...approached the hostess stand and asked if it was ok to enjoy a glass of wine outside- I wanted to enjoy the sunny day. The hostess was very accommodating and pleasant HOWEVER- a waiter later approached and asked if I was ready to order.... I told him I was just having a glass of wine.... He was very rude and stated that I needed to order food if I'm sitting at a table.. that "It was the rule"... I explained that I specifically stated to the hostess my desire to just have a glass of wine and sit outside-- he "huffed" and said " well, since you are already here you can stay" and walked away. Later, when he gave me my bill he attempted to be pleasant... too late buddy. I complained to management prior to leaving... just got an insincere apology. I t was my birthday... just wanted to enjoy the day..... later went to MiMi's for dinner-- they know how to treat customers and the food is great!!
Be the first to ReplyThe boyfriend made reservations here for a birthday
The boyfriend made reservations here for a birthday celebration the day of (it's a Sunday though). We were seated once we arrived and the servers were very helpful. To start, we got the 3 Shrimp Cocktail ($19) and Thick Cut Steakhouse Bacon ($21). The shrimp was good and plump, but definitely pricey for just 3 pieces. I was told the bacon is a must here, but it was a bit too roasted and charred for me that it dried out the meat. We also got a bowl of complimentary bread, but most of it were a bit stale and hard to enjoy. Then came the main entrees and I got the Filet Mignon ($57/$64 --not sure which cut I got since they never asked?) with Lobster Tail ($15). I love me a surf and turf, so this is the perfect combo. The steak was cooked nicely at medium rare, but needed the steak sauce for extra flavor. The lobster was solid, but also really needed the butter for flavor too. The 15oz lobster ($72) seemed like a lot, but wasn't much. We also had the Bone-In Ribeye Steak ($78), which had a lot of fatty pieces. I can't say the meal impressed me much, but the Good Humor Strawberry Shortcake ($15) was the most memorable part. I love the ice cream bar, so it was fun to see it as a cake with the strawberry crumble for the crust. I'm inbetween a 3 or 4 for this spot, but just wasn't too impressed as I found more things I didn't like. For the price point, I'd opt for another option before this.

Went for dinner here tonight and celebrated my husbands birthday. Really appreciated the ambiance and service. Loved the seafood tower to start. Drinks were great, wine selection very good. My husband loved his steak and I loved my lobster. Sides and dessert were ok but really the main dish and seafood tower were the stars.. as they should be.

Just happened to enjoy the $20 spring wine week with my family this week. My wife and son were first impressed by the lobster salad appetizer. Our waiter was very attentive regarding the wine selection. The reservation at an early morning (11:45 am) was very friendly and crowded. We considered the following meals: Cajun rib steak for my son, which he enjoyed; my wife liked the halibut fish order and I had the prime rib, that was cooked perfectly. The side dishes were mashed potatoes and broccoli, okay nothing wrong with the choices. Our dessert of three carrot cakes were ordered to go. My general assessment is that there was just too much wine at that time of day but you cannot beat the price!

Be the first to ReplySo disappointing.
Went for my sister's birthday and the waiter was rushing us the entire evening, no time to explain things, and that was before the restaurant got completely packed. It was a Friday night, and I understand it gets really busy. There were not a lot of people there we first arrived and no one came to our table to offer water or anything. We had to call someone. Not the typical service I expected at Smith and Wolinsky. I've been to other locations and they were fabulous. The food was OK, I had to return my steak. It wasn't the right temperature. The others in my party also had the same problem, but just kept their steaks anyway. I would never go back to this restaurant. Disappointing.
Be the first to ReplyDefinitely a NY staple, this steakhouse does not disappoint.
Although it's not one my favorite steaks in the city, the service, food and everything about it is really good. I went during the unlimited wine Valentine's weekend and had a great time! Wedge Salad ~~ A solid. The sauce is a bit too 'mayonnaise'y' to my taste, but I loved the crispy bacon bits. Thick Bacon ~~ Delicious. Probably my favorite thick bacon in the city. Porterhouse Steak ~~ It was cooked to perfection. The taste was delicious it did not need any sauce whatsoever. So good. Throughout the dinner, the waiter kept on pouring the wine and was always available for any questions or anything we needed. Loved our experience.

For all the pomp and circumstance around steak restaurants, it's always ultimately about the quality of the food and service. Which is why eating at the bar is my favorite part of S&W. Same quality food, possibly even better more friendly and welcoming service, and a great ambiance.
Be the first to ReplyWe really don't have many nice things to say about this
We really don't have many nice things to say about this place. We made a reservation remembering the nostalgia of old school service, tasty cocktails and delicious fare. After arriving to the restaurant, we were told to wait in the bar. I ordered a Last Word at the bar, having spotted one of the key ingredients to make a Last Word on the bar shelf. After speaking with the bartender to confirm he had the Luxardo maraschino liqueur plus Chartreuse, gin and lime I ordered it. I knew as soon as he gave it to me it was wrong. The color and drink were wrong. That was the first reason for my discontent. We were told our table was ready so I settled up with the bartender. The bill was $22 for 1 martini. Insane pricing!! We shared 2 entrees and some sides plus 2 sub par dirty martinis with stingy little olives. For the price of the food and drink, we expected bigger quantities and outstanding taste. There was a lack of both. Come on, $16 for two stalks of broccoli is a crime! Once the server saw that our order was on the small side he proceeded to never check back with us or ask if we wanted refills on drinks throughout the evening. We were so disappointed in the service that one of us in the party complained to management. The manager did nothing to assuage us feeling snubbed due to the server being non-attentive and could have cared less about our table since we weren't big spenders. Granted our bill was close to $300 and would have been more if the service had been better. Needless to say, we don't have a desire to ever go back to this establishment.

Guy host with the tux on 49th street side entrance is rude and slightly racist. Other than that - great food , service and atmosphere.
Be the first to ReplyThe food was just ok.
They offer a lot of choice with crab cakes, clam chowder and oysters. However The tomato Barata was very basic. It was fresh tomatoes, Borracho, red onion and a little bit of herbs with an oil dressing. Not very complex or tasty. The steak was done well but extremely overpriced. I know prices have gone up recently but they just served the steak on a plate. Sides were minimum $15 each and they were also just quite basic in terms of preparation and taste. It was not a bottle of wine under $55. The service was good but as soon as we paid the bill they just seem to want us to leave. we were a large party and they did not seem willing to divide up the bill according to what each person had ordered. Normally this would not be a big deal but because of the surcharge of prices you would think that the service would be more accommodating.Disappointed and we will not go back again.

Ate here for a dinner event - stuff was friendly and attentive. Steaks (I had a filet mignon) were seasoned and cooked well. Sides were...sides. For dessert I would steer towards cheesecake - it was a nice finish after a steak dinner

The portions are really big! We ordered the porterhouse, which was too much for two people. The tenderness of the tenderloin and sirloin was mind blowing it tasted like an authentic, american steak platter, and paired with the sautéed spinach and oyster mushrooms, that's my favorite and I couldn't have been more content! And do not skip out on the seafood tower!!! so tasty and fresh, and a nice, lighter contrast to the steak!
Be the first to ReplyReally was a disappointment.
We went for dinner before going to the theater hoping to have a nice steak house experience. While I get these places are crowded and loud the host did a horrible job in seating tables. Our waiter seemed to get one table after another before the host started seating people in the next waiters section. Our waiter had 4 tables seated in about 7 minutes. The table next to us was seated after us, in another waiters section, had their order taken before the table that was seated in our section before we were. So only one star for host.Let's get to the nitty gritty about the food. We ordered appetizers of oysters which were excellent. I've never had oysters served with freshly grated horseradish, a vinaigrette and cocktail sauce. I've discovered my new favorite way to eat oysters fresh horseradish and a squeeze of lemon. The other appetizer was a hard NO tuna tartar was just not pleasant. It consisted of chopped tuna with what seemed like an excessive amount of tomato, extra strong scallions and an unpleasant taste perhaps too much Worcestershire sauce. The Steak was good, not the best I've had but it was well aged porterhouse for two. Nice size and well cooked. Finally the side dish of roasted Brussels sprouts were very disappointing. They were roasted with bacon and an oddly sweet lemon flavor. We didn't eat much of them. At no point did our waiter check to see how our food was, clearly he had a section that was seated too closely together. No one asked us if we like our food despite the fact that we didn't eat half of our Tartar and Brussels sprouts. They say reservation is for 11/2 hours. We were there for 1 hour and 20 min and there was no way they would have come by for a dessert order. We ended up waving down the runner/bus boy to get our check. $250 for a very disappointing dinner.I will not go back there are so many better Steakhouses in the city specifically my current favorite Mastros on 6th.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent service.
Top notch quality steakhouse. This is such a classic spot. We had a porterhouse, the amazing cajun ribeye and the top sirloin. From cocktail were colossal! We also had some amazing desserts. Highly recommended
Be the first to ReplyWe came here for their wine dinner on a Saturday night.
At the very least, this is a wonderful deal for a good steak dinner without having to skip out on other courses or drinks. The steak was delicious but I was not super impressed by the fried calamari. It was not crispy and had no dipping sauce with it. As a table, we tried one of each dessert, and all of them were really good and large portions. We noticed that other tables that we were not the only ones who could not finish desert after the meal, not being used each of us having our own. Personally, I would've preferred an included side instead of a dessert. The volume in the upstairs dining area made it difficult to even converse with her friends. Not sure if this was a product of our corner table or the entire upstairs. The wine was decent, but they greatly delayed pouring the first glass and were quick to cut you off after dessert was served. If you were in the mood for a steak dinner and don't want to cut corners, this dinner is a great option. However, if you want sides, those will be extra. Either way the bill will be a hefty one for dinner.

There's a lot of steakhouses that are just as good or even better. Peter Lugers , ole homestead , Gallagher's, Morton and Sparks, Wolfgang.I would go with Gallagher's steakhouse, nice atmosphere, service is excellent and dry aged !
Be the first to ReplyWe have been coming here for years and it is still great.
Rib steak was perfectly cooked. The S&W wine was outstanding. We love it.

My partner and I came for a Valentine's celebration and were blown away by the meal. The food was delectable, and our waiter, Sam, was fantastic. We each ordered a cocktail, both of which were strong and large, and received a bread basket with whipped butter. I tried not to fill up too much on bread knowing the meal we had coming up but the pretzel roll was delicious. Onto the appetizer- we settled on the thick cut bacon. We got 3 large slices which was more than we expected, but they were probably the best steakhouse bacon I've ever had.Onto the main course: we chose to split a Cajun Rib steak, cooked medium rare. The seasoning was delicious and steak cooked perfectly. We ordered two sides (mac and cheese and hash browns), both also amazing. The Mac and cheese had a very subtle blue cheese flavor in it (even though I am not I fan of blue cheese) which was a nice touch, and the hash browns were crispy. Finally, dessert. We were torn between 2, but Sam strongly recommended the Bourbon Pecan Pie sunday, which even came with tiny pieces of pecan pie on it. The little slices of pie and Bourbon pecan glaze were sooooooo good.Overall, we had a fantastic date night meal here. The service was great, food delicious. I'll definitely be recommending to friends looking for a nice night out.

I have been here before a few years ago back in 2018 and everything was good but when I was taken here for my birthday on 4/2/22 for a reservation at 8:15pm. We weren't seated for an hour, I mean what's the point of a reservation? While waiting we had some drinks at the bar there was a waiter going around with horderves and would keep going to the same group do people and my friend had to go and talk to him to find out why is he not going around to everyone? The guy was pretty nasty replying "I'll get to you when I can" We were seated and our waiter was wearing someone else's coat and wasn't sure who our servers name was. Appetizers came out promptly it then we had to wait forever before our steaks came out. I ordered filet mignon medium rare and it came out raw. I ate some and took the rest home to heat up to my liken, I never experienced such explosive diarrhea in my entire life! I thought I had C. Diff. and I was sick for a couple of days and had to miss a day of work. Restaurant is not what it used to be and I wouldn't recommend eating here.

Classic Manhattan steakhouse that has been here for decades and has a loyal clientele. Certainly not the best steak you'll have in the city but it always satisfies and you know what to expect.
Be the first to ReplyHorrible service.
Waiters hovered obsequiously over every table around us but ours. Almost felt like a personal affront. Came in For a late Friday dinner for two. They charged us for the bigger steak without asking which size we wanted. We weren't served anything for 45 minutes, and we were visibly ignored. They did not serve us water until at least half an hour later despite asking twice. The bread in the bread basket was soggy and cold. Cramped seating. Miserable experience, never again.
