A fantastic hidden gem
This place is a hidden gem. A lovely greeting at reception. Welcome cream tea on arrival which we had in front of the fire. The accommodation was beautiful. Evening dinner was in the main restaurant which is really pretty with a roaring fire at one end. The food was some of the nicest we have eaten. Beautifully serviced, excellent quality and present by lovely, professional staff. The breakfast was the best ever. The quality of ingredients was 5 star and all served by the lovely Gemma, a fellow scouser.

Visited for Sunday Lunch and after hearing very good reviews was sum what disappointed in the quality of the food, the sirloin of beef was extremely tough and inedible. We also heard other people in the restaurant complaining as well. The front of house manager apologised and gave us a 5% discount. My thoughts were the meal was over priced and would I recommend....maybe not. Having said this the service was good.
Be the first to ReplyFriendly staff, lovely food and cosy atmosphere
My wife and I visited for a birthday lunch, in February 2024, and we had absolutely no complaints whatsoever. The staff were lovely and friendly, the food was delicious, particularly the pudding, and there was a nice cosy atmosphere, with a log burner crackling away. Perfect on a dreary February day. I did find my meal was a little under seasoned, but I didn't mind that as you can the season to your own taste, and far better than being overly salty. Overall, a very pleasant experience and really not too pricey either. I would really recommend the Punch Bowl Inn

We took advantage of the 2 nights for 1 January offer and had a superb time. This is a beautiful unspoilt area with lovely walking close by. The pub itself is very attractive. Our room, Peake was lovely, very cosy with a massive bathroom. A cream tea was included in the deal. It was delicious, a freshly baked scone and lovely cream. An excellent start. The bar and both dining rooms are cosy and inviting. The menu is not extensive but everything was very tempting. The two stand out dishes were the Guinea fowl and lamb rump which were both absolutely outstanding. The lamb in particular was incredible, probably the best we have ever tasted and so tender. The only dish that didn’t quite work was the cod which wasn’t very flavoursome and the fish sauce accompanying it tasted like butterscotch sauce, no fish flavour at all. A shame. The breakfasts were huge and again excellent quality and cooked beautifully. The chef is obviously a talent. They also have some wonderful staff members, friendly warm and professional. Service as it should be. We will be back I hope and would gladly recommend the Punch Bowl to friends.
Be the first to ReplyGenuine warm hospitable welcome - bravo!
On a bitterly cold Cumbrian winter’s day - we arrived at the PunchBowl without a lunch reservation and despite being fully booked the lovely manageress found a place for our party of 3. The restaurant was packed but Alice and her staff made us feel utterly welcome and cleared a space in their party-festooned mezzanine seating area. The food was exceptional - the signature cheese soufflé was delicious and my spicy butternut squash soup was delectable. Our abiding memory of the PunchBowl will be of conviviality and genuine hospitality - and of course the great meal. Bravo! We shall certainly return.

Had a great night here. The food was absolutely beautiful. Those beef cheeks were incredible. Super friendly staff give a really lovely warm welcome and have great banter, as well as providing fabulous service. We’d 100% recommend. Wish we lived closer, we’d be here all the time!

Warmth and quality from start to finish, the Punch Bowl gave us a cosy weekend and a great birthday celebration in the Lakes. The quality of the food and the rooms as well as service was fantastic. We enjoyed the bar and the restaurant and we were well looked after in both.
Be the first to ReplyA few niggles but would probably visit again
We were disappointed that on a Sunday there was only one vegetarian choice and on the kids menu none at all,to be fair on request they did do some kids veggie sausage but I had checked on booking that veggie options were on the menu and assured there was, also our order was take very quickly and our starters arrived really fast however we waited over 45 mins for our mains to follow…not ideal when you have hungry children with you,the waiter brought what he said were 4 x cauliflower cheese so everyone tucked in only to realise one potato dish was missing for our veggie diner, turns out it was 3x cauliflower and one potato we raised the mistake thinking the potato dish would be provided as a good will gesture but sadly no.However the food when it did arrive was delicious …the Sunday roast beef was a good sized portion and the side order of beetroot was very tasty, the bill including drink for 8x adults 1 child came to £370.00 … I think I would visit again and hope the little niggles were a one off.

Great hotel. Excellent value for money. Away from the crowds of Windermere and Bowness, yet still central. Breakfasts really good. Been staying and eating here for about 16 years and never disappointed.

Excellent place for a light lunch on our short tour of the countryside east of Lake Windermere. We received a very friendly welcome and enjoyed our meal and drinks in the pleasant outside seating area. We will definitely be back in future for another meal, or perhaps to stay in one of the boutique rooms.

I rarely hand out 5 stars, but in this case it's justified. We didn't stay unfortunately due to time restrictions, but wish we had. The quality of food here is simply outstanding judging by what we had. With a time restriction we didn't have time for three courses, but the two we had were stunning. I had the Guinea fowl and my partner had the sea bass. I'd barely tasted the Guinea fowl before my partner speared a taste and. threatened to demolish it --it was just divine--subtle, tender and full of flavour. Creamed potatoes were perfect. The dish was so good I could have had it again! My partner had the Sea bass which she raved over, and like me doesn't hand out praise easily. We didn't imbibe as she is teetotal and I was driving--another time we will stay over. Very professional helpful service without being obtrusive, the lovely lady who came to our table was so friendly and knowledgeable, checking allergies between courses shows good management and training too.. I am a hotel manager and my partner is also a hospitality professional--we were both very impressed by everything here. Oh and the lemon tart with damson sorbet is exquisite. Take a bow Punch bowl and team--you nailed it.

Ok - so it might seem a bit pricing but really don't worry about that ..... because boy is it worth it! A family treat, 3 courses each and each one exquisitely presented and perfect in every way. A beautiful Inn in a magical part of the world. Love it!

We had a super two night stay in the Birkett Room and were very pleased with the cleanliness, spaciousness and beautiful views from the room. We ate in the restaurant both evenings and found the food and service outstanding. We would certainly recommend The Punchbowl to anyone visiting the Lythe Valley area.
Be the first to ReplyComfortable accommodation with outstanding food service.
We booked the only room available, "Peak" which is on the North side of the building, right at the side of the surprising busy road. Fortunately traffic was much less through the night, and with the help of earplugs presented no problems. Our window facing east didn't have a light proof curtain or blind, so light pouring in at early hours might be a problem in the summer months. Light sleepers may wish to avoid this otherwise delightful, spacious room though. The bathroom was large with a roll top bath and separate shower cubical. Everything was clean and comfortable with a choice of sheets and blankets for those who dislike duvets. Downstairs there is a selection of cosy rooms, some with log fires, to dine in or to have a drink from the bar. Three real ales were available, all delicious. The evening meal service was outstanding, our meals were delicious, freshly cooked and served promptly. Their lemon tart and banana soufflé were both "to die for." Walkers are offered a selection of routes straight out of the hotel, 2 miles or 10 miles, there are walkers for all fitness levels.

Extremely dissatisfied with our recent visit. Went straight to main course and ordered two fillet tails with young stem broccoli and peppercorn sauce, waited 25 minutes which we didn't mind, my medium rare was medium at best and the rosti potato was burned and there must of been a teaspoon of peppercorn sauce, my partners medium was well done!!!! So after complaining that hers was overcooked (i thought I'd just eat mine) the manager proceeded to tell me the steaks were cooked correctly but he would replace hers, 20 minutes later her meal arrived when I had completely finished mine. The side of vegetables were cold by this time and not replaced. The manager offered a free dessert but I was well put out at this stage. Had to also wait 30 minutes for the bill which I had to go and get myself, and also correct because the cold uneaten vegetables i was charged for. Extremely disappointed.
Be the first to ReplyFantastic lunch at a reasonable price.
Had a wonderful meal here on a Saturday lunchtime. Off the beaten track but a great spot to find. Cosy decor, excellent service, great selection of cask ales and wines. Food was well cooked and in these difficult times not badly priced. We need to find an excuse to be passing again soon.

Dined and stayed over. As usual the food was excellent, well presented and so delicious, refined dining in a cosy comfortable country hotel/pub . Breakfast was lovely, all fresh fruit and orange juice, delicious Can’t wait to return

Really amazing food! I had the scallops for stater and a bite of my friend’s cheese soufflé (which was incredible), duck for main, and cheese board for dessert. It was all delicious and I wish I could have eaten it all again! The staff were also so friendly and helpful and we had a great time. Would definitely recommend!

The restaurant service was poor we had to wait ages for our food order to be taken and had to ask if we could order drinks. The water said the food would be worth the wait but it wasn't and food was over priced. Meal was unimpressive. Smallest King Scallops I've ever seen

We were on our way back from Oxford and planned a Sunday night stay at The Punch Bowl Inn as we traveled back to the highlands ..... I had some challenged making the booking online and called the hotel late one evening and the lovely young lady was new but very helpful and said she would have someone call me back in the morning... I managed to solve the online issue but a very lovely lady called the next morning and was so kind but noted we had managed to make our booking and said she was looking forward to welcoming us..... Our room was lovely - and really comfortable.... It is expensive and some of the touches could be better but its a lovely spot. Dinner on Sunday night was really lovely and the meal faultless..... One thing I would say is "ask' for the table you want when you arrive ( there are two lovely tables by the windows ) as when I asked for a specific table I was told "those were pre-boked by guests ..... The Manager ( young gentleman ) in the dining room was really attentive and did a great job .... I think a lot of wines on their wine list are no longer available so watch for that... shame as two of our choices were not available. Dinner is not cheap but I thought the meal was wonderful... We would most definitely go back.....
Be the first to ReplyWish there was a "good" button - place is better than average but not really "very good".
We’ve been to lunch a couple of times over the years but, I think, this was the first time we’d been for dinner. It’s a classic village pub, right next to the parish church. And it’s not easy to get to from near Bowness where we were staying. The sat nav took us mainly down single track roads. I was a nervous wreck when we got there but they make you welcome and the stress quickly lifted. Not least as one of the staff told us a longer but easier route back to the hotel (where he used to work). The menu is very much dining pub food. It plays to local Cumbrian ingredients but not slavishly so. So, there’s twice baked cheese soufflé, sitting on a bed of caramelised onions. And when did cheese and onion not work. The other starter was the almost ubiquitous ham hock terrine. This was a good version and, thankfully, not fridge cold, as often the case. It came with a slice of toasted brioche and a spoonful of a tangy homemade piccalilli. For mains, sea bass was perfectly cooked, right down to the crispy skin. It came with lightly cooked spring onions, mangetout and almost raw green beans (didn’t that go out of fashion in the Noughties?), with a scattering of new potatoes. Lamb loin was also spot on at medium rare. And there’s a little long cooked lamb which was equally but differently delicious. There’s a rectangle of crisp potato rosti, a few cubes of turnip, turnip puree and thin slices of radish for a bit of crunch. Good sauce. Deseerts are something we pass on quite often but there was still a corner to be filled. Lemon tart had excellent crisp pastry with a good citrus hit in the filling. Alongside, a lovely damson sorbet – well, they are in the major growing area of the Lyth Valley. The other was a classic bit of French patisserie – Gateuax Opera. Layers of light sponge, interleaved with layers of chocolate. It’s rich and also needed the tangy fruit sorbet to cut through Service was cheery and efficient which is all you want with a pub dinner.
Be the first to ReplyOh dear, what's happened.
We attended as a special treat as it's 'usually' nice but expensive. Starters were fine but .....oh dear, after that things went south rather quickly. Wife had lamb which she said was nice bur not great I had the duck, at least, it said it was duck but with the strongest sauce ever to grace a dinner plate, it could have been grilled Tofu. Now, before the Vegan brigade start complaining, I've nothing against Tofu, honest, but, I do take umbridge to being presented with a small amount of meat which had been drowned in a powerful meat taste killing weaponised sauce, which I can still taste now , several days later. We also had special french style potato which really just wasn't that special and not that hot. Go for the souffle I hear you cry, it's always great, what a treat, go on !! So we did.... Now usually it takes 20+ minutes so I was surprised when it came out, breaking the Souffle making Cumbria district record by quite a fair margin. Well, it looked alright as I collected my devouring utensil but .....NO !! These was a reason why it was so quick , too high a heat. So, nice and brown on the top, a cm or so of souffle then moulton hot, think the surface of the sun, crazy hot liquid souffle ingredients which my son managed to burn his mouth on. So, all in all with a bill north of £170 for 3, inc couple of cokes and one alcoholic drink, not impressed.

Lovely setting and fantastic views of classic English countryside, although limited garden space the patio areas are very nice and well kept. Coffee and scones on arrival were very nice, the interior of the Inn is spotless and very tastefully decorated throughout. The dinner menu was very good with ample choice, wine cost more than average and the bottle we really wanted was sold out so it’s not held in a cellar at £40 I thought this would have been. Starters were top notch: a salad and soufflé, mains of sea bass and steak were very good but not outstanding, desserts were outstanding with another soufflé being excellent. Dessert wine was pricey but a nice treat. Restaurant Service was very good, the receptionist was very polite but slightly off hand. Breakfast was excellent, full English and eggs Benedict cooked perfectly the only improvement would be a cappuccino.

The setting is stunning in the beautiful Luther valley on our arrival it was already very busy with a lovely atmosphere. We were sat at a lovely table and are well spaced apart . The menu is very good and there some very good wines. Our starters were cheese soufflé and ham hock terrine both delicious we both had the same main course Guinea fowl washed down with an excellent Chenin blanc the service is very good the one thing on our next visit is we will book a room and stay over hopefully very soon .
