First time walked out without eating…
As a long time customer of Tosca, we were looking forward to trying San Lorenzo. Made a reservation for 7:00 for a party of 2. Arrived on time, many empty tables, hostess was confused and left us standing for 10 minutes while she chatted with another woman. We were then sent to the bar and seated next to a dirty meat grinder and told our table wasn’t ready. No problem - ordered drinks. The smell of the raw old meat was not so pleasant. (Tip do not sit at the end of the bar next to the meat grinder. The staff places a cloth over it, but it is filled with raw meat which emits an unpleasant odor)
After fifteen minutes, no other customers came in, and our table was ready! We were seated at a small two top. The waiter did not appear for another ten minutes. When he arrived, he asked us for our order. We mention, we had not really looked at the menu as we were chatting, and deciding what we would like, but would like to place an appetizer order. He said “chef prefers the entire order placed at once time”. We responded, “we have not decided what else we would like”. He said okay and walked away. My husband and I sat there, decided our orders, finished our drinks and noticed all of the other tables had bread…..
It had been about twenty minutes at this point, the waiter had not been by again, and our appetizers had not appeared on the table. I had heard that service was a bit slow, but the food was good. The table next to us received their entrees; except not what they ordered. They waiter ignored them when they stated they did not order the pasta dish presented and just sprinkled Parmesan on it. The couple laughed looked at us and said, “I guess we are eating this!”
At this point, we asked the waiter where our appetizer order was, he stated, “chef ONLY takes fully orders, I have not placed the order. Are you ready NOW?”. We have been sitting at the restaurant for over an hour with no food. At no point did he tell us, he was not placing our order.
That was enough for us. We stood us, paid our drink order. The couple next to us, stated, “good for you, the place has great food, but is a disaster.”
We ran into friends walking out. They had a similar experience. Bring your patience!
It is like you are in Italy
Absolutely phenomenal food and experience. The Italian born chef has a true culinary art and his fiancé knows how to make you feel welcomed and creates the perfect ambience. All of the food was top notch and transported our small group right back to Italy. Certainly get the calamari to start and the lobster risotto was some of the best I have ever had. Ended the evening with their chocolate cake and cheese cake, both so tasty. This is one of the best Italian restaurants I have been to stateside. Bravo.

Came here with my girl friend for the New Years Eve pre fixe dinner. All the food was very delicious. The restaurant seating is pretty tight but that can be expected in DC. Overall I would definitely stop by again when in the area.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent Restaurant
Was in town for a convention and literally stumbled across this restaurant on my way back to our Air BB. It was about 3 doors down. The staff was excellent and the food...ohhh the food. I sat at the bar and the bartender was excellent. The drinks were well made and had a great selection. This restaurant will not disappoint.

I had heard of a great/new Italian restaurant on 9th St. NW near the Convention Center and determined that it was this one. I took a friend here for a birthday dinner and it didn't disappoint. It's small and cozy but great ambiance. Ashley was our server and she was great. The Executive Chef used to be affiliated with the Northern Italian Restaurant, Tosca, in DC. I'd definitely visit again!

I really loved our dinner and can't wait to return!. My son and his girlfriend found this place. What a find... Christine, the hostess/manager/fiance was very pleasant and inviting. We selected a variety of pasta plates to share and all were excellent. Thank you for a wonderful night!

My husband and I had attended a show in DC and decided to drive down 9th and find a restaurant before our 2 hour drive home. I clicked on Google and saw that San Lorenzo had great reviews. Because of COVID 19, there was little activity indoors at lunch. We were seated right away. The food was wonderful. We shared a cold peach soup with shrimp ceviche and each had a sandwich that was so generous, we had to bring half of our sandwiches home. We placed our drink orders and the general manager gave us different recommendations that were spot on. The restaurant itself was clean, filled with interesting pictures of the chef's hometown in Tuscany. Our waitress was excellent and engaging. We will definitely return, hopefully for dinner!
Be the first to ReplyA Birthday Well Spent in San Lorenzo
Based on a review in Washingtonian Magazine’s “100 Very Best Restaurants” edition, we decided to dine at San Lorenzo to celebrate my wife’s birthday. It turned out to be a wise choice. Located in DC’s Shaw Neighborhood, its modest size and convivial atmosphere were perfect for the occasion.
We started by sharing plates of Misticanza (mixed green salad) and calamari. Some restaurants treat simple salads like an afterthought; not so the case here. The salad was very fresh and nicely presented, complemented well by the lemon dressing. While the salad was gentle to the palate, the grilled calamari, accompanied by shaved Brussel sprouts and a marvelous red pepper puree, was sparkling with flavor.
My wife had Chitarra (square spaghetti with clams and lobster ragu and a light lobster sauce) for the main course. I chose the Tortelli (crown shaped ravioli filled with robbiolina, black truffle and topped by a porcini mushroom sauce). We both were delighted by the lively/enticing flavors. (We sampled from each other’s plates and liked each other’s entrée equally. The sauces were simply wonderful and, mercifully, did not drown out the flavors of the other ingredients.
Somehow we had room for dessert, and while we were contemplating the many choices, the server brought a square of tiramisu with a lit candle to commemorate the occasion. It was divine.
Service was gracious and suitably attentive without being smothering. Upon departing I expressed how we were feeling about our outing: “Thank you so much for making this occasion extra special.”
While one could definitely celebrate special occasions at San Lorenzo, it has the feel of a welcoming neighborhood place.
Fabulous, cute Italian restaurant.
Fabulous, cute Italian restaurant. Outstanding pasta and sea food at very reasonable prices for DC. We just returned after over a year and enjoyed it immensely, as always.
Be the first to ReplyWonderful in every way.
I was delighted to find this restaurant at the suggestion of a friend. It is like stepping into a neighborhood café in Europe without the flight. Service and food were high quality, very friendly and helpful. I had halibut which was as good as I have ever had. Dessert was delicious and there was a short but very good list of selections. Everyone else enjoyed theirs as much as I did. I loved the décor which added to the overall, small bistro effect. It is a small space which is delightful but loud--just like Europe. It was a bit distracting but we managed without screaming at each other. I will go back asap. I should add that we had one problem which had nothing to do with the restaurant but with my leaving my phone in the taxi. The wait staff were very helpful with solving the problem without causing me or anyone else to panic. Thank you!! To the readers, just get up and go!!.You will be glad you did.
