Not as good as last visit
The food was really good but it’s the details that matter to me; the staff couldn’t tell me which of their beers were vegan, that to me shows total disregard for customers. Side order was forgotten so arrived late after asking for it. A serviette for desert would have been nice. If you’re gonna promote yourselves as a premier league gastro pub then make sure your staff are up to the job, a couple of whom looked a bit miserable. Haven’t been here for a few years, it felt like a step down.
Be the first to ReplyLovely neighbourhood restaurant
This is a lovely neighbourhood restaurant. The food and service were great and we enjoyed visiting a different part of the city, it is worth the trip. The only negative was we felt the vegetarian option could have done with more cauliflower and sweet potato and less chickpeas. It’s a minor point and wouldn’t put me off going back.
Be the first to ReplyEnjoyable but won’t rush back
This is our 3rd visit and although we enjoyed our evening out at the Scran and Scallie, we felt the cocktails let them down. We enjoyed a glass of champagne each and the little touches for a birthday celebration were really lovely. We had the soup, butternut squash brioche and oysters to start followed by fish and chips, cod and shellfish risotto and ham, eggs and chips for mains. These were beautiful and very tasty. We then tried the rhubarb bakewell tart for dessert. This was just ok- the sponge was dry and didn’t taste of much. Staff were attentive and it was a nice meal. Not sure we will rush back as Edinburgh has so many other lovely places to try.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing food, less than perfect dessert
We visited the Scran and Scallie during Easter Weekend. The food was absolutely delicious. It would have been 5 stars if it wasn’t for the rather disappointing dessert. I had the 2 specials on offer, the smoked haddock muffin followed by lamb 3 ways. I can honestly say I’ve never eaten haddock or lamb as nice. The bread as a side order was a lovely accompaniment for the lamb. Truly delicious. My husband had haggis neeps and tatties for starter followed by the wagyu burger - again very very tasty. The waiter was very knowledgeable on his wines and offered us the prefect accompaniments to our meals. Then came dessert, we both had the chocolate orange and were left feeling very disappointed. The best way I can describe it was a bowl full of elements similar to when you were a child attending a party and having jelly and ice cream all in the one bowl, soggy and messy. However I can forgive that when considering the amazing first 2 courses, the ambiance and the wonderful waiting staff. Will definitely return, minus the chocolate orange.
Be the first to ReplyBrilliant Scottish restaurant
Brilliant food great service , we had the steak pie , ham egg and chips was on another level, fish pie was also terrific. Waiting staff were properly on it. Recommend

Very good restaurant/brewery. French is spoken there. The setting is pleasant. The haggis is delicious and I tried a non-alcoholic cocktail with fresh cucumber and very good.

The food was very good but service wasn’t up to the usual high standards. It was an hour between starter being served and main arriving. We have been coming for years and had booked this for my daughter’s graduation dinner - which we will now be cancelling.
Be the first to ReplyBirthday treat
Brief trip over to Edinburgh to see niece and her boyfriend and to celebrate a birthday. I’d booked weeks in advance as we really wanted to experience Tom Kitchin’s food. The place itself has a quirky layout, but airy and comfortable. Plenty of slick attentive staff on duty who welcomed us as long lost friends. Oysters to start the proceedings and for me ‘ham, egg and chips’ which sounds like nothing but both looked stunning and tasted even better. The rest enjoyed a mixture of meals and all raved about them. Despite the place being busy, the staff never lost sight of us and we were well looked after. A birthday ball of ice cream with a candle in it and a personal ‘happy birthday’ card on the table for me just rounded the lunch off perfectly. Top class.

The food is delicous, tasty, creative with large portions, the wine and whisky is also very good. The place is warm, cosy and pleasant, a nice moment to stay for dinner. The service was also good.

Visited with friends and was disappointed. Staff member couldn’t name a bourbon they sold and the food was pretty mediocre. Disappointed.
Be the first to ReplyDon't believe the hype!
My partner & I have been locals to this restaurant for the last year or so - we'd heard so much buzz about it and always seemed busy so we decided to make a booking for when we had family visiting. Food was nice, but to be honest nothing special. One of the guests had the steak pie which bizzarely only came with a pastry top which you don't expect for £20+ with no sides included in my opinion. My partner had a tasty ox cheek dish, but it was very small so not filling really for the price. Only 2 rosés on the menu with the cheapest priced at £39 a bottle, seems unnecessarily expensive. The waiting staff were ok. All in all, it was a nice dinner however there's so many other restaurants in the locality that are more affordably priced with tastier food so wouldn't visit again. I'm assuming the hype is all down to the owner's credentials, but it just didn't deliver for the price point in my opinion.

Had booked, but arrived a couple of hours early, which the staff happily accommodated. Lovely cosy dining room with mix of furniture. All staff were helpful and friendly, throughout our time there. Good food and wine menu, with staff explaining the specials, which I found irresistible. Great experience and will definitely go again
Be the first to ReplyA must visit
Four of us visited on a busy Friday evening and as expected found a lovely "bubbly" atmosphere. Whilst there is an excellent choice of food, I fancied the scallops and asked if it was possible to have them as a main course -"no problem", so had a main course sized portion, and they were stunning! The rest of the party enjoyed their meals just as much. Overall an excellent evening.
Be the first to ReplyGreat night out with the family.
We had a fantastic evening at the Scran and Scallie. It is much bigger than you first think on walking through the door, but they have set it up really well so you never feel swamped by people or noise from other tables. Food was really excellent, service was great, prices as you would expect for this type of restaurant. Can't fault anything, we will be back.

We visted on a busy Friday night. The ambiance was perfect , the food amazing and the service by Matt was excellent . Thank you.
Be the first to ReplyFantastic lunch
Today my friend and I went for lunch to scran and scallie it was my first experience. I have to say this will not be the last. The service from Matthew, Maxime and Balil was exceptional to say the least. The food was to die for. We both had scallops then the days speciality of cod risotto served with fresh mussels the flavours were wonderful. We then had a chocolate ganache that was equally wonderful. I would highly recommend this restaurant for anyone looking for great food and service. Thank you to all the staff we will definitely be back. Louise and Jan

Visited this spot during our trip to Edinburgh, the menu has a wide variety of traditional Scottish cuisine and an extensive wine list . I got the haggis neeps and tatties to start which was amazing! Followed by a cod risotto special which was to die for. We topped it all off with a sticky pudding and were absolutely stuffed! A great atmosphere and service was incredible from start to finish, our server (Chelsea?) was incredible! Extremely personable and knowledgeable about the menu to wine pairings, and went out of her way to recommend us spots to visit during our stay Definitely stop by if you have the chance!

Relaxed and comfortable vibe with great food. We didn’t have a starter or pudding but the sticky toffee looked amazing. Highly recommend the steak pie and fish pie - the perfect end to a day of walking in the cold.
Be the first to ReplyPrices are Unnecessary, Portions are Small and Service was Non non-existent!!!
One of the worst service experiences I've encountered at one of the most expensive restraunts I've eaten in. The table was booked online and card details required. The booking portal asked where we'd like to be seated but upon arrival we were not were we asked to be seated. The menu online was very simple but online lots of information was omitted. I ordered a pint of Edinburgh Gold which was £6.50 and this was not to my taste at all but at that price I wasn't going to let it go to waste ☺️. The cheapest glass of wine on the menu was nearly £14 which was nice but nothing to write home about. Now the food- personally I had the steak pie which was very tasty but for a dish that cost £20 it came with no veg or side it was the pie only in a modest size dish. I ordered the mash with it which was an extra £6!! It was very ordinary mash and certainly not worth the cost. My partner had the fish pie which had a measley amount of fish inside and really was more egg. Service - I don't even know how to rate this as we barely received any at all!!! The bald fella (like myself) didn't interact with us at all, he literally said as few words as possible. He reached over without saying excuse me and at the end of our mains brought us dessert menus without asking. We'd decided early on to end the experience as early as possible. To summarise the food was tasty but portions are honestly small!!! Prices are outrageous our total was £65 for 2 mains a side and 2 drinks!!! Service was non existent!!! Was it because we were 2 blokes and our waiter isn't a tolerant person? Had he a bad day and brought his problems to work? Lord knows but save your money there are much better restaurants than this one at a fraction of the price.

Superb evening meal and truly excellent, friendly and personal service. Food was exceptional, especially the Cullen soup and the exquisite fish pie. Couldn't be bettered and we will be returning again.
Be the first to ReplyGreat atmosphere and excellent meal!
My husband and I along with our two children (6 & 8) enjoyed a lovely meal at Scran & Scallie. The service was superb. The staff was so kind and attentive to my children. They spoke to them directly when it came to ordering and answering any questions which made them feel so grown up. I had the lamb special, my husband had the ham. Both meals were *chef's kiss*. We had the scallops and the haggis for starters and they were very good. The restaurant was warm and inviting. It felt cozy but also private at our table. We enjoyed so much and will definitely be back when we are in town again.

Lovely service but food was overpriced and very average in comparison to other local restaurants. Was a bit cramped too
Be the first to ReplyLovely Meal & Excellent Service
Went to this restaurant for a meal with my wife last night. What a lovely restaurant is all I can say. I ordered the monkfish and got two very large monkfish tail pieces cooked to perfection with lovely potatoes, veg and vegetable crisps. The fish was beautifully cooked tender without being under cooked. My wife took the steak pie (after asking for the piece of bone marrow to be removed but that is personal preference) it was a substantial sized pie with lovely meat and vegetables therein. The side order of chips was unnecessary due to our portions but were also cooked nicely. We both opted for the chocolate fondant with ice cream. Again beautifully cooked and delicious. The service was outstanding throughout, asked if I wanted tap water and bottle placed on table then immediately replaced when empty. Just a lovely evening. Our server was from Croatia and I did not get her name but so helpful a real credit to the restaurant.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent food, pricey wine
All our food was delicious. My fish pie was wonderful, my daughter ate all of her beef pie and my wife enjoyed the special of veal shank. The only downside was the expensive wine list and as a Castro pub I hoped for something more affordable .
