Too much pepper!!
We stayed in wells for the night after our wedding and it was amazing so we came back for the burger .. we were slightly disappointed as it seems they have put far too much pepper in the burger . It was over cooked and way too over seasoned with pepper

Love this old 15th century hotel .. the sort of place we like. The staff were very friendly and helpful . Very good breakfast with a good selection to choose from Idea location to explore wells with many of the sights right on the door step . They have a market Wednesday & Saturdays right outside the front door.., they do start setting up about 5 30 am but we could hardly hear them . We will definitely visit again no problem .

This is definitely the worst place I have ever stayed. We booked a double room bringing our little dog with us . We were put into the most appalling room. The decor was extremely dated as was the furniture. Worse was the filthy carpet , stained and smelt. The floor tiles in the bathroom were cracked. When I emerged from my 3inch bath of water ( the tap just dribbled) I put on socks to walk on the carpet as I didnโt want my bare feet to make contact with the grime. The bed was small and uncomfortable. The pillows were thin. There were cobwebs in the corner of the room. The food was ok . The staff were pleasant.the service was good. My husbands full English breakfast was rather sparse. He didnโt want egg or beans , he was given one small sausage , one piece of bacon, half a hard tomato and one mushroom. The receptionist deducted the price of our dog from our bill ยฃ15.00 ( no facilities for dogs in rooms ) our bill still came to ยฃ135.00. Absolute disgraceful . Keep away from room 6 . If you dare stay.
Be the first to ReplyGreat weekend stay
Arrived at the crown on Saturday afternoon around 1pm, we knew check in wasnโt till 3pm, but were informed that rooms were ready (pleasant start). The rooms are comfortable, but a little quirky, which is to be expected from a building that dates from 1450. If you want a modern hotel, then try the generic hotel chains, this one has lots of character and charm. We quickly grabbed a drink from the bar, which was busy, but service was spot on. After we completed our walking tour of Wells ( Highly recommended) we settled in the bistro for dinner. We were a party of 8, but they had no problem accommodating us. Service was quick and friendly. The menu choice was good and had something for the vegan/ vegetarians in our group. All food was hot and tasty. Prices are what you would expect, considering the current economic climate. Breakfast was continental and a choice of cooked breakfast options. All in all, a very pleasant stay, in a city centre location (Wells is so peaceful, apart from the Sunday morning bell ringing, which I personally enjoyed).

I went to Wells for a stroll and fancied a lovely traditional roast dinner, so we decided to stop at the crown. This was by far the complete opposite of that. the below information details my experience. The Food: The potatoes looked as if they'd been part boiled and thrown in the oven for 5 mins (they were terrible) The rubbery pork seemed to have been thrown in an oven and pulled out prematurely (what is crackling again???) The 'homemade gravy' was nothing short of dishwater. The cauliflower cheese was sub-standard, although slightly reminiscent of a packet sauce.... The Yorkshire pudding looked the part, however it must have been made a day before and warmed up (poorly) pre-service. the parsnips and carrots were delightful however they were also cool to the touch. The Service: the staff welcomed me in as expected. then they refused to serve me my drink until i found myself a table (just why? felt forced to be honest). So i found my own table (unaccompanied), took my jacket off, placed it on the back of my chair and headed for the bar. I suddenly was able to buy myself a drink (and food, of course)!!! Whilst ordering my lunch, the staff behind the bar seemed more interested in gossiping about their private lives more than helping and assisting customers enjoy their Sunday afternoons. It seemed to lack even an ounce of professionalism. Anyway, i walked back to my table to enjoy my much awaited pint of Guinness, which was delightful. Now this is the shocking part; roughly 4 gulps in, my food was on the table - like seriously??? having ordered it a mere 5 minutes ago, i became very concerned. i had a thought to myself " oh dear, here we go". How this was even allowed to get out of the kitchen is beyond me. And the worst part? - they're charging people almost ยฃ20 for this plate of disappointment. Their entire menu looked way over priced and i can only imagine how the rest of the food is presented/tastes. This place has nothing on Toby Carvery (i wish i was joking). My advice? Please spend your hard earned money elsewhere for decent food & hospitality.
Be the first to ReplyA good discovery in the heart of Wells
After a late morning of shopping at the Wells market, we dropped in to The Crown for lunch. Very kind and attentive staff member Miranda seated us at a nice table in the restaurant by a window looking out to the market beyond. The sea bass was one of the best I have tasted. Suggestions of local beer were spot on. Definitely going to return.
Be the first to ReplyGreat bar BUT
This is about the bar only, not the restaurant or hotel. This place is a really great bar. Comfy, good range of beer, drinks etc with a couple of attentive and helpful bar staff. But seems some others, staff from other areas, happy to spoil ones enjoyment. Loud chat and swearing from kitchen/preparation area then one (Jason maybe) migrated to the bar and proceeded to watch noisy videos on his phone overriding the good selection of bar music. Great pint, good wine, pleasant bar staff, good music and atmosphere BUT...................
Be the first to ReplyGreat pub lovely setting and delicious food. We recommend the mussels- best we have had for ages
Lovely evening at The Crown between Christmas and New Year. At first we thought prices were a bit steep so just had a main course but mussels and Thai curry were both so delicious and good sized portions. Service was great and we will be back very soon!
