Solare San Diego Reviews from The Last Year
When the much anticipated San Diego Magazine Best
When the much anticipated San Diego Magazine Best Restaurants of 2024 list finally dropped last week, I couldn't start my search for reservations fast enough. Not surprisingly, I'd been to many on the list and agree with their placement as critic and audience favorites. This place had escaped us, so we tried it last Friday night for the first time. Located in Liberty Station, this old-world style Italian eatery makes you feel like you're in a family-owned, authentic venue like you actually might find if you were wandering around in Tuscany. It looks like it's been in that space for 50 years, for better or worse. Pedro was an attentive and accommodating server. As for the food? It was pretty good. We split a Ceasar and a veggie soup, I had the sea bass special (a little dry but happy for the healthy option) and Husband had their signature shrimp ravioli, but he ordered a pizza after his meal due to his servings not being adequate to assuage his hunger. We had wine, no dessert, and spent $200 with tip. While we did enjoy our meal, I can't say I'd rave about this place. The other restaurants on the list are in a different realm, I won't mention them here but they're all pretty high end. This was comfort food. Which is great! Just not what we expected. Friends of mine say the owner is well-connected with the food critic circle, so perhaps there's more at play than just the food? You be the judge!

It was at least 10 years ago when I visited this restaurant for the first time. It's good to come back again. This Michelin Guide Italian restaurant has cozy vibes and good pasta The mousse and tiramisu were the highlight at the end of the meal. Follow me @bonn_voyager for more.
This is for sure a 5 star restaurant.
We had guests in from NYC for a week. We took them and my father in law to celebrate his 98 year old birthday. He had the butternut soup and the steak eaten the whole thing. We shared a cheese pizza as appetizer which was definitely a hit. So much so that we returned later in week for just pizza. Food and service was top notch. Already planning our next visit.
Went for restaurant week in SD.
Ossobuco was suuuuuuper tender and fell off the bone and risotto was cooked perfectly. Loved their selection of cocktails as well!
Outstanding service and food.
Servers were polite and efficient. The chef was great. We had a party of 10 and we were all served in a timely manner.

From the moment you step inside, you're greeted with the inviting aroma of freshly baked bread and simmering sauces. The ambiance is cozy yet elegant, with rustic wooden tables adorned with checkered tablecloths, evoking images of Italian countryside. I ordered a delicious lasagna and my girlfriend ordered pizza.
Pretty great service and friendly staff.
Food came out quickly. We went for Saturday lunch at 12pm. Not too busy. We ordered 3 appetizers and 2 desserts. All of the dish are great except for the focaccia bread was weird. It's so thin and does not taste like the focaccia I know. The bread was salty to my taste though overall still is a good appetizer. Surprisingly the calamari dish was not salty and I liked it! I did not use the sauce but my friend said it was good. The tiramisu was super cute and came from a pot. However, the cocoa sugar on top was just weird. The granular sugar + cocoa sort of made the tiramisu downgraded. I like the flavor but not the top texture. The lady fingers were also too soggy. Honestly I can make better tiramisu but the way they present it was awesome! We both like the orange flavored pudding style cake better (sorry don't remember the name - I have a hard time reading the Italian menu name). Overall the experience was great. We sat outside and it was a really nice time
Fantastic food.
Owners are involved in day to day running of restaurant which gives a small town feel. Great ambiance and service.

The food tonight was outstanding! Armando at the bar is knowledgeable and so professional!! He recommended some top choices. The restaurant is so charming and inviting! Sitting at the bar gives you a preview to the best dishes and wine pairing. Let him guide you to the best dishes! You can't go wrong with the chef specials. I took home a great bottle of wine from the boutique. Parking is easy and free.
Great Italian restaurant
This is a great restaurant by any standards. It is located in Liberty Station, which to us adds to the experience. We were sitting outside, which was plenty warm and in some ways better than inside. The menu is Italian/European and quite tasty. All in all, this is a place we'll definitely return to.
Solare is a Local Treasure - EAT HERE!
Once again, Solare is the best! Six of us enjoyed a truly magical holiday evening with perfect corner seating (we could hear each other talk) and excellent food: fantastic and huge tomahawk pork, scrumptious fish special in amazing sauce, and tasty fettuccine with shrimp. Portion sizes are great. Wine selection was endless and the wine steward came out and gave us a great wine history lesson. Our server, Julia, was excellent, attentive, yet never rushing us. We enjoyed a long, leisurely Christmas get-together that was really memorable. We all will be back!
Slice of Verona on a Sunday!
Sunday afternoon with friends for a fabulous wine lunch. Matching wines from Verona Italy ! 1857 they have perfected wines and food Superiore!
Fantastic meal
We had a group of 8 go to dinner and it was fantastic! Each one of us enjoyed our meal immensely. The appetizers, salads, main course, and dessert were well thoughtfully prepared and delicious. There was an extensive wine list and the recommendations were spot on. I would highly recommend Solare for a great meal.
Quality and service is slipping. Not the same!
Not the same! The quality is slipping and service is lacking. We started with the Arancini al Tartufo. This use to be our favorite. The arancini's were the size of a nickel, I kid you not. Talk about skimping. They should be the size of golf balls. I assume they were running low on the risotto so they decided to skimp and make them smaller, but charge us the same price. Definitely not an authentic Italian dish. Italy would laugh and such a stupid looking dish. The Bolognese was subpar. The bottle of red wine we ordered was warm. Nothing worse than drinking a bottle of warm red wine. They obviously do not have proper wine storage. Needless to say, we will not return. In my opinion, there is nothing authentic about Solare. It use to be better. Seems there is a change of chefs or something. There are way too many authentic Italian restaurants in San Diego to choose from. This one doesn't cut it. It's not fit for us foodies and our foodie friends. We will not be coming back.
Fab Italian restaurant with gluten free options
Excellent Italian restaurant, with many gluten free options. Our daughter loved the freshly baked gluten free bread and gluten free pasta with marinara. Pizzas on GF base also available. Marsala chicken and beef filet were both delicious. Several GF dessert options- the panna cotta was sensational!
