Pretentious with very little choice and expensive to boot!
The inn has a lovely atmosphere but the menu is so disappointing. There’s very little choice and anything mildly interesting is so expensive. There’s a 12% service charge’ to allow them to pay the staff fairly’ . Bizarre. We won’t be returning, service was a bit hit and miss with food appearing in dribs and drabs but staff are very smiley.
Be the first to ReplyHuge disappointment, never again.
We booked lunch for six of us meeting up as a family group. The menu were disappointing and somewhat pretentious but we made the best of it. The food was average at best, the fish and chips were over cooked, the Pork was tiny and overcooked. At an average of £35 per head they then charged a service charge with no notice at all. Once and once only, there are some good places this area that will show this place for what it is, a rip off.

Been coming here for years as have family in mells, did used to be a nice pub. Went in today and it was just a chaotic experience, we couldn’t wait to get out. Too many people not enough room. Just felt really uncomfortable. Way too much hassle and bustle while trying to have a quiet drink! Has become very middle class now, so if that’s your thing then great! You’ll love it.

We had booked a table at The Talbot for a pre Christmas get together with family and friends as have had great food here before. Unfortunately on this occasion the food and atmosphere was below par. A few of us ordered the fish and chips which was 90% batter and 10% fish.It was extremely poor and tasted like it came out of a supermarket freezer rather than be cooked in an upmarket establishment. We would of sent it back but as our hosts were paying we didn’t want to embarrass them. Even though the dining room was far from busy tables beside us were left dirty with empty glasses on them and the waitresses didn’t seem on good form which reflected in the mood of the establishment. It was a really disappointing and embarrassing experience after convincing our hosts to book there after previously having great food there. Maybe it was just a bad day.
Be the first to ReplyUtterly SUPERB! Couldn't fault a thing!
Well there is no other word that comes to mind to describe this place and give it justice - UTTERLY SUPERB!!! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 I booked for my birthday dinner with family and dog. The welcome was great. Water bowl provided without even asking. A glass to celebrate my birthday. Wine was terrific, such a great wine menu on offer. Food is fantastic!! Best I've had in years!! Venison fillet and 10oz steaks were superb!! All reasonably priced and fantastic value for money with amazing quality. Cheese and biscuits are a must! Their homemade biscuits are out of this world. The staff were very friendly. My birthday night was made extremely memorable and special. I honestly don't know how anyone can leave a bad review here. You need to book to dine. I recommend without any hesitation. Check Google reviews for a far better representation of these guys ambition and achievements. Trip Advisor reviewers here seem to be far too harsh on this establishment. This place has a great vibe, great history and unique and efficient team of staff. They should be very proud of themselves!! We will be back!!! 🌟

Crossing the country we decided to spend a night at The Talbot Inn and what a true gem it turned out to be. From the well laid out and comfortable room, to the pint in the pub, an excellent meal in the restaurant, not to mention an enticing breakfast the following morning with a Bloody Mary tray service to pick us up. On top of that the most kind and hospitable staff and some of the best room amenities I have experienced in a long time. The latter turned out to be their own development (Bramley) in a perfect combination of high quality and a number of sustainable efforts. I cannot recommend this place enough. It is romantic, authentic, honest and genuine - exactly how a hotel stay should always be like.
Be the first to ReplyThe good, the bad and the ugly!
We had an overnight stay and dinning experience at the Talbot that fell well below expectations. THE GOOD - the bedroom was very comfortable, well equipped and pleasantly furnished, though severely lacking in clothes storage. The bathroom comprised wash basin, w.c. and shower over bath. Quality fittings. THE BAD - The menu was a disappointment in the limited choices and lack of imaginative dishes that are often found in country inns of quality. The choices include battered fish and chips, burgers, sea bass with chorizo based sauce from which the chorizo had escaped! The steak chosen was of decent quality. Starters are similarly lacking. Though the celeriac soup was very good, THE UGLY - quite a few of the dining tables have declined past the shabby chic stage. The tables in the main dining area generally were poorly laid out, a hotch potch of an arrangement. An upgrade to shabby chic would be welcome rather than just plain tatty. A separate dining area, across the cobbled courtyard, called the "Sitting Room" was quite pleasant. In another annexe, an old barn, there is the "Grill room" with an open fire. Service was good, though at an imposed price - 12.5%!! The pub aspects of the inn are atmospheric with a flagstone bar area, good beer and cheery relaxed mood shared between staff and drinkers. A good place to enjoy a pint. It should be noted that the bedrooms are accessed by a short uneven stone staircase outside from the uneven cobbled courtyard, Beware if tall; there are low beams throughout. The Talbot is a lovely old country inn unaltered in many decades, so may that continue. But the dining experience needs to addressed. A menu to meet 2022 quality inn standards and subtle improvements, upgrades, in the dining furnishings. Overall a disappointing experience given the Talbot's standing.
Be the first to Reply6 stars at least!
Utterly wonderful lunch in every way. Even proper napkins. I had a double serving of Scotch eggs in black pudding. Such a clever thing for a chef to achieve. Glad I chose 2 starters. I am not a good enough writer to do the rest of the food justice. But the panacotta was bliss ful. You simply have to visit to see that I think 6 stars would be warranted.
Be the first to ReplyTalbot Inn evening meal
Myself and a friend came here for an evening meal. The place was really busy, I would say every table was taken. The staff were fabulous with service throughout. My friend had the steak, while I had the boeuf bourguignon, although both meals were lovely I did find the meat didn’t fall apart and was a little chewy. Looking around at other starters, mains and desserts other were having they all looked fabulous too. Lovely place that I shall return back to very soon.
Be the first to ReplyNice place, pleasant food.
Lovely place. Lovely staff. Good and friendly service. Nice atmosphere.
Average food.
OK olives. Very good steak tartar. Pleasant mussels. Fair charcuterie plate. OK pannacotta.
Excellent wine.
Not a lot more that I can say.
£110 for 2.
😇
Fab food and perfect venue for large family gathering
Fabulous food and fabulous service for a large multigenerational family birthday. My only marginally negative comment is that we were in the grill house and were advised that we needed to give our table back by 2pm- which wasn’t a problem. The family getting the table after us came into the area and sort of took over. It’s a shared space, so they are perfectly entitled to do so, but it did feel a big like we were being thrown out- when we could equally have stayed on the sofas after.
Be the first to ReplySunday lunch at The Talbot
Went to The Talbot for Sunday lunchL. Lovely setting - charming cobbled courtyard and cosy interior. Staff very friendly and accommodating. Just needed the odd nudge to remind them to bring things we ordered. Sunday lunch very generous size. The beef, potatoes and Yorkshire pudding were a little overdone, but that didn't seem to matter because as a whole it was as very enjoyable experience and we will return again
Be the first to ReplyBusy destination pub in a charming village ....
...but 5 of our table of 8 ordered the roasts (beef and chicken) despite the warning from the very honest waitress that the beef had been slightly over-cooked so it wasn't rare but when the roasts arrived they were all cold meat and the wide selection of vegetables!! I appreciate life is difficult for all at present but it should be possible to serve food warm if not hot!!
Be the first to ReplyBeautiful birthday meal
Perfect service from start to finish. We ordered 2 glasses of prosecco on arrival (partner's birthday) and the waitress immediately said these are on us! What a lovely gesture! We had the turkey which was delicious and port with stilton to follow. Could not fault the food or service. Wonderful for a birthday celebration. We will be back!
Be the first to ReplyAs Good as Ever: Our First Visit Since Covid
The Talbot has certainly not lost its touch and offers excellent, interesting and great value food. My wife had some of the best fish and chips she's ever had and my fish platter of squid, warm smoked salmon and crab on toast offered a delightful combination of fishy flavours. Both meals came with fantastic homemade tartar sauce. Two generous glasses of the house Prosecco provided ideal accompaniments to the food. We ate in the 'snug' which I would recommend but all parts of the pub have great charm.

Do not stay at this Inn if you want peace and quiet.
There is noise late into the night with people leaving the pub and loud music …and nobody warned on booking that the ground floor rooms are especially loud.
The room was tired , the carpet dirty and could really do with a re-furnishment, especially for such a high price. It was also dusty which in Covid times is not acceptable .
We have stayed in places all over the world including many lovely inns and this is poor . On complaining no kind of compensation was offered .
Superb. Don't miss it.
On a short break to Somerset, our lovely taxi driver Gareth recommended the Talbot and we were able to book a table for the following night. What a charming place. Lovely cobbled courtyard, lively (and busy) bar area and several attractive dining rooms. We ate Scallops followed by a very good sirloin with all the trimmings, the perfect evening rounded off with pineapple and chilli carpaccio and a wobbly panacotta. Thanks to Gareth being available for a second evening's driving (Bruton and MendipTaxis), several beers and glasses of wine were downed with enjoyment. Great service from start to finish from all involved.
Be the first to ReplySuperb food, great setting, a shame about the automatically applied service charge
Lovely setting, atmospheric, very pleasant courtyard seating, great menu, absolutely superb food, sensible prices and generally friendly and efficient staff. Let down in our minds only by the automatic addition of a very hefty 12.5% service charge which was stated as being ‘discretionary’ but which gave rise to a certain grumpiness when we tried to pay a lower percentage, which we still felt to be generous. This is rural Somerset, not London! The food was so good, however, that we shall certainly return and risk facing another little bout of grumpiness!

You simply cannot fault The Talbot Inn absolutely perfect in every way. Warm cosy and authentic in a perfect location for exploring Somerset. The staff are so friendly and nothing is to much. A well stocked bar and wonderful restaurant. Definitely one not to be missed.
