Horrible, unprofesional, rude, poor, uneducated manager and staff. Service standrard are worst than mcdonalds
First of all The manager on duty ( Thai) who doesnt even know the definition of Managing, poor unprofesional, rude, no passion in hospitality whatsoever. Such a shame. Issue was made me wait and queue up behind 7 other people while my table is ready with the food and my friends were already eating. Manager and the owner says its their seating policy. What a shame and what a stupid policy. Make zero sense to me why would i queue up again when my space is ready with the food waiting for me 😂😂😂. I would not mind if they wanna offer my seat to other guests who are waiting to be seated if they would prefer sitting with my friends. What a bunch of idiots. I would love to educate these kind of horrible people who ruin the whole hospitality industry. We have been there several times and we would not mind the food being a bit over price. This type of service is unacceptable. Their only focus is filling the restaurant with people obviusly nor service.. Would not reccomned this horrible place to any of my friends. I come from a hospitality industry as well.
Be the first to ReplyGreat spot for a lively casual lunch!!
Fun place , really bustly and busy with a good lively music. Service was attentive and smiley. Menu was tight for lunch gets bigger at night time I believe. Food is fresh and tasty and for sure coming back . Price wise all good , not a giveaway but worth the price. Enjoy it
Be the first to ReplyOverrated expensive thai food with poor service
First impressions count and, after a bad first experience, I went back to see if things had changed. Unfortunately it had not.
It was a hot day so I had a bottle of water with me. Before I could even pop it down on the floor with my bag upon being seated, a lady barked that no outside drinks were allowed. I politely pointed out that the bottle was near empty and in any event, enquired where she would like me to place it given the table was the size of a handkerchief and the fact that I was about to place it on the floor? She glared at me then walked off. Nothing like a warm welcome.
We were there for lunch and there are no vegetarian mains, nor a la carte menus. They can remove the meat from the dish but will not replace it with something else, say tofu or any other protein. The food was fine, nothing to write home about and definitely did not live up to the overgenerated-hype. There's much better and more authentic thai food in HK.
Service was hurried. A myriad of staff hover in an effort to speed up your eating and food that remains on your plate will be taken away in haste. We had to tell them on several occasions that a particular dish was not finished (clearly it was no where near) but despite that, staff were desperate to take it away every few minutes.
The ambience and decor are nice - it's a welcome distraction from the poor service and average food.
Great food but huge disparity between lunch and dinner portions…
Having been to Samsen for dinner a few times already and knowing to expect a delectable bomb of authentic Thai flavors… we were shocked at the quality/value of their lunch service.
Expect heaping portions of rice and teeny tiny amounts of protein when you come at lunch, despite paying HK$130-150 on average per dish. Potatoes were also very undercooked and hard in the chicken curry, which we have never observed at dinner. Sadly seems like a carb-heavy cashgrab at lunch since the area is so densely populated with offices.
Would recommend otherwise for dinner…
No air conditioning ! No service
The food is alright but definitely u can find it anywhere easily . Definitely not Michelin type. Overall is good but pricey. Service is below average especially the bald head manager . Absolutely no air conditioning ! Its super hot inside. When I requested the manager to turn on the fan , he only said it's broken and simply walked away. Nice service really.
Be the first to ReplyPrawns with pomelo, ginger & caramelised coconut in betel leaf wraps
Have been to Samsen at Sheung Wan several times and it’s always a good night with great Thai food and a lively atmosphere. This branch is bigger than the original at Wan Chai so it’s much better suited for a group.
We have tried a lot of the menu now and haven’t been disappointed. The charcoal grilled prawn skewers and red curry fish cakes are both good but the highlights are:
* the prawns with pomelo, ginger, peanuts and caramelised coconut in betel leaf wraps
* the chopped duck larb, a garlicky-coriander-Thai basil mix with crunchy pork rinds which you wrap up in lettuce leaf cups to eat.
* the fresh roti, with layers that manage to be both soft and crispy – we enjoy it best when we also order the spiced yellow chicken and potato curry and use the roti to mop up all the wonderful sauce – so good.
Inside, the restaurant is open and casual, with distressed concrete walls, retro posters and pop art and splashes of colour. The large old wooden doors open right up across the shopfront giving it a spacious, airy feel.
There is only 1 negative - you can’t book unless you are in a group of 8+. There is always a line outside and even when we arrived just before the 6:30pm opening time, there was a line of about 20 people already. We had a group booking but there were still a few restrictions, ie they will only seat you once the whole group is there and they’ll only hold the booking for 15 minutes.
It’s open for lunch 12:00-2:30 and dinner, 6:30-11pm.
Most starters are under $100HKD and most mains fall in the range of $138-$188HKD.

Nice atmosphere but less food selection
Nice atmosphere but less food selection. Mostly dishes are fried noodles or rice, if you eat this, you can select salad or dessert only.
Be the first to ReplyGreat place! Lively atmosphere
Great place! Lively atmosphere with a good balance between casual and douchey. Only place in hk to get Khao Soi soup and it doesn’t disappoint. Cocktails and slushes both very good. Everyone will enjoy this place, from the gong lui to the gwei lo to the see lai making it the ideal first date restaurant to distract your victim from your awful personality.
Also beef skewers were good.
