It was a Saturday night and we made the journey to the Arts District in DTLA (That’s “Downtown Los Angeles” for the abbreviation-impaired) for a nice dinner in an old factory. Gentrification wins again! Factory Kitchen was packed but our reservation allowed us to be seated quickly and start to pour over the many options available to us vegetarian folk on the Factory Kitchen menu. Here’s what we got.
“Ortolana” - A nice salad field greens, radish, dates, goat cheese, spring onions and a champagne vinaigrette. A well done salad that served its purpose
“Frittura” - Beer battered baby leeks and chickpea fritters. The star of our meal was definitely the chickpea fritters which were an awful lot like french fries in taste and luck. The chickpea battered leaks were like tempura. This dish was delicious though we did feel like it was missing a sauce of some kind to dip these babies in.
Mandilli di Seta - Thin handkerchief egg-pasta with basil and almond ligurian style pesto. This is their signature pasta dish…this was really good and maybe worth the trip to DTLA to get.
Cavoletti - Charred brussels sprouts served with ligurian olive oil and normally pancetta. Being vegetarians, we asked if they be okay without the pancetta and our server assured us it would be. In practice they really were missing something in terms of flavor, and they were overcooked.
There are a lot more vegetarian options to try including pizzas, other sides, and other items in two different categories of starters. So we definitely would come back and try more, though the only thing we described as “super special” of the four things that we had was the chickpea and leek fritters.
Also we noticed that they serve bread with an olive oil dipping sauce on request. We didn’t know that was an option until we saw it at other tables at the end of our meal. So if you like bread…be sure to ask for it.
