Had a lovely evening with friends.
Ordered soju, wine, and lots of apps. The cucumbers were addictive and the shishito peppers were delicious. Can't wait to go back and sit in the garden.

We have been seeking a new sushi experience on the UWS due to many places closing or not A-rated. Tonight we tried Sushi Nonaka and were transported to a zen state with superb food and perfect service. From the hostess to our server, we felt welcome and appreciated. We shall return!

Nice outdoor seating, but the food is overpriced for what you get. My sushi set was good, no complaints. However, we also got some rolls, and each of these was about $16 give or take, for pretty average rolls that you could get for half price elsewhere. The rolls also had chopped fish like you'd get for spicy tuna for some reason, instead of larger pieces, which was odd.
Be the first to ReplyGreat atmosphere and service.
I can feel the vibe of traditional Japanese sushi bar with experienced Japanese chef.
Be the first to ReplyThere are so many better omakases in New York City.
The food was OK but nothing to write home about. And it's severely overpriced. The staff is very friendly but it's just not worth your time or money.
Be the first to ReplySushi Nonaka undoubtedly stands out as one of the finest
Sushi Nonaka undoubtedly stands out as one of the finest sushi spots in the Upper West Side! The hospitality here was exceptional--everyone was incredibly courteous and attentive. Despite its cozy size, accommodating around 7 groups, the personalized service never falters. The culinary experience matches the exceptional service. Each dish boasts remarkable quality and meticulous attention to detail. I savored the exquisite Saba Mirin, which not only was reasonably priced but also accompanied by delightful and flavorful sides. Already looking forward to my next visit--it's an experience I'm eagerly anticipating!

Amazing value for high-quality food!! We got donkatsu bento box twice already in the last couple of days. My usual lunch spot for Japanese food was sushi yasaka, but so glad to find this place which is closer without compromising food quality. Hope more ppl order lunch from this place so that they offer more variety.

Don't be deceived by the empty seats when you look into the restaurant. The omakase sushi bar and outdoor seatings located downstairs are where the actions are taking place. Midweek dinner was not crowded at all. Nothing pretentious. Just fresh and delicious sushi.
Be the first to ReplyThis place has grown on us.
We just had to find the appropriate niche for our purposes! Although truth be told, for a date night with hours to spare, the Pardner and I would probably go elsewhere for omakase, when we are in the market for a neighborhood standard that welcomes our entire family -- Sushi Nonaka is truly top notch. We recently brought a pretty tough crowd of two adult sushi noobs; two children who are not noobs, but narrow in their preferences (they mostly just like hamachi negi); and a nine-month old, 50+ lb pup. Everyone left very happy. Nonaka serves excellent sashimi for the price range and a number of dishes (appetizers) for non-sushi eaters. Our appetizers of seaweed salad, cucumbers and agedashi tofu were simple, but well-seasoned, well-balanced, and delicious. The seaweed salad included several different kinds of seaweed of different colors, lightly, perfectly dressed. The children ordered maki, which were made with proper, short grain rice. The ratio of fish to rice was perfect in our book, the fish of high enough quality that our sensitive kids didn't reject it as being "too fishy." Those who ordered the standard sushi set meal received accessible nigiri (rice to fish ratio a touch high), all reportedly made with high quality neta. I think the fishiest neta was probably the mackerel. (Not sure if it was saba or aji.) My sashimi set menu was surprisingly excellent. Fish was served at a perfect (not overly cold) temperature and all were buttery, well-aged where appropriate, flavorful. IIRC, there was branzino (suzuki perhaps), hamachi, maguro, hotate, ebi (super sweet), and madai. A bowl of good, short-grain rice came with the sashimi, and preceding all of this, a bowl of good miso with the cutest little mushrooms. Given that I'm a big snot, I don't always find the nigiri to be perfect at Nonaka, but based on this visit, the sashimi I would not hesitate to get again and again. Wasabi was not freshly grated, but was a step up from the low-brow green paste served at run-of-the-mill US establishments, with a "clearer" flavor and better texture. I'm not quite sure how they achieved this effect. Did they mix freshly grated wasabi into dyed green horseradish paste? (That would seem a waste of good wasabi!) In any event, I can't say enough good things about the hospitality, including the kindness shown to our pup. (They brought her a ceramic bowl of water!) If I could give them 10 stars for hospitality, I would. The itamae was the same gentleman we saw on two prior visits. I haven't been able to find out his name, but it's clear that there is some talent, here. Our kids have asked for a return visit. And the adult sushi noobs have pledged to return. I love that Sushi Nonaka is the perfect gateway for introducing folks to sushi and sashimi that is truly worth eating without (1) breaking the bank or (2) requiring noobs to sit before an itamae, which can be intimidating for them, irksome for the itamae. So glad to have this in the neighborhood!
Be the first to ReplyVery fresh and tasty sushi.
Staff was attentive and kind. The lower alley seating is a great spot. If no one is in the main seating area don't let it fool you. They are all likely downstairs or in the alley.
Be the first to ReplyTruly amazing quality and service for the value.
A gem on the upper west side. We will be regulars

Ok where do I even start? So when we arrived with reservations, the host let us know right away that they raised the omakase bar seating price by an additional $100. We passed and sat on a table instead. Not a big deal. We ordered our appetizers, fried squid legs ($13) and shrimp and vegetable tempuras. The fried squid was crispy and lightly seasoned. The shrimp and vegetable tempura was a joke. We literally sat there and stared at it. It was not crispy and came out cold and you can see all this grease on the paper. Nothing special about it! It's like Trader Joe's shrimp tempura. Super small 3 pc shrimp and a quarter size 2 pc vegetable hashes. FOR $22!!!!!!!! We thought the vegetable was coming out separately but it was hiding under the shrimps. I didn't understand it. See photo for reference. We got the 10 pc omakase set ($115) and 8pc sushi set ($48). Really basic and nothing special. Miso soup was bland. We let our server know that the tempura appetizer was confusing and we were not pleased. She gave us a free glass of wine and a free pickled cucumbers. She was very sweet and very understanding. The only reason why I gave this place an additional star. The pickled cucumbers were so salty! Literally you can see sprinkles of salt on the top. We literally dunked the cucumbers into our bland miso to balance it all out. Total price was $300. So not worth it. We left unsatisfied because I wanted to try to this place out for the longest time and it was very disappointing. Sushi gari and kissaki will always be my all time favorite nyc sushi places!
Be the first to ReplyUnfortunately, we had a terrible experience with this
Unfortunately, we had a terrible experience with this restaurant. Service: we ordered Omakase special, house of hot sake and Boka KFC, the food came to the table was extremely slow, we waited around 1hour and half to get the Omakese special after the Boka KFC was served, while we are waiting, my husband ordered two beers. Food quality: The food was really average, there is nothing special, and the last desert took them another 25 minutes to bring it to the table, we almost had to leave as we waited too long for every dishes to come, to be honest the taste is really not that fresh compared to any other sushi restaurant we have been to. Price: It was surprisingly expensive with the food that they offered. I would say this meal is definitely unworthy of the price. I am not sure if they made the mistake or something wrong with the kitchen. Very disappointed in our first experience with this place.
Be the first to ReplyThe food was standard sushi at a luxury price point.
The service was ok and the plates were nice. I wouldn't pay this much again for what I consider standard sushi. They have a 90 minute cap on the time you spend there so it may not be the best for family birthdays etc. The lighting was nice and the back outdoor area is nice.
Be the first to ReplyThis restaurant was incredible.
I came in from California on business, and read about it in a review of top sushi places to visit solo. I can't recommend it enough, it was incredible. I had the chef's menu and Chef.Yuzi created a special artistic menu including toro, two kinds of snapper, sea bass, shark skin, barracuda, hamachi, sea urchin and so much more!! The chefs bar has a speakeasy kind of feel to it and I think I had an incredible New York find! I will definitely be back here and highly recommend it!

Amazingly fresh sushi with really friendly and helpful waitstaff. Sit at the sushi bar if you can
Be the first to ReplyGreat! Can accommodate gluten-free Omakase.
Cool speak easy vibe and awesome staff! This and Korami are best in the neighborhood.
Be the first to ReplyDelicious food.
Lovely welcoming service. Beautifully presented. Quiet appealing room.
Be the first to ReplyIt's hard to make a $160 meal worth it.
I've had it happen a handful of times, and have given credit where credit is due. But it's hard to do. And Nonaka didn't do it, for a couple of reasons:- iodiney uni. When uni is great, it's my favorite course. When it's not, it tastes like a medicinal swimming pool. Please don't make me want to spit one of your courses out at this price point. I could tell as soon as I saw how heavily marinated it was that they were trying to cover something up.- honey mustard sauce on the ankimo. Whyyy?- a few of the whitefishes were indistinguishable and at least one could have been replaced by something more excitingThere were absolutely some wins, though:- Nonaka probably served the most satisfying, crunchy-skinned sea bream of my life. - It was cool to try branzino raw, and not cooked in some Mediterranean style. - (With the exception of the honey mustard abomination), Nonaka was spot on with its flavor-brushings. Like most omakase meals, you shouldn't be using soy sauce, but at some other places, I still WANT to. I didn't here, since the flavoring was always sufficient,, yet still subtle enough to taste the fish, and also subtly different - chili oil, yuzu miso sauce, marinated shisito, etc. - I don't usually like maguro. I loved it here. There are better basic omakase offerings out there for the price, so I probably would not return, but every time I choose omakase, I end up with at least one or two new and delicious experiences, so I never regret it.
Be the first to ReplyHands down, the best sushi I've had in the US.
Everything is so fresh that it melts in your mouth. This is also the first time I've had branzino sushi there, which is out of this world. The fish is flown from Japan and gets there the morning of. The Hokkaido uni is incredible and so is their oysters with special sauces. The Japanese soufflé was also equally amazing. The sushi/sashimi combo omakase is more expensive than if you just did sushi omakase. We did the latter and it was plenty of food, and we had room for dessert which is never the case after full on omakase. The wait staff and the chef were incredibly polite and kind. After a small confusion, they gifted us to-go food, which was very thoughtful! I'm already dreaming about the next time I'll be back here.
Be the first to ReplyRAT IN RESTAURANT AND THEY CHARGED US FULL PRICE FOR MEAL.
There was a rat that scurried from the kitchen out to the restaurant and I made eye contact with the host who did not acknowledge it with me at all. Eventually when they came back over, we asked them them about their rat situation and the host proceeded to tell us that it was an ONGOING PROBLEM and started complaining about the landlord not doing anything about it and how the landlord wouldn't pay $60 (!!) for an exterminator and wouldn't patch up the walls where they were coming in from the street. We were absolutely shocked when the bill came with nothing at all comped. (not to mention the sake bottle we ordered was $30 more than they said it was). Earlier in the night, we had asked what their thoughts were on why there were so many omakase spots cropping up on the UWS. The answer we got is that they figured out they can charge more in this neighborhood. On top of all that, the sushi was not good - there were many pieces that were so gristly that I had to spit out a few pieces or only eat part of the slices of fish. And they used a blowtorch on over half of the sushi.
Be the first to ReplyNo complaints with this place .
We ordered the omakase , very fresh and tasty . We also ordered 2 appetizers , also pretty good. The price for Omakase was reasonable. We would go there again. Also see o the service was very good.
Be the first to ReplyCalled to cancel.
They still charged me $150. Called again and was told I gave them enough time to cancel and shouldn't get charged. I was still charged $150.
