I came to Shun Lee after I tried to get a table for 2 at every other restaurant around Lincoln Center on a random Tuesday night. Everywhere had an hour wait but Shun Lee was completely empty. I can see why. While the wait staff was incredibly nice, the food is average and the portions are small. For a few appetizers and fried rice, we spent over $100! For the price, I would recommend going elsewhere.

The workers are constantly outside smoking and cackling their spit onto the sidewalk. To see them do that while walking by then returning to work makes me disgusted. Plus, extremely overpriced for their mid food

While the wait staff here was very kind and attentive, this was the only saving grace at Shun Lee West. The quality of the food was atrocious, and the prices were 3-4 times what they should have been given the taste and the portion sizes. We ordered several entrees and side dishes to share, and everything was small and lukewarm. I came here for a special occasion, but the night was entirely thrown off by our dining experience. There are infinitely better Chinese restaurants on the Upper West Side. I suggest that you pass on Shun Lee.
Be the first to ReplyWe had a wonderful family dinner here after Christmas.
The Peking Duck was delicious! We also enjoyed the Garlic Broccoli and Beef Lo Mien. Particularly good were the vegetable steamed dumplings and the shrimp steamed dumpling. The winner was the BBQ pork sticky buns - superb!! Service was great - it was a little loud but an amazing NYC food experience!
Be the first to ReplyGross and obnoxiously overpriced.
How do you screw up scallion pancakes? Truly shocking how bad the food is. Even the plain white rice was crusty and tasteless. The chicken and broccoli was bland and I left feeling wildly unsatisfied. Never going back!

Long long long time customer and was just treated terribly for a pick up order. Placed a large order for Christmas dinner. Called it in spoke to a real person. Confirmed pick up would be an hour. Waited the hour and walked over. Greeted by two giggling twitty women who rudely dismissed me with a wave of the arm when I inquired where to pick up. My 1st time picking up. Waited politely to speak with the counter person among the thirty other people. Was asked if I would be ok waiting another 1.5hrs. Every person there was told a timeframe and then asked to wait an hour more. Really terrible service by Shun Lee. Just shameful. Messing up Christmas dinner for so many people. If you're too busy don't take the order. If I'm not important as a customer perhaps I'll go somewhere else. Maybe Legend 72. Or Redfarm.
Be the first to ReplyThis restaurant is living on borrowed time.
It used to be worth spending a few extra dollars for the quality but it is now officially over the top. Everyone says, oh it's inflation but $26 for a side of greens thats an appetizer size portion and then on top of it they charge for tea now???? What Chinese restaurant does that and tea thats not brewed but a pot of water with two tea bags of ordinary quality... And not that we had it but Peking Duck for $120? R U kidding me? Next time I want really good Chinese, I'll go to Szechuan Garden on 105th and Broadway... way better quality, authentic and a total bargain in comparison... the last meal I will ever eat there... and might I add, lousy inattentive service that needs to be trained better... And, they dont even offer a fortune cookie!
Be the first to ReplyOlder restaurant.
Nice staff. Food fair. Service so so. Nice front staff. A reservation is a must. Big menu. Din sun. Fried rice. Soups. Typical chinese.
Be the first to Replyused to be the best peking duck but tonight.
...the duck must have been nuked. So dry...how a Peking duck can be dry and 6 legs to boot and no skin which is the best part of it. Very disappointed
Be the first to ReplyI can't imagine returning.
Overpriced. Odd and jarring decor. Everything was bland and unremarkable. Everything LOOKS good when it is presented, but when you take a bite, your mouth senses an absence of anything that might make you want a second bite. I take it Shun Lee was, in years past, a great place. Now, well, it's more Sarah Lee. I suspect this is one of those restaurants that endures just because of its location.

We used to come here all the time and we were excited to know the cafe was open. Things have changed. No more carts. Recipes are different. The front door is locked. And prices have certainly increased. My kids used to love the lemon chicken balls - two big crispy but light balls ceremonially drenched in lemon sauce. Now there are three small very crispy - maybe too fried - dense balls served with a small bowl of sauce you spoon over the balls yourself. The crispy beef is good and crispy but again it used to be lighter and more delicate. Rice noodles, our favorite, are only served on weekends now. Disappointing since we were there on a weekday. Not sure we'll rush back like we used to.

Nice place around Lincoln Center! Good for parties and gatherings. The main courses are nice, I wouldn't recommend the dim sum though.
Be the first to ReplyMy family went to this restaurant last Saturday (7/16/22)
My family went to this restaurant last Saturday (7/16/22) for dinner after an event in the Lincoln Center. We ordered 3 foods including an Orange Beef with two bowls of rice. The orange beef was not fresh and very hard to chew. I knew instantly that it was made hours ago, perhaps days ago, kept in the refrigerator and warmed in the microwave oven before brought to me. The brown rice was like a stone (again must have been made days ago), the white rice was a bit better, still not fresh. I enjoyed dining in this restaurant many times, but now the quality has gone down so much that I decided not to go there any more. Everything is very old including the rest room area. The entire restaurant has to be renovated and cleaned up. It was a big disappointment.
Be the first to ReplyOld style NYC Chinese restaurant.
Not bad, but nothing special. The place needs a major redesign to warrant the price.
Be the first to ReplyThis is the best real Chinese restaurant in the West Side.
The shrimp balls were yummy and decadent, the pan fried vegetable dumplings very delicious. The brown rice a little hard.
Be the first to ReplyShocked at Shun Lee West.
For years, friends and I have loved their delicious Beijing Duck. After the pandemic, we were delighted to see the online menu, (updated since Covid) which says the price had risen to $65. So we didn't look at the printed menu before ordering. We were shocked: the bill was $118 for the duck, almost double the price given on the restaurant's own website the day before. So we asked; on the menu, the $118 price was written in ballpoint pen. Though we love the superb service, relative quiet and ambiance, and understand prices are up since the pandemic, we felt this was an unreasonable increase, especially considering that their current website price was almost half what they charged. I have brought many friends there, but we will be trying other restaurants serving this dish that charge appreciably less.

Good basic Chinese food that you could get pretty much anywhere. I expected more from a restaurant carrying the Shun Lee name. Everything was good, nothing was special. The soups and dumplings were ok, The Chicken in Lettuce Leafs, and the Shrimp in Black Bean Sauce were the best we had. Still a star restaurant.
Be the first to ReplyWe went to the restaurant to celebrate my birthday.
I had always wanted to eat there. To say that we were disappointed is an understatement. We started with a waiter that couldn't understand English. We finally were able to order. When the food came we had to remind the waiter to bring the wine we had ordered. The food was tasteless. I have had better at a local chop suey take out. At these prices, we felt that the staff and chefs were just going through the motions and didn't take pride in their work
Be the first to ReplyGood quality but overpriced Chinese-American food.
I guess there's still a place for this?I know Shun Lee has had historic importance in introducing non-Chinese-Americans to Chinese cuisine. And the prices are not that different from a fancy Italian or French place ($23 pasta dishes, $45 fish). But the lack of authentic flavor makes the cost seem excessive: the sea bass with hot bean sauce was not at all spicy and I did not taste/see any beans. It was just a thick sweet sauce. Aside from the waitstaff, we were the only Asians in the dining area.
Be the first to ReplySomeone else gave it a 3 and was being generous.
I guess I feel the same. I'm sure there is an allure to the place. Nice booths, pleasant front of house service, the cool lit paper dragons that surround the dining room. But there is absolutely nothing memorable about the meal, except what you paid for it. My friend and I had a vegetable entree and a broccoli with beef entree. We also shared a thin scallion pancake. That was the most exceptional dish--very tasty. But the two entrees were honestly not upto the level of probably 75% of the Chinese takeout I've had over the years. I swear that's not an exaggeration. Add to that the fact that you're paying 2-3 times the price of takeout for such an average entree, and I have to think a place like this only survives because people are dying for any sit down Chinese food before going to Lincoln Center, or people are celebrating birthdays or anniversaries there (we heard the happy birthday song at least 3 times), or people are dying to eat where they filmed that Wall Street movie. Any of those reasons, I guess I get it. But just too many other better dining options at that price point.
Be the first to ReplyA shadow of its former self.
I missed Shun Lee Cafe during the COVID closure, but was stunned at how it has become a shadow of its former self. Attentive service was still there, but the quality of the food has plummeted. Overcooked dumplings, rice noodle, crab claw made parts of the meal barely edible. The hot and sour soup were fine - at triple the price and equal quality to a local takeout joint.Perhaps they're just getting back in the groove, but the idea that a simple lunch for three can to almost $150 with tip is just outrageous.Spend your dining money well - elsewhere.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing decorations, great manager Tony.
Super nice guy. Great food! A must visit in nyc !
Be the first to ReplyI am not sure why I am giving it three stars.
Maybe out of being courteous. We ordered in for delivery because of Covid . I remember the Peking duck was outstanding so I ordered it . It was just fair and not what I remembered it to be . I also ordered the wanton soup which was less than fair. The wontons were doughy and the soup had no taste . The bill was quite expensive and this is probably the last time I will order there again
Be the first to ReplyThis once wonderful place has fallen on hard times.
The food, despite the tiny portions at big prices, will be hard on your stomach as well. My lunch repeated for hours after I left the restaurant where the heaters were not working and the chairs were chipped and creaky. For my money, I will go to The New Cottage, an excellent Szechuan restaurant in the site of Caritas at 78th and Broadway. There I will eat 125% better food at half the price.
Be the first to ReplyWent here for dinner recently.
It's an upscale Chinese food restaurant on the Upper West Side. It is very spacious and nicely decorated. There are many servers and they are all very attentive. The clientele is a lot of older people and families. We started off with soup dumplings and fried shrimp balls which were both delicious. We also got Chinese broccoli, crispy beef, General Tso's chicken, honey walnut shrimp, fried rice and they brought another vegetable dish out to us. Everything was really good. Portions were a good size. Good for sharing. Definitely the type of place to go to on a special occasion with a group. Check it out.
