Exceptional culinary expression
We are generally underwhelmed by the food in OC but this place absolutely delivers and is most definitely worthy of its Michelin Star. Hands down, the best food we have had in Orange County, Taco Maria had been on my radar since I'd heard Jonathan Gold describe their tortillas in mouth watering detail. At times, we would try to get a reservation, unsuccessfully. We finally made it in for a belated anniversary celebration last September. We had a corner table on the patio and appreciated that staff wore masks and that BLM was written in the window. They wished us a happy anniversary and brought us some rose bubbles to celebrate, a thoughtful touch that goes a long way. The Manager / Sommelier gave us the rundown on the wine list and shared our affinity for boutique wines. He recommended a favorite bottle of his to accompany the meal nicely and we were pleased. It was a Rhone Valley Syrah that perfectly complimented without overpowering, despite our initial apprehension. We started with the Aguachile, which was light and refreshing. Our entree consisted of the Chuleta de Puerco (Pork Chop) and Arrachera (Wagyu Hanger steak), and as perfect and delicious as they were, they were really a vehicle for those mouth watering blue corn tortillas. On the side we had, Nopalitos (marinated cactus), Curtidos (burnt jalapeño, carrot and red onion) and Aguacate Tatemado (charred avocado w/ toasted cumin, hazelnut oil and grey salt...WOW!). The meal was divine. We were too full for dessert and nothing really spoke to us on the menu, which made that decision easy. The service was impeccable...until it wasn't. There seemed to be a shift change and service fell off substantially. I debated dropping a star for this but the food was just too good that I decided to stick with five. I do hope they improve upon this, as one would expect more from a Michelin Star restaurant. Regardless, we will definitely be back and are looking forward to the return of the tasting menu.

Taco Maria is one of my favourites; it’s one of the few restaurants to which I return year, after year. It’s a Michelin star restaurant that serves alta California cucina. And for the first time post-COVID, they returned to their four-course prix fixe ($85/person), with a choice of two options for each course. This is really an awesome move for diners, you get the best of their offerings; and if you take a friend along, I’d recommend getting one of each course and sharing. The food is gorgeous & delicious; not over-handed or heavy, but spiced just right. Some dishes were bright and light; others (meat course) were rightfully substantial. Taco Maria books quickly, so be sure to book promptly. Plentiful free, parking in lot. Service was friendly, but occasionally slow once they were full.
Be the first to ReplyAn amazing travel in a modern Mexican food,
An excellent experience even after Covid. Food and drinks are always surprising but astonishing. With friends, working dinner in small committee… it is a must go.

Third time is a charm: after two unsuccessful attempts to dine here, we finally landed an inside table for an early dinner on a warm week night. Our dinner started auspiciously with a sublime Caesar salad. In taste and presentation, it was unlike any Caesar I had encountered, this definitely was one of the best! The two segundo entrees (bass and pork chops) were equally well-plated and superbly delicious. The culinary accolades are well-deserved. While my dining companion enjoyed building her tacos with the complimentary blue corn tortillas and two accompaniments of Aquacate Tatemado (half of a charred avocado) and Curtidos (pickled jalapeños, carrots & red onion), I felt they did little to enhance my dining pleasure on top of the generously-portioned yummy entrees. In fact they seemed rather overpriced . Service was on point throughout and we felt well cared for.

This was an unexpected treat for a little place in shopping courtyard. The food was absolutely fantastic! We had the mushroom and scallop appetizer, striped bass and all three veggie dishes ( grilled avocado, grilled peppers and carrots and delicious smoky black beans) with amazing blue corn tortillas! Ended with an amazing date cake with vanilla crème. An absolute pleasure and will be back soon.

I'm biased. I LOVE/loved Taco Maria...even before it received a Michelin star. I made reservations for my bday in August and when hubby couldn't go, I kept the res and went with a friend...and also made another res to go w/him at another time. My favourites? The aguachile (an elevated ceviche), their fish/pescado, arrachera/wagyu hangar steak and the respado de melon which is a very light and refreshing dessert which is made from melon ice and a fluffy cream which turns out to be yogurt. Normally, I dislike corn tortillas and beans...but ALWAYS clean the plate here, bc they're freshly hand made. The seating is currently patio only. Reservations for the weekends are difficult to come by and there's plenty of free parking at the venue. Service is top notch, professional, friendly & helpful. While the vibe is a bit casual, it's also a bit upscale. Birthdays come with a birthday card, signed saying, 'thank you for choosing us'. Prices approximate $100/person (before tax & tip) at a minimum (which I think is the lower levels of Michelin one-stars). What made it next level for me, was when I asked if Chef Carlos Salgado was available for a fangirl pic, he made himself available.

I was a little taken a back that this is a Michelin star restaurant. The service was nowhere what is expected, the food was average.
Be the first to ReplyMexican with a REAL twist
I consider myself a "Foodie", so of course I had to try Taco Maria's. I'll get straight to the point. Do not go if you think you're going to get some great traditional Mexican food. You're going to be disappointed. But, if you're adventurous, and want to taste something unique and delicious, this is your place. I strongly recommend the quesadilla (you can split this), pork belly and hanger steak tacos. That would be a lot to eat for anyone, so bring an appetite. Reservations are a must unless you come right at 11am. Enjoy

Simply amazing. Non-pretentious Michelin starred dining experience. Every...single....thing was delicious. My parents, husband and I dined last night, and all of us raved the whole way home. The tasting menu is inventive and delicious. I can't wait to go back. The staff was beyond nice and so helpful. Can't wait to go back!

It's a bit of a challenge to find but well worth the effort. Two tacos are more than filling and are quite the treat. No reservations so come early!

A stunning meal, and we were having Sunday brunch. Every course was excellent — and one was pancakes (simply the BEST pancakes I’ve ever tasted!). The last course - a spin on a seafood eggs Benedict, featured an amazing grilled shrimp prep, a delicious hollandaise sauce, perfectly poached egg — simply fabulous. We discussed the menus posted for ‘other’ meals, and realized this place is a “must” for future meals. Michelin Star — very deserved! First rate eating!

This restaurant lives up to their wonderful food reviews. I recently had lunch and found their tacos were excellent. Also recommend their Caesar salad.

We had dinner again at the Chef's counter a few weeks ago. Superb as always.
We finally went back for the a la carte taco Tues night, but we have to wait before submitting that review.
Finally!!!
i had read/heard about Taco Maria and chef Carlos Salgado for several years, and finally was able to put everything together to make a trip to TM for lunch. My 70th bd was late July, and my daughter & my sister-in-law were also able to join me for a celabratory meal. Taco Maria & my bd! Score!!
Since they don't take reservations, we made plans to meet up just before they opened-close to 11 am. It was going to be a warm day in OC, so i was glad that we ended up with a table in the shade of the patio. The angle of the patio (i believe) gave it shade for most of mid-day dining. Inside would of been pretty warm, being close to the ovens.
i was so excited to finally be there, i ended up ordering a bit more food than i would normally. Started with the Caesar (which was excellent!!!), then had a bite of the quesdilla that we ordered to share. Then the tacos-2 per order. You can pick two different or two of the same. i liked to be able to try the fish and the pollo-both were fabulouso!! Everything i expected, and more. The house margarita was wonderful also.
When you read about, oh say, a movie, a book or a restaurant and the hype is how wonderful it is, and when you do read the book, or, go see the movie, or try the restaurant, you come away disapointed because your expectations were built up so high? This DID NOT happen at Taco Maria!!! i can't wait to come back, but maybe scale back the gluttony part. i would of been very happy just with the tacos and margarita!
Jessa was our very kind and capable server. Saw that we were always taken good care of.
Highly recomend a visit, and i truely can't wait to return.
