetano because i saw it om Driver's, drive in and Dives TV Show. Overrated. Very greasy and lacked flavor even after adding the bone marrow. Took 35 mins for 1 taco. Not crowded. Just waiting.
Be the first to ReplyDid a quick weekend get away to SD with the Mr.
We saw this ad on our IG and quickly became our must try. When we arrive their internet was down, and serive took longer than expected. HOWEVER, the wait was soooo worth it! We got the birria ta I with bone marrow and it hit the spot! It's a cute indoor/ outdoor patio style seating, mostly self service. If you are headed to SD must stop at old town and eat at Tuetano!!!!

Awesome service delicious tacos never had a taco with the bone marrow on top. This was by far very impressive. I will return with all my friends and family plenty seated by the way they also have a nice selection of cold beer on draft.

I can't wait to try this spot again!!!! It was delicious!!!!! I can't stop thinking on how good this was! Everything about this was just so good! Everything is perfect here!

It's just the best taco I've ever eaten! Now I don't have to drive to TJ to get my tacos. It's just so so good. The flavor is amazing.

The carne asada taco was sooo delicious but the birria taco was so disgusting. The meat had no flavor with a weird taste. I had one bite and threw the rest away.
Be the first to ReplyWe have wanted to try this place.
We finally made our way in today, and unfortunately, our experience was not good. We ordered a quesa birria taco; it was the same size as a regular taco. I was surprised since I placed the order while pointing to what I wanted and thought I was ordering; I now know what I wanted was it is their "quesadilla," a whole tortilla folded over. For the price, this size made sense, and since no one corrected me while ordering, you can imagine my surprise when we each got a small taco. We did order the Tuetano on the side. Man, the mess and work for little to no "bone butter" was such a disappointment. It would improve the experience and cost if these were split in half as you receive at other restaurants. Especially when being served in cardboard boats, the amount of grease you collect in these boats soaks through. We did not enjoy our food while the dry birria was swimming in a boat of grease with the dry tortilla, even with it being dipped in the consume. We also ordered the birria with tortillas, and the soy sauce, or this non-traditional flavor, was overpowering, and the meat was so dry. Also, ordereda the guac thinking it would come with chips...no it does not. We had a $13 bowl of guac and three tostadas shells. For this experience, we spent over $100. Oh almost forgot to mention the flavorless, soggy fish tacos. Big tacos but they are horrible. Sorry, no pictures of our experience. We would not recommend this place.

The wait was very long, the birria was salty and is very expensive for the size of the tacos.Arrachera tacos were very good.
Be the first to ReplyWe weren't into the bone marrow, but the Birria and steak
We weren't into the bone marrow, but the Birria and steak tacos were so good, and the torta was also one of the best I've had. It's tricky to find (around the left when you enter the deck area), but the front restaurant is associated with them and serves great drinks and seafood items. They have lots of covered outdoor seating and the staff is friendly. Check out our Reel on San Diego Foodgasm for more!

Rarely do I wander around and pick somewhere to eat without doing research... but we saw lines out of this place and decided to try it out. WOW. The food is incredible. It's been days but I'm still thinking about these tacos.

So I had super duper high expectations for this place since I've been searching for a bone marrow taco spot. Sorry to disappoint you but it really wasn't impressive. The tacos are good nonetheless but if you're excited about the bone barrow it's not worth it. Then again I read this in the comments before coming and still decided to try it for myself lol, their drinks are decent as well, would I come again if I'm in town, probably no.

Nothing I can say will truly articulate how delicious the food was here. I will think about these tacos at work...at home on a Friday night...in my dreams. That's how amazing they were. Our group came here as part of the Tacos, Tequilas, and Tombstones tour (excellent tour, by the way). This place is pretty tucked away, and because we aren't local, I'm not sure we would have known about it or visited unless we had done the tour. The universe blessed us by guiding us toward this taco oasis. We learned that the owner is a Michelin-honored chef and it shows in the food. She was able to take a classic food and make it outstanding without it being fussy or deconstructed or any other thing that ruins a staple like tacos. The birria tacos here are everything you want them to be: flavorful, tender, juicy. You don't get a consomé with it, but it did come with a hot sauce. They warned us about the heat level and it is spicy, but it is worth it to add even just a few drops on the tacos because it takes it up a notch. Our whole group was licking our fingers and saying how we were already mourning the end of our meal. I would recommend getting a margarita here too because not only are they the perfect compliment to the tacos, but they also make a truly solid drink here. I wish I could give this place 10 stars. Well worth it whether you're just passing through or live in the area.

Wow! The tacos here are amazing! My wife and I had the Birria Tuetano with juicy beef, cilantro, onions, a house made sauce that had a crackling spicy kick and a roasted marrow bone filled with bone marrow on a corn tortilla. You're given a stick to scoop out the rich and rich tasting marrow and put it onto the taco as the ultimate topping. The taste is out of this world! We also had the Birria with cheese on a handmade tortilla. Also, a great tasting taco! Two tacos each and we were stuffed. The restaurant has an outdoor seating area which is very pleasant. It's in Old Town San Diego. The staff are super friendly and down to earth. These tacos are world class!
Be the first to ReplyThe birria tacos are soooo delicious.
They are pricey at $6 each, but we'll worth it. The tortilla is nice and crisp and the filling is saucy, savory and delectable. We splurged on the bone marrow taco ($11) and I really didn't understand the hype. It does make a nice Instagram photo

I finally got the opportunity to try their new location in Old Town San Diego. Back then, they were down by the border so it was a journey just getting there but the birria tacos with bone marrow was so worth it. They offer pretty much the same things and to compare, I just ordered a birria taco with a side of bone marrow. The taco comes out sitting in a little pool of the birria soup so get some napkins ready. Although the bone looks really big, I didn't get as much marrow as I'd like. You get a little wooden stick to dig everything out. Everything was still just as good though! A really delicious taco made even better with the fattiness and richness of the bone marrow. The only reason this review isn't five stars is because of how expensive it is. We compared the last time we ordered in San Ysidro vs. now and it's almost double the price. I wouldn't say it's not worth it...just that I wish it was cheaper like before. I guess that's the trade-off for moving to a more central location.

Delicious Burris and cheese tacos but the consommé wasn't included (it should always be included) and cost $10! There was a little bit of meat in the consommé but it wasn't ten dollar's worth. Stick to the tacos, skip the $10 consommé. Order and pay first, then find a seat. They'll buzz you to pick up your food.
