Lovely place
Lovely welcome as you enter and a great local atmosphere. I sampled some great ales brewed on site and had a lovely meal. The staff were friendly and the place had a lovely local vide about it. The venison was cooked superbly. A lovely little find

We managed to get a group booking, and had a fantastic evening of excellent food, excellent service and a really great space to enjoy together. Everyone was blown away by the quality of the food thank you

The impressively huge Yorkshire pudding was, I think, meant to make up for the lacklustre vegetables it was sitting on. Roast carrot and steamed broccoli were nice enough, but the braised red cabbage was too acidic, making the whole dish taste weird and the roast potatoes didn’t taste fresh, but reheated. Sticky toffee pudding was very good; however making that minuscule portion of accompanying ice cream stretch with each mouthful of pudding spoilt the treat. Service was good but overall it was definitely overpriced and positively underwhelming.
Be the first to ReplyDog friendly if you only want soup or chips!!!
We visited in June as a birthday treat. We stayed on a campsite in Hawkshead and walked to the pub ( approx 2 mile) with our two dogs looking forward to a lovely meal at the end of it. Only to be told that the only food availble outside or in the dog friendly area was only soup or chips even though the other menu was still being served in the other room!!! Doesnt take much effort to bring the food into the next room surely??? Obviously dont need the business if you can turn away a £150+ sale!! Left feeling very dissappointed and went to eat somewhere else where we felt welcome.
Be the first to ReplySoup only on the menu
Upon walking from holiday cottage with recommendations of being great for food. We found only a soup on the menu for outside and in bar area as we had a dog and could not eat inside the pub. Wanted to spend over £100 as celebration meal. Told short staffed. If they were busy they could pay more for staff. Can’t see management lasting as business survives on customers!
Be the first to ReplyMidweek evening meal
Disappointing pork based dish, menu said crackling instead it was fat shavings served with and overpowering gravy/sauce. Side order of chips were excellent although a little inappropriate for this meal. Overall disappointing experience will not be returning anytime soon.
Be the first to ReplyNice enough but expensive
Lunch was nice enough but, considering the price, it should be. There are plenty of places in the Lakes where you can get a nice meal and yet it will cost half as much. £120 for lunch for 2 people is pushing it. Consequently, it will be a while before we come back.

We love everything about The Duck that is why we keep going back and look forward to our next booking. Can assure you the staff are terrific and the atmosphere is local and perfect. The food is amazing , we travel the world and love coming back here.
Be the first to ReplyNot in rush to return anytime soon!
There was no atmosphere and no ambiance. Food was overpriced and bland; 2 course for £45 and £55 for a 3 course meal. We don’t mind paying more if it’s worth it. Unfortunately, we didn’t enjoy being there or the food itself, which was a shame because we were so looking forward to it. Staff were very inattentive and it felt like we were an inconvenience. To add a service charge was very cheeky and inappropriate in my view. Tipping staff is optional and I don’t understand why a customer will have to be inconvenienced in the presence of other diners to choose whether that should they opt in or out. Food portions were small and presentation wasn’t there at all. We have been here twice before but I’m sad to say this might be our last.

Booked The Drunken Duck well ahead for this years visit to The Lake District and glad we did as people were being turned away as fully booked. We went for Sunday lunch and it was excellent. Delicious imaginative starters and great beef roast. Lovely attentive staff and just a great way to enjoy a meal. Thoroughly recommended.
Be the first to ReplyGreat lite lunch
We found this pub by chance as we were looking for pubs with a fire around Windermere. Whilst I wish the fire kicked out a bit more heat, it was a lovely relaxed lunch. For lunch, as luck would have it, in the bar they only served the soup of the day (Mushroom and Tarragon on that day) so we went with that and a bowl of chips. It was a great lite lunch and we thoroughly enjoyed kicking back, relaxing and taking our time. I would definitely return for a meal but their room do look a bit expensive. We are returning in April but have opted to stay elsewhere, which is a shame, as I would love to try their breakfast!
Be the first to ReplyNice but overpriced
A lovely place, nice ambience and a mostly warm welcome apart from the sullen gentleman at the bar. So our Sunday lunch was very nicely cooked BUT not overly generous. For example if you order the parfait and crumpet, the crumpet is dolls size. The roast beef was nice but not outstanding and lacked a nice variety of vegetable accompaniments. Deserts were delicious. We eat at Michelin Guide pubs and restaurants regularly but this is the first time in a long time that we have felt, well a little ripped off. We do understand costs are rising and we don’t mind paying but in this case we didn’t think worth the money and wouldn’t visit again. Beautiful location though.

We went for a bar lunch and despite some of the negative reviews elsewhere we had a lovely experience. We shared a ham hock terrine for starter. We both had the fish and chips which were delicious, big portion super crispy batter and then shared a rice pudding and coffees. It was all delicious and the service was very good too. Thomas the barman/waiter was lovely, both helpful and efficient and had good knowledge of the ale selection. Another staff member(from Newcastle) was also very pleasant. Lovely log fire burning and super old pub charm. Thanks for a great lunch.

Wow, amazing Sunday lunch. The venison steamed pudding I had was absolutely gorgeous. The roast was fantastic. Desserts were fabulous. The beers, brewed on the premises, were delicious. Highly recommended, but remember to book!
Be the first to ReplyFine Dining in an atmospheric pub
Four of us had dinner at the Drunken Duck . The food was delicious and it seemed like fine dining with great portions ,at a sensible price point. We had three courses and all were memorable with my pork dish main as a stand out. Service was great and though modernised the DD retains its character and warmth from way back! Looking forward to our next dinner there!

Cheerful, wonderful staff greeted us after our epic journey! Food was delicious and delivered with a smile! Goes without saying, not much can beat a great pint in a great pub in the Lakes. We’re looking forward to coming back here tomorrow after our not so small ramble over hill and river! Thank you!
Be the first to ReplyCountry pub with its own brewery and rooms so perfect
Stayed for one night room 12 , ticked every box . Good beer , nice food , chilled and relaxing vibe. Staff very hard working and friendly. Will come again soon hopefully. Menu not extensive but well chosen and not pretentious well presented and cooked.
Be the first to ReplyGreat food in a lovely relaxed atmosphere
We had dinner here and ate 2 courses with a shared dessert to finish. The service was impeccable from the minute we arrived and the food arrived swiftly but not too quickly. The combination of flavours was delightful and the food was attractively presented. We ate the smoked salmon and the cheese soufflé to start followed by the pork and the stonebass as mains. The sauces really contributed to the flavour of the food and we really enjoyed our meal. Excellent value for money, we have paid a lot more for a lot less flavour.
Be the first to ReplyExpensive & poor bar food selection
Myself and three friends called in for a drink & a light lunch but we came away disappointed. They don’t do sandwiches so we had to settle for the only options which were soup & chips. The soup was delicious & the chips very good but it was all a bit expensive. Four pints of cask beer, four bowls of soup & two bowls of chips came to £58.
Be the first to ReplyAvoid if you have dietary needs
The main course was very nice. If you have any intolerances this is one of those places that just removes items from the menu rather than swap or change things slightly so be aware.
Pleasant enough but the barkeep does not know his own ales one was in fact wheat free.
Used to be far far better
Used to be far better!
Firstly let me say the food was perfect. We went for the food and weren’t disappointed. BUT the service was very casual and didn’t match the cost.
The decor of the bar is still lovely but what’s happened to the restaurant? Bare plaster walls. Trying too hard to be cool and failing. I used to LOVE the dark understated elegance of the dining room. It used to be a cosy snug of perfection where you felt that the luxury or your surroundings matched the food. Now the food stands proud of the decor by a good head.
As for the toilets…chavvy pink/grey thing gone wrong. Again, trying too hard.
Now lots of people might base their visit on one or two visits but I’ve been regarding it as a treat destination for 30 years and now only the food would drawn me back and not the staff or ambiance. Pity. Will come back but not as excitedly as before
Disappointing overnight at Barngates
We stayed at the Drunken Duck for about the tenth time recently, often two nights but the time one night only. Dinner remains excellent quality with good choice if perhaps marginally expensive. However the most recent price increase means the accommodation is no longer good value. Our relatively small room is now priced at £200 B&B whereas our much better appointed hotel in Rosthwaite for the previous two weekend nights was less than £150. There are few ‘extras’ (no coffee/tea in the room, no bottled water) and the one extra that made a difference, the scrumptious afternoon tea, has also been discontinued with Covid as the excuse. I feel this is somewhere that has lost its customer focus and is now simply prepared to fleece its loyal clients. I can’t see us staying there again.

Not Really Impressed At All. Vastly over Priced for what it was. Had the Sunday with alleged sirloin of beef. Vegetables were nicely cooked and the meal was well presented. However the beef was watery, fatty and tasteless tbh. The pudding, rice pudding, plum and ice cream just about edible. Certainly not worth the £35 for two course price tag. Service was good and the servers were pleasant.
Very disappointed and ripped off. Needless to say I wont be rushing back
Awful attitude
My wife was met at the door by presumably the owner, a rather haughty lady, who when asked “do you have any availability for two?” Was told no we don’t.
A member of staff directly behind her said, “Yes we do have space.”
The woman then said but we are not starting until 1 o’clock!
A rather dismissive reply at which point my wife walked away.
Having been staying earlier at the Dorchester and dining at Alain Ducasse 3 Michelin Star restaurant I was a bit taken aback by this woman’s attitude to my wife.
A report is being sent to Michelin Guide.
Outstanding
A really excellent welcome and beautiful room. Couldn’t fault any part of the stay. Warm and welcoming and when we asked for last minute meeting room for an urgent meeting online we were given a beautiful room and coffee - such a relaxing break. Outstanding
