The Ivy Southampton Street London Reviews from The Last Year
Don’t miss it!
Great atmosphere; great staff Shepard pie the best …very enjoyable, we went twice. I had told them we were celebrating a birthday… a little disappointed as we were leaving.. they remembered.. but… and I saw a kid who got a beautiful display of birthday from restaurant… oh well
Outstanding service made this a great meal and visit.......shame about the cover charge !
Special occasion meal before the Theatre. Service was excellent, attentive and professional. Food really good, varied menu and for London I felt was reasonable. We were a couple and the tables are close together. That said, luckily for the most part of our meal they were empty immediately around us. Service charge was added and we felt it was worth every penny for the level of service provided. However we later realised an additional "cover charge" of £2 each was also added which seemed seemed excessive, particularly with no explanation.
Yes, it's very good.
I had a PFL booked with some media types - one an occasionally prickly overseas journalist, the other a bit of a lefty film director. So basically your average Ivy types. We needed somewhere to chit chat that wasn't too buzzy. And drinks, if I were to survive the encounter. The Ivy was great. As a freeholder of various ubiquitous acronyms and mild autistic, I can cope with most situations in life, but draw the line at poorly made martinis. So I was very pleased to be introduced to a very charming, patient and talented barman. This made for a very pleasant half hour or so before my guests arrived. The food was normal Ivy fare - just what was needed. I could go on, but there's no point. The Ivy is a bit of an institution and you should know what to expect by now. A perfect lunch with charming people.
What a disappointment
We visited on a Friday evening and it was so disappointing. We had really looked forward to it as we don’t often get the chance to dine out in London. What a disappointment. The tables were so jammed together, they had bolsters on the seating to keep people apart but there was no way anyone could have a private conversation as everyone was so close together. The starters were nice but then it went down hill. The fish and chips was average pub grub. My husband is not a really big eater but he was glad he had a starter as the portion was poor. I had the fish pie and it was dry and had little or no seasoning, in fact M&S fish pie is far better. The young lady who served us initially was very nice but toward the end of the meal a sour faced waiter took over and was less than welcoming. Well past its best I would say and there are far better places to eat
Yummy
always so yummy staff great food was so good going again next week for my sons birthday as it’s his favourite they made him a fun non alcoholic cocktail
Sad old Ivy
This restaurant is living on its old reputation . Truly disappointing which is a shame as it used to be so lovely., It has become a chain of restaurants and lost its magic , which is so sad .
Lovely staff. But are you sure you want to really pay the 'optional' 13.5% service charge...?
Firstly, very pleasant staff and lots of them. Tuna tartare and cheese souffle to start were both very good. Similarly mains of ravioli and sea bass. The only issues were the wine - we ordered Sancerre but it was the most odd example I have ever tasted. It was far more like a Chardonnay or even a Riesling so did we get what we ordered? Secondly, an 'optional' service charge of 13.5% is pushing the limits of your patrons' tolerance. Overall, very enjoyable but that service charge is well over the top.
Thrown out by a grumpy Italian waiter.
Our third trip to the Ivy and our second in West Street. The first two were excellent. This was a pre-theatre booking. The food was only ok this time, my fish a little pink. At the end of our coffee my partner nipped downstairs to use the facilities, as she left our waiter, whom had looked more than a tad angry all the time we were there, apologised and said he needed the table. He immediately presented the bill and a card machine and then started to clear away the table detritus. I said I was waiting for my partner. He declined that idea, said he’d bring anything I’d forgotten to the door and effectively threw me out. £132 and sod off. Terrible terrible experience. Watch out for Italian waiters in the Ivy.
Very bad experience
How disappointed was I, looking forward to my meal at The Ivy today. Have been there many times over the years but after today’s experience will be the last. From the moment we opened the door, to be ignored by staff as they where to busy chatting to acknowledge us, no one asked to take our coats, which were soaked from the rain, then to be sat at a table by the kitchen, admittedly we where moved, waited ages to be asked if we would like a drink, and only because we called the waiter over to take our order! Starter was cold and had to go back, I always have the Cheese Soufle which was definitely not up to standard.( was at J.Sheekey a few weeks ago, Soufle there was definitely up to standard). Drinks were flat, and had to go back, food was cold, we definitely did not stay and have dessert or coffee. Even the toilets where not up to standard, could go on but I think I have said enough, such a shame when you are looking forward to a nice meal at supposedly a good restaurant, but today definitely did not get that.

Nice spot Was worried about it being too "touristy" but that wasn't the case Food is solid Presentation fair Service better than expected Overall ambiance is a bit dated but ok Prices are too high for what it is

We went here expecting your normal high tea, and we were blown away by the service and ambiance. We were well taken care of the whole way. The bottomless champagne stayed bottomless. The food was amazing. We dream of this every now and then. The food was plenty. Each of us got our own stack, as opposed to some places where one stack is for two. We were positively stuffed. The sandwiches had yummy fillings and the deserts were fresh. The smoothie was the favorite.
The most amazing food experience I've ever had! Start to
The most amazing food experience I've ever had! Start to finish- amazing appetizers- entrees and fabulous desserts- the cocktails are not to be missed! The service is perfect- the atmosphere is top-notch! We can't stop thinking about the amazing meals that we had - highly recommend the arachini truffle balls, and the chocolate bomb!
Had a lovely late lunch here with my cousin.
My first full day in the city. I was actually planning on having a meal on the other side of town, but by the time my cousin met me I had a hankering for some fried food so we walked to this vicinity. We were seated right away by a friendly hostess. They placed us inside, but got moved to the last table before the outside area as we wanted an outside table. It was a nice compromise. I'd say this was the most local meal I had while I was in town. Nice meal and the service was amazing. We were so well taken care of.
I came here with my sister.
We had spent the day touring London and this was our final stop. Tip-#1 make a reservation as the place fills up quickly at night and the wait can Be lengthy The appetiser was the buffalo mozzarella salad. Just an amazing starter. My main was the Fish n Chips. A decent portion of fish. The chips were an excellent side. I did find the mushy peas - done more as a puree a tad bland and it really did not add to the meal. I prefer my peas with an English meat pie. Tip #2 the Fish & Chips do not come with ketchup. Malt vinegar, lemon half and tartar sauce. If you feel the need for anything more just ask. Dessert was the Chocolate Bombe. The presentation was very nice. A scoop of ice cream with a honey comb and spun toffee centre with a thin chocolate shell. Our server then poured hot butterscotch over the shell which melted. Tip #e3 Perfect end to the meal and for sharing.
The worst food.
EXTREMELY overpriced. Slow service. Unless you're starving avoid this place
D excellent food.
...absolutely beautiful space to dine. Exceeded every expectation of a dining experience in London on a recent visit!
The food portions are small, but tasty.
Salmon and Shepherds pie were both very good. The service is inattentive and not friendly. Atmosphere was beautiful. Overall, wouldn't recommend.
The Ivy -- the original -- is a truly wonderful experience
The Ivy -- the original -- is a truly wonderful experience with great cocktails and good food. The small room has not changed in decades but it is always full and lively. The service is always friendly and welcoming. An old favorite for me.
We were underwhelmed with the service and food here.
It definitely was a much smaller, Pre-theater type of restaurant. We could not get our waiter's attention much of the night. The food was good not great. Definitely better restaurants around the area.
