Good Food
We stopped here for lunch while shopping in Chinatown. Ordered a chicken dish and spicy shrimp and pork dumplings. Very good food , only $30, however the restaurant could use a good scrubbing.
Be the first to ReplyDon't miss the Fried Duck
I just passed Shanghai Heping Restaurant when I was following the Lion Dancers through Chinatown during Chinese New Year and I am glad I did. The food and service were excellent.
This side of Chinatown was not as busy after the Lion dances, but the restaurant had a consistent crowd that evening. I had seen the picture for the Fried Duck and I had to have that for dinner. It tasted almost like a Peking Duck that had been lightly breaded and fried.
The duck had been soaked in a marinade and was boneless, then breaded and lightly fried. It was delicious, moist and flavorful. It had a nice crunch to it and even though it was pricey ($23.00) the portion size was more than generous.
I ordered a Shanghai Fried rice which had everything in it, meats, vegetables and shrimp and it was flavorful and almost a meal onto itself. I ended up taking what I could not finish home.
The service could not have been nicer or more welcoming. It is not the fanciest place but the food and the service more than make up for it on this somewhat gloomy stretch of Mott Street.
You have to stop there for lunch or dinner for not always traditional Chinese food.
Inexpensive, Find Atmosphere, Good Food
Pretty much Shanghai type dishes tho there may be other non-Shanghai selections. Must say, it's quite inexpensive, relative to the similar one just next door. Heping wins hands down. The dishes are well-made, delicious, well-priced. Spacious also. What more can a diner need in terms of a leisurely good inexpensive meal?

We had some of the best soup dumplings we've had here -- with a filling of pork and crab -- an unusual mix that worked. The pan-fried dumplings we also got were good, but not as great. Service wasn't that friendly, but we were there for the food.
Be the first to ReplyGood Xiao Long Bao
We are looking good Xiao Long Bao restaurants and this is close to the top of the list. The dough was thin and the tastes of the pork and pork/crab dumplings were good.
We will, if given the opportunity, come back and also try other dishes.
RUDANESS
The ladies who work inside are unpleasant and unkind. They don't even say good morning or good evening. This is not how customers are treated, NO.
Be the first to Replylunch on a Friday
We ordered pork fried dumplings, bok choy and tofu skin, general tsao chicken, and a fried rice. Average, which was disappointing for us for Chinatown. I can make better dumplings. fried rice tasted funny and didn't look fried at all. Bok choy and general tsao chicken were okay to good.
Be the first to ReplyBad service but fantastic food
Typical of Chinese restaurants. Do not expect any sort of good service and you will be delighted by one of the best quality of Chinese food out there. The food comes fast and the waitress slams the dish on your table. It’s hilarious. But all dishes tasted amazing, as if you are in Shanghai itself.

The staff was very attentive and nice, the food was great and in large portions. They welcomed us with jasmine tea and had many options, for vegans, as well!
