Ruffian
I don't know too much about wine, but lord do the staff at Ruffian! As others have mentioned, they specialize in wine from Eastern Europe. Came here with a friend before going to grab dinner. Happy hour was bottles only, so we split a bottle of wine and got the pita bread just to prep our stomachs. I hadn't eaten all day as I am trying to be rockstar skinny. We sat in the cute little outside area, and the decor was beautiful. Magical even. Absolutely stellar ambiance. I asked one question about the wine, and our waiter gave me more info than I possibly could have ever imagine. He was LOCKED in. I retained very little but that is 100% a me problem. As others have mentioned, just not a lot of bang for your buck. The dollar doesn't go very far here, but it is New York City. IG @jnov_ Tiktok @jnov__
Be the first to ReplyMiniature Food, Maximum Price
Menu comprised of about 12 items with catchy names like "Golden Girls," April Sjhowers, "Khachapuri" with no differentiation between appetizers and entrees. Small even for appetizers, priced mostly mid $20's to mid $30's with the least expensive being two very small pitas with olive oil $9, and $5 more for two more pitas. Granted, adventuresome menu and flavors, but what arrives is just plain skimpy. Last night the service was spotty having to wait 10 minutes before anyone came by who could be asked for the check. And about as long again to get checked out. Food can be a one time charm, but neither the value nor the service.
Be the first to ReplyGreat place for light bites and organic wines
This East Village wine bar and eatery offers a great tasting menu - which is what I recommend. At $35 per person, itโs an excellent deal. You can order wine by the glass or get the wine pairing option. Outdoor set up is really nice.
Be the first to ReplyDelicious holiday take out
Their Christmas for two is LEGIT. It literally saved my family during covid because my husband was sick and I have a newborn. The meal is vegetarian which is so hard to find bc all nyc holiday meals are heavy on meat/unhealthy. However, the meal did not skimp on flavor and reheated so so well. I will keep ordering from this place if they continue to serve vegetarian meal kits for two!
Be the first to ReplyExcellent food and wine- but outside dining needs thought
The food and wine were equally good here.
Bowls are small enough to allow you to taste a few plates without getting too full and approx $15 a plate. Strong Asian influence, but moreish and satisfying.
The wines were diverse and we enjoyed traveling across the world tasting Hungarian, American, Greek and others at about $15 a glass plus.
The outside space needs some attention and it let down the experience. Two heaters were not enough for the number of tables, and the chairs were cheap fold up IKEA and not comfortable. The red wine was served at cellar temperature and with cold outside dining they didnโt warm up. Staff need to fix this. Also, the staff barely talked about the wine. A missed opportunity to engage with customers-and Iโm sure they have this expertise.
Excellent service in a cozy spot
This time the wines by the glass were not as exceptional as had been in the past, but we had a great time and felt welcomed and respected from start to finish which is not very common in this town.

We stopped in for a glass of wine before dinner across the street. It's a tight space which is part of its charm. Good wine selection and the staff was attentive and efficient.

This is probably the best wine bar I've ever had the pleasure of visiting. The bartenders and cooks work as a team and are all genuinely attempting to make the most of your time there. We were surprised to find some really rare options on the by the glass menu and were also pleasantly surprised by how tasty the food was.
Be the first to ReplyPerfect for Sunday evening friends night out
We werenโt that hungry. We werenโt that thirsty. But everything in this narrow wine bar activates the senses and the appetites. The wine selection was superlative - and sampling their orange wines was delightful. The food is cooked at the bar, and whether youโre hungry or not, you simply had to try it all. The prosciutto and fried anchovies was delicious but the beef rendang flatbread was simply the best youโll have outside of Indonesia. Go on a Sunday evening since the place is quieter and you can have a fantastic time with friends.

What an amazing experience! If youโre looking for mind blowing experience and fine dining choose Ruffian!!
Chefs table quality indeed. Balanced palette, great wine to match and atmosphere of its own level.
If I was jus walking past I wouldโve come in as it doesnโt seem like a typical kind of a restaurant, because itโs not typical at all. Donโt let the first impression to stop you. Take your time and wait for that seat, because is well worth it!!
Speechless
Well, I guess not speechless since I have a lot of good things to say about this little gem! I saw an article recently where this was named one of Travel and Leisure's "Top 25 Wine Bars In The Nation". I'd never heard of Ruffian, so I was keen to check it out. Warning: it is VERY small. I arrived around 6:15 on a Saturday and found there was only one seat. However the staff is extremely friendly and keep an eye out for you when additional spots open up.
They have an extensive wine list that includes wine from many countries that are not necessarily known for their wines. Our waiter was great and helped us navigate the list to select a wine from Hungary (Bull's Blood). It was great and really broadened our horizons. Our waiter also helped us pick out some nibbles. He said the menu changes frequently, but we enjoyed the cheese plate, lentil salad and chickpea dish. To me, nothing jumped off the menu, but once I tried everything, I can truly say it was some of the most delicious food I've had recently. High marks for Ruffian!
