St. JOHN Bread and Wine London Reviews
Wonderful food, shame about service.
My friend and I recently dined at St John’s bread and wine to celebrate his recent job offer. I was incredibly excited to eat here having followed the St John story for a good few years as a personal obsession of mine. We started with an old fashio
Its simply sublime
No AI here - It simply sublime - Best meal of the weekend - Go its wonderful - Everything appears simple but that's the key, its so much skill in making simple fantastiv
I'm shocked to read good reviews about this restaurant
I'm shocked to read good reviews about this restaurant because our food was extremely unpleasant. I got served the worst food I've tasted in the past 3-4 years. Wait staff is friendly but they can't make up for the atrocities committed

St John Bread and wine features a very unique menu with some very creative dishes. Almost like a cafe style feel to the establishment with a more upscale feel to it. Featuring a wide and great selection of wines. The food was all very delicious along
Very good
Our fifth visit to St John Bread and Wine in Spitalfield (we're also fans of the St John Smithfield restaurant). Once again we enjoyed the friendly service from the young staff, the delightfully British menu and the comfortable surroundings. We

We always enjoy our meals here on our trips to London, I think we prefer it to the original St.John in Smithfield. I used to be a big fan of the owner when he was the chef at French House, many years ago. As a British expat living in the U.S., I lov
One Disappointment does a bad restaurant not make…
What a sad day for me….. I think I just ordered wrong. I have been here an uncountable amount of times and couldn’t normally speak more highly of the place. Hence I will be back and I will recommend to others….. However!! Cold greeting without

The service wasn't the best on our visit but you're not getting these plates and flavours anywhere else. Such a celebration of food.
I'm sure my impression is tainted by all the restaurants
I'm sure my impression is tainted by all the restaurants I've visited all over the world but this food looks and tastes bad. By that I mean there are a lot of dishes in various shades of brown and just bland and greasy. The atmosphere when
Average and Pricey
I agree with previous reviews that this place had a number of positives but also a number of negatives . Firstly the food is unashamedly British fodder, so if that’s not for you, this probably isn’t the place. That said the concept is different,
Average, overpriced.
To be fair, the waiting staff were excellent, very attentive, full of information about the menu. Thank you. Chicken liver with prune. On toast, delicious if rather small, but for the burnt edges to the toast. Overwhelmed the taste of the pate. My
An okay night.
Was literally okay. We shared pretty much all our plates between 6 of us. The starters were way better than the mains. And the fairy cakes after were okay. A good experience I guess but I wouldn’t recommend for people to go there. Overly expensive.
pleasant but underwhelming
It was ok - we’ve lived in the area for four years , saying we must go ! But, No music No atmosphere Waiter was good , noticed he had the same banter for each table. Food - ok 80% vegetables 20% main meat. My partner ordered brisket and be
Excellent.
The rarebit is absolutely incredible, as are the smoked cod roe and the madeleines for dessert. The pig skin salad was also excellent, as was the roast saddleback. We were less crazy about the mackerel, which also felt like overkill with how much oth
Charming server and well prepared food with stripped down ambience
Truly enjoyed our dinner here! We had basement seating and Andrew was our charming server. We were the only table for a while and so we enjoyed attentive friendly, knowledgeable service. The parsnip soup was very good. We also enjoyed the rarebit, cr
Great dinner spot
This spot was great to have modern interpretations of "traditional" English food. I appreciated the seasonality to the dishes. I'd definitely come back.
Most enjoyable
Fun as always the food continues to be good and varied (asparagus and artichoke were delicious) and a nice change from chain, samey menus. Be careful as it’s not cheap and the costs can mount up if you are peckish as the portion sizes are smallish
Simple and Delicious
A very interesting experience! Bustling and busy, I thought it may take a while to get our meals but in fact the service was efficient. Our entree of Welsh Rarebit was to be honest a bit plain, although quality was high and the bread especially nice
Overall, had a nice dinner here and would recommend trying
Overall, had a nice dinner here and would recommend trying it if you have a few days in London. The ambience itself is a bit crowded packed with tables upon tables and there seemed to be one main waiter, so the service was a bit slow. The drinks are
Solid 4.
5 stars Uniquely inventive tasty food that is not fussy. Everything we tried was delicious. Madeleines, Welsh rarebit and Shetland beef and mash were standout. Simple buzzing atmosphere, plain tables and decor. Unfussy but comfortable. Servic
Longer review to follow.
Definitely lives up to their long term reputation for perfecting simple, brilliant British cuisine. Be sure to get whatever is recommended. Best chicken liver toast I ever eaten, served alongside brandied prune and cornichons.
Good and simple food
Our choice goes to this 'modern traditional' restaurant as defined by the Michelin guide. Simple place, well frequented, fast service, the waiters are kind, the maitre is kind but not too much (ready to correct any pronunciation defects of us Italia
Will be back again and again. Just awesome.
Amazing menu and team. We had a nice selection of the small plates and 2 of the large to share with a side and was shocked that our bill with drinks was so reasonable. For the quality of food and service I feel we got a bargain. Will be back as so
Worth going just for the bread and butter
I do like this brand, we had a lovely meal for lunch today. Friendly kind and caring service. Really nothing to fault. A recommendation that is given without reservation.
Always something different to try
Good vibe in this bright minimalist room. Friendly waiting staff. Interesting menu, best bit today was the pate 👏 Always something different to try.
The Best Nose/Tail
Excellent nose to tail dining. St John continues to lead the movement and after many years remains innovative. Delicious food, excellent service and a very good wine list.
Last Nite in London
We came here on the assumption that bone marrow was on the evening menu. Excited we came early for dinner rez. Not. The manager on duty sat for a chat as we enjoyed our wine. This was one of AB’s fav stops back in the day for its unique nose to tai
Classy but unpretentious restaurant.
Excellent restaurant serving perfectly cooked fish. The ambiance is unpretentious and the service from Ronnie was friendly, professional and seamlessly efficient: not only did the food arrive in good time but the bill appeared as if through her power
Another excellent meal at St John
Always exceptional. St John never fails to deliver. First time at Bread and Wine, a cosier version of Smithfield.
Very good
Our second visit to Bread and Wine and I think we prefer it to the original restaurant in Smithfield, which we have been long time fans of. Once again we enjoyed the very friendly service from the young staff, the delightfully British menu and the c
Two words can sum up this place: "must try"
I took my wife here for our anniversary a few weeks ago because it has always been one of my favourites and it certainly did not disappoint. The food was impeccable as always, especially if you embrace the nose to tail ethos. The wine list offers gre
I wanted to love this place, I really did.
Eating at a St. John establishment has been on my bucket list forever since watching Bourdain do a segment with Fergus Henderson back in the day with bone marrow on toast and black pudding with eggs. I was on business with colleagues and able to scor
The atmosphere and staff were pretty nice.
We were 4 people and we went there for lunch. They provided some "nose to tail eating" which was nice but the taste was pretty average. The sea bass was good though. Overall I was a bit disappointed by the not-so-impressive food. I felt it
Perfect lunch
In London for a theatre visit and to visit my ‘hipster’ son who lives in Shoreditch We are ‘from the North’ and regularly eat out in quality restaurants so after being initially pleased with his lunchtime booking at St John’s Bread and Win
Skip it if you are not a hipster
So this is hipster place, which is fine, if the food was better. And they added a bit of a service. We got there at 8pm and were seated at 8.15. Only at about 830 someone came to take our order or wine. By that time, some of the menu items were not a
Ate here with family and friends over Christmas.
Yuk. This is not head to tail cuisine, it is head and tail cuisine. There were no prime cuts of meat to be found anywhere on the menu; only the cuts that people were forced to eat 100 years ago, because they had to sell the better parts of the animal
Lovely meal - best razor clams we've ever eaten
We had a lovely evening here, the service, atmosphere and food were all great. Stand outs for us were the Welsh rarebit which was scrumptious and the razor clams, we've eaten a lot of razor clams in the past, usually in Spain but these were next lev
Fantastic
Great atmosphere and the food was excellent, staff friendly and helpful. Great night out for my birthday
I'm wowed! We made a reservation and were seated promptly.
The style of this place is to order dishes to share, and this is what we did! We got the smoked mackerel, turbot, oxtail, and eccles cake to share amongst two people. The mackerel was mindblowing! The smoked flavor was strong, and the fish was nice a
On a recent visit to London, we enjoyed St.
John's innovative, ingredient-driven approach to British food.Smoked cod roe on toast with egg was very tasty, but slightly overwhelming at the end due to its size and texture. A combination of soft farm cheese and grilled green onions were unique, b
