Great Experience!
We’e heard about this place and were pleased to have the opportunity to visit. I understand that Sam isn’t there anymore but we had a great experience, nonetheless. We each ordered the omakase and a few other nigiri from the day’s specials. I also ordered the chicken karaage and the miso soup with clams. The omakase was mostly from the specials menu and included the day’s maguro and butterfish. These were melt-in-your-mouth delicious quality. The miso soup was perfectly flavored. We added a beer each as well. Oh, we tried the almond tofu desert which is not to be missed! The hojicha tiramisu was also delicous and my son loved the custard pudding. The server was attentive and very knowledgeable about the fish. We loved our time there!
Be the first to ReplyConsistently GREAT SUSHI!
Sushi Sam's has been around for a long time and for as long as I've been going there, some things never change: 1) Depending when you go, there can be a long wait for a table, 2) Food is consistently high quality and delicious, 3) parking in the area can be challenging and 4) the staff is always welcoming and friendly!

We called same day for a reservation on a Tuesday and they said just come by. We were seated within 5-10 minutes and the food was excellent. The host was Kevin. Our waiter was Kenneth and we met another worker with the same name, Kevin. They worked hard to get the food out quickly and it was a wonderful evening. We ordered edaname, several sashimi, several rolls, and shrimp and veggie tempura, all excellent! Wonderful evening! Thank you o much to the entire staff! Very appreciative!
Be the first to ReplyLong wait, but worth it!
Having traveled to Tokyo on business many years, I'm happy to say that you needn't travel to Japan to experience Japan's exquisite seafood offerings - it's all there at Sushi Sam's in San Mateo - stern looks, long waits, and authenticate , great sushi! It is what it is, but there is no substitute.Highly recommended, particularly off hours.

Glad they now take reservations. Still the best Spider Roll. Portions smaller than before, but still the best sushi. Efficient service.

Great food, fast service. Very crowded at lunch, waited 20 minutes but was worth the wait. Had both rolls and nigiri, all were very fresh and good and generous portions.
Be the first to Replygreat restaurant and good value
Sushi Sams has some great Japanese food. Their Sushi is fabulous. I have been to Japan many times and this is among the best Japanese foods I have had in the states. In addition the service was excellent. Water was refilled without having to ask. They gave me another serving of pickled ginger also without my asking. The only drawback is that the restaurant is crowded because it is so good!!

There are many sushi restaurants on the Peninsula. Sushi Sam's has been one the family favorites and our go to place for Japanese food. The staff are great and the food is fresh and consistent.
Be the first to ReplyThe #1 Sushi in San Mateo
Congratulations to Sam. I have known him for 30 years back when he worked at Isobune (boat place) in Burlingame. Known for his hot dog or spicy tuna role, that is reasonably priced and the best around, Sam has earned a reputation for being the best in San Mateo in one of the most crowded markets for sushi. Sam's strong points are his wide variety of unusual fish, that are always high quality. You will find much more than the basic hamachi and tuna. The negatives are that is hard to get into as there are no reservations. Plan on a 45 minute wait for lunch. That is a deal killer for many looking for a sushi lunch. In any event, it is exceptional. Sam is a fine watch lover, so if you see him, do notice the watch he is sporting. Chances are he will know the watch you have on. In addition to the sushi bar, there is seating for families. The only reason I gave this 4 stars is because of the inability to get in.
