The food here is amazing .
. I had the okra ( it was my first time trying okra and it was super tasty ). I had the beef and broccoli, rice noodles, spicy green beans, hot and sour soup. I didn't like the hot and sour soup it was more on the sour side than anything.. I took 1 spoonful and I just couldn't continue.. everything else was delicious. The ambiance is very nice definitely a great place for a night out or with a group too.

Favorite Chinese food ever! Far more to offer than our Americanized standards. Favorite dishes: mala duck, yellow river beef, lava fish, popcorn chicken.
Be the first to ReplyAbsolutely delicious.
One of my favorite restaurants in Boston. We definitely recommend the cold noodles and fried tofu. Will definitely come back to try more. Ambience and service were also great. Cocktails are fine but not a highlight. Next time, we will try their house tea.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing variety of salads, vegetarian , seafood and chicken.
The service was really top notch in terms of speed, variety and quality of food. And spiciness quotient was definitely top notch. Definitely coming in again.
Be the first to ReplyAll stars for the amazing service provided by Bernadette.
She's funny, kind, caring and provides the best service! The food is of good quality and above average in taste. Location and ambiance is great!

We got several items for takeout, and the cons dominate the pros. The Changso Flavored Chicken was made by chopping up the carcass of the bird, rather than first removing the meat from the bone. The result was that about 30% of the morsels had bone shards or ribs or parts of the spinal column in them. The main eating experience was using fingers and tongue to remove the pieces of bone Also, the food is much more expensive than at two other good Chinese restaurants in the area. And the restaurant added thirty cents for the takeout bag! That is nickel and dime irritation. On the pro side, the egg and vegetable noodle dish was tasty. And the restaurant uses pressed paper boxes, rather than plastic, as containers. The food can be reheated in the microwave without transfer, and is better for one's health and for the environment.

Wow! How did I miss this spot? I chase great Asian food all over the boston area. Been to many spots in Quincy, Malden, Cambridge, Allston, Chinatown and lots more. I visited Sumiao for my first time today for lunch. Ordered way too much with a friend. Could not find a weak-link. Dumps, eggplant, wood ear, garlic calamari, beef on fire. Each dish was distinct and truly Hunan. The service we received from Bernadette was the same as the food: outstanding. I can't wait to go back for dinner with friends so we can order more!

We came here as walk-ins on a Saturday night and they were able to seat us immediately at the bar or communal table. We chose to sit at the bar, but the communal table looked well spaced out enough that it would have also been cute and enjoyable. Flavors and cooking style were tasty and authentic, but there was a big discrepancy in portion sizes between dishes. We got a decent size for our appetizers (mala duck and cold bean curd), but our vegetable dish of eggplant and string beans was much smaller than we are used to the dish being at Chinese food restaurants. Overall, the prices are on the higher end as well ($12-16 for appetizers and $20-40 for main dishes), but that's pretty inline with other nearby restaurants in Kendall Square. Our favorite dishes of the night were the mala duck and eggplant and string bean. Both were flavorful and delicious so would definitely get again. The cold shredded bean curd wasn't as flavorful as we would have liked. (Maybe our fault for requesting mild, but this dish could have used some soy sauce). Would skip. The lava fish and sweet tofu pudding were both tender and light and enjoyable, but not a must have again. Overall, the service was good and attentive, the decor was new and modern, and the food was yummy but a bit pricey. I would come here again to try some more dishes, hopefully ones on the better side of the price to portion size ratio.

It was our first time visiting Sumiao and we'll definitely be back! Our server, Gin, was so friendly and gave great recommendations. The entire staff was attentive as our water glasses never went dry. For food, we had the purple yam bao, spicy cauliflower, fried tofu with chive, and the crispy duck - all dishes we would gladly order again. Thanks for the recs, Gin!!
Be the first to ReplyWe saw this restaurant featured on the New York Times list
We saw this restaurant featured on the New York Times list of 25 Best Restaurants in Boston Right Now and I had to try it out! We got the "Chef Zhang's fried rice noodles" which comes with egg, chive, sliced cabbage, garlic, chili powder, pickled bean & "shrimp fried rice" which comes with shrimp, egg, pea, carrot. They created a welcoming atmosphere for us and the ambiance at the bar was really pleasant!
Be the first to ReplyVery fast service and accommodating for our 2 year old.
Most dishes are spicy, although there are nonspicy options.
Be the first to ReplyI made a reservation for a party of 2 at 6:45 on a weekday.
There was traffic getting there so I called ahead at 6:30 to let the staff know I was running late. I arrived at the host stand at 7:01 pm and was told the reservation was cancelled since it was 15 minutes past the reservation time.. luckily they were still able to seat us. It was very busy for a weekday night. It was a full house with a couple parties waiting to be seated. The decor is nice and they play soft music so you can easily hold a conversation without yelling, even in a crowded restaurant. Service was slow, but expected given how busy it was. We ordered three entrees to share and the dishes came at separate times with a long wait in between. We ended up taking home the third dish since we had already almost finished the two others before the third came out. There was some confusion with our table number and another table because food runners kept trying to serve us food that we didn't order. The food: Lava fish (regular spicy): fish was fresh, good flavor but could tell the kitchen was busy because some pieces were much saltier than the others Beef on fire: never tasted a dish quite like this before. Beef bites with cilantro, Fresno peppers and bananas peppers. Regular spicy has a little kick, was very good. Eggplant and string beans: eggplants were cooked perfectly. The dish held its own in terms of flavor and spice but it was a good vegetable dish to complement the other two dishes The drinks:Hunan mule (non alcoholic): tasty, on the sweeter side. They do have an interesting cocktail menu and also serve some wine/beer Overall will plan on coming back to try other dishes. They seem to be understaffed, they do have a large sign out front that they are hiring a variety of positions, so hopefully they get some help!

The food at SUMIAO was amazing!!!! My friend and I got the crispy duck (boneless), Hunan noodles, beef with broccoli and general tso chicken. Our waitress Bernadette was THEE BEST! She was very efficient and very accommodating! I highly recommend this place. Everything was delish; even the Mai Tai I ordered!
Be the first to ReplyThese people are the cheapest people in the restaurant
These people are the cheapest people in the restaurant business in greater Boston. I am in a hotel and I paid $60 for two dishes and they don't have the courtesy to include chop sticks. So my food is going to be cold before the hotel can provide me with utensils. There is an obscure box you have to check to get utensils. this is Chinese food in Cambridg. For god's sake include chop sticks. Skip this place. The food is good but no worth the price or the arrogance of the owner/chef.

Food is a little over-seasoned and a little over-priced but you're paying for the atmosphere. Kanye is right. Service is good. Soft recommend.
Be the first to ReplyReally great service and pretty great food.
Be careful if you're not that good with spicy, we got the mild chicken, which was the lowest of 4 spice levels and it was still packing some heat. Very good tho! The pickled cucumber salad side was so refreshing and a highlight.
Be the first to ReplyI like the food a lot.
No complaints in this regard. We are new to neighborhood and have eaten here before, but...I had to cancel a reservation because my wife had a serious medical incident the day of the reservation and could not go to dinner that night with family, who chose to stay with her that evening. When I called to cancel I was told that I would be charged $25 per person for the late cancellation. I was able to avoid this charge only by agreeing to go to the restaurant and place a take out order instead. I will not make reservations here again.

The sizzling crystal vermicelli had a fantastic blend of flavors and textures. The egg and noodles went well together. Even with the higher price tag, I look forward to eating here again.
Be the first to ReplyVery authentic Chinese food.
The Kung Fu chicken was top tier.
