🤮 1/5 - A disgrace, disappointment and embarrassment to it's former namesake!

I was very embarrassed on my evening at this once former, wonderful establishment. I had booked a table of four to treat our American friends for a visit to the oldest restaurant in England that specialised in game when I last visited some 20 years ago. We had arrived early and were told that we could go upstairs to the bar for pre-dinner drink with our friends. No sooner had our friends arrived, 10 minutes early, we then then told that we HAD to go to our table and our friends were not permitted to order a drink at the bar! I was disappointed to see that the table arrangements had been drastically changed; no longer the intimate, compartmentalised tables but as many tables as possible rammed together to get the maximum number of patrons in as possible. The intimacy had gone and one could clearly hear the conversation on the next table which for a supposedly first class restaurant charging exorbitant prices, is unforgivable. The menu was equally disappointing. The menu no longer featured the once renowned game menu; gone was the jugged hare, goose, grouse, pheasant, turkey, salmon and trout to be replaced with insipid steak and kidney pie or pudding which incidentally, did NOT contain steak, but stringy brisket, which at £22.95 before adding vegetables, is a trice steep. Moreover, their so-called “chicken, leak and mushroom pie” was NOT A PIE AT ALL; it was chicken, leak and mushroom pie casserole served in a porcelain dish covered with a layer of commercially available, pre-made flaky pastry! I’ve had better in Wetherspoons for much less than the £22.95 that I was charged, again before adding vegetables. I also think £5.50 for half a mashed potato is a bit steep. All these issues, coupled with the waiters constantly looking at us to clear our table in a rush to get us out, was most unsettling and quite frankly, downright rude. We did not have a bottle of wine but 4 glasses of the house wines and a couple of cocktails and the bill came to an eye-watering £357.77! Suffice to say that Rules will not have to endure my patronage in the future and I warn potential patrons to avoid this establishment if they are expectant of the previously superb food and service of Rules; it has sadly disappeared.
