Locals love this restaurant and it's not just for tourists! We enjoyed everything we tried so far - cioppino is a must try, fettuccine with smoked salmon is heavenly, and lobster ravioli is well done. Look forward to many more visits in the future.
Be the first to ReplyI understand that the food is incredible here.
I do not live in the area but I have a relative that enjoys the restaurant. Upon attempting to purchase gift certificates for him on the website, it is impossible to do so. Under the tab "gift certificates" there is no way to actually purchase them. It become very frustrating and when I call they always say "we are busy and have to call you back" Never happens. Good to be busy. But please fix your website to enable purchasing of gift certificates so that others can enjoy your restaurant.

First and foremost, I can't believe it took me this long (won't disclose how long...lol) to visit this restaurant! A great date night spot. No reservations available, but highly recommend going early and don't come with a hangry attitude because wait time ranges between 45 min to an hr. Wait time was an hr for my bf & I, so we checked out other bars around the area :) Anyways, let's get into what we ordered! We ordered a dozen of oysters, red and white wine, clam chowder, lobster ravioli, and crab cioppino. Hands down the best cioppino I've ever had!!! It was so so so delicious, 10/10 recommend! (Reason for a 4 star, didn't like that we were seated inches away from the side walk with no barriers to protect our food from bystanders talking over our food. That night was incredibly busy due to many people out celebrating St. Patrick's Day, so you could imagine the amount people passing by our table....) Overall service and food was amazing!
Be the first to ReplyYummy!! The food is so bomb.
Oysters are so fresh. We also got risotto, ravioli, seafood linguine, and their famous cioppino. Everything was on-point. Each dish had a lot of flavor, and nothing tasted greasy. I can't wait to come back.

The crab diavolo is to die for!!! It's definitely a busy restaurant and super super loud. The service is quick and a bit abrupt, but they are still really nice! Their oysters are the best I've had and their clam chowder is super good. All the seafood is amazing and I'd totally recommend this to anyone.
Be the first to ReplyCasual italian-american style seafood.
Got the oysters and cioppino. Oysters were fresh but small and not the most flavorful. The Cioppino was pretty nice and star of the meal. It has a nice tomato broth which was not overpowering which let you eat the seafood without the taste being masked. It had shrimp, calamari, octopus, crab, and penne pasta with a pretty healthy serving for two. It's reasonably priced at $50. The broth/sauce went well with the bread they provided too. While eating the cippiono the servers also offer you a bib to wear to make sure nothing splatters on you.

I came here with really high expectations, and left feeling mostly positive about my experience. I definitely recommend calling the restaurant to get a reservation for an upstairs table. We came at 5 pm without a reservation, and I appreciated that the waitstaff helped us get a last minute table before the later reservations kicked in. (The service is very friendly and attentive.) However, we were seated in the subterranean restaurant level, and I think the lack of natural light/windows combined with the low ceilings and high density seating was kind of off-putting. The upstairs dining area looks festive and fun, and I think it would be preferable to eat there. My dad is a huge cioppino fan, and I was told by friends that I had to bring him to Sotto Mare. He -- of course -- ordered the huge cauldron (pot? vat?) of cioppino. His notes are as follows: - Serving size: Enough for two to three people to share.- Presentation: Fun and refreshing. He had never eaten cioppino from a metal cauldron/pot/vat before. You can request a bib.- Food: Tasty. HOWEVER, he was disappointed that the serving vessel wasn't full of soup, as he expected. The bottom 1/3 to 1/2 of his cauldron consisted of pasta, which expanded and absorbed the cioppino broth as our meal went on.I started off with a side of clam chowder, which was creamy and rich. This dish could be split between two people. I also ordered a fettuccine with smoked salmon. This was a medium sized dish, and I had leftovers to take home with me. The sauce was rich, thick, and creamy. I thought the flavor of the smoked salmon was just right, in that it didn't overpower the alfredo sauce.
Be the first to ReplyI always wanted to come here.
This location comes highly recommended by everyone, and I even saw an episode of Mark Weins eating here when he came to San Francisco.I came in on a Saturday, and the wait was about an hour. They do require you to leave a credit/debit card for the small machine that buzzes when your seating becomes available.Nothing but smiles and excellent service. The waitstaff is extremely attentive and knowledgeable. The restaurant was full all night! For appetizers, I ordered 2 different kind of oysters they were both delicious! And the star of the show the chiopinno omg the chiopinno. It included shrimp, clams, mussles, baby scallops, penne pasta, and crab all in a wonderful tomato broth. It was extremely flavorful.I believe the pricing is fair because of the portion size and flavor. They have repeat business! Don't forget to tip and take care of the hardworking staff!
Be the first to ReplyKiller Ciopinno loaded with crab.
Sat at the bar, house was packed on a Monday - great atmosphere. All around good time.

I had the cioppino, and my best friend had shrimp and scallops. Both was amazing. Great atmosphere and great staff. I will go back again for sure. I love how they hand wrote out the tickets too.

Visited Sotto Mare based on the reviews, food was okay but not worth for 4 or 5 stars because of the poor service. Another one star off from my review because of the ambiance. Food is as good as described.
Be the first to ReplyThis is a seafood restaurant that gets seafood.
We sat at the bar which runs the length of the restaurant so you can watch the beer and wine service or the kitchen action. The seafood is fresh and the cioppino was excellent. Lots of crab, mussels, clams, calamari, small scallops, small and large shrimp, and penne, all in a wonderful red sauce. The bread is crusty and soft and great for sopping up the sauce. The staff is friendly and engaging. Prices are very reasonable. This place is a winner.

Came here for the first time a few weeks ago for group dinner for 14 and it was amazing! Everything we ate was delicious! Our server didn't seem very friendly and like she may have had a lot on her mind. She skipped a few people when taking orders and it felt like we were bothering her. That aside the food was 10/10. This was packed, and I can definitely see why.Born and raised in the peninsula and never eaten here. I can't wait to be back for a date night!
Be the first to ReplyGreat fun and really yummy seafood dishes.
Lots to choose from the menu. The wait staff is attentive and love the open kitchen.

third time at sotto mare and can't get enough of their fettuccine with bay scallops. i love how they don't overdo the sauce and it's not as thick and creamy as other places, so your stomach still feels normal afterwards. they give SO many bay scallops and they're small so i'm super sure they're fully cooked boston clam chowder is also solid :) i'll be back to try linguine with seafood!

The food is amazing and great service! It's not the best good looking restaurant but it's a great experience over all.
Be the first to ReplyGot the salmon linguini and it was fine.
I liked the portion as well as the generous amount of salmon they put in. You really could get a bite of the fish with each bite of the pasta. I ordered delivery so can't comment on the service or ambiance. My friend got the seafood risotto which was good but a bit on the salty side.

Wow! Wow ! Wow ! Despite living in and visiting SF often - I have always wanted to eat at Sotto Mare and finally made it - and it was absolutely worth it!As a party of three, we called ahead and made a reservation which is worth it as it's always packed We were seated immediately and it's such a cool atmosphere with a view of the cook line and perhaps the most chill head chef ever!We went old school with a bottle of house Chianti and began with really good and perfectly shucked oysters and the BEST Carb Louis salad I have ever had - huge amount of crab for a really great price! Then we enjoyed two classic dishes - my daughter had Clams Linguine which was absolutely fantastic and we had their iconic Cioppino which is a must try dish here and amazing!!Definitely worth many visits!!
Be the first to ReplyThis restaurant was great overall.
The waiter and staff were extremely nice to us and we felt right at home. We were seated outside and it was also extremely nice. The food was good, but it could've been a bit better - the oysters we ordered were a bit too salty and one of them had sand in it. The crab cioppino was decent but the soup was a little too rich for me.

I needed a seafood spot that would fit into our company's travel policy (not big bucks). We all enjoyed our orders with an emphasis on the salmon dishes, the Crap Cioppino and everyday wines at $10/glass.For app I ordered the clam chowder and it was good but pretty dang filling - be careful you don't kill your appetite. We also ordered West Coast oysters. They were OK but very small and you can definitely taste the Ocean. The only thing we didn't like was the Oyster shooters - feel free to skip those.
Be the first to ReplyIt was our first time trying cioppino.
I would def go back and get this again, although be warned it can get messy. A bowl of this and appetizer of clams was enough food for two, and it was very good food. They have effectively mastered this dish over the years.

We were excited about their cioppino after watching a YouTube video. Not believing the order served two people, we ordered 4 of them for take out. They came in 4 plastic pails and bread. Since the pails were not full, we had no idea how much we went overboard. Three of us finished all the foods in 4 days. Definitely need to take a break from cioppino. Delicious and worth it.
Be the first to ReplyService: Service could have been better.
Although they were attentive, they weren't very friendly (even to each other). Food: They start you off with complementary bread and you have the option to make the lil olive oil and balsamic vinegar mix Italian places always have. The bread was not warm at all once we got it, I can't remember if it used to be baked and warm before when I used to come here. The risotto with seafood is so good. Appearance-wise, when I first saw it, I was kinda lowkey thinking my home-made risotto was going to beat it, but once I took a bite, everything changed. This surpassed all my expectations. Everything down to the texture, flavor, and variety was nailed. All I can say is, if you're coming here, don't doubt that seafood risotto. The Fettuccine with bay scallops on the other hand, looked very good, but once I bit into it, the lack of seasoning was evident. I ended up just putting a bit of black pepper in there to kick up the flavor a bit. Tip: We came here in between lunch and dinner time so we were seated really quick.
Be the first to ReplyI first visited this place 12 years ago with a friend.
When we arrived, there was a line, so I think the owner came out and started giving everyone a glass of wine while we waited. I ordered the Cioppino during that visit, and it was excellent.Today, I the fish of the day, which was a Monkfish served in a creamy tomato sauce with blistered cherry tomatoes and fresh herbs. With it came a side of buttery white wine risotto. The Monkfish was beautifully prepared, and the first taste of the tomato sauce mixed with a bit of the risotto made me want to cry it tasted so good. I had a small bottle of Chinotto, which was really a lovely alternative to my normal beer or wine. It was a perfect day and a perfect meal.

this place is located in north beach next to Golden boy Pizza. I have been here maybe 10 times and the food is always delish. this time I ordered the crab salad, streamed clams and mussels and a couple shooters and of course lots of sourdough and butter. washed it down with couple of classes of wine. Sometimes the wait is kind of long, there is a bar next door that the pager will work at to let you know your table is ready.
