Sushi Maruyama San Mateo Reviews from The Last Year
I was really excited for this place but was a little
I was really excited for this place but was a little underwhelmed when I got there. I booked this place a week beforehand since it gets booked really fast and walk in can be hard. I ordered a variety of nigiri, Japanese omelette with eel, and an otoro Handroll. I really enjoyed how fresh the scallops were and the other nigiris were great as well. But I felt that the price was really steep for the amount we get. Also, it felt a little rushed with the staff and I wished they slowed it down.
Sushi Maruyama in San Mateo offers a delightful, albeit
Sushi Maruyama in San Mateo offers a delightful, albeit slightly rushed, sushi experience. This cozy restaurant boasts both bar seating and regular tables, but its popularity necessitates reservations - make sure to book ahead of time! We were running late, so we called the restaurant to let them know, and they said that it should be fine, but we will have to finish by a certain time. It seems like there is a 1.5-hour limit on the dining experience, so please keep that in mind. The service was generally good, but the fast pace occasionally detracted from the experience. Our plates were whisked away a tad too quickly, sometimes even before we finished the last morsel. Their ordering system is convenient - you're provided with a sheet and pen to mark your selections from the premium nigiri, a la carte sushi, and roll options. This allows you to tailor your meal to your preferences and add more later if needed. I opted for the premium nigiri (8 pieces with egg castella for $54), while my friend chose a la carte selections. The premium nigiri offered a delectable array of fresh fish - Japanese Seabass, Horse Mackerel, Soy Marinated Bluefiu Tuna, Japanese Striped Jack, Minced Fancy Tuna, Wild Young YellowtaiI, Simmered Hokkaido Scallop, Japanese Fresh Water Eel, and Egg Castella. Each piece boasted a generous cut, but here's the thing - everything had a slightly sweet taste. It wasn't overpowering, but it was noticeable. On a positive note, my request for minimal wasabi on my nigiri was readily accommodated. The sea urchin (uni) from Hokkaido was good, but the portion size left me wanting a bit more. Overall, the fish quality was excellent, and the cuts were impressive. Sushi Maruyama offers a solid sushi experience. The quality of the fish is commendable, and the ordering system is user-friendly. However, the slightly rushed service and consistently sweet flavor profile across the nigiri prevent it from achieving a perfect score. If you're looking for a cozy sushi spot in San Mateo with fresh fish, Sushi Maruyama is worth a visit, but be prepared for the possibility of a quick turnaround and a touch of sweetness on your nigiri. Knowing this beforehand can help you manage your expectations and still enjoy a delicious meal.
Located at the edge of downtown San Mateo, parking is still
Located at the edge of downtown San Mateo, parking is still difficult during peak hours. There is only street metered parking nearby or paid parking garages. It's a fairly small location so tables are often filled. They do have a small sushi bar if you like watching the sushi chefs create the dishes. Highly recommend getting reservations as I've dined several times during peak dinner times and have seen people with no reservations get turned away. I've gone here a few times because it's one of the few places that has hotaru-ika during it's limited season (typically April to end of May). They serve it as nigiri w/ a little vinegared miso and wasabi, tempura or as a sashimi w/ vinegared miso. Love them all as the tempura is very light and not heavy with oil, as nigiri it gives a more solid bite and as sashimi let's you enjoy how fresh the hotaru-ika is. I ordered almost 2 of each of the varying ways it's served during my last visit and made the waitresses laugh. They said I basically ate a whole tray. I did warn them that I loved hotaru-ika though! One of the waitresses, Kokoro, asked for my name so next time they know to be prepared. They're all very so nice! We also ordered the wagyu beef carpaccio. The carpaccio had slices of black Perigord truffles but the yuzu mostly shined through. The meat was so buttery and was quickly demolished. Their 8 pcs nigiri omakase for $54 is popular for the quality of the fish. Their egg castella that accompanies the omakase is slightly sweet but light and spongy. We added an o-toro w/ truffle maki which was a favorite of the night as well. The braised tsubukai (whelk) wasn't overcooked and easily came out of the shells. Other dishes I've ordered in the past and enjoyed are the grilled miso eggplant, karaage, marinated soy cod, and the scallop carpaccio. Highly recommend!

Cozy and intimate restaurant with very friendly staff and
Cozy and intimate restaurant with very friendly staff and amazing food! Came here to celebrate my partner's birthday, and made a reservation in advance. Ordered the omakase which is two sets of 4 nigiri each, totaling 8 pcs. The first set of 4 was of classic nigiri (seabass, bluefin tuna, amberjack/kampachi, ora king salmon). The second set blew my mind as each piece of nigiri was so unique and had its own flavor profile, thoughtfully crafted. It contained minced toro taku, wild young yellowtail, firefly squid, and freshwater eel. Outstanding for $54. Ordered the Ora King Salmon Truffle hand roll, Scallop Sashimi, and Baked Snow Crab Soy Paper hand roll as well. You can't go wrong with anything here as everything is so fresh and flavorful. This is a meal that I will think about for a long time. The only thing better than the food was the hospitality, making this an overall dream experience. Would definitely come here again!

Food was excellent and also quite affordable so an amazing bang-for-the-buck experience.
This might be the best sushi for the dollar in California.
The ingredients are all outstanding and the chef adds little creative flairs that don't detract from a classic experience. The $54 omakase is a steal. Could easily be 2x. The Hokkaido uni is outstanding and while pricey will transport you for a moment to Japan. Looking forward to revisiting
For aesthetics alone, this place was perfect for the price
For aesthetics alone, this place was perfect for the price point. It truly reminded me of my experience in Japan except with an American twist. They had a bunch of r&b slow jams playing from the stereo. I loved it! However, I know that it's not everyone's vibe. The nigiri were fairly priced. The 8 piece omakase had a variety of fish from tuna, salmon, fresh water eel, and scallop with uni to name a few. Additionally, I ordered a5 wagyu nigiri which actually was my favorite bite of the night. The scallop was nice and tender too. As far as quality, it was good, but not great. The nigiri was a hit or miss. If not for the aesthetics and the cool vibes, I would rate this place a 3 out of 5.
The second visit was even better.
Called and left a message Monday and when I called Tuesday at 4pm they had listened to my message and had a reservation for me when the restaurant opened, sitting at the sushi bar. Food was amazing. This is going to be my regular sushi spot. The salmon truffle hand roll is next level and the nigiri is on point every time.
This place is very friendly and the sushi is fresh.
We ordered omakase and chawanmushi, Along with some seasonal items like firefly squid tempura. Overall would come back again and againa
Great Experience!
We’e heard about this place and were pleased to have the opportunity to visit. I understand that Sam isn’t there anymore but we had a great experience, nonetheless. We each ordered the omakase and a few other nigiri from the day’s specials. I also ordered the chicken karaage and the miso soup with clams. The omakase was mostly from the specials menu and included the day’s maguro and butterfish. These were melt-in-your-mouth delicious quality. The miso soup was perfectly flavored. We added a beer each as well. Oh, we tried the almond tofu desert which is not to be missed! The hojicha tiramisu was also delicous and my son loved the custard pudding. The server was attentive and very knowledgeable about the fish. We loved our time there!

Thank you for the question, if a seller is working on answering your bid, you cannot cancel it until their time is up and the bid is released back to you. The full amount of funds then go back into your AT account. Typically a seller has 48-72 hours to complete the bid.
