The emperor's new clothes.
While I like the idea of this restaurant, the food did not live up to my high expectations. We had a lot of food and most of it was overpowered by brightness that is too acidic . The crab ravioli was a bit too al dente and the barbecue oyster was just too tart. The trout gravlax was overpowered by the passion fruit sauce and berries. I would recommend the polenta and salad with mortadella but that's about it. Disappointed :-( Good service ambiance was nothing special

4.5/5 Ambiance: 5/5 fantastic date night spot. Intimate and beautiful set up. Not good for large groups though. Service: 4.5/5 everything was great but a lady came up to us to ensure we had ordered and it was almost like she was stressed that we hadn't been helped and was a little frantic. But other than that everything was great. Food: 4/5 Highly recommend the anchovy tower - I enjoyed everything on the tower. It was fun tasting a few different oysters from different locations as they add were different. The anchovy toast was also really good- wouldn't recommend if you don't like oily fish though. Steak tar tar was very good - nice flavors and good texture balance. The Dungeness crab dish was actually pretty disappointing. The pasta was too undercooked and the sauce was a bit overpowering to the crab. The deviled egg wasn't that memorable either. Overall I would recommend anchovy bar for those who enjoy seafood other than just fish- it is on the more expensive side so is great for a special occasion or date night !

Stuart Brioza and Nicole Krasinki's restaurant group do not miss. The Anchovy Bar is exactly how it sounds, an intimate and posh bar serving the best anchovies in the city. A perfect spot to pregame and nibble on light snacks before heading to your 8 pm dinner reservation. The 1/2 dozen anchovies and chip n dip are my usual orders. The 1/2 dozen arrive on a board complete with anchovies and an assortment of toppings. During my last visit, the board had goat cheese, rosemary marcona almonds, giardiniera, microgreens, and scallion crackers. The pairings often change so expect different accompaniments. The board gives you the option to create the perfect anchovy cracker by utilizing different combinations. You can add more anchovies to increase punginess and umami. Pair it with the milky gaminess of goat cheese, the sweet and sour of the giardiniera, the crunchiness of almonds, and the crispiness of the scallion crackers. Voila, perfection! Oh, and for the chip n dip, trout roe and smoked black cod, paired with buttermilk ramp potato chips. Although a simple app, they do a fantastic job of elevating this dish. Extra chips, please! For drinks, we ordered two different orange wines. Excellent service from our server, he poured each wine in two separate glasses so we didn't have to share glasses. Make reservations since their space is tiny.

We stopped by for drinks since we were seeing a show at the Fillmore. We didn't order any food so this review is purely based on the drinks. We were seated outside under the heated lamps which was quite nice. We ordered 3 lagers (helles) and to my surprise when the beers came they were served on a cocktail glass. So we got a half of a beer for what normally would be the price of a full beer. What's up with that?! Would not recommend for pre drinks.

My friends and I had a wonderful experience at the restaurant. We ordered six menus (including desserts), and our favorite dishes were the Focaccia with whipped butter, Carbonara, and Cheesecake. The wine pairing was great, and we appreciated being able to sample it before ordering. The service was excellent, and the cozy atmosphere of the place made everything even more remarkable. I highly recommend this restaurant to others and will revisit it.
Be the first to ReplyA great spot if you like anchovies.
Mostly doing 3 stars since 3 out of the 5 dishes we got were misses for me, but the bay shrimp chirashi was so good. I loved the make your own hand roll theme to the dish.

Be the first to ReplyMade a reservation a week before for an 8:00 pm reservation.
We had a light snack before so we're fine with just the seafood tower. It's typically made for two but they are able to make it for three, for 1.5x the price. Everything was fresh and flavorful. Definitely recommend getting a side of chips (or two) to dip in the different spreads on top. They have a broad selection of wines and the staff was great at helping us pick a glass based on our preferences. Dessert was a generous portion and easily split by the three of us. This is a great spot to bring someone visiting to try a spread of seafood.
Be the first to ReplyWhat a fun and unique restaurant.
As an anchovy fan, I just had to check it out (plus I was going to The Fillmore to see a show and it's right around the corner). I'd reserved a bar seat but ended up sitting outside as I liked that better. The heaters made it quite comfortable. The staff is friendly and professional. My server took great care of me. The restaurant's menu is family style, meant to share. There's also an option for half orders, which I really appreciated, since I was dining alone (and I'm a light eater). I started with a glass of their Brut Rose from Italy and a half order of the Cantabrian Anchovies, Focaccia & Truffle Butter. Yum! The flavors worked very well together. The anchovies are very rich and when you add the truffle butter, this is a decadent dish. Also, I found it interesting that the focaccia was sourdough, which I've never had before. I enjoyed the Brut Rose very much but I think one of their white wines would have gone better with the dish (my mistake). Next, I did a half order of the Dungeness Crab Raviolis. I liked the addition of shaved fennel. I wasn't completely wowed by this dish. The crab was fresh. The pasta itself was a bit too al dente for me. I perfectly paired this with their Chenin Blanc from Carmel Valley. To me, if you find a fine Chenin Blanc on a wine list, it's a no brainer; very food friendly. For dessert, I tried caviar for the first time in a very unique way. It was served on a shortbread cookie with some honeycomb. It's a small size but OMG, what a fun, tasty bite. The caviar itself was not at all salty, which I was expecting. I felt a bit of euphoria and I now understand why people like caviar. If you're looking for a unique dining experience, this is the place.

My type of place There are really special dishes on the menu. Some seafood and some items that the chef probably just likes and is inspired by. Must try: - bay shrimp aguachile a must! - focaccia & mortadella - steak tartare - potato chips - lamb entree - oyster shooters - duck schnitzel Not so amazing: - the crab ravioli I think needs a little work. The sauce needed salt.
Be the first to ReplyI would give this a 3.
5/5. The service was good but the food was just okay. Not a lot of the menu items caught my eye and the things I did order (the duck and anchovies platter) were just fine. Don't think I'll make the trip out to the city for it but wouldn't refuse if someone invited me for dinner there
Be the first to ReplyThis place is my go to.
The food is consistently good and the menu is always updated with new dishes. Most notable is the is the friendly, kind staff. The Anchovy Bar is a gem.

they always get you don't they? With a cool interior, fantastic wine, and wonderful articles in every major food publication in the city, I thought Anchovy bar would be a slam dunk. And to be honest, loved the vibe, loved the wine, even loved the anchovy platter, but the rest of the food was such a disappointment. It's worth saying that I am obsessed with oysters. It's a second thought that I'll order them because I rarely go to a seafood spot without them. I love all types regardless of region, size, or accoutrements. Why were the oysters here so bad though? It was a tour along the pacific coast of some of the worst flavors I've had. Idk if it's the farm, the freshness, or the selection, but 5/6 types that I had didn't taste right. Selection is important in an oyster platter, and 4/6 tasted incredibly similar. This platter had me in an osyterstential crisis, so I would avoid if possible. The anchovy platter was great. You got three little sauces to pair with 6 anchovy fillets. The bread was crunchy and paired well with each sauce. All around incredible flavors, very fresh, and unique. It's in the name so I'm happy they got this right. The trout roe dip was good, but kinda tasted like every trout dip that is popping up across the city. Smoked trout is the new smoked salmon, and the dips are everywhere. Why get this one when you could get any other? The roe was nice but didn't really expand upon adding cream cheese to a tin of herring and calling it the same thing. The seafood stew: :(. It's really the only thing I feel about it. It was cooked so well, the salmon was perfectly melty and the mussels were great but please chill with the seasoning. I love nothing more than the divine flavors that come from the water rendered from cooking shellfish. But if you put 10 tbsps of curry powder in with the seafood then it's gonna make that flavor impossible to find. All in all a dish with tons of potential that was ruined by over spicing and missing the subtly and flavor of the seafood within. All in all, anchovy bar fits into the same skin crawling aesthetic driven restaurants that are devouring the culinary scene of San Francisco. They buzz, they flash, they entice with beautiful interiors and fantastic wines, but are they really making good food? The answer is once again, disappointingly, no.
Be the first to ReplyAMAZING place! I like this place much better than the other
AMAZING place! I like this place much better than the other 2 Michelin-starred places owned by the same people (state bird, the progress). The food is innovative but not too over the board. The duck Milanese is a real highlight, so so delicious. The anchovy toast is so yummy with the 3 types of sauces. The bone marrow tastes great with mushrooms. The miso clams are amazing, some of the best clams I've had. The dessert was heavenly - we were confused at first as to what is a nori arlette but it was so so good, I'm still dreaming about it. Service was pretty decent, and ambiance is good.

State Bird Provisions is my favorite restaurant in SF so when the same owners opened up Anchovy Bar, you know I had to try it out. It was good! We had oysters, the anchovy toast was good, but my favorite things were the clams and seafood stew. The uni ceviche was wayyy too acidic. The ambiance is fun and if you like seafood then this place is for you. Service was great and it's relatively easy to find street parking and to get a reservation here a couple of weeks in advance.

My partner took me here for my birthday last Friday after seeing a segment on them on Eater's YouTube channel and we had a great time!!We took our server's advice and got 1-2 items per menu section, and every dish was SO cussing good. I think my favorite was the roe (salty, umami) and my partners' was the ceviche (acidic, sweet) although I'd order any dish we had again in a heartbeat. Ambiance was cool + hip but friendly and approachable and the service was awesome. We will absolutely be back for anchovy season in the summer
Be the first to ReplyService was good, beverages were good, the plates and cups
Service was good, beverages were good, the plates and cups were beautiful, but the food was pricey and didn't wow us. Maybe it's not anchovies season so they were all canned anchovies. Considering anchovies is their namesake, I thought the anchovies would be highlighted better in their dishes. Instead there were a small number of fillets per dish and their flavors often lost in the other ingredients.

This definitely goes on our list of favorite restaurants in the City! We ordered the 1/2 dozen anchovies Don Bocarte (when in Rome), "steak" tartare, radish & bottarga toast, western addition oyster (broiled with Sambal butter), cauliflower, scallop ceviche, and bone marrow. Everything was delicious but that bone marrow was out of this world. And don't pass on the anchovy sundae (real, candied anchovies!) it's like garlic ice cream - you have to try it once. The place is TINY so make reservations and dress warm if you're outdoors.

If you're a huge fan of anchovies, this is definitely the place to go. As someone who's never tried anchovies before, it's really an acquired taste!Knowing that the owners also own State Bird Provisions around the corner, a restaurant we love, we thought why not give Anchovy Bar a shot! We had a reservation for 5:15pm to celebrate Valentine's Day.We were seated fairly quickly. We ordered 5 items on their menu: dozen oysters, half dozen anchovies platter, caviar, marinated cauliflower, and the roasted bone marrow. We had tried the sweet water oysters from Hog last year, so we stuck with the remaining on the list. Usually I like my oysters more on the sweeter side and less briny, but my favorite ones were the more briny oysters from British Columbia! I was a bit surprised that when we were still working on our last pair of oysters, the staff were ready to take the dish off our table... the oysters were in our hands! I was afraid that we were just going to be another set of folks that they were pushing to eat ASAP like other reviews stated. Unfortunately, I found out I'm not a huge fan of anchovies. My SO loved this dish, but I found the fish rather too salty for my liking. The caviar was delish! The tartness of the guava with the saltiness of the caviar were such a balance of perfection!Skip the marinated cauliflower. I could barely eat it because it was overly powered by the cumin. The bone marrow was a good dish to end the meal with. Comforting and flavorful. Probably one of the best dishes of the night!Overall, if you haven't been here before, check it out! If you are a fan of anchovies, even better! Service got better throughout the night, but it could possibly have been because we ordered the most expensive dish on their menu.
Be the first to ReplyGood here is very good.
Lots of little plates that I will not call tapas. Fresh and creative. Why two stars? As my dining friend and I were deciding what to get, I asked the server to bring us s dozen oysters to start, by the time they arrive we will have our order settled. No, said the server, I won't. The chef wants the entire order at once.Come again? Sorry, I could have sworn I was the paying customer. So know if you go here, only the chef counts. No stepping out of bounds with your "preferences".Will NOT return.

3.5 starsI love the concept of Anchovy Bar - some wine and small bites in an intimate space - but I can't really figure out when I would come back here. None of the food stood out to me as something I would have to come back for, and the vibe is not quite a special occasion spot, but it's a bit too pricy to be a casual catch up spot with friends ($60 pp post tax/tip with no drinks). We got:Anchovy toast - local anchovy with pea and fava hummus over a sesame encrusted toast. Tasty.'Cazuela de Anxoves' w/ Fried Onions & Quail Eggs - I liked the way the quail egg on the bottom added a creaminess / richness to the fried onions, but the dish just felt too heavy with all the fried onions - people left the dinner hungry yet we had a bunch of this dish left over. Oyster bar mixed dozen - The oysters are very good and each kind is quite different, although oysters are never quite worth that much $$ to me (at $40 for a dozen).Summer corn salad - This was a surprise highlight - I loved the sweet summer corn paired with the peaches and topped with a light sprinkling of parmesan & basil. Light and refreshing.Smoked trout roe 'Chip & Dip' - I wanted more brininess from the trout roe, and I actually didn't love the mixing in of nori with the potato crema since it broke up the creaminess with this papery texture.Smoked mussels - It's a tiny dish and I honestly can't really recall how the mussels tasted. Forgettable.Brokaw avocado sticky rice - Creamy avocado and aioli on top was quite delicious, I just am not a big fan of sticky rice.Strawberry & ricotta semifreddo (with burnt meringue, candied walnuts & apple balsamic) - The dessert was the highlight of the meal. The burnt meringue was a nice textural contrast to the semifreddo, which was studded with candied walnuts and mixed with sweet strawberries. There's a lot going on in this dessert but it somehow mostly works. One of my friends said it was the best dessert they've had this year.
Be the first to ReplyQuite expensive, with some great and some bad aspects.
Most of the main dishes were wonderful, especially the broiled Western Addition oysters and the harissa-cured king salmon, and the wine list is varied and superb. A few dishes were simply bland, including the ceviche.Menu items that are not worth ordering: the potato chips (which could have come from a bag) and particularly the desserts. The donut holes weren't especially tasty nor even fully cooked and a few blackberries on top didn't make up for the fact that even Dunkin Donuts makes them better, and the strawberry shortcake thing was ordinary. The biggest disappointment was feeling rushed by the staff. They made it clear they wanted to turn the table, even though we weren't dawdling. It really diminished the whole meal.

Got the 1/2 dozen Anchoas Don Bocarte and Meyer Lemon-Miso Clams and shared it with my friend. The whipped butter was so smooth and creamy. Really enjoyed the anchovies, but would probably pass on the clams if I ever go again.

If I could pay rent to live in their supply closet and get to eat here every day, I would. The anchovies in purgatory are divine. The negroni is perfection. I don't remember the names of the other dishes I had but everything was super fresh, super flavorful. The servers were attentive but not distracting, and gave excellent wine pairing recommendations. It's on the pricy side (at lest for my budget), but even with all of the incredible restaurants we have in this city, this is where I want to splurge for any special occasion that comes up. I can't get back soon enough.
Be the first to ReplyA good place for seafood.
Anchovies are definitely the main attraction. There's indoor and outdoor seating. Inside is a tight squeeze but you won't be 'packed like sardines.'1/2 dozen anchovies at $20 was a delightful appetizer. The seasoned butter was a nice complement to the perfectlytoasted sesame bread. Summer corn salad at $10 was creamy, crunchy, and a burst of sweetness from the delicately sliced peaches. The basil was a nice touch.Anchovies "in purgatory" at $19 was another simple dish focused on the little fishies. The sansho peppers gave a little heat. I should have asked for a side of lemon to squeeze over top.Spiced tomatoes stew at $30 was wonderful. It's smokey, savory, and rich. It's served with a few pieces of bread, but you'll want some more to wipe the dish clean. The dishes are creative and shines a light on a silver underdog in the seafood game. Don't sleep on this tasty spot.
