Six by Nico Edinburgh Reviews from The Last Year
Very average
Very average. Unlikely to return. Six courses plus an additional one to start and neither of us had a warm plate for any of the courses. I had to ask if I could have a drink as no menu on our table. Amateurs just trying it on. And the additional couple of pounds towards the bosses favourite charity on the bill. What’s that all about…
Poor, Misleading and Overpriced
I attended your Edinburgh restaurant last night to trial the New York menu. I booked after seeing your advertisement on instagram that stated £32pp. On this basis I booked the table. We attended the restaurant and were extremely under satisfied, the menu we thought to be £32 was actually £42pp there were add ons to our bill that we had not been informed about £2 to a charity and 12.5% service charge. This service charge I would not have paid as the service was really not good. The staff that were giving the information about each dish were quiet, sounded incredibly uninspired and when you could hear information they were giving, it was a load of what seemed like made up on the spot waffle that we’d have been as well not being able to hear anyway. Two members of staff also had a strong overpowering stench of body odour so much so that it actually put us off our food on the dishes they served. Understandably they will work long hours but the restaurant should put in measures to ensure hygiene standards are being met which on this occasion they definitely were not met. Disgusting. Overall an extremely unsatisfying experience and a misleading waste of money that didn’t match up to the basic restaurant standards. At times we felt as if we were in a college eatery where the students attempt to make a pop up restaurant to practice their service skills.
Disappointing Food
This is my second time at Six by Nico and probably my last. I went a few years ago and thought the food was great, but the New York menu was really disappointing. I don't mind the small portions and I like that the fine dining experience is more accessible (although they have had a price hike since my last visit), but I found the food this time to be really lacklustre. The first course had a charcoal cookie that was so dense and flavourless that it made the course sickly, the fish course was poor, all courses came out cold, and the dessert had no flavour or texture. The lobster roll at an additional £10 each was worse than a supermarket prawn mayo sandwich. There were some flashes of brilliance like the pesto on the chicken course and the BEC course was great. It's an expensive meal out and so expectations are (rightly) higher, but unfortunately I've had much better and cheaper pub meals.
Overpriced crumbs of a meal
After hearing good things about this restaurant we were both avidly excited. However on receiving our set meals we were both extremely disappointed. Food was not that great, the taste was bland and portions were absolutely tiny for the price you are paying. This type of restaurant is not for people with good taste just to much to spend. I could not fault the staff they were great. The couple sat next to us after receiving their meal stated they were going for a chippy afterwards- that they would also most likely enjoy the chippy more than this experience. Despite having a 70 pound voucher this ridiculously priced establishment cost us well over 130 pound for the crumbs of a meal and a few drinks. AVOID- there is so much better places in Edinburgh that are far more value for money.
First visit
We visited tonight for the first time for my husband's birthday and were generally impressed. The food and wine were served in good time and the staff were knowledgeable about the dishes being served. The food could have been hotter and by booking early we should have been given a welcome drink and snacks however these were not forthcoming.
Too busy to care, warning DO NOT come if you want good service or good food.
The experience was so disappointing, the hostess was rude, despite our table not being ready, she was cold, unapologetic and expected us to go and wait elsewhere but expected us back in 10 minutes not a minute longer. No apology despite us leaving and coming back, still no welcome, an embarrassment to the establishment. The experience was salvaged by the waitress, Faith, even she could not save the cold food being served within 5 mins of each course. Did not even manage to finish the wine before the next course arrived and then to add further insult, we were told to vacate our table for the next sitting despite being seated late for our reservation. Despite making it clear on the reservation and telling the waitress that one of the party had a severe nut allergy, we were still given pesto, luckily we were able to catch this being eaten. Not the level of service you would expect in this current climate. They are clearly too busy to care. Do not waste your money. This is a conveyor belt where the team are unable to treat you as a respected guest. £300 for 4 people is not value for money when the food is cold and the welcome was even colder.
Don’t waste you money, go to an independent restaurant that values your custom
A very poor start to the evening, met by a rude and miserable hostess our table wasn’t ready no apology from her, nowhere to wait for your table, you need to leave the restaurant. No apology when we returned either, she didn’t smile once throughout our entire stay. Our waitress was Faith, she was happy and attentive and did her best to make our evening enjoyable . However the courses were rushed and the members of our party that were having the wine pairing didn’t have time to finish their glasses before the next ones arrived. The food was very average and generally cold. Insult to injury a 12.5% service charge automatically added to your bill . We were there to celebrate our daughter’s 18th Birthday, however the whole experience ruined what should have been a memorable meal. We will not be back
Superb tasting menu of 6 (or 7) courses.
Six by Nico is a restaurant chain offering themed meals consisting of 6 tasting plates. The theme was "Hanoi" and the six courses were a fascinating taste of Vietnam perfectly prepared and served. There was no pressure to rush through the meal.
Hanoi Menu - Highly Recommend
Went to the "Six by Nico - Edinburgh" last Sunday night for middle evening sitting. Menu "Hanoi". All I can say was food was superb, hot & delicious. You can also flip between the Normal Menu & the Vegetable Menu, depending if you have a problem eating fish or meat or any other item on one of the courses. Course 5: Gòi Xoài - Tamarind Glazed Chicken, Sweet Potato Hash, Crispy Chicken Leg & Burnt Mango puree. Good dish, but Crispy Chicken Leg was sublime. Though they all seem small portion, you come out full and satisfied. Staff service was excellent as usual. Recommend, especially this menu.
Worth a visit will definitely be back .
We went to experience the hanoi menu six courses with 2 drinks . The food , flavours and atmosphere was excellent and our waitress Jazmine was so knowledgeable and a delight . Thank you for an excellent experience.
Fantastic Experience Great Service and Food
Amazing experience. Super lunch, fantastic attentive service, beautiful food and lovely ambience. The team are fabulous and deserve a big thank you!!!
Lukewarm, mediocre and u uninspiring.
Disappointing! Lukewarm tasteless food, poor, slow service and mediocre surroundings. Whatever you do don’t be early- you’ll be made to stand by the door until it’s your turn to sit. In our case that was 30 minutes! Added two drinks, a coffee and two small starters and ended up paying an additional £80, including a £20 service charge. Honestly won’t be back, the food was uninspiring, bland and for the most part, lukewarm at best. Only saving grace was the wine pairings which were excellent. Look at the rankings- there are literally hundreds of better places to eat than this which would cost you half as much!
Disappointing experience
I took my best friend here for a tasting menu with a gift card as a birthday treat. If you look at the review below, we were the ‘late’ couple in Edinburgh. In actual fact, we were only a few mins late after our 4:45 booking and had to wait in a queue for ten minutes. As others have mentioned, the waiting area in the foyer is tiny and you have to wait outside until a space is available to enter the restaurant. The front of house was nowhere to be seen during our wait. Once inside, we were seated at the booth next to the front door. We were waiting for ten minutes before being attended to and the waitress took our order from memory, we weren’t convinced that she had processed everything. We had to ask a few times for water and a wine menu. Our first course arrived before our drinks and we had to ask yet again. My water glass had lipstick stains on it and the aperitif drinks were were sickly and warm with no ice. The food itself was beautiful however the main course of pork was mostly fatty as others have mentioned. As feared, our extra of BBQ ribs had been forgotten about - we were advised that we could wait ten minutes for this with no real apology. As a frequent Nico’s customer, I was fairly disappointed. I was aware of the conveyor style plating up for the next sitting as we finished our meal. Starters were piled up for the next customers on the pass as we were waiting for our desserts which were frozen solid. It felt as though the servers were trying their hardest however the volume of customers at the sitting was excessive with the available staff. Such a shame that volume appears to be valued above the experience.
Not sure if I would return again.
I visited here as I had bought a voucher for myself and daughter as a Christmas treat. Other family members had been before and raved about their experience. We arrived 5 minutes before our booking time and joined a large outdoor queue. The couple before us were offered a choice of 3 tables When the same person came to greet as I asked if we could have an internal table or the booth that the previous couple has been offered and turned down. I was then told that this was not an option and we were seated as a very small table opposite the entrance door. This meant that we were so close to the next table that we could hear their whole conversation, to make matters worse the party of 2 behind us was then offered the booth that we had been told we could not have! When I questioned this I was told that this couple arrived late and would be leaving early so was given the booth. Also that they would find us a table away from the draughty door, this did not happen and the host made no contact with us again! In reality the couple who arrive late left after us and no party of 4 arrived at 7 pm so this was very clearly untrue. This was not a great start to the evening and he obviously was not a very people person (or at least not to us). Thank goodness we had our lovely server Faith who made up for this. She was charming , helpful and knowledgable , although rushed off her feet while trying to assist some of her colleagues who were unsure of the courses being served. Had it not been for her service l would have marked our visit even lower. The food was well presented and tasty for the most , we had the vegetarian version and the only course we did not enjoy was the jackfruit which was very chewy with a strange aftertaste. Would I visit again…. I’m not sure , we felt very rushed getting seated about 15 minutes late and then only given 1 hour 45 to eat and leave, the experience given to us by the initial host was very unpleasant. On a positive we made the best of it and our sever was lovely and apologetic when we ordered coffees but advised that we would have to drink very quickly as she needed the table emptied. Not pleasant for her to have to say and frustrating we arrived well before our booking time which should have allowed 2 hours to eat and have a coffee. If you are thinking of visiting six by nico maybe research the branch you are visiting in advance to make you are going to get the best experience.
Has gone downhill. Not value for money or good service
It is sad to see the decline in Six by Nico. This was our second visit with the first being a few years ago. This time around, it was clear to see that standards have slipped. On arriving, there was a queue to get in and, as only 2 people can fit in the foyer at a time, everyone had to stand outside in the cold. If you don't book well in advance, you will be extremely limited on time slots available. We had 9pm on a Sunday evening in February so you can imagine, it was cold outside! The front of house waiter seated us and was friendly and polite. Our server then came over to ask if we wanted water. It is quite loud in the restaurant and hard to hear what they are saying. After I said I did not want water, she left. When she came back, she got our drinks order but we waited a good 10 mins on the drinks to arrive with the first course coming before we got them. The glasses were not clean, the water glass my partner was given had a lipstick mark on it. All of the glasses, cutlery and plates smelled like dirty dishwasher which was extremely off putting when trying to enjoy a meal. The food was served quite slow and you could see the dishes waiting in the open kitchen with the Chef having to call service several times. Staff explain the course to you which is hard to hear given how loud it is and a bit overkill as the menu explains it all. It would be nice to be given the option to skip this part if you are happy just reading the menu. A couple of times, not just our table but others as well, their next course was served before fresh cutlery had been given leaving people waiting to eat their food. The food was okay but nothing special and, in my opinion, not worth £40 per person for what you get. Some of the food was not good quality. The Pork course contained a lot of fatty beef with the pork belly being 100% fat. It is naturally a fattier cut but should still contain some meat % Drinks are also super expensive with a small diet coke coming in at over £3!! When we asked for the bill, we waited 10+ mins for this despite others around asking after us, paying and leaving the restaurant before we even had the bill. The restaurant itself is compact with the tables being squashed in to allow a maximum number of people into the small space. We were seated at a corner table around a square table but were not able to sit directly across from each other, we were placed at either side of the corner on bench seating which I found to be extremely weird. It feels like the whole franchise is expanding and standard are slipping. It was an okay meal but we were still pretty hungry afterwards so definitely not value for money especially considering there are some all you can eat places in the same location offering much better quality for the same price. We won't be rushing back and certainly no longer recommend Six by Nico.
Gave it a try
Finger food on a plate. Dishes were as expected, small but adequate. None were exceptional. Ordered a large glass of wine, got a small one. Staff very friendly, a bit ott. Each dish was explained but could not hear what was being said. Did not detract from meal as menu explained each dish adequately. Good atmosphere. Toilets barely adequate, very small (cosy) but clean.
Very Disappointed
I am writing this review on behalf of my parents who came to your restaurant yesterday. They were given a gift voucher as their Christmas gift from my daughters and although cringing when they told me, because they knew how much we'd spent on it, they said they were extremely disappointed and wouldn't be in a hurry to come back even though they've been before and thought it was good. Course 2 - mushroom. It was actually making both my Mum and Dad feel sick. They said it tasted of vinegar and my Mum couldn't actually eat it. When the waiter came to clear it away he said it was least favourite course too. I understand that might be the case but should you really be telling a customer that? It make it sound like it was a really unpopular course but was still served anyway. Course 5 pork. The pork was non existent and mostly fat and the onion accompaniment wasn't enjoyable. I want to make it clear that neither of my parents are fussy eaters so both felt very disappointed. They're both retired so going out for a meal is treat and this didn't feel like one. On the booking I said it was my Mum's 75th Birthday that day. Now I'm not expecting freebies just because of it being a special birthday but not a mention of it. Why have a comments box on the booking? Neither of my parents were asked if they wanted a drink and when the bill arrived my Dad hadn't even read it, never mind pay for it and he turned around and the waiter was standing with their jackets ready for them to leave. Nothing like making it clear their allocated time is over with! Which out of interest was less than 1.5 hours. Overall really disappointing for them and sadly me too as I bought the voucher. I honestly expected better and am gutted they didn't enjoy it.
Let's be honest.
Everything looks nice-the restaurant and the food, but unfortunately almost every course was bland. There were some interesting moments, and the experience was fun, besides the horrible music that sounded like a wounded Indian man crying in pain for 45 minutes.

Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.
