Starbelly San Francisco Reviews from The Last Year

The service is terrible and staff is rude the second you walk in. The server started complaining she wanted to go home. They had ants on the table outside and I asked to move and she was irritated. The inside smelled terrible. This is my second time trying this place after having a terrible service the last time. The food looked tempting but not worth it. Don't waste your time or money.

I've always loved Pixar movies, and Ratatouille has been a favorite of mine for a long time. Little did I know it was more of a documentary than a work of fiction. I always thought of myself as a fan of Remy the mouse and considered him the protagonist. I went to Starbelly with my date and we were planning on trying the restaurant week menu. We've been before and sat inside during a night of bustling service, so tonight we decided to sit in the cozy outdoor dining area, which is a cabin-like covered patio with string lights and hanging plants. The appetizers were ok. The toast with the liver pâté was burnt, and the ravioli was tasty but only consisted of two or three small bites. The main courses came out - I got a steak over plantains and my date had a pork chop over asparagus. The steak dish was really bland but things were about to get spicy and exciting in this restaurant. I was going to ask the waiter for salt and pepper to make it easier to eat, when I felt some tickling on my knee. I figured my date was getting a little frisky, which surprised me because we had only been here for 30 minutes, and usually she waits until either I am really tired or a movie we're watching is getting interesting before making a move. I look down at my leg and saw a little mouse crawling over me. The mouse ran away to another table. My date got jealous and accused me of letting "just any old creature" touch on me. I had to explain that I didn't invite this mouse and had no dating history with this mouse. I had never met this mouse before and don't even know that many mice. She then brought up that my Facebook relationship status is still listed as single, even though she is fully aware that I am locked out of my Facebook. As we continued to argue, another mouse ran across the ground by my feet. I suddenly realized that I am no different from all of the humans in Ratatouille who consider mice as villains, and in the glossy beady eyes of a mouse, I am the villain. The wait staff couldn't be bothered with us during our time here so there wasn't much chance to comment on the food or mice, or make any sort of request or indication about the experience at Starbelly. I told my date I don't think mice should be in restaurants, and because I took that stance she took the opposite side. She contended that mice are to be expected here and there is nothing they could possibly do about it. I insisted that semi-outdoor dining is not camping, and we should assume that mice wouldn't be touching us during our meal. When we disagree, I find it is better to wait until her sister or mom are in town and we can both make our case to them so they can serve as both judge and jury on the matter. Once our heels were dug in, we decided to take our desserts to go. They ended up giving us the wrong desserts in the boxes which I can understand, because they are probably busy dealing with a significant mouse problem in the back of house. Perhaps the mice I saw got to my dessert before they could box it up so they threw in whatever else was handy instead. The difference between Starbelly and Ratatouille is that in the movie, the mice make the food better. At Starbelly, the mice aren't allowed to season the food and instead serve to entertain the guests. If I come back, I'll put my cat on a harness and bring it with me so that both of us can have a meal involving mice.
Went here with my friend during SF restaurant week and it
Went here with my friend during SF restaurant week and it may have been my favorite restaurant to try this week! We each ordered a nice lychee blossom cocktail and it was refreshing and quite fizzy! For $45/pp, we each ordered: * an appetizer- we both got the crab dumplings with burrata - wow it was so flavorful! * For entrees - I ordered the bavette steak with fried plantains - the steak was perfectly cooked medium rare! Tender and juicy and went well with the plantains. My friend got the pork chop which she really liked as well * For desserts, we each ordered their warm toffee cake with mascarpone and dates - it was the perfect dessert to finish our meal! Definitely an amazing way to try out Starbelly! You won't regret it! We sat in the back patio and it was super cute and cozy outside! Great ambiance. Service was fairly quick !
The food and the cocktails were excellent.
I'm taking off two stars for unfortunately lackluster service. I was so happy to get a quiet table in the back of the outdoor area, but then realized that we were consistently forgotten by the servers. Too bad. Dessert served with no utensils. Old finished cocktails sat on the table for the entire meal. Perhaps they needed another server to manage our area. Otherwise, I'd give the place five stars!

We've been here a few times in the last couple months, including RW, and it's reminded me how much I love Starbelly! Some of my fave dishes: -chicken liver pate, always -fries -dungeness crab Burrata dumplings so good I wanna cry (seasonal though I think they're all good) -pork chop -burgers (incl the veggie!) -seasonal pizza Their HH is great too - we've picked up a couple cocktails heading into dinner. I'm partial to the Dr's Orders and my partner is a Starbelly Manhattan. The $20 burger + cocktail deal is a no-brainer if looking for something more filling! Desserts here aren't really my jam - skew too sweet for me - but for a bite or 2 the toffee cake and pot de creme are decadent and satisfying. Inside or heated patio is both great, but I always choose patio as a bit of a luxury when I can. Dog friendly! I can usually get a res on pretty short notice, even for a group, and I know it's a crowd pleaser so it's an easy choice. Almost all the staff is seriously LOVELY but last couple times we've had off encounters at the bar that are always redeemed by everyone else through the night.
I came here for brunch with a group of 6 on Saturday.
My husband and I shared the buttermilk fried chicken and waffles and loco moco. The chicken and waffles was delicious and syrupy, and one friend from Hawaii even complimented the loco moco saying that the sweet soy gravy was rich and flavorful. We sat inside and everyone in our group also loved the cozy yet classy wood vibes! I liked that it was easy to obtain a last minute reservation for a weekend brunch and most of the staff were friendly, but we did come at a busy time so the hostess was quite short with us and it was difficult to wait for the one bathroom without blocking the walkway for people coming through.

Vibes are cocktail bar meets a dog friendly cozy heated enclosed patio. The latter sold me :). Enjoyed a medium rare burger with skinny fries and a manhattan (your choice from the hh drink menu) For $20 this was a hh favorite as most everyone ordered this set. Staff are attentive and food and drinks came fast. Note the hh menu is small so check online before you head out.
Definity going back here.
cut back outside seating with heaters *yay the drinks are cute and delicious
I loved the dumplings and spring pea salad.
The guys really enjoyed the Italian sausage pizza.
Best chicken liver pate I've ever had - and the cocktails
Best chicken liver pate I've ever had - and the cocktails are spectacular. Tasty, strong enough to give you a kick. Plus, there's the back patio to lounge around over the weekends.

Went for Valentine's Day we did tapas so multiple appetizers and they where all really good! The passion star cocktail was amazing and service was really good! The place was packed but our food came out pretty quickly. We sat in their indoor patio and it was supper nice and cute and was heated which was great.
Consistently has good food and service.
Chicken Po Boy sandwich or the burger are my 2 favorites.
Don't serve day old or more reheated roast chicken.
It doesn't save you as much time as u think, and product is nearly inedibly dry. Pizza is pretty decent, and nice patio area.

the ambiance of the outdoor seating is cute although a bit tight. Came for brunch and had the burger and my dining companion had the chicken po boy which looked great. The service left a bit to be desired (hostess was a bit rude and our server was a little hard to get a hold of) but if you live in the area and aren't in a rush not a bad place to check out
Great spot for classic American food.
Although restaurant was busy, service was attentive and accommodating. We had a reservation and were seated right on time. Food arrived quickly. Restaurant is classy and has mood lighting creating a nice ambiance. Ideal for a first date! I ordered the Margherita pizza (basic, but delicious). Additionally, their cocktails are fairly priced with unique flavors. Will visit again soon!

A disappointing return to a neighborhood restaurant; after many years of not eating at a familiar place and reviewing. The place could use a thorough cleaning, de-cluttering, change out soiled menu, and updating its short menu this place may rise again. Midweek lunch crowd was not sparse, but w one wait staff, 1server, don recall number in the kitchen --the service was slow. The tired menu of sandwiches, bar bites and pizzas was not up to the standard for this once neighborhood jewel.
I had brunch here, and it was okay but not great.
I made a reservation for brunch. I suppose it should've been a clue that this place isn't super impressive that I was able to get an immediate reservation on my way there. When I arrived, I was seated promptly and given water. However, no one came to take my order for at least 15 minutes. I ordered scambled eggs with potatoes, toast, and bacon and orange juice and coffee to drink. The server asked if I wanted cream and sugar, then forgot to bring them. My orange juice arrived well after my food. The eggs were overcooked, in my opinion. The rest of the food was tasty, but nothing special. The coffee mug had a visible coffee film on the inside, and it did come off if touched with a fingertip, so I'd say their dishwashing needs improvement. There's plenty of seating: outside, inside, and a patio. I'm not sure I'd go here again. It wasn't impressive.
Dined with two friends after work this evening.
I arrived first, was promptly greeted and offered indoor or patio seating. During the walk to peruse different tables, I was asked how my evening was going so far. Not having any food or drink yet, I knew right then that I was going to love Starbelly. I chose the heated and covered patio and my friends joined soon after. We ordered a variety of delicious dishes for sharing. They really do have something for everyone here! My favorites included the pan roasted mussels, butternut squash dumplings, fresh spaghetti, bacon pizza, and the date and toffee cake (served warm!). Super service from the warm and friendly staff throughout the meal. Can't wait to return to try more dishes!
Went there for a Valentine day date.
The back patio was amazing. The host treated me like family, and the pizza is amazing. Would love to chat with the owner about expanding 650-402-1276?
I loved the yummy food, and wonderfully crafted drinks.
Great with a group or just you two.
Recommended place to eat
We went here on the recommendation of a friend and a good recommendation it was! We sat in the outdoor area at the back which was well heated, chilled and relaxed. I had one of the lovely cocktails on offer. When it came to ordering I asked the waiter what he might suggest and was surprised that he recommended a corn pizza. I thought I’d go with it despite usually being a meat eater. Our starters came and then our mains (pizzas) came almost immediately which we had forgotten about (we should have asked them not to do this). I understood why he had recommended the pizza it was delicious. It was a lovely meal and would thoroughly recommend.

Your bid has been “matched” with a reservation. From the time a reservation has been located, the seller of the reservation must connect with moderator to give transfer information for reservation. If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.

When it says working on bid, it means there are people looking to fill it.
