It's a really cool spot with great ambiance, friendly attentive staff, and good food. Soft lighting and a cool rustic look made it an excellent place for dinner. Unfortunately, I was driving, so I did not drink any adult beverages, but they had a good selection--next time I will.
Be the first to ReplyThis restaurant is in a building that dates back to 1690.
The inside is totally open concept with stone walls and wood on the ceiling. The ambiance is unlike anything you have experienced. Inside, there is a bar at one end and the kitchen is behind the bar. They offer a limited selection of beer, wine and cider. From the appearance of the bar, they offer dozens of types of Scotch whiskey. We entered and went to the bar to let them know we were here. We got to our table and ordered a beer for me and a glass of wine for my wife. The menu consists of many types of steak with a seafood, chicken or vegetarian dish. We both chose the pan fried hake filet with creamed leaks, cubed potatoes and herb oil. Our dinner arrived in around 20 minutes and looked great. I wanted to start eating immediately, but I took the time to snap a picture. We both thought the taste was excellent. This was one of the culinary highlights of the trip. We strongly recommend that you make reservations weeks in advance if you want to eat here.

I visited the Old Mill last week, and concur with the majority of reviewers that the steaks are some of the best I've ever tasted. The charcoal grilled 6 week dry aged steaks have wonderful flavour. Personally I'd have preferred proper chips than skinny (and slightly hard) French fries. However, my biggest disappointment was that, in the 21st century, and with such great care and pride of their steaks, why on earth does this "pub" not serve any proper, naturally conditioned, real ales. There are so many stunning ales available these days that can compliment the most sophisticated of meals, to be offered a range of pressurised, flavourless keg beers was a real let-down.

A locals favorite, you will find good drinks and friendly craic at the bar. We were back a second night enjoying the banter. Take a table and order the specialty of the menu... awesome charcoal grilled 28 day dry aged steaks from a local farm. I had the 40 0z "Holy Grail" steak. The view of Castle Stalker of Monty Python fame from the back garden is marvelous as well. It's on my top5 list of the worlds best watering holes.

I'm come out of Yelp retirement to write this review because I loved this place so much. It's an absolute gem. If you're looking for Highland atmosphere, look no further. There is traditional Scottish charm (woodburning stove, stone walls, white plaster, old barrel bar, highland cow taxidermy) and some more modern touches that keep it fresh. The bartender was super friendly and informative about the beers and they looked like they had a fair whisky selection for such a small place. The perfect place to come after visiting Castle Stalker if you need to warm up.I didn't get to try the food because they don't serve food on Mondays or Tuesdays, but would stop back in a heartbeat if I was close by.
