Went a few weeks back and had to write a review.
If you ever take the Staten Island ferry, you must stop at Asha. Viji runs the show and is a saint of a woman. The food was great and our experience was wholesome. It's how a meal should be enjoyed.

My friend N has been telling me so much about this Sri Lankan restaurant in Staten Island for a long time now ever since she has seen it from a food blogger's reel advertising about its absolutely scrumptious yet affordable food. Some people might actually think that it can be very far away whenever they hear the words "Staten Island." But, the distance wise is actually not too bad at all because the train is just right there in front of the Staten Island Ferry Terminal. Take the 1 to South Ferry or the R to Whitehall Street as they're the closest MTA stations nearby. You can take the Staten Island Ferry to get to the restaurant. Once you arrive at the St. George Terminal from the ferry, you can take the S46, S48, S62 or just basically whatever bus that comes along as most buses pass by Victory Boulevard anyway in the first place. Then, we got off the bus and it's right there around the corner. As we'd opened the door to start walking inside, a warm but bold voice of the lady owner bounces off the walls of the small and cozy restaurant with a standing portable heater by the seats. Additionally, there're about 5-6 news article mentions and/or awards all framed up and proudly hung one after the other. Impressed that even the NY Mayor has eaten their Sri Lankan food! I was excited to fill my belly and the owner saw how excited I was because I was literally taking pics of everything inside. Upon entering New Asha, you're enveloped in a warm and inviting atmosphere. Vibrant colors and traditional Sri Lankan decor create a cozy and cultural setting. Soft lighting and comfortable seating add to the relaxed vibe. The open kitchen allows for tantalizing aromas and sights of sizzling dishes. The intimate space exudes a sense of community, making it perfect for gatherings or dates. The ambiance beautifully complements the delicious cuisine, immersing you in a genuine Sri Lankan experience. New Asha Sri Lankan Restaurant offers a delightful culinary experience, showcasing an array of traditional Sri Lankan dishes. Their menu boasts a rich variety of flavorful options, including tender and spicy meat curries, fragrant rice and roti, delicate string hoppers, and crispy papadum. Each dish is skillfully prepared, bursting with bold and nuanced spices. Standouts include the tender beef curry, goat curry plus the fluffy and aromatic coconut rice. Didn't get to try out desserts like the sweet and creamy Wattalappam though because I was already too stuffed by the end so perhaps next time around. A true taste of Sri Lanka awaits! The food is super healthy, fit for everyone whether you're vegetarian/vegan or non-vegetarian/vegan, because it's totally delicious and very authentic indeed! The lady working behind the counter is so friendly, kind-hearted and informative. My friend N & I ordered + shared a platter of egg roti parrota, mutton curry + veggie curry over coconut rice, and 2 passionfruit juice (not included in pic from being finished already). They are flavorful, refreshing and bursting with flavors. New Asha's mutton curry is a masterpiece! Tender, juicy meat in a rich, aromatic sauce with a perfect balance of spices. Each bite transports me to Sri Lanka! Prices are reasonable and very generous portions. What I thought is interesting: Customers can pay after you've finished eating instead of paying for it at the cashier right away when ordering the food at a self-serve eatery. Accepted forms of payment are cash and/or credit/debit card. Has a clean bathroom stall for customers. Love the vase of vibrant flowers! Such a humble and sweet restaurant owner + the food is fulfilling & delicious. Will definitely go back again next time.

Went to Staten Island on a whim yesterday and my friend & I walked to this place from the ferry, about 20ish minutes! From the moment we walked in we were greeted with total kindness and generosity. We met Viji who addressed us by name the entire visit telling us to sit down and be comfortable as she prepared dishes for us. We weren't sure what to get so she literally went into the back and made us a custom plate of things to try. I've never had a restaurant experience like this. It was so special and so FUN!!! The food was phenomenal with a variety of flavors across the entire plate. Spicy:-) The house made passionfruit drink was delicious too and I was able to savor it through the whole meal! I couldn't recommend this place more. It was such a timeless and heart warming experience. I'll be dreaming of the food until next time!!

This place has some of the most flavorful, vibrant Sri Lankan food I've ever tasted in my life. Even though the restaurant is small, it's clearly very well cared for as if it's a relatives kitchen that's invited you over for some amazing food. When I walked in, the woman at the counter introduced herself right away and struck up a sweet but non invasive conversation. I took all of her recommendations and that was definitely the right move - especially for the creamy jackfruit and fried chicken. Hands down the best item at the restaurant though is the homemade vegan tapioca pudding. I'm not a vegan, but I do enjoy coconut milk, and this has to be one of the best desserts in the NY area. If you pass this place up while looking for Sri Lankan food on Staten Island, you'd be making a grave mistake.

Flavors are so delicious, enjoyed goat curry, the platter which I highly recommend, included lentils, perfectly pickled onion, spinach, cabbage and rice. Viji is an exceptional, her friendly service and smile made this dining experience even better. This is a modest restaurant tucked in a neighborhood, truly a hidden gem!! As it's a neighborhood, not much sightseeing nearby. We took a Lyft from the Snug Harbor Cultural Center and Garden to get there and back to the Ferry. The food is perfectly spiced, portions generous-highly recommended!! Thank you Viji for an incredible meal and exceptional service.

An amazing gem of a restaurant! The food was delicious and the owner is super sweet. She gave us great recommendations and was super kind to my daughter. The prices you really can't beat for the quality and quantity of food. Definitely try the goat curry and the fresh roti if you have a chance!

Yum!! Authentic!! We ordered a lumprais special with mutton and coconut sambal. No frills place but amazing food and great service as they continually checked in with us to make sure we liked it / were eating it correctly.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing owner and amazing food.
Nine of us bombarded her store and she very kindly accommodated us, rearranging the tables to fit everyone. We let her pick all the food since we knew nothing- and it was the right thing to do. I am pretty sure we got a little of everything. And the crazy thing? It still only came out to $20 a person! I highly encourage people to have a fun excursion from the city like we did. The the free staten island ferry and make your way here and you will not be disappointed.

I'm going to echo other reviewers' comments on the owner Viji's hospitality and warm welcome into her small, cozy restaurant. I ordered the chicken curry plate with a fish roti. The chicken curry plate was loaded with rice, pickled onions and peppers, and assorted vegetables like beats and lentils. The picked onions added such great balance to the dish with its acidity and freshness. Viji was so kind to offer more after hearing how much we enjoyed it. The fish roti was very flavorful and quite good although a bit dry and a little too spicy for my partner. Overall, it was a great experience not only because of the food but because of how Viji introduced us to Sri Lankan cuisine. The portion sizes are generous and the food is really delicious.

For me, this is like walking into your favorite auntie's kitchen and you know she will take care of you. I came in and let Vigi know that I am vegetarian and asked for her recommendations. She served up a beautiful and flavorful meal. This is a small, friendly, family restaurant.

It was something new and the lady was super nice and she made sure we were all set, but I wasn't really feeling some of the food especially the mutton roll which didn't have much mutton in it. I did love the beets (I don't usually eat beets) and the pickled onion/tomato was good also. This is my first time trying Sri Lanka food so maybe next go round I will choose something that my palette will love.

Our goal was to see "Little Sri Lanka," which is in the Staten Island neighborhood that is supposed to have one of the largest Sri Lankan populations outside of Sri Lanka. Honestly, there wasn't much to see in Little Sri Lanka, which was only one block of Sri Lankan restaurants and grocery stores. But the place where we ate was special, not just because of the excellent food but more because of the hospitality. New Asha Sri Lankan Restaurant has been a food critics' favorite for a long time -- Anthony Bourdain ate there way back in 2009. It turned out to be a really good choice. It isn't much to look at. There are only three tables and you order at the counter. But the owner Viji greeted us, came over to our table, and asked both our names, introduced herself, and welcomed us to her restaurant. She guided us through the menu -- which was all food we'd never had before -- and was insistent that we not over-order. So with Viji's help we got a fish roti, which was a spicy samosa-like triangle made with mackerel, and mutton (i.e., goat) kottu roti. That is chopped roti (an Indian flatbread) mixed with onions, cabbage, cubed goat, ginger, garlic, and egg. It was very good. But the owner also put together a selection of little bowls of beets, cabbage, pickled onions, daal, goat curry, rice, and a spectacular "fish gravy" -- and when we asked how the fish gravy was made, she gave us both big chunks of kingfish. It was all great, but even better was the owner sitting down with us for a good 15-20 minutes talking about Sri Lankan food. Then she brought out tastes of jackfruit, just because it is so important in Sri Lankan cuisine. We polished off everything, but then Viji assembled a container of "leftovers" so we would have something to enjoy the next day. We really enjoyed it, it was one of the very best experiences of our 30-day stay in New York City. Judging from her glowing Yelp reviews, Viji is equally gracious, welcoming, and informative with other customers. And her food is delicious.
Be the first to ReplyViji is very friendly and the food is excellent.
What more can I say. They have passion fruit drink and faluda. From Manhattan you can take the Staten Island ferry and then a short bus ride.

I have been trying to come out to this place for over a year now, and finally the day came. The menu was overwhelming for us, so we welcomed the friendliness and service of the woman running the place. She helped us get an assorted meal, with plenty vegetarian options, that we could try a bit of many options. The food was flavorful, and there were some really interesting things, the caramelized egg plants were probably my favorite. I was expecting slightly cheaper prices, but with hospitality and portions, it was worth it.
Be the first to ReplyAbsolutely amazing! Top 20 places in New York to eat at.
We had the baked buns with fish and we had the goat curry served with sides of jackfruit, dal, potatoes, and coconut chutney. Every bite was excellent, especially with the pickled onions. The owner was also a delight.HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Love their Kothu roti ( chicken/ mutton), fish curry and crab curry. Best is their paruppu vadai. It will run out if you go late. Liked their fish rolls and muttons rolls too. Never miss their tea. Nice small place which me and my husband drive for more than an hour to eat good Sri Lankan food and vadai. Give it a try. Very friendly service.
