🤢 2/5 - Dated and disappointing.

Let me start out with the good things: clearly this is a historic lodge of great importance to the history of Deer Valley. The location is the best for serious skiers. The ski and boot room service is the best. Most of the people who work there are eager to do well and are professional, dutiful, courteous, and truly want the guest to feel good. Mr. Benjamin the front desk manager ever so friendly and caring. BUT... if you are looking for beautiful rooms (I know beauty is subjective) I did not find it here. The decor is dowdy at best and almost depressing. The lodge is in dire need of updating. Yes, some history and old places are charming.. but in this case there is a depressive feel to the rooms' set up. I was told that all rooms, residences, and accommodations are privately owned and decorated differently. But most that I looked at after I got so upset with our assigned room were mostly the same. Dated and dowdy. I was also told that if you rent in the newer part of the Erickson estates (it was not clear to me what exactly that meant no matter how much I asked) that the accommodations are newer. There are houses for sale, condos being built, and one 22 million dollar home being adverstised for sale.. All looked amazing.. So maybe that is the direction of the future? Not sure. it is very hard to understand this place actually. AND, no one seems to know how to explain it. AS for the FOOD: THAT IS THE MOST AWFUL. Room service is below mediocre with a very limited menu. Someone needs to find a better chef for sure. The main restaurant staff all friendly and nice (too many people stranding around somehow.. but eager to be welcoming) and the food very average. The breakfast people surely work hard to present a well balance buffet. But, there again, the chef needs to be replaced FOR SURE. Everything could be many notches better. I am not sure as we spent AROUND 2500 DOLLARS EACH NIGHT FOR A ROOM HOW ON EARTH TO JUSTIFY THAT WITH WHAT WE EXPERIENCED! This hotel at best may be for large conferences or meetings maybe? I will say that the manager did 'upgrade' us. But what that meant just a bigger room with a kitchen and wood fireplace. The furnishings again 'dowdy'. Something my great grandparents furnished? I understand that there is a certain 'style' to Deer Valley as we saw some of those sort of neglected hotel entrances and stained benches at the Montage, and perhaps the best of the worst (since we did make an effort to discover other venues while we were there) MAYBE the St. Regis (that too felt so commercial and many unused neglected spaces. NONE of the charm of say Beaver Creek or even Jackson Hole. The ski slopes are the best but WHY and can someone explain to me is the food, accommodations, and style of the Deer Valley so lacking of charm and cozy? It does not take much to fix a broken light finial in a reception area? Or to have a clean bench? Or to employ some fresh colors and liveliness (for example most spaces in the ST. Regis as we visited in the afternoon where not utilized and felt so lonely)... Anyway... that is my honest review. Sad about it. Why do we continue to accept mediocrity?
