Came here to celebrate my birthday.
.. service, presentation, and food was top notch! Enjoyed my dining experience here and would definitely come back!
Be the first to ReplyThe Modern is a special restaurant.
Definitely a special occasion spot unless you have a deep pocket. It is expensive, but one of those places - like Le Bernardin - that continue the tradition of fine dining without stuffiness and pretension. Superb food, beautiful setting and excellent service. A fine option for more casual dining (at a lower price point) is sitting at a table in the bar area, where you can also order food a la carte. The pasta with fresh black truffles is a standout!
Be the first to ReplyThe Modern is in a beautiful space right next to the Museum
The Modern is in a beautiful space right next to the Museum of Modern Art overlooking the garden. The style was very sleek (which makes sense given its name). The seats were also particularly comfortable! There were many drink options to choose from, but I appreciate the several mocktail choices. The one I chose was delicious! The meal was a 6 course tasting menu which included: an amuse bouche of iberico ham on a Parmesan tuile, egg on egg on egg, lobster salad, bread, sea bass, artichoke agnolotti, venison and then dessert.Hits - The egg dish was a signature and for good reason. It was perfectly executed and a great way to kick off the meal. The warm bread and homemade butter - how can you go wrong? And the venison was made by the perfect cook and absolutely delicious sauce.Misses - the agnolotti dish (unfortunately the sauce was too salty) and the lobster salad (I love lobster, but it was paired with a slightly sour apple sauce - interesting take but lobster is naturally sweet so I didn't think it worked as well).Dessert - we started with a pallet cleanser which was celery ice cream over rhubarb - what a unique and delicious pairing. Perfect cleanser before dessert! Then the main dessert was citrus focused - mandarins with a sponge cake and mandarin ice cream surrounded by a ring of cream cheese mousse. It was so tasty and well balanced. To finish we each got 3 little bites of chocolates which is always a nice way to end a big meal.Service was excellent and they took care of my dietary restrictions well, which I always appreciate. I just wish they did the warm washcloths at the beginning like so many Michelin restaurants do to help you clean your hands before the first course comes out (which was eaten with our hands).

The modern is an excellent restaurant offering several drink options and a tasting menu that appears to change regularly. The views of the garden are nice and the dining room is simple yet sleek. The service is what one would expect in a restaurant of it's caliber. The meal itself was excellent but I could have skipped the artichoke ravioli. It was not a hit for me as I thought it was salty. I also was not a fan of seeds on the bread but without the seeds the bread was delicious. The eggs on eggs on eggs dish is a nice play on eggs executed successfully. The sauce on the lobster was delicious and the sea bass was good but not memorable for me. The asparagus with the sea bass was impressive as it had a sweet taste to it. The highlight of the night was the main course. The venison was delicious and everything on the plate was fantastic. The desserts were good but nothing out of this world. The venison and eggs on eggs on eggs was the main highlights for me. Finally, the lemonade drink with egg whites was one of the best drinks I've ever had. I would surely come back and hopefully the tasting menu is elevated even more.
Be the first to ReplyWonderful experience.
Classy, innovative, high quality. Everything you would expect from a Michelin star tasting menu + more. Friendly and knowledgeable staff (wine pairing).

Had a very enjoyable dinner at the Modern on a Saturday evening. It's a six-course tasting menu, but with all the nice little snacks and bread and bonbons, it's almost 10 course. All the courses were very delicious and coherent. The ingredients were super fresh and the seasoning was perfect. The pace of service was great. The dining room is spacious and beautiful and well decorated. Loved everything here and would love to come again!
Be the first to ReplyVisited the restaurant twice in past few years.
Great restaurant. Spent fabulous nights there. Would definitely go there again
Be the first to ReplyThe modern is definitely worth of 2 Michelin stars.
We love their 6 course tasting menu. I definitely not sure why ppl gave out low scores. I think this is definitely some front runner among those 2 Michelin stars restaurants. Everything is fresh. If u don't like sea food, I dont think u should come here.
Be the first to ReplyTLDR: the best service I have ever experienced, the food
TLDR: the best service I have ever experienced, the food was spectacular, delicious pieces of art, and I so truly want to come back as soon as possible.A friend of mine recommended the modern after experiencing the dinner tasting menu. I spontaneously checked to see if it were available for lunch the same day and I was surprised that there was a lot of availability! I knew nothing of the modern walking in so I was surprised that everyone was well dressed but it was lunch so I think it was a little bit more lax (I was coming from school). We were offered the tasting menu which was composed of the "chefs favorite lunch menu items" and decided to go ahead and give it a go.I genuinely loved every single bite that we had. My favorites were: the eggs on eggs on eggs - caviar, egg yolk, "fried egg sauce", dill and some herb oil served with toasted brioche; roasted lobster with creamy spinach and Parmesan foam (opted for the supplemental truffle but totally not necessary); and the chocolate torte with hazelnut praline and malt ice cream. The bread was also fluffy yet crisp and warm and buttery I would come back just to have the bread again. Also worth a mention is the mushroom sabayon from the crispy sea bass dish. I would eat anything and everything or even drink that sauce on its own if I could. These dishes are some of the best I have ever had and will probably be some of the most memorable this year. The service was impeccable. I felt as though each of the wait staff genuinely cared about our experience. Everyone was so warm and inviting and it felt as though they knew exactly what we were thinking. I have been to many other fine dining establishments but I can't think of better service that I've had. The true cherry on top was the kitchen tour at the end. It was so cool seeing what happens behind the scenes. Truly a magical experience.Overall: Book it. A true treat for a foodie and a perfect place for a celebration or fancy date night.
Be the first to ReplyA good 2-star restaurant by Moma.
The Food was good, especially the egg on egg on eggs. What I am not sure if I like is the ambiance. If you are looking for someplace that is for intimate gatherings then this might not be the spot. The service was good, but nothing too spectacular. Staff were able to explain what we would be expecting clearly, so that's a good thing.

Pretty solid for lunch, very reasonably priced for 2 Michelin stars. The duck breast was probably the highlight for me, but the eggs on eggs on eggs were good too.
Be the first to ReplyRecently visited for private dining and had a great time.
High quality and fresh ingredients. Food was a bit underwhelming this time. The gem lettuce was well plated but the charred avocado was barely noticeable and the flavor was overwhelmingly the tart buttermilk. Beef tenderloin dish was perfectly done. Dessert was a blueberry pastry that was also underwhelming because the pastry was no longer crisp
Be the first to ReplyI tried the enhanced tasting menu in the kitchen table.
The reason for my lower-than-average rating is the big difference b/w my expectation and the reality. 1. It's a 99% American restaurant with 1% French mix-up. Don't expect it to be similar to Daniel/Per Se/Le Bernardin. Take it as a sports bar so you don't have the misunderstanding.2. The most aggressive seasoning (which they're actually proud of) among the 20ish Michelin restaurants I visited. I understand taste is subjective/personal but I do think it's too over. No other Michelin has such an overwhelmingly strong flavor. The lobster glaze is too sour for me so they offer me the truffle pasta as a make-up (which is appreciated). Unfortunately the pasta is super salty so I ask if they could use less salt later. Then the duck is again super salty. In my opinion, a Michelin star restaurant should be able to control seasoning in a finer way, let alone it's a $295 enhanced tasting menu. The over-strong flavor leaves me an impression of lack of accuracy. It's probably because they have too many orders from the bar and the dining area so they don't really have time to be careful enough. 3. The $295 enhanced menu is almost the same as the $225 tasting menu. The extra $70 probably only gets you closer to the chefs so you can hear hundreds of "we" when eating (they answer "we" loudly every time they get a new order). According to a chef, the difference b/w the two tasting menus is only limited to one course so it's not really enhanced. 4. I really don't know why they can get two stars since it's way much behind some counterparts like Daniel/Jungsik/Aquavit. Even among American Michelin stars, it's way much behind one-star Gramercy Tavern. I think they should be very lucky to get one star. Can't believe they actually have two.Unfortunately it's the first time that I felt the food quality of a Michelin restaurant is not even OK so I'm unable to finish the desserts. Maybe the bar sitting and several a la carte's should be the right way to visit this place. If you happen to be a big fan for super strong seasoning, this is the right place for you; otherwise, just skip the tasting menu.

We had a lovely experience at The Modern!!We ordered the steak tartare with crispy potatoes, tarte flambée, and broccoli cheddar ravioli as appetizers. The courtesy gluten-free bread and olive oil was so delicious that we asked for another! I like how this restaurant catered to my dairy and nut allergy with great attention. The appetizers surely made me wait in anticipation for the main courses. We ordered charred octopus, hand-cut tagliolini with black truffles, and roasted chicken with tardivo and foie gras for the main course. Wow oh wow!!! I was thoroughly impressed with the juiciness and flavor tasted in the roasted chicken. Upon arrival, we were immediately seated after our coats were taken to a secure location. One downside to this restaurant is that the tables and chairs are super close to each other which doesn't leave much space in the case that someone were to leave the table, go to the restroom, and return the same way that they came. (Which may or may not have happened to me haha... I felt like it was such a maze trying to get back to my seat and there were waiters and waitresses who almost ran into me!) While I was seated and waiting for my food, I was impressed and amused with how the wait staff seemed to have ninja-like skills to maneuver between the tables. I just feel like the intimate seating arrangement looks classy at first glance but logistically speaking, it can be a hazard to a guest or to the wait staff. The seating arrangement is also too close for comfort in my opinion. There is lots of background noise and you can hear the next table's conversations nearby. I felt like this small detail put a sour taste in my mouth like as if the elegant vibe was being watered down. Perhaps the elegance exudes more in the evening setting. I'd like to give this 2 Michelin star restaurant a benefit of the doubt, since we dined during lunchtime.Overall, the entire meal took about 2 hours! Plus, our waitress did a phenomenal job with staying attentive to our needs, cleaning our table between the courses, recommending a delightful dessert wine (Chenin Blanc- similar taste to Moscato), and for surprising my brother with a candle on his ordered dessert! He got the chocolate mille feuille and he made a comment that the dessert was all about the presentation and there was less focus on the taste. We were still impressed with how thoughtful and kind the restaurant was to remember my brother's birthday though. I thought the all gender restroom was super cute and friendly too! My restroom stall, however, was the dimmest and I felt like I was in a grungy club instead of an elegant restaurant since it wasn't well lit.Close location to MoMA. Beautiful view of the museum's courtyard. No museum entrance from the restaurant though due to Covid-19 safety bag and temperature check precautions.Last thoughts: The culinary experience was definitely worth it and 2 Michelin stars well deserved!!!
Be the first to ReplyAbsolutely incredible! We eat here every time we come to
Absolutely incredible! We eat here every time we come to the city. You do need to book in advance and put a deposit down to be able to reserve a table. However, the do have a "bar side" of the restaurant that you have a good chance of getting into but that side doesn't offer the tasting menu. With that, the tasting menu is amazing! You can also add a wine pairing with it which is very good! We also added the truffle dish with our pairing for an added cost and we were so happy we did! Basically the food, service, drinks, and atmosphere is incredible, our server was Steve and he was great! I would highly recommend coming here. It is a two Michelin star restaurant so obviously it will be expensive but so worth the money! Online they do have a formal dress code, so keep that in mind as well.
Be the first to ReplyMy husband planned this evening to celebrate my birthday.
The food was delicious. It is fine dining so it is smaller 7 course plates. The drinks were refreshing as well. I was disappointed that this was fine dining, but they allowed guests to dress very casual. For the experience, expected it to be more properly dressed. Also, it was noted that we were celebrating a birthday and wish they would have don't something to make it special.

We recently dined at the Modern for the first time since the pandemic. We dined in the bar room, which is a bit livelier than the formal dining room (although we also like the dining room). Each of our courses were excellent and some truly memorable. The steak tartar was an unusual combination of flavors and textures, the oysters were superbly fresh, and the octopus unusual. (the chicken was uneventful, so I would suggest to skip it and try something else). The chocolate mille feuille dessert was superb an absolute must! The service was attentive, professional and friendly.

We hadn't been back to The Modern since Thomas Allan took over two years ago. What a transformation! The food has markedly improved, certainly worthy of its Michelin stars and on the way to a third. Out six course pre fixe was wonderful. Not a single complain from the three of us. There were a lot of oohs and aahs. The egg dish was superb, the many fish dishes and duck all reached levels of perfection. The amuse bouche and desserts and chocolates were equally exceptional. Service was excellent. The atmosphere seemed to have improved and was more relaxed with a focus on the views from the large windows.
Be the first to ReplyThe 2 Michelin stars are well deserved.
Our lunch was a celebration of a birthday but it could've as easily have been an impromptu meal after a day at MoMa. It was that easy with the online reservation. The Modern as a restaurant was both inviting and interesting. The tarte flambée opener was a good bite but it became successively saltier because the jambon was very salty. I would've been happier with 1/3 less ham but that's just me. The PEI oysters were slightly too acidic with the limequat mignonette but the oysters were delectable. My favorite starter of the 3 we ordered was the hamachi with purple brussels sprouts. Actually, truth be told, the brussels sprouts on their own alone were my favorite bite of the whole meal. The morsels were perfectly cooked texturally and taste-wise. My tagiolini entree at $49 was a close second, although the black truffles were a little underwhelming. The lamb entree that the birthday boy had was a melt-in-your-mouth moment rarely executed with such precision. Desserts looked beautiful but the presentations looked similar with the shards of cocoa dusted philo on the mille feuille and burnt caramel pieces on the chestnut montblanc. Everything also had the same mouth feel. I was looking for texture or cake in one of our desserts for contrast but we still enjoyed the decadence that comes with rich sweets. My Earl Grey tea cut some of the creaminess but if there was something bright in the desserts like the limequat mignonette that we had earlier to finish off the rich lunch, that would have been perfect! The Modern restored a sense of normalcy in New York for me today and I welcome its existence among the many fine dining experiences in our city.

Be the first to ReplyFood was to delicious to take pictures.
One of the most amazing dining experiences I have ever had. Service was impeccable from the moment I walked in. I made a reservation and was seated promptly. Ordered half the menu with friends and family and had nothing but compliments. Ordered all three of the deserts, my preference was the chocolate one but honestly you cannot go wrong with anything on this menu. Please enjoy.
Be the first to ReplyThe Modern had great ambience from the beginning.
Arrived before my friend and sat in the bar room, which was very lively & crowded for only 5:45om. After arriving at our table, the service and food was great. The beginning course of eggs on eggs on eggs was to die for. However none of the other food FLOORED me, which you would expect when your meal is ($350 - added on truffle pasta & Wagyu). The Wagyu was delicious, especially with the sauce. I did really enjoy my cocktail with Acquivit, very unique.I would normally give this restaurant 5 stars due to the great food and service but felt the very high price was just not justified as with other Michelin restaurants.
Be the first to ReplyGreat food and great service.
We came about 45 minutes before our reservation and got some cocktails at the bar. We had four different ones and they were all excellent. The tasting menu was fantastic. One of the savory dishes had a sauce that was a little too sweet for my taste. The eggs on eggs on eggs was one of the more memorable.

Tried this place out for Restaurant Week 2022 for their 2-course lunch for $39. We ordered the steak tartare with crispy potatoes and oysters with limequat mignonette for our apps, the roasted chicken with cabbage + foie gras and sea bass with grilled broccoli + fennel broth for our main. For dessert, we got ordered a toasted sesame ice cream with passion fruit to share, which was light and airy in texture. Overall, it was a phenomenal experience, from both the food to the ambiance, and I cant wait to be back at my next visit to the MOMA.

Went to this restaurant a few times and they never disappoint, the ambience alone is 100% magnificent and the food is top tier in quality. The preparation is very telling, the taste and flavors are exquisite and your taste pallets would have you asking for more but be sure to stack your wallet because you are paying for quality and not quantity at The Modern. Sorry, all my pictures are from the beginning of the establishment and I don't hold any current captures of the menu's/food I ordered.
