Sala of Tokyo Zürich Reviews from The Last Year
Disappointing
Two stars for the service and the good wine. But these are the only positive elements of our visit today. We ordered - Sushi maki: bad quality seaweed and average rice. That was a bad start. - Crab tempura: more greasy tempura than crab. Not very good. - Beef Teriyaki: 150g of below average beef with a tiny quantity of sauce (CHF 52) And to eat, cheap chop stick. Total bill: over CHF 320 for an average meal with one bottle of wine. May-be the place used to be great. But it is certainly not the case any more. To be avoided!
Best Japanese Restaurant in Town
My wife and I have been eating here for over 23 years. We know Japanese cuisine well and the Sala of Tokyo is one of the best Japanese restaurants in Switzerland. The ambience and the food are perfect; the service is always friendly and personable. If you like high-quality Japanese food, this is the place for you.
I loved
Excellent restaurant with traditional Japanese food in the center of Zurich. Great service and delicious food. We intend to return more often. The decor is beautiful! I felt like I was in Japan!
Best of the best
Expensive, extraordinary! Wagyu beef is the best I’ve ever had, but we had some of everything. Sushi rolls, tempura, grilled shitaki, were all outstanding. The service was 4.5 stars.
Magnificent
My absolute favorite place for Japanese food in Zurich. As always, we had the large menu with sake accompaniment. The quality of the food is simply fantastic, the service is unique. It's always a pleasure to eat with Lorenz Muster and his team!
Disappointing visit
Very disappointing visit. We went to celebrate my husband’s birthday, the reservation had this remark. We ordered tempura and as main the Sukiyaki hot pot soup for 2, described as served with meat, vegetables, mushrooms, tofu and glass noodles. Weber had this dish many times before d we were always happy. Only this time the soup came only with pot Choi , 2 small pieces of carrots and 2 pieces of mushrooms.. We asked the waitress and her response was incredible: 1. the vegetables included depend on what they deliver to the restaurant. 2 the soup is never the same , it always changes. 3. She actually didn’t know why only came with pot Choi . And since she believed it is not their fault then she didn’t think it would be worth bringing that message to the kitchen. She didn’t come back again to our table and we had a very healthy dinner with a hot pot Choi soup … We paid CHF 330 for our dinner and my husband’s birthday wasn’t even mentioned by the staff. Our waitress was really arrogant and the young waitresses looked almost afraid to even look at you… all in all not a very nice experience, somehow it felt that they lost the pleasure to do their job , very little effort needs to be made as during our stay all tables were busy !! We won’t come back anytime soon. A real pity!!
Chopsticks
Shabu Shabu was delicious. Unfortunately, you have to eat it with sharp, very bad disposable chopsticks. Every cheap restaurant in Japan has better chopsticks than here. A single grain of rice is practically impossible to pick up. And an empty rice bowl is the least decency you can show
Excellent as usual
We go there about 1-2 times/year and it is and remains one of the best Japanese restaurants in town. It is so authentic that sometimes you wish they had pictures or mock-ups of their dishes, as in Japan. Last night we had among other things their nasu dengaku (aubergine with miso sauce). It was absolutely delicious but a picture might have warned us: *very* challenging to eat with chopsticks as it comes in two big halves, so either try cutting pieces with chopsticks or else eat 'the Japanese way', sort of slurping up pieces between your bowl and your mouth ... not very fitting at a western table. The robata-grilled lobster tails are also great though they come 'al dente'; we just asked that they grill them a bit longer, which was then perfect. The nigiri uni gunkan is also a wonder otherwise very hard to get in Zurich. And so were the sea-bream carpaccio, grilled shiitake, the crab in vinegar dip.
Perfect!
It doesn't get any better than this! High-quality products prepared to perfection! Attentive service and an explosion of flavors never experienced before in Japanese cuisine!
Was it always this bad and expensive? I hope not
I was simply baffled by just how bad the food here was. Between the reviews and Michelin guide sign on the door, I had high expectations for what I would eat here. If you had cut the prices by a factor of 4, I would have called it mediocre convenience store food, as it stands with the current price it was an abomination. The sushi was tasted old and was literally on dry somehow overly salted rice. The age dash I tofu cubes were huge and flavorless in a viscous sauce that reminded me of Panda Express without seasoning. Just about the only dish that was redeeming that we had was the salmon tar tar with an onsen egg, which at least made som le attempt at seasoning. I honestly don’t know what happened to this place; maybe it used to be good, explaining the reviews or Michelin guide listing. As of now, it spurred me to write a review for the first time in a long time, as potentially the worst meal I’ve ever eaten that cost over 100 per person.
