I last went to this hotel some 25 years ago. It was lovely then. But now; what has happened to the place? It has plummeted. Our experience was an anticlimax. The place is overrated and pretentious. Our two-night stay here was, to say the very least, a disappointment. The building is tired, the furniture is tired. Some of the younger staff are haughty. You do not get your paper with the tea you order for the morning wake-up call and they ‘only have the Times’ said with a smirk after asking you which paper you would like. Breakfast is a complete fiasco. No dietary alternative menus are available. Bored and yawning or self-important waiting staff. You get toast, wait for butter, toast gets hard and cold and you go off the idea. You order your breakfast. On the first day it arrived 45 minutes later. Cold porridge is not nice, dried banana was not expected, one quarter of a strawberry was edible. My eggs were cold though scrambled and my cured bacon was like something from a motorway café, cold, hard, burnt on one side and completely inedible. More toast was ordered and it arrived lukewarm and despite its request, no more butter arrived. All 4 of us had a similarly poor experience. I left the restaurant hungry and dissatisfied at around 10.30am, having arrived at 9am. Even the ‘Fortnum & Mason’ served tea was cold. I could not bring myself to join my party for breakfast on day two; I ate out later. They waited 1 hour and 20 minutes for their breakfasts to be served and again, they arrived too cold to eat. Too much theatrical faffing goes on in that restaurant and they seem to think they are delivering a silver service, but they are very much mistaken. At least they had the decency to remove the cost of the inedible breakfasts after a complaint was made. Our evening dining experience was not much of an improvement. Having agreed to a 7.30 table, we were directed to the bar instead. We gave our dining order here but of course you are now having drinks so everything takes an age. Canapes arrive, so you have another drink. Very clever. I do not usually drink before I eat. You eventually get taken to the dining room around an hour later. Dinner was of a good standard but it is excessively priced with small portions. You ask the supercilious waiting staff for a drink whilst dining and it gets forgotten. You remind them half an hour later and are given an excuse. You ask a third time. Dessert was by far the superior part of the meal, crepe suzette, cooked at the table to perfection by a very pleasant and capable young woman. Our room was tiny but unlike our friends’ room, was quiet. Our bed and pillows were the best features of this hotel. The room was too hot but it was clean and pleasant for an aged building where the windows are held closed with excessive paint. We did not eat at the hotel for our second evening. We did however have drinks when we returned after eating somewhere far superior and being served by waiters who were not so puffed-up to do their job properly. The night-time Bar Manager was clearly one of the few staff at the hotel who understood how to please his clientele and delighted us with interesting information about the history of the George, including that of the Hangman’s Beam, however, at £37 for two large inferior vodkas with tonic, we were left with a bitter taste. Will we be returning to the George of Stamford again? No.
