Sushi-san Chicago Reviews from The Last Year
Sushi-San is a solid Japanese restaurant/bar! Specializing
Sushi-San is a solid Japanese restaurant/bar! Specializing in fresh sashimi, sharing plates and fun Japanese-inspired cocktails, I love that this spot has an easy going vibe with great food and drinks. My hubby came here for lunch and another time for dinner and both times, we enjoyed the food and received good service. Great place to meet friends or for a cozy date night spot. Their nigiri sushi is delicious, especially their scalp and toro. Super buttery and fresh. I also tried their cilantro margarita and it was really nice. Definitely check them out. We'll be back when we're in the Chicago area again!
Amazing experience! Despite being fully booked, they let us
Amazing experience! Despite being fully booked, they let us squeeze in the bar seating on the terms that we would be out in an hour. This was no problem thanks to the attentive and quick service! Our server, George, was wonderful and made sure we got everything we wanted without making us feel rushed. Started off with the Thank you, Enjoy #4 to drink- we loved the little to-go box it came in & the drink itself was actually great! I had the seaweed salad to start, and I will say that it's very different than a typical seaweed salad. Unless you like the texture of large seaweed leaves, maybe skip this one. The rest of the meal nothing short of excellent, as the Zuke Salmon Nigiri was to die for. I loved the bluefin tuna and avocado roll as well- super buttery and flavorful. When I come back, I may just get an 8 piece Zuke Salmon Nigiri because it was that good. Ended the night with sake bombs (which normally i find pretty gross if i'm being honest) yet these were actually delicious? We were shocked by how enjoyable the sake bombs ended up being. Overall, definitely a bustling place with warm, cozy, lighting and cheery staff. Can't wait to come back!
Finally a great sushi place downtown.
Enjoyed the lunch special here recently and was absolutely delighted by the food, atmosphere and service. As an extra treat for myself, I ordered a couple of pieces of exceptional unagi nigiri. Check it out for yourself, you'll be glad you did.
Great Sushi spot with a lot of space.
Fish was fresh, you get a ton for the money, great flavor. I got the Mega and it was a really good value, for one person it was a lot to eat but it had good variety, I would recommend it but come hungry!
This is probably my favorite sushi spot in the city.
I love not only ordering takeout but going here with friends. It is always a lively place to go on the weekend, but I highly recommend making a reservation. Great place for night out with friends or even a date. I consistently order the spicy tuna crispy rice (aburi), which is filled with rich umami flavor. I have tried the scallop crispy rice too, but it does not compare to the tuna one. Also, the spicy tuna roll is my favorite and if I am feeling galmarous I have gotten the nigiri set, which I recommend. One item I think you can skip on is the shrimp tempura, there was not much flavor without using the sauces. The service has also been consistently good every time.
If you're looking for a fancier sushi spot for date night
If you're looking for a fancier sushi spot for date night and don't mind paying a bit more, this is the place! I dined here during Chicago restaurant week and I was in love with everything. Since this restaurant is quite popular and known for their exquisite omakase room, I was so excited to stop in for dinner. Everything was a dream, and the service was excellent too. You can tell their sushi is of high quality and you're not skimped out on.

Went to dinner here on a friday night! Extremely busy on a weekend, highly recommend to make reservations in advance. Solid spot and ambiance for a girls night out or date night. Ordered the Umami Scallop over oshizushi-style rice (5 pieces) and it was delicious--great appetizer and not too filling. For dinner, ordered Tempura Shrimp roll (10 pieces) and a side of spicy mayo. Lastly, the Yuzu Margarita and it didn't disappoint for a spicy margarita. Highly recommend!
After trying Ramen-San, we were curious as to how Sushi-San
After trying Ramen-San, we were curious as to how Sushi-San would compare since we did really enjoy Ramen-San. Being in river north, it was extremely crowded so I had super high expectations. Their cocktail menu is very palatable with many diverse options for each type of drinker. I really enjoyed the drip on the strip. It was soju based drink with a sweet cloud foam on top. Very unique. For appetizers, we shared the wrinkled green beans and tuna crispy rice. The green beans didn't really have much flavor and so it felt like a chore to eat. The tuna crispy rice though was amazing. So creamy and fresh. The rice was perfectly crisped on the outside without being dry on the inside. As our mains, we shared half an order of bluefin tuna roll, scallop roll, and Japanese eggplant. The bluefin tuna was way too fishy for me. I am a bluefin tuna girly but this was just not it for me. I only ate one piece. We were told the scallop roll was one of their best foods but I was underwhelmed. The amount of mayo in the roll was sickening. Honestly a huge let down with the rolls. The Japanese eggplant was really tasty though and would definitely recommend to order to try. Overall, we were a bit disappointed in our experience here but am always open to trying as many restaurants as we can!
Sushi San instantly intrigued me with its sleek dimly lit
Sushi San instantly intrigued me with its sleek dimly lit interior and vibrant atmosphere. Despite the bustling crowd, the energy in the air added to the excitement of the evening. While the drinks menu featured interesting options, it's worth noting that quality comes with a price tag. However, the "Thank You #3" cocktail, served in a quirky to-go box, stood out as a memorable highlight and the margarita packed a punch. The culinary experience at Sushi San was fantastic experience, with each dish bursting with vibrant flavors and impeccable presentation. The spiced edamame and crunchy avocado roll were particular standouts among the diverse selection sampled. The spicy tuna crispy rice was an absolute must-try, offering a delightful blend of textures and bold flavors. Despite the higher prices, the outstanding ambiance and unique flavors make Sushi San a destination worth again.
Have to try this place if you are in Chicago! Amazing
Have to try this place if you are in Chicago! Amazing service and great music! The server was very welcoming and fast service. This place is always busy I would recommend reserving a table before you going there!
High quality but a bit overpriced.
I got the Megatron, which I split with a friend. It was dark and easy to hear; they easily sat us as two walk-ins on a Wednesday night. Friendly service, solid, above average fish, but I expected a bit more for the price point.
Great lunch spot.
I love the express lunch with tuna and the vietnamese pork dish. Plenty of good sushi options.
Came here for happy hour and their Japanese eggplant
Came here for happy hour and their Japanese eggplant tempura with the yuz Mayo SLAPPED! Their crunchy avocado maki was DIVINE! I would 1000% recommend coming here during their happy hour. Totally worth it. So we sat next to a couple who had the beef n bop and it smelled soooo delicious I knew I had to try it the next day. I made early reservations and was promptly seated. The service was great. Had the express lunch. The sashimi nigiri and sushi rolls were great cuts and I enjoyed them very much. I found the miso soup too salty and the seaweed salad too bitter and bland. I'm used to seaweed salad being pickled or having an almost sweet taste so that was underwhelming. It was $26 and that was not enough food to satisfy my hunger so I also got the beef n bop. Smelled delicious and the presentation was great but it didn't taste as good as I hoped. I wouldn't order that again. Overall I thought their dinner tasted amazing and their lunch was so-so and too expensive for what it was. The happy hour food was great but because we didn't make reservations, it was packed and we were seated at a community table right next to another couple even though the rest of the bench was empty which I didn't like. The waitress also told us to order all our food at once which I didn't like because with it being my first time I was not sure how filling i would find the food and I always like the option of adding more as needed. Bathrooms were nice. I love that they have paper towels as an option because many places don't. I liked the little message to help everyone wash their hands properly. The ambiance was good. I would go back during happy hour again.
Went for happy hour and it was great! There was a good
Went for happy hour and it was great! There was a good variety of food and a number of veggie/meat options. The server was attentive and helpful and the environment was calm and relaxing for dinner/drinks. Overall, ordered a bunch of dishes for a reasonable amount. Would recommend!
I had a great dinner experience at SUSHI-SAN.
The service was casual, yet attentive. They play some hip hop classics, so the vibe was chill, though it can get a little loud. My company was also super cool, fun, smart, and easy to talk to (rating: 5 stars). Nearly three hours passed, yet we felt neither rushed nor ignored. Now let's get to the food! We went sashimi-heavy, and it was good, but nothing to write Yelp about. I don't think SUSHI-SAN is the place for that. I would recommend the fun stuff: rolls, apps, sides, etc. The Spicy Tuna Aburi was awesome (pairs well with a Diet Coke), and you can't really go wrong with edamame. Bonus points for some nice mocktail offerings!
Loved the Sushi and the Atmosphere
This was just a fun place to have dinner. Staff is outfitted in cool "Sushi" sweatshirts; my daughter and I both bought ones as souvenirs! We were seated pretty quickly after arriving with a reservation. The sushi is really good with some that I have never experienced before. Good apps too! I would come back again for sure.
We went to check this place out pretty early on a Monday.
They were not very busy when we arrived. The waiter/bartender had an attitude and was not very friendly. The food was ok. I had a tempura shrimp roll, miso soup and some shrimp skewers cooked with a tangy red sauce. I would say check this place out but there are so many sushi restaurants in the area and I just feel the service here was not that great and the food selections well roll selections weren't that great either. It's downtown so no dedicated parking and the restrooms were pretty clean and it's a good sized place so there are plenty of tables and I even saw a sushi bar there.
We liked it quite a bit.
The environment was cool. Kind of busy, yet intimate in spots. Waitstaff was great. The food was excellent. Drinks were tasty. A little pricey but not insane.
We strolled in for our last lunch in Chicago.
The service was decent, server was polite and informed us that their hospitality group is part of a rewards program. The express lunch is a good deal. I opted for the sushi and sashimi choice. It also comes with seaweed salad and miso soup. The sashimi was good, comes with tuna, hamachi, and salmon. I also tried the honey gochujang shrimp. They were colossal sized shrimp, glazed in a spicy and sweet sauce, they were probably the best part of the meal. The restaurant was clean. The rest rooms were single stall and uni sex. They were also very clean and had aromatherapy incense sticks, nice touch.
Fun casual lunch/dinner spot
This has become one of my favorite spots in Chicago. Fun vibe with old hip hop music playing & the servers are very laid back and friendly. All the food I've tried here has been amazing. My favorite being the steak with the sweet soy sauce.. I could drink that sauce it's so good. Even when busy I can usually find a seat at the bar within 15 minutes or so.
Another great restaurant by Lettuce!
Very good all around. Great service on table and at the bar, helpful with recommendations for both food and drinks. The food is very good. A little loud, but all around a very good restaurant.
Hot spot!
Amazing place. Super fun atmosphere, we had a reservation there was a wait for people who didn’t. I recommend getting one aswell since this place seems very popular. The food was incredible, i recommend trying the rice (the beef bop or the chicken one are amazing choices) as well as the chicken nuggets. The service was great even with the place being full and busy. We were served in record speed. Will definitely be coming back here soon.
Fresh
Great sushi and sashimi. Service was excellent. Prices were reasonable, although drinks were pricey. We will certainly return.
Overpriced
It’s okay not the best and it’s very overpriced. There should be more selections of sushi and drinks. Friendly staff and quick service

Your bid has been “matched” with a reservation. From the time a reservation has been located, the seller of the reservation must connect with moderator to give transfer information for reservation. If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.

When it says working on bid, it means there are people looking to fill it.
