Good service
One would probably spend ~ $40+ per person so if you have 10pax, worth to get their private room (minimal spend of $400). Food is pretty interesting and nice. However, I would give the oven-baked volcano chicken a miss as I couldn't tell any difference. They have both a sit-down Chinese round table setting section as well as an outdoor pub-like area if you prefer.
Be the first to ReplyTerrible hygeine, feeling disgusted.
We went down on a Sat evening for dinner with the family. Right when we were about to start eating, we found that one of the spoons had a dead fly on it. This was absolutely revolting as it has been stuck there. We informed the manager of the fly and she merely responded with a "err ok" and proceeded to verify it with her fingers. She then replaced a spoon for us. We followed by checking the other spoons on the table and realized that one of the other spoons had a stain on it as well. This stain was a clear sign that they haven't done their part in cleaning the utensils properly as it could be easily wiped off.
As if that wasn't bad enough, during our dinner, we saw some ants crawling around the table top. The food was disappointing but I wouldn't be too critical on it. The management and service didn't seem apologetic it seemed as if it was a daily occurrence for them.
Later that evening, I had a terrible stomach ache and was suffering from diarrhea. I strongly do not recommend this place to anyone who appreciates basic hygiene on their dining area.
Meal with Family
Because of current covid, it seems restaurants are badly hit with less customers. It was a very quiet afternoon on a Sunday however, services and food quality at the restaurant are not being compromised. All dishes are served timely and portion just right for 3 of us. Only hope they allowed us to order the baked chicken on the spot (advance order needed); will try it on my next visitation then.
Be the first to ReplyHappy Occasion Turned Sour
We had our Lunar CNY Dinner at The Famous Kitchen on 18 Feb 2021. It was by far the worst dinner I have had in recent years.
The food that we had were below average, with the noodles being overly salty. The add-on Sweet and Sour Pork tasted like fried pork dipped in cheap ketchup sauce. Yu-Sheng fared highest but maybe because it was super sweet. Dessert was... speechless. We paid closed to S$450.00 for 5 pax, and are expecting better food with the high price tag.
Ambience wise, the place doesn't give off a restaurant vibe. Unluckily we were seated at the crossroad which leads to the kitchen, the main entrance and the dishwashing area. There were also a few large group drinking on our right. The whole ambience made me felt that I'm in those 7th-month Chinese dinner hosted by the temple. The entire place was rowdy, and my only impression was the lady boss enthusiastically going around those few tables to pour the drink
Apart from the above, the service and attitude triumphed to left me bewildered.
I have a long list to say about the restaurant But, I will pen down a few "memorable" ones below (though it won't be short either)
We hit some nails when we approached the service staff for food recommendation. When we asked, the service staff blankly replied, "chicken lor, fish lor". (Erm, okay. What insightful advice). We thanked her by the way, and we just read the menu ourselves before we decided on the CNY set menu.
While we discussed what to order, one of the service staff overheard that we wanted to order the Flaming Chicken. She suggested and offered to place the order for the chicken first as it takes a longer time to prepare. This is a nice gesture. But this nice gesture turned sour when her face blackened when we told her to hold on first as we are still deciding on the order. When we finally decided (which is the next five minutes), it takes a few calls to get her attention to place the Flaming Chicken order.
Besides getting the flaming chicken, we ordered the CNY set menu, which came with Raw Salmon Yu-Sheng. As we don't consume raw food, we asked if we could change the raw salmon. First, they offered to add on another packet of cracker. When we enquire further, they got their lady boss to attend to us instead.
Again we reiterated to the lady boss that we don't take raw food and asked if we could change the raw salmon. The lady boss suggested to switch to abalone and charged us the price difference. We agreed under the impression that she will change the salmon to abalone. However, when they served the yu-sheng, it came with both salmon and abalone. We highlighted to the service staff that we requested a salmon change to abalone and asked her to check with the lady boss. The next moment, she bluntly took the salmon away, then served us the dish. She didn't check nor asked; and not to mention, she held a black face throughout garnishing the Yu-Sheng dish. (This is supposed to be a HUAT and prosperous dish leh. I'm not expecting you to shower us with gold flakes, but at least a simple smile and blessing?)
Our mistake here was not insisting on the servicing staff to check with the lady boss. Because the restaurant charged us an extra $30 for the abalone because the order was placed for salmon and abalone Yu-Sheng (Huh?! What?!)
Next up, the flaming chicken. We placed the order before anything, but the chicken was still not ready even when we on the last course (i.e. waiting for dessert) into the CNY set menu. By then, it was already past 8.15 pm, almost an hour since we made the order (we had double confirmed the order for the flaming chicken with the lady boss when she attended to us for the Yu-Sheng).
Throughout the wait, we have flagged and asked at least three servicing staff and lady boss for an update. However, it seems like it's a common practice to ignore because no one came back to us. Not even the lady boss. The lady boss was just so engaged in pouring drinks for the large tables. Until, one came back and informed that they need another 16mins, and it's already past 8.30 pm.
(You must be kidding, right?)
Tired of waiting, we asked if we could cancel our order. The servicing staff supposedly went to ask the lady boss. And without surprise, she never came back to update/confirm.
Then, without any update for the chicken, they proceed to serve us dessert. First look at the dessert, which was served in those big plastic white bowl used in those Chinese temple dinner, wasn't too appetizing. The servicing staff then started to apportion the dessert into small serving bowls on our table. But before she served, or even pushed, the serving bowl to us, she began to clear the remaining used plates and bowls into the large dessert bowl. Those serving bowls are still "strategically" surrounding the big dessert bowl, fortelling the trouble that ensued - the used plates and dishes toppled over, and the waste/sauces spilled into our dessert.
The servicing staff apologised, and we were about to wave it off (the dessert doesn't look appealing anyway), and here comes the climax. While apologizing, she added that" 倒到一点点,捞起来就可以喝” (Translation: only spilled a little, scooped it out and you can drink it). And next, she actioned her words by scooping with a spoon (which I'm not sure is a clean or used spoon) and then served it to my brother. (Hey! Are you serious? Serving a contaminated food to a customer?!)
I'm flabbergasted. This is how they handled the contaminated food Infront of the customer. Imagine what kind of hygiene they have behind the closed door.
When I asked her to change the bowl of dessert, she responded by rolling her eyes and showed me faces before commenting that she will check with the kitchen. (I'm speechless already!!!) This time round, she came back and said that she would replace that one bowl (by the way, other bowl was not spared from the spill too). She took the bowl in question, headed to the dishwashing area, then to the kitchen, and then back to our table the next second. Given her hygiene level, I'm actually under the impression that she used back the same bowl without even washing it...
They have not updated us on the chicken too. When we flagged the lady boss for the last time, she then informed us that they had cancelled our order.
The happy occasion turned sour. The lady boss was aware of the above. The cashier also highlighted to her when we probe about the extra charges. Honestly, I was expecting that she comes to us offering some explanation. But apparently, we were not that important. She was busy serving those large tables and pouring drinks.
A "memorable" dinner indeed and I'm confident that we will not be coming back for a second one.
Great place to celebrate !
Quite a gem to be located far from town. Served warmly local cuisine that we all familiar with in Zhi Char. The price commanded quite high compare to the standard of the food. Came here multiple times and probably I have tried the Irish such and field KL Hokkien noodle the best! Don’t miss these 2 dishes. The fry chives with prawn was disappointing. Prawn is way over cooked and taste hard. The fry fermented tofu pork is too dry.. over frying ! The chili cockles was so so as it is too small for you to feel shiok especially the sauce used wasn’t prepared well. The fry salted egg fish skin can be improved as the skin not as crispy. The pork collar is rather so so and bland. The ouster way too big to enjoy and not briny! Disappointing wither the soon hock fish, overcooked and the meat kind too tough and dry. The plus point is free corkage and friendly owners would come to drink and entertain with you.
Be the first to ReplyDelicious food
We came here for lunch and the service was fast. We had the curry fish head, fried chicken, stir fry la la and fried hor fun. The food was delicious and had the ‘tze char’ taste.
Be the first to ReplyFast service, great food
Fourth time dining at this restaurant in the past year. Tried the flaming chicken for the first time, a bit pricey but it was superb! Moist, juicy and came served with tasty condiments. The garlic pork cutlet was good as well (had it every single time we visited), the lobster porridge was good but pricey ($240 for a bowl serves 8-10). My friends liked the lala. The horfun has plenty of wok hei, which was rare.
Be the first to ReplyLunch with family in private room
Food was tasteless and mediocre at best. They charge for absolutely everything exorbitantly. Service is good and attentive. Private room smelt like it hadn’t been aired in ages. We suspect the black pepper crab was spoilt because it smelt like urine.
Be the first to ReplyFood is distinctly average
The location of this restaurant is not very convenient and there is not much around it, which means you will need to make a special trip just to get here. A trip that is not worth it.
The food is average and you can easily do better by going to other places to eat.
Standard seems to have dropped somewhat
I have been here on several occasions. Service is generally ok. Parking is limited, so better to come earlier (they provide valet service though). Because I have come here on many times, I can tell you that the food quality can be inconsistent. Today’s standard appears to be not so good... maybe their main chef is deployed to their newer more “prestigious” branch?
We used to love their oatmeal prawns because the prawns were large, the oatmeal was fine, crispy, slightly spicy and didn’t stick to the shells. Today, everything is the opposite of my expectations (to be fair, it’s still good - in fact, above a typical kopitiam product).
I also got a simple hot plate venison and soup of the day. Rice was quite cold. It isn’t like that before.
One item we usually ordered but not tonight was yam duck in claypot - it’s REEEALLLY good, if the chef is the real deal and in a good mood...
So it’s four stars rating just because tonight happens to be crap. My mother says to give them a chance haha.
Good and reasonably priced
We stay nearby and come here on and off. The oatmeal prawns and braised duck with yam are consistently good - we almost always order these. Service is excellent. Parking is free.
Hidden gem for those who don’t live here - it’s worth driving here!!
