Possible Food Poisoning
We booked The Pig for a family get together with some coming from London, Wales and Bath. Driving up the drive gave the impression of a stunning location although the cynic (and farmer) in me thought the placement of the chicken run would appeal to the masses. Anyway we were here to enjoy the food sourced within 25 miles. We were taken to our table and given menus. I chose the piggy bits to start (Hock Eggs & Colman’s Dressing and Saddleback Crackling & Apple Sauce) the Hock Eggs were ok, the Crackling underwhelming. followed by the Fish Pie (South Coast Fish Pie Agria Mash & Garden Greens) which is also what my wife ordered. Others on the table ordered the Pork Loin, Venison, Whole Sole and Confit of Duck. I have to say the Venison looked the better order. The Duck was a huge disappointment - one leg with more meat on a sparrow, the chap who had this was extremely disappointed as there was hardly any accompaniments as you are expected to pay an extra £4.75 for sides although some in our party ordered the Thrice Cooked Chips - well if they were cooked any longer there would be nothing left of them. My Fish Pie (which came with a tiny amount of greens which my Wife said was not local as they were out of season) arrived and while looked rather nice with its potato crust was lukewarm. On tackling the Pie, it was clear that what we had was actually a white soup under a thin layer of something with a few bites of fish. It tells you something when both my Wife and I had to ask for a spoon to eat the Pie/Soup with. I then had a Chocolate Mouse type thing which for £9.45 was another rip off. Probably the best thing for me was the floater coffee I had at the end of the meal. The staff, while attentive never seemed to smile - I guess they are not paid to do that as the bill comes with an already added 12.5% gratuity which you can remove if you want, how many do I wonder. We spent over £500.00 including drinks which just smacks of exploiting the public when especially they pride themselves on the 25mile food radius, £45.00 for a ribeye steak is rather extortionate compared to other establishments. I feel we paid Fine Dining/Michelin prices for underwhelming and mediocre food. To round off the day both my Wife and I got food poisoning from, what I can only assume. is the lukewarm Fish Pie. We shall certainly not be going back to this overpriced restaurant.
Be the first to ReplyGreat Sunday lunch
We were staying in the area and booked this quite sometime ago. We have stayed at The Pig near Bath and the one in Brockenhurst. So knew the food was really good and fresh. Todays lunch did not disappoint, we we collected from the lounge bar when our table was ready. Water for the table was offered, once ordered Bread and oil was bought round, the bread was the most delicious warm bread I have ever tasted! Our starters were bought out again very tasty, then the mains arrived, we both opted for a very tasty porchetta roast with all the trimmings. Throughout this the service was immaculate and given it was incredibly busy as it was Mother’s Day the service and food standards didn’t slip. We wouldn’t normally have a dessert but on this occasion we did and they were both delicious. We have had a lovely lunch with super friendly service. We would both absolutely return and would love to stay again soon 😍 thank you for a lovely lunch and the great service 😊
Be the first to ReplyUnderwhelming
Overall, an underwhelming experience. I am a farmers daughter and always support local butchers and try to eat only in season food. I have wanted to try The Pig for a while as the ethos fits in with my ethos. However, visiting for a family lunch, I expected more. Whilst the property is impressive and the staff friendly, the food was average. For such local produce you would expect a reasonable cost as there are few travel miles etc. but the price is massively inflated and the dishes are not worth it. The chips in particular were very poor, thin fries cooked ‘thrice’ but with little potato left.
Be the first to ReplyHuge Potential, let down by mediocre food
This venue has huge potential, the building, the setting, everything about it is perfect and was a huge attraction for me picking this place for a birthday event with friends. Sadly, the venue carries this place over the food - the food was a mixture of average to good. We had a booking for 2pm, slap bang in the middle of the day for Sunday roast and we are greeted with them running out of beef - to run out of one of your main components for a Sunday lunch booking seems poor. Service was friendly but incredibly slow. 5 of the 6 meals came out, then we all sat there waiting for 5 mins plus for the 6th meal and all the accompaniments - by this time, our meals were no longer very warm. For the cost the food was pretty average (starters and desserts were delicious) but considering everything is locally sourced and home grown - it was quite underwhelming on the whole.

First the good news, the ambiance, location and service were excellent. However, the food was poor. One dish, the pork was seventy percent fat (not marbled but fat). The dish was replaced by another choice but took 25 minutes to arrive when the other guests had finished their course. One of the childrens dishes, sausages, appeared devoid of meat and was not eaten (boxed up for the dog). The Sole whilst well cooked was extreme small. On the possède the steak was good and the childrens chicken was good also. Past experiences at the Pig have been good but whoever, or whatever, is happening on the food selection and preparation side has badly slipped. We will not revisit until some more positive signs appear
Be the first to ReplyVery uncomfortable chairs
I had lunch yesterday at The Pig near Bath. The food was good, not brilliant, but good enough. The service was excellent- couldn’t fault it in any way. I felt it was rather expensive for a special fixed priced lunch. However, my main gripe was the dining chairs which were unbelievably uncomfortable. I was in discomfort the entire duration of the meal despite asking for an additional cushion and today my back is really hurting. For this reason I will not be returning to the restaurant.
Be the first to ReplyDisappointing experience and lack of customer service overall
Disappointing Experience for a Special Occasion I recently visited the pig near bath for my wife's 40th birthday celebration, and unfortunately, our experience fell short of expectations. Despite booking a table several months in advance, our evening started with a 30-minute wait for drinks at the bar. Once seated, we were placed in a cold corner of the restaurant and neglected by the staff throughout the night. Despite constant reminders, service remained slow and disjointed. The situation worsened when my steak, ordered medium rare, arrived blue. This resulted in a delayed meal for me as it had to be sent back to the kitchen. Additionally, the Bun desserts tasted old and stale, and the candied nuts were inedible due to being rock hard. While one staff member provided excellent service, the rest of the team seemed disorganized and unresponsive. Even with only a few tables occupied, I had to personally request the bill after the meal. While I understand that the holiday season can be demanding, it shouldn't serve as an excuse for poor service. As customers who are generally easy to please, we had hoped for a special meal on this significant occasion. Unfortunately, our experience left us feeling underwhelmed. I never usually complain, however due such poor service I wrote a polite email to the restaurant to explain our experience. However I never got a reply, which tells me all I need to know. Won’t be going to the pig again.
Be the first to ReplyBit of a rip off
I’d been wanting to visit this restaurant for a couple of years and had high expectations. However we both left feeling like we’d been taken for mugs. £20 for a medium glass of Rioja! Outrageous. Being charged for tap water, £30 for lamb then an extra £5 per side. And to top it all off a 12.5% service charge. I sorely object to being dictated to as to how much of a tip I should leave. Totally manipulative because they know for a fact people are unlikely to argue the point in front of a room full of other diners. So you’re basically shamed into leaving a ridiculous tip on top of the already very hefty prices. Not entirely sure where the whole tipping the waiting staff idea came from to be honest but that is another debate! Nobody tips me for doing my job! Anyway the lamb was delicious. The rest of the food was nice enough but the £10 dessert left a lot to be desired (although the sorbet was exquisite). Definitely a one off experience for us, not to be repeated
Be the first to ReplyLovely Monday Lunch
Went to the Pig for lunch on a Monday. Restaurant was packed but despite this the service was very efficient and attentive. Had the three course set menu which came in at just under £30. The food was great and the atmosphere was perfect for a relaxed and unhurried Monday lunchtime experience. The setting and grounds are a bit special too - what’s not to like about this place?
Be the first to ReplyDisappointing food, feels mass catered
The Pig is a lovely hotel, the house itself is very inviting with large communal areas, attentive staff and a glorious setting. It’s quite easy to while away a couple of hours in the bar or drawing rooms. I’d come back just to sit down in front of one of those fires for the afternoon. But we were there for lunch, giving the restaurant a second chance after a poor lunch a few years ago. My issue last time was not following through on its supposed principle of using its kitchen garden and only using ingredients they can “grow or rear themselves”, or source from within 25 miles. Being within 25 miles of Bath and Bristol they can clearly source anything they want, from anywhere in the world, which makes the first part of their statement superfluous. Unfortunately nothing has changed in the restaurant. Staff were charming and it’s a unique place to spend your lunchtime, but the food lets it down. The only significant ingredients which could have possibly come from their own garden, in our meal, were a couple of salad leaves, a few slices of fennel and some badly drained, unseasoned kale, which leached water all over my main dish. The food largely has the feel of mass catering with frozen chips, frozen peas and dry pastry. There were a few highlights, like our ham hock bites and roughly cut tartare sauce, but generally flavours are under powered and lacklustre. I’ve had worse meals, but what I have issue with is the prices they charge for ot and promising, but failing to deliver on, an ethos of growing what they serve. The Newt, only a few miles away, does this approach well at a higher standard of cooking for the same price. The Pig has recently taken over Barnsley House, which used to have a fantastic, vegetable focused, garden menu. It will be a shame to see that replaced by this uninspiring offering.
Be the first to ReplyPerfect stay
We had a wonderful stay at The Pig. Staff were excellent, food amazing, bar with so many options I couldn’t believe it!!! The room was gorgeous, we had room 1 and it had a bath in the bedroom, four poster, room was huge! The bathroom again was huge. Large walk in shower, all tastefully decorated! We ate in restaurant for dinner (it’s not cheap, but where is? plus the quality and service is worth it) Breakfast was equally as good, the produce they serve is high quality and honestly worth it!!! We enjoyed every minute. Unfortunately we didn’t walk the grounds due to weather but we saw the deer in the fields which was lovely! Honestly visit this place, it’s a must!!
Be the first to ReplyEngagement Meal! Amazing!
We had our family meal for our sisters engagement! It was very special. Food was amazing. Service was brilliant. We had drinks before eating in one of the many lounges. The staff treated us exceptionally. 5 star.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent 2 night stay to rewind and relax
My husband booked us a two night stay as a Christmas present. We are self employed key workers. We work almost every day and worked all the way through each Covid lockdown, so we were in real need of some relaxation to get away for a couple of days. And what a treat it was. From the moment we stepped into the Pig near Bath, the staff were really lovely and seemed to take a genuine interest in us. Our room was spotless and the bed was huge and ever so comfortable. The food was something else. In the restaurant the calves liver and cold meat and homemade pickles were divine, as was the steak and local venison. We were too full the first morning for breakfast! The cocktails in the cosy lounges were delicious and breakfast on the second morning was superb. We loved the homemade granola, local honey, 3 fruit marmalade and sourdough….it goes on. When we felt the need to raise a query about our stay it was dealt with efficiently, quickly and in a friendly manner. We were also lucky enough to see squirrels and deer by the garden. Thank you to the Pig team for making our stay perfect and just what we needed. It has been wonderful!
Be the first to ReplyWonderful
We came with for a friend’s birthday for lunch. Staff were friendly and helpful and the food was excellent. Loved the fact that there was no pretentiousness as you might expect in a place like this - it all felt very relaxed but also very well managed. Would love to visit again.
Be the first to ReplyA good breakfast...
...but not for me. The Pig allows diners who are not in residence to join - apparently one table per setting. I'm not sure if this is communicated to employees, who we found rather distant and unwelcoming. The breakfast is good if unexciting - my wife particularly liked the buffet and the very posh granola. My daughter and I had the full and vegie fry-ups - pretty standard fare really. The spinach on my plate was sandy - spinach 101 is to rinse it well... My latte with almond milk was excellent if not very hot - my wife had a cafeteria which was rather mediocre. Butter is not on the table - you have to collect it from the buffet. It's delicious butter, in a rather large roll. It had run out so we asked for some more. It is difficult to cut and difficult to gauge how much you need so the novel approach doesn't work very well, in my opinion. It's too much of a faff - put the butter on the table! One highlight was the GF bread - it was quite tasty. There is a separate and rather sad GF table where the toaster wasn't plugged in - it's the right idea for coeliacs but it was a bit depressing - not a lot to offer and somewhat neglected. The other highlight was the delicious 3 fruit marmalade - the best I've had for some time now. We asked about buying some as the marmalade supplier had The Pig listed as a stockist but they denied all knowledge of this in spite of having a number of other in-house products available for sale to guests. The response to our query felt somewhat dismissive. I think that The Pig needs to think about how they want to engage with their non-resident guests - what seems to me to be a real opportunity appears to be a source of minor irritation to them - we wont be back. What helps in this regard is that The Pig is spectacularly inaccessible, both via Bristol and Bath. Traffic in this area is notorious so trekking down from Cheltenham is in no way incentivised.
Be the first to ReplyA Pigs Tale
Went to the Pig near Bath on Friday for lunch. Lovely setting and attentive, nice people looking after us. However, the food was awful, overpriced nonsense. The beetroot hummus was bland, the pork loin was so undercooked it was an effort to eat it. Worst of all though was when I got home and checked other reviews to test whether I was in the minority. I found out that a set menu is offered online but not when you’re physically there. £183 for 3 people that could have been a little over £100. Disgraceful really and gives Pigs a bad name.
Be the first to ReplyDisappointing lunch
We came with friends for lunch. The staff were off hand when we arrived. We were shown to our table which had uncomfortable wooden chairs and a basic wooden table. The waitress was not exactly friendly The menu disappointing all of us agreed there was not a lot that attracted our attention. The tuna tartare as a starter was was very poor standard All in all for the money it was not up to a standard that it promises
Be the first to ReplySublimely stylish country retreat
Stayed at the Pig near Bath during the very cold, snowy weather in December 2022. The hotel looked at its best with beautiful traditional Christmas decorations and roaring log fires in every main room. Staff are wonderfully welcoming and the rooms are gorgeous and comfortable. We ate in the hotel on two nights and were really impressed with the choice and quality of the food, as well as with the commitment to local produce only. Wine list and cocktails were excellent too, especially when snuggled on a sofa in front of one of the lovely fires. We stayed in The Hide, which was a magical bolt hole. Loved every minute of our stay.
Be the first to ReplyLovely location and attractive surroundings
Have been here probably 5 times now for lunch. The building and surroundings are lovely and it has a relaxed vibe. However I felt the food was not up to standard this time. The first thing that really annoys me, and this is not the only place to do this. They advertise a set lunch good value menu online - but when you sit down at your table you are only given the a la carte menu, you have to ask for the set menu! This is very cheeky, if you don't want to serve it then don't offer it the first place! I didn't see them offer the set lunch menu to anyone else. The herring was bland, and the parsnips with the gurnard were pretty tasteless and slimy. My daughter had the cavelo nero with her vegetarian casserole, it had no seasoning or flavouring on it - just completely plain. (We both decided we could cook it so much better ourselves) The chips were not crispy. That said, my husband was very happy with his venison pasty and sausage and red cabbage. The chocolate mousse was lovely. Really for the prices they are charging they need to make sure the food is spot on, there is too much competition in this area and you can not rely on ' The Pig' name if you want repeat business. I will go back. Maybe the main chef was having a Monday off!
Be the first to ReplyChristmas tradition
We have visited Pigs on 27 December for about the last 12 years, always enjoying the cosy, home from home feel, and knowing the menu will be something we both enjoy. This year however, and I’m not sure whether this is because Bath is landlocked, but the menu seemed far more meaty than usual. Not being a meat lover, but also gluten free, I found the choice of starters very limited, and was really limited to mackerel - which was a little odd to look at, but quite tasty, and a parsnip risotto. I have to say though, the risotto was delicious. We’d booked our table relatively early in the day as we had family to visit in the evening, and arrived in pouring rain. The restaurant was very quiet, but we felt quite rushed, with no offer of pre lunch drinks and had nothing of the cocktail list offered at the table. Food was quite enjoyable, but this year’s visit was definitely below par this year.
Be the first to ReplyLovely place, food and people
Brilliant location, building and food. Our server was lovely and attentive especially to the kids and made time to hear my son’s various stories although the restaurant was very busy.
We had various starters all of which were lovely and light. When the pollock was advertised with “fish sauce” I questioned how fishy it was to be told it is quite a bold fish sauce, happily our server immediately recommended a lemon butter sauce I could have instead which, again, was brilliant. Kids meals were a good size and good quality. My wife had the hogget for main and it was superb. Lovely place and lovely people. Highly recommended
Stunning location but restaurant disappointing
I booked The Pig for my husband's birthday having heard such great reviews. The location is stunning, as was the accommodation. Sadly, the restaurant was the let down. We dined with two friends, who were also staying (they had stayed and dined there before). Having taken 3 attempts at providing us with the correct menu, we made our choices. All four of us experienced different disappointments. My mussel starter consisted of many empty shells, my husband's steak was tough, one friend's steak was very salty and the other friend found the skate wing had been cooked in far too much oil. In addition the service was very slow and we struggled to get the attention of the sommelier, who was clearly run off his feet. Such a shame as it would have been lovely to return again at some point.
Be the first to ReplyWhat a rip off - I went home hungry and disappointed
I'm not normally one to complain, but really feel that I must do so. I can't tell you how excited I was to have dinner at The Pig.
I had read that the concept is local food also from the kitchen garden. I eat whole food plant based. My mostly meat-eating family had assured me that there would be vegan options on the menu.
I am sorry to say that I have never had a more disappointing vegan meal, the disappointment being all the greater because of the expectation. With vegan dishes it is a lot about presentation - food should be pleasing to the eye as well as delicious with contrasting flavours and colours and of course when possible local and seasonal fare.
My starter was black carrots. Just that. Zero presentation, no additions. My main course was broccoli on a plate. I know it's a difficult time of year for salad stuffs, but my vegetable garden is full of delicious overwintered salad stuffs - tiny ruby chard leaves, rocket, purple mizuna, tiny kale leaves, herbs, red-veined sorrel. Surely it would have been possible to include something like that in the presentation. Price-wise I would certainly have expected more than just carrots/broccoli on my plate.
I have never before been to an expensive, attractive and prestigious restaurant with great reviews and gone home hungry and disappointed.
Stunning location, excellent staff
What a beautiful building, well converted into an hotel
The decor is cheap painted brown furniture, quirky junk shop finds and every Farrow and Ball sludge colour on the walls.
But most country house hotels are…
The setting is stunning
Front of house staff deserve six stars. Excellent
On to food: the ingredients were of the highest quality. The cooking of them was not so good
Hand dived scallops under seasoned
Chalk stream trout and mussels, beautifully cooked, but over seasoned
The Hoggett Pie was not a proper pie: it just had a lid!
Ate it all, though, after some salting and scraping off sauce
Breakfast - The Full Pig - burnt bacon, half a field mushroom (!) and one of the best sausages ever, with all the other stuff you expect
Drinks reassuringly expensive
Relaxing getaway
We stayed for 2 nights to celebrate our anniversary, Staff were absolutely fantastic I cannot fault them at all. Attentive, polite & friendly in all departments. Hotel setting remote but quiet & beautiful. Ambiance fantastic. Wine outstanding & advice from Ed one of the sommelier’s was much welcome & his knowledge was outstanding. We had treatments in the potting sheds & again I cannot fault them we both rated them highly. Also a special mention to Bea who kept our drinks topped up & made us feel so welcome. Come prepared to spend some money its not cheap but in this instance you definitely get what you pay for. 10/10 Thank you to all.
