NOBODY TOLD ME THIS WAS TAPAS
I had heard so much about Son of a Gun I was excited to try it. Swing and a MISS. This restaurant should be ashamed of the food they serve, the prices they charge for it and then for charging 18% on TOP of the bill that is NOT a gratuity. The food was horrendous. Not one dish to save the next. Felt like eating at a frat house. The best part of our meal was the sparkling waterโฆ Also itโs not because you say โsliced breadโ in French that it isnโt still sliced bread. These guys spent a dollar at 7-11 for a loaf of white bread two weeks ago and are still serving it up as โpain de mieโ, which is, you guessed it: sliced bread. Do yourself a favour and go to jack in the box. They wonโt charge you $18 for the same sandwich. And they might crack a smile while youโre there.
Be the first to ReplyServer asking for tips on top of 18% service charge while providing horrible customer service !!!
This 1 star review is for the horrible service provided by a tall and big gentleman who was working today (1/22/2022) between 1:45 pm to around 4:30pm. The gentleman seemed like he was in a bad mood or having a bad day since we checked in. After we sat down at our table he was not very attentive, our order ended up being taken by another very friendly lady with long hair.
We ordered a big eye tuna, 1 Maui dip, 3 lobster rolls, broccoli, 1 fish with rice, 4 latte, sparkling water and hot water. The gentleman repeatedly asked "you want dessert or you want your check" around 4:00pm while we were still finishing the dishes we ordered. Our check was sent to our table without asking. The check showed clearly that they charged 18% service charge and that additional tips are welcome if you have a fantastic experience. At first we did not add additional tips on the merchant receipt. Then the gentleman came back with a rude attitude telling us that "gratitude is not included on the check". We asked for the original invoice then the friendly lady delivered the original invoice to us. We pointed out that it shows 18% service charge already charged on our check. We are willing to pay additional tips if the experience is good, but it was far from fantastic. We ended up adding additional $28 as tips but we told the lady to keep it all to herself as the gentleman was so mean, so rude and so not customer centric !!!!! Again We don't think we deserve that kind of horrible customer service while paying 32% of tips !!!! Very disappointed and you have lost a group of loyal customers due to the negative dine in experience !!!
Food was good as usual and I come here often but I don't think I will come back anytime soon or ever again due to the negative experience today. There are so many new restaurants with creativity, high quality food & beverages and much better service.
Parking is not so easy so recommend to arrive 15 mins in advance to find parking
Chicken sandwich of course but watch out for hidden 18% service fee in fine print
I have a couple of chicken sandwich connoisseurs in my house, and we think the regular chicken sandwich and Nashville hot chicken sandwich are worth the trip. Please take the hidden 18% fee off - I'm happy to tip the server but don't know if they even benefit from this fee.

This restaurant should be ashamed of itself. Son of a Gun used to be one of my favorite restaurants in LA but they have recently started charging a hidden 18% service fee that is buried on the menu in fine print. Typically you're lead to believe that this fee automatically adds a tip for your server, which would be fine, but when we were given the bill we were informed that this fee is not a tip and if you don't leave anything additional your server will not be tipped. Apparently the fee is used to pay workers higher wages but according to our server, the servers don't see any of it. You're then left with the decision to either stiff the server or tip an additional 15-20% on top of the 18% you were already charged. We chose the later as our server definitely did not deserve a 0% tip but we left feeling ripped off and swindled.
We're all feeling the effects of the pandemic, especially restaurants. However, secretly charging an 18% service fee that customers are not made aware of until they're given the bill isn't the way to solve your problems. If anything it will make your previously loyal customers, like myself, to never return.
Solo Covid Dining
I had a night to myself so decided to make a reservation for one on a weekday night. Everything was awesome. The menu was special and somewhat limited. I had the tomato/miso/corn salad which was incredible. It had the right amount of acidity and sweetness with some savory flavors in there too. Then I had the Nashville hot chicken sandwich. Holy. S&^t. That sandwich is insane. My hands were so messy by the end, but was well worth it. The crispiness of the chicken and the bun and the lettuce and the sauce and the spice-- heaven in your mouth (maybe a little kick of Hell...)
I had the coconut sorbet for dessert. Everything was delicious. The server wore a face shield and the proper COVID attire, and often checked in on me.
The one thing I would comment on constructively, which really may be outside the restaurant's control, is their outdoor dining situation. The table felt a bit sticky and wobbly, and was on the sidewalk of 3rd, which isn't the most nice. I was often checking to see if someone was gonna swipe my food walking by. I wish there was an alternative location for their outdoor dining set up, perhaps in their back lot, but maybe they can only work with what they're given.
OVERALL-- HIGHLY RECOMMEND. It's not great for those with allergies like dairy/gluten-free. This is definitely a cheat meal. Prices were moderate.
Extraordinary sandwiches, yummy desserts
We were recommended by an LA friend and it was a terrific suggestion. Delicious starters, incredible fries (a fry is a fry? No, not really, these are unique!) and sandwiches that were over the top, not just in size, but in taste and in quality of ingredients. The dessert menu was too tempting to ignore and their take on key lime pie, which was a frozen lime mousse on a bed of grahan cracker crumbs was worth every decadent calorie. The prices may seem a little on the high side but you absolutely get what you pay for in quality, imagination and service.
Be the first to ReplyDelicious, Loud, and Fun
All three words in the title of review apply, so if loud isn't your thing (and it usually isn't mine), don't bother. But the food is SO good, SO interesting, SO thoughtfully prepared, and the small place (42 ? seats) is so cozy that the only noise you'll hear is your own purring with delight. Their lobster rolls are miniatures bites of perfection, the fried chicken sandwich is a party in your mouth, and the delicate raw foods are so lovingly thought-out that you won't regret one little night of talking louder than usual. Reservations are a must, but there is bar seating, inside and out, that's first come first served. There's no place to wait except outside, but Third Street is nice and (shameless plug) Tina's Nails across the street is my go-to manicure spot.
Be the first to ReplyThe chicken burger will take
The chicken burger will take you back time after time along with the exceptional salads and has a real buzz worth the wait if itโs busy ..
Be the first to ReplyDelicious food! A wonderful meal!
I went with two friends, and we shared six different dishes. It was perfect. Excellent service also. I hope to go there again get next time I am in LA.

Love this restaurant! Amazing food, especially the fried chicken sandwich and lobster sliders/roll. Very small inside so definitely get a reservation.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent restaurant
We had booked the day before and that evening we were tired , not really keen to go . But at the end we decided to go . So we were not easy to be made happy . The menu is short ( always a promising indication of a good restaurant ) , service is attentive , friendly without excess . That night we did not want to take a full bottle of wine and the wine they offer by the glass was quite reasonable . We both took fish and we liked the way it was cooked . A kind of fusion well mastered .
Overall you will not regret .
